Befitting a Begum!
Shararas have suddenly caught the fancy of designers and fashion divas alike. Designers attribute the popularity to its comfort factor and the fact that it is a dress replete with the Mughal grandeur

Back in the day during film promotions for Ranjhanaa, Sonam Kapoor dressed in a Shehla Khan sharara, not just turned heads but set the stage for the silhouette. Before the fashion fraternity could nod together on the next big silhouette, shararas were in and how.

The wedding wear came all inspired from the couture weeks and the much wearable cotton versions trickled into everyday fashion.

In designers' den

Rina Dhaka explored the easy breezy silhouette at India Bridal Fashion Week 2013 and so did Anand Kabra at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring Summer 2013

Last checked, it was none other than Manish Malhotra, paying ode to the garment in his collection Reflections at Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 2013. The designer's interpretation of the garment was a fusion of sharara and classic pant—a gharara pant. Hitherto explored as an outfit idea for the bride's sister, shararas steadily displaced lehengas and lately palazzos.

Opines Delhi-based designer Reynu Tandon, "It's popularity lies in the fact that it is comfortable, one can move around and dance around.” She attributes the success of the Mughal-inspired dress to the way it falls. "Any garment that has its roots in tradition will always carry on, although it might evolve. This too has its roots in Mughal look, so it will always stay in fashion circles.”

Traditional take

Traditionally described as a pair of loose pleated trousers and typically worn with a kameez and dupatta, the garment lately has undergone not just evolution but experimentation. Designer Paromita Banerjee simply attributes its popularity down to cut and fall of the fabric. "The beauty of this garment lies in the waistline. The fact that it fits at the waist and flares out from below the hips. This silhouette fits any type of body structure." Having played around with tie-and-die and ombre along with the use of hand woven fabrics, in her former collection, she adds, "Its popularity also lies in the fact that it fits all kinds of body structures and since women of all ages are willing to experiment, all the more reason for their popularity."

Sweeping scenario

Back to last year and everyfashion week presented the sharara. Sabyasachi at Delhi Couture Week brought forth the festive side of the garment. As did designer duo Meera Muzaffar Ali at India Bridal Fashion Week 2013, apart from others.

Shares Rimple Singh, Chandigarh- based designer from the label, Plush Red, "Shararas are a much favoured option among brides rather than the lehenga. They have the grandeur and fall of a lehenga but the comfort and ease of pants.” She adds, "They can be teamed up not just with a long jacket but also a blouse and an odhni."

The over exploited fashion often become a victim of ill-fitted tailoring. While it may be tied and tried in several ways, it needs to adhere to certain criteria. Warns Reynu Tandon, "When it comes to shararas, you can not force a size 34 on somebody who's a size 36. If altered even by an inch, the entire feel good factor and flow get affected."

As long as the cut and tailoring are meticulously taken care of, the designers and the wearers vouch for the ease and versatility of the silhouette.

The fashion vocabulary

Culotte: A culotte is a divided skirt. The one where the divide starts at the waist itself. Picture a pair of palazzo pants with the flare that keeps increasing as you go down.

Gharara: Even though slightly, varied versions exist on the two garments. But traditionally a gharara is fitted somewhere till above the knee (with something like a band) and then flares out.

Sharara: While a sharara is the bifurcated version that falls straight and looks like a skirt. It is not uncommon to often use the two interchangeably.

While traditionally always paired with a kameez, a sharara, these days can be happily teamed up with a knee-length long jacket.

Nothing to hate!
The steamy scenes in Hate Story 2 may be making the headlines, but for actor Jay Bhanushali it is just part of his work and he is quite happy with the results
Ashima S Batish

It's a question he is asked wherever he goes these days—How did your wife react to your steamy scenes with Surveen Chawla in the film Hate Story 2? Not that Jay Bhanushali minds answering the question time and again but he feels that it should be directly put to Mahhi Vij. It's another matter that he knows her answer, "She would say that I am a thorough professional and what I am doing on-screen is acting, which is an actor's job."

