Dribble on screen
You can count at least a dozen football films in Hollywood against Bollywood’s few odd projects. Is it time to add more to the list?
Jasmine Singh

The assumed underdogs in white jerseys, team Costa Rica took Uruguay by surprise when Joel Campbell scored the first goal in the second half of the match. We got up from our chairs, as Oscar Duarte and Marco Urena later sent the ball whizzing in the net in a thrilling match at the FIFA World cup 2014 in Brazil. The big event has just started and we are already witnessing some not-so-expected moments, some adrenaline pumping action, some drama… everything probably making us take a look at the football shown on the reel.

Films based on sports, especially on football and rugby have lured many a directors in Hollywood. The story isn’t the same in Bollywood, where we have films based on sports but mostly dedicated to cricket. The only one that was about striking a goal was John Abraham and Arshad Warsi starrer Goal, (It’s a different thing that it missed the Box Office nets). And only recently we have stars racing on-screen with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag or Paan Singh Tomar. But there are undeniably many directors running after the football, and we might hear someone shouting ‘Goal’ in Bollywood soon. However as of now, we ask people, as they get ready to watch another exciting FIFA match to list their favourite football based movies, and you bet they list plenty.

Hip hip hurray

The all-time favourite Escape to Victory (1981), directed by John Huston holds the top slot. The ones who like it have just one common reason- Pele. Says actor Sonu Sood, a die-hard football fan, “It is a cult soccer film, it has the most amazing star cast of Pele, Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone. The film’s actually inspired by a the true story of Dynamo Kiev’s players, who were captured by the Germans during the war. Now, when I am so addicted to FIFA matches these days, I like pulling out this film from my collection and watching it again.”

And you haven’t seen the speech that Al Pacino, a football coach gives in the Hollywood film Any Given Sunday! “How you can win or lose, I still remember every single dialogue of Al Pacino,” shares actor Anuj Sachdev, who starred in a recent release Hawa Hawai, a film based on skating. An actor who, “Just can’t afford to miss a single match,” however would want some directors making a biopic or commercial films on football. “I love cricket, and we already have many films on this sport. I think now we should focus on other games as well and football being such a popular sport, would make for a wise pick.”

With a desi touch

The FIFA fever has caught up already. Back home if you are struggling to keep awake to watch your favourite teams fight it out, well, then draw some inspiration from ‘Jazz,’ the girl who fought with her parents and everybody else to pursue her dream of playing football in Bend It Like Beckham. As for Ritu Kochhar, corporate head, INIFD-8, “This is by far the best film on football that I have seen apart from of course Any Given Sunday, Green Street Hooligans and The Damned United.” Ritu is also of the same opinion that we don’t have many Hindi films based on sports other than cricket. “Only recently did we see films which took up other sports as subjects. I feel apart from Goal, we should have more such films on football as well. Is someone approaching Baichung Bhutia,” she smiles.

For those of you who haven’t got the latest update, actor John Abraham and director Shoojit Sircar are making a film on football. Written by Gulaab Gang director Soumik Sen, Shoojit's next with John is based on famous football club Mohun Bagan's victory against East Yorkshire Regiment back in 1911. Says Shoojit Sircar, “John and I love football and so when I sent over the script to John, I knew he would love it and he did. We are just prepping for the film now and will start shooting early next year.”

Ringside view
Olympic medallist, boxer Vijender Singh has entered a new arena with Bollywood movie Fugly. The fight is in a different ring and he is keen to win
Jasmine Singh

He has finished his final bout and the verdict is already out. Boxing champion and a surprise actor Vijender Singh is the new poster boy of Bollywood. Well, he has already enjoyed this status in the arena of boxing, and now with the reviews of his debut film Fugly pouring in, Vijender has made a good number of fans outside the ring as well. He is excited, he is nervous and yet he doesn’t let anything show up in his conversation. Vijender has definitely acquired a new style of conversation where he generously uses a lot of English words, but at heart, he says, he is still that small town boy who dreams with open eyes. Here’s getting to know more.

So, how did a boxer land up doing a Hindi film?

I met Akshay Kumar in 2008; we both took an instant liking to each other. Much later he asked me whether I wanted to act. I met director Kabir Sadanand, who told me about my role in the film and I liked it a lot. I still had to go through the whole process of auditioning. And here I am in the film.

Your first shot, do you remember that?

Of course, my first shot was in Leh Ladakh. The day we landed there, we were straightaway taken to the location where the director explained the song sequence that he was going to shoot. I was a bit nervous, but Kabir told me that this song was all about masti and all I had to just be myself. He told where the lights were, where I had to stop and start again. And within minutes, I got it right. In fact, it turned to out to be a fun experience.

Seems you hit on well from the word go, does this mean you had a smooth ride in the film?

Definitely not, I enjoyed acting and dancing but like any other newcomer, I also had difficulty with dialogues. However, my co-actors would come to my rescue. I would practice with them and then say it in front of the camera.