The song Aaj Phir has got close to five million hits on Youtube, its video has already gone viral. But that is where it all ends. "You would be disappointed if you think that the entire film is as sensational. It's only limited to a song and the rest of the film is propelled by a strong storyline," says Jay, who feels there couldn't have been a better launch pad for him than Hate Story 2, which releases on July 18 in Bollywood.

Jay has been in the television industry for a while now and graduating to films is a natural progression for him. "Which actor doesn't want to see himself on big screen? As for me, my track record of being a hard working actor has paid off." It was while anchoring Dance India Dance that the director of the film spotted him. The show, in fact, proved to be so lucky that during its shooting, he was offered another film, Desi Katta.

"And I lapped it up. It's an interesting story of a boy who starts making Indian pistols when he is five-year-old and goes on to become an Olympic medalist. It's a different type of film, yet very entertaining."

Having worked in both mediums that is television and cinema, he says "An episode of a show stays with the people for a day, so even if you give a bad shot, you are rescued by the next day's episode. But films are forever; one wrong scene will tag you as a good or bad actor. And films can always be revisited." The two films he is a part of are very different from each other, which he says eventually helped him explore the actor in him.

But it is the actress of the film, Surveen Chawla, who has grabbed all the limelight for now with her bold scenes in the film. Jay, however, is optimistic that the film will prove to be just as good for his career as well. "The competition in the TV industry is immense, you have new shows, new actors entering the zone every week. If I have managed to make a mark for myself there, I am sure I will be able to sustain myself in Bollywood as well." He quotes the example of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, an actor he looks up to, who established himself, despite the fact that he kick-started his career with non-descript roles. "I wouldn't mind if I fail to attain the star status in the industry but I want to be known as an actor, who knows his job best, acting." And the love-making scenes of the song, Aaj Phir, he repeats is, "strictly work."

De-tan your skin with these useful tips
Manpriya Singh

By now, those who are prone to tanning are sufficiently tanned! At least enough to have the tan strips showing on their shoulders or elsewhere on the body. Since the coming monsoon is not going to do any good to the skin either, it's time to remove the flipside of sunlight before moisture and breakouts take their turn and run havoc. Fortunately, the tips to remove tan are more successful than the tips to prevent tan!

While there's no dearth of homemade tips to get rid of tan, there are also facials with the fancy terminology that promise to put your skin colour back into April.

Shares Madhurima, a beauty consultant with a city-based salon, "Any good anti-tan facial should take care of fifty per cent of the problem. These days, almost every salon has an elementary or advanced version of anti-tan facials. A simple basic anti-tan facial should consist of a de-tan gel, a de-tan scrub and a de-tan face pack. Follow up the treatment and maintain your skin thereafter with regular home remedies."

Skin tone

Then there are beauty commandments that need to be adhered to, irrespective of the weather. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate…does that emphasise enough or it needs to be spelt three more times? Exfoliation does not only take care of dead skin cells but if done with natural ingredients, it also removes the tan effectively.

If the tan is not permanent, cover up your legs, arms and feet for a few days. That should take care of as much as fifty per cent of the tan. Favour summer ballerinas in place of flip flops, ditch the sleeveless in favour of full-length cotton shirt for a few days and see the difference.

While sunscreens are generally good in protecting ageing, wrinkles and freckles, the ones with zinc oxide also help in preventing the skin from tanning. The second-generation sunscreens with zinc oxide are fairly effective in blocking a broad spectrum of rays, although an ideal sunscreen would be a blend of physical and chemical properties.

Be natural

There is neither denying nor underestimating the power of the kitchen in getting rid of the seasonal tan. Shares Betty Nangia, beauty and diet consultant, from Bettys Holistic and Skin Care, "An all-natural face pack used twice a week not only ensures effective removal of tan but lends an inner glow to the skin. Make a pulp of tomato, lemon peel; add grains of yellow pulse powder ¼ tsp, ¼ tsp fullers earth, a pinch of tej patta, ¼ tsp jawar powder. Make a paste and apply for fifteen minutes, twice a week and see the difference."

Doc Talk
Motherhood calling
Dr Preeti Jindal

Pregnancy is time to rejoice and pamper oneself. Apart from that, there is another good thing - one can eat to one's heart's content without having to worry about those few inches gained with every bite. However, there are few myths one needs to break regarding what all can be 'safely' eaten during pregnancy

Papaya and Pineapple: There is a deep-rooted myth that these can lead to a miscarriage. However, there is no scientific basis to it and all the reliable studies have refuted it.

Hot or cold food: Again, a pregnant woman is not ill. She can eat anything at any temperature provided it is hygienic and palatable.

Ghee and oil: It is another myth that eating too much oil makes the delivery easier. Fat only raises cholesterol levels.

Eat for two: No way. In pregnancy one needs only 200-300 extra calories and eating for two will make you unnecessarily fat.

Salt intake will cause swelling: Salt is an essential nutrient but should not be taken in excess.

Tea and coffee: At least 1-2 cups of each are allowed and can be safely taken.

Spicy food induces labour:

Not true. This can only cause heart-burn.

Dates are harmful: On the contrary, dates are rich in iron and beneficial for health.

Beetle leaf (paan) is bad: Paan without intoxicating substances is good as it is rich in iron.

TRENDSETTER
Wear your attitude

Fashion, they say, keeps changing but style is eternal and sometimes, quite personal. In conversation with Navdeep Kaur, 24, an assistant accounts manager in a private firm, we stand acquainted with yet another definition of style as she says that it is something you are born with. "You cannot imitate another person's sense of style, define your personality," she says, "I am a trendsetter, not a follower,"

Describe your sense of style…

I wear anything that I feel comfortable and confident in. I try to experiment with fashion because I believe in setting the trend and not following any. I admire many people and their sense of style, but instead of blindly aping their style, I learn from them and draw influences from them, which I apply to my personal style.

Latest addition to your wardrobe…

I just purchased a watch from Guess!

Brand freak or street smart?

I am a blend of both because I like experimenting.

Choose one: Sporty, glamorous or chic

I like to be sharp and elegant, so it's chic for sure.

My style icon…

I like the way Sonam Kapoor dresses up. She is quite a fashionista and she looks good in whatever she wears.

Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity around?

I'd crown Vidya Balan with that title. She has an effortless bad sense of style, especially when it comes to Western wear. She reminds me of those good old aunties from the 80s, trying too hard and getting it wrong while attempting to blend the retro with contemporary.

One fashion trend you don't understand…

I think every trend has its own uniqueness. One should just know how to carry it.

Your take on accessories…

I think accessories are a must. You can glam up a simple dress by accessorising it right. However, I try not to wear all accessories in one go. I keep in mind the occasion and dress accordingly. Overdoing accessories can make one look like a Christmas tree.

One thing that boosts your confidence…

Clothes and footwear because it makes me feel very comfortable, thereby boosting up my confidence.

I would love to be dressed up by….

There is a lot of potential in the city and I am very fond of Sidhu ji, a city-based designer. She is fabulous and her sense of style is outstanding.

One fragrance that you can swear by…

Miss Dior!

(As told to Amarjot Kaur)

A rare jewel
Rearing a camel as a pet is rarely heard of. In the case of Glenn Peat, it’s a reality
Poonam Bindra

“Keeping and rearing a different kind of animal as a pet is an adventure by itself and one has much to learn,” says Glenn Peat, manager, Hyatt Regency, Ludhiana, who is now enjoying the company of a camel! Glenn already has four horses as his pets and now has added a camel named ‘Mani’, meaning a jewel, to his tribe.

Always been fascinated by this “guy with a hump” (as he calls it), Glenn bought it from Amarpura village on the Pakistan border in Rajasthan. “The life of a camel and human beings is in the ratio of 1:6, so our fellow who is four years old is technically a young man,” he quips. As compared to the horses, camels are more demure and get aggressive only sometimes during the mating season.

Glenn who likes to ride ‘Mani’ four to five times a week has housed him at the Punjab Equine Sports Academy, along with the horses. They got a trainer along from Bikaner for some time and now Mani understands all the simple commands like sit, stand, run and stop. As a New Zealander, Glenn has grown up among all types of animals, right from guinea pigs, goats, hens to horses but he has never been that close to a camel. Also, he shares, that a camel is easier to maintain and affordable to buy and is not that temperamental. “The only difference is that when Mani gets aggressive he can kick from all sides with his four legs. One has to be very careful for one does not know where the kick is coming from,” says Glenn.

Fed with a mixture of ripe seeds of Ghohar phalli, kikar and Alum, this ‘ship of the dessert’ has settled quite comfortably in Ludhiana. His kids, Jennie and Ashley, too are very comfortable with ‘Mani’ and really looking forward to their rides with him. Grooming is not much of a problem for camels as they only have to be rubbed dry and not given a bath.

STAR TRACK
Creating horror

After Haunted and Raaz 3, Vikram Bhatt wears the director's cap for another 3D film titled Creature 3D. It will scare the audience with a creature created using VFX which will be a first of its kind in India.

The sci-fi thriller film starring Bipasha Basu will mark the debut of Imran Abbas and is slated to release on September 12.

On the latest development, T-series head honcho Bhushan Kumar says, "Vikram is working on the post-production of the film since there is a lot of VFX work to be done. He has shot it on par with international standards and this will be a treat for the Indian audiences. We have chalked our promotional plans and have taken a mutual decision with our distributors to postpone the release of the film. Now, the film hits screens on September 12."

Sippy to direct Hema after 39 years

Legendary director Ramesh Sippy will be directing once again, a film called Shimla Mirchi starring Hema Malini and Rajkummar Rao. The actress opposite Rajkummar Rao is yet to be finalised. The film goes on floors in August and is a sweet, romantic story with its quirky twists.

Sippy's cult classic Sholay was released 39 years back in 1975, when he created the character of Basanti with his favourite actress Hema Malini. Sippy is going to work with Hema after Sholay in Shimla Mirchi and like his other films, the first letter of his next film is also with the letter 'S'.

Sippy always chose to make diverse films right through his career in spite of he being a blockbuster director, to begin with mature love story like Andaz, to comedy Seeta Aur Geeta, to an action adventure Sholay, to slick action Shaan to family drama with Shakti to romantic love story Saagar. Rajkummar Rao opted out of the film to be made on Chetan Bhagat's Revolution 2020 for Ramesh Sippy's upcoming Shimla Mirchi.

22 years of King Khan

Shah Rukh Khan, who made his debut with 1992 film Deewana, completed 22 years in Bollywood on June 25. His fans took to Twitter to trend #22GoldenYearsOfSRK. Meanwhile, the 48-year-old actor underwent an eye surgery to rectify his vision.

Joking about it, he tweeted: 'This is a joke...so some of u don't react to as an anti alcohol group." Now that I don't need glasses I will drink straight from the bottle".' And we must say... cheers.

Wedding bells

Pulkit Samrat will tie the knot with his fiancée Shweta Rohira in a destination wedding in Goa in November this year. She is Salman Khan's rakhi sister.

Work is party

Varun Dhawan hosted a bachelor night party at a popular city nightclub in Mumbai on Friday night as a part of promotional activities for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.

Close to reality

For his magnum opus Bombay Velvet, Anurag Kashyap has sourced a lot of props from around the world to ensure they fit well in the milieu he has tried to create.

A source from the sets said, "Ranbir and Anushka are playing with real guns in the film. The guns have been imported from Germany. The bullets have been shipped from Turkey and they are all part of close-up shots that feature the actors. Add to this, there are blood capsules from UK for scenes showing bloodshed. Ranbir and Anushka's costume accessories have been picked up from Europe.

Back to potboiler

Actor Emraan Hashmi talks about his international film, his son Ayan and more.

Raja Natwarlal

I am thinking about the character of a conman that I have to slip into soon. Just like an actor aspires to be Dilip Kumar or Amitabh Bachchan, it is a conman's dream to become Natwarlal. That's why I insisted on changing the title from Shatir to Raja Natwarlal. The film is a complete potboiler.

Bollywood potboiler

I am consciously attempting to return to Bollywood potboilers. Both Ghanchakkar and Ek Thi Daayan were experimental films that didn't work. In our industry, if a film is accepted, it is a huge hit otherwise it's a damp squib.

White Lies

Danis Tanovic will return to India in July to complete and work on certain portions of the film. We are hoping to premiere it at the Venice Film Festival in November.

Ayan's recovery

It was difficult for me to shoot when Ayan was still being treated for cancer. But he is well on the road to recovery now. He is healthy and happy now and back home. I held on to the belief that everything would be alright so I am grateful for his recovery.

Award ceremonies

I don't look at award ceremonies to validate myself as an actor. I used to dance at shows but then I evolved. I care about the box office performance of a film to validate me as an actor.

CHATTER BOX
Making a move

Purab Kohli was recently evicted from Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa and he is disappointed about his exit. He talks to us about who is the best bet on the show and what he misses most about the dance reality show.

Were you shocked at your exit?

Yes, I was. I was not expecting to be out so soon. I had hoped to continue a bit further as the response I got for the first two performances was encouraging.

What was the fun part about being on the show?

It was the dancing. I really enjoyed myself as I had never done most of the styles; it was a good learning experience.

Who do you think is the best bet on the show?

Mouni Roy, who hasn't showed her best yet! Even Ashish Sharma is quite talented.

What will you miss about the show?

Dancing! I was having a lot of fun on the show. It was a different zone for me to be in.

What else are you doing?

I have two movies coming up. I will be working on them now.

Living a dream

Actors always are on the lookout for fresh concepts and content-driven shows, which enhance their acting capabilities. Vinita Joshi, who gained recognition after Navya and Saraswatichandra on Star Plus, seems to be living her dream as she presents her acting abilities in a unique show titled Bhatak Lena Bawre.

Vinita said, "In Bawre, I essay the female protagonist Yamini, who is a singer, and I am super-excited. Playing a singer is a very different experience, as the way they communicate is very different. I personally watch a lot of videos to see how singers perform, as it would help me get into the skin of the character."

Vinita claimed that she was more impressed with the show as it was not the regular saas-bahu drama. "Bawre is very different, unlike a saas-bahu saga. Sudhir Sharma and Neelesh Misra are fantastic producers. The situations faced and the drama between the characters is something I feel every girl or woman will be able to relate to in some way or the other," she added.

Talking about the bonding she shares with her co-actors, she quipped, "We have a blast on the sets. There are times when the stress levels are high and we have to shoot for 12 hours. We constantly keep the atmosphere light and jovial with light jokes."

— TNS

Shake a leg

While we have many celebrity dance shows, including Colors' Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, now Star Plus too is planning to launch a show soon. Buzz is that SOL productions will produce the show that will be shot in South Africa with names like Ritvick Dhanjani and Sayantani Ghosh already on board.

Double trouble

Get ready to see two Iqbal Khans in Shashi-Sumeet Productions's popular show Tumhari Paakhi on Life OK. After the good response to the show and the current Singapore track, the makers are working on bringing a look-alike of Anshuman (Khan) on the show. The other guy will be Anshuman's brother, who would be a ruffian.

Entry point

Debina Bonnerjee and RJ Mallishka have been approached for the wild-card entry in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. The makers are talking to some other celebrities too, but for now these women seem to be the best bet.

Getting hooked

Along with his new show Ekta Kapoor's Meri Aashiqui Tum Se Hi, which is on air, Shakti Aroraa is in the news for personal reasons as well. Apparently, he got engaged to his girlfriend Neha Saxena recently. The ceremony was low profile with just family and friends present on the occasion.

Foreign shores beckon

Rumours are that Sana Khan of Bigg Boss fame has been approached for a Hollywood project. Post her role in Jai Ho, Sana is excited about this role but keeping mum on it. She is working on getting the part and has had meeting with the makers.

Legal eagle

Nandish Sandhu, who returned to TV with S Farhan's Beintehaa, is excited about his role as a lawyer. His entry will soon bring about a love triangle between Aaliya (Preetika Rao) and Zain (Harshad Arora). He will be seen post his stint in Encounter recently.