What was the toughest part about acting?

I just can’t do any emotional scenes, especially the ones where I had to cry. I really had a tough time crying. Tears wouldn’t come no matter what. I had to imagine, think of various sad things that could actually made me cry. But once I got comfortable with crying (he laughs), I kept crying and now I can cry at the drop of a hat!

Did your boxing punch come in handy in Fugly?

Surprisingly, it did. I am inherently a sportsman; I am used to living a disciplined life. I would reach the sets on time; I had no problems with waking up early or shooting till late. Anyways, boxing requires a lot of concentration and patience…something that helped my acting as well.

How has the sports fraternity reacted to you on silver screen?

I am flooded with messages on Facebook and Twitter; they have liked what I have done. They see me act, which is something they didn’t know I was capable of. They have seen me walk the ramp many times, but acting was a pleasant surprise for them.

Is it more films for Vijender Singh now?

Why not, if I get good films; fun loving, and romantic…I am totally game for them! Having said this, I want to share that boxing is my first love.

Spiritual cruise
Spirituality meets leisure as some businessmen from Ludhiana gear up for Jagannath Katha on a cruise
Gurvinder Singh

Businessmen from Ludhiana bring in a new concept, katha on a cruise
Businessmen from Ludhiana bring in a new concept, katha on a cruise

Get on to the cruise. Enjoy the waves, the scenic beauty around even as you sing bhajans. Confused? Don’t be as leisure and spirituality have just joined hands. As many as 200 businessmen and professionals are all set to go for Jagannath katha on a cruise!

Says Sanjiv Sood Banka, one of the organiser of the katha on cruise, “People go for trips and just indulge in vices. We enjoy the best of both worlds - the sight of the Lord’s creations and also sing his praises through the katha. So we come back enriched with the knowledge of the place while also feeling the bliss of spiritual power.”

“We have been to such tours in Sri Lanka and Nepal; it is truly a great experience. Not only do you learn about their cultures but also share facts about your own traditions. So it is always a great exchange of cultural traditions on our tours,” he adds.

The group is flying to Singapore and then will proceed to a cruise from there. “This time we would hold the katha sessions once a day. Rest of the time the members would be free to explore the place,” says another member of the group going for the cruise. “It is an interesting trend that is emerging; there have been spiritual gatherings on trains and now there is katha on a leisure cruise. Pilgrimage and spiritual tourism are slowly coming together,” says a tour organiser.

Right in your backyard

Yarn bombing is a type of graffiti or street art that comprises colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fiber rather than paint or chalk. Also called guerrilla or urban knitting, yarn bombing is a new form of art defined by the use of brilliant colours and a sense of humour that goes into creating it.

You might find knitting an old-fashioned hobby and wonder what it has to do with landscape or landscape architecture?

The answer is - a lot! Knit graffiti is an international guerrilla movement that started underground and is now embraced by crochet and knitting artists around the world. Its practitioners create stunning works of art out of yarn. Yarn bombing takes up the matronly craft and transfers it to the concrete and steel wilds of the urban streetscape.

The half-forgotten art of knitting has hit the streets now. The colourful pieces that artists create are showing up on trees, lamp posts, monuments, benches, and other elements of everyday cityscape. It is anything but boring or old-fashioned! On the contrary - it is funky, inventive and very fashionable!

As a landscape designer, I recommend that you give it a try and why not do it to your own backyard? Make your kids help you pick the brightest colors and then twist patterns around a few tree trunks, boring fences and railings in your yard. Not only it is an inexpensive way to add splashes of color to your yard, also the yarn won't damage the trees and it's easy to remove it all when you get tired of it.

(Sukhmani is a Chandigarh-based interior and landscape designer)

Do it yourself

  • Make your tags smaller than your object and stretch the piece so that it hugs the object tightly.
  • Start with objects smaller in size like a pole or a tree with a slender trunk, something you will finish doing in no time. This way you can gradually graduate to bigger, time-consuming objects.
  • As you start doing yarn bombing, pick an easy pattern for your tag. Using patterns that can be completed quickly will again help you from getting discouraged with the process.
  • Use bright contrasting colours to make the object you're working on stand out.

Doc Talk
The brow basics
Dr Vikas Sharma

As we age, our eyebrows begin to droop, which results in an angry, worried, or tired appearance. Brow elevation (also known as brow lift or forehead lift) is a way to elevate and stabilize the droopy eyebrows. A brow lift is designed to correct the ageing features, restoring a more youthful, rested appearance with uplifted contours and improved tone in facial skin and underlying muscles.

Expressions matter

When we are angry, we may frown, creating a furrowed forehead or brow. A low or sagging brow may make us appear sad or tired, even when we are not. Unfortunately, for some people such features can become permanent because of overactive muscles in the forehead and brow region, heredity, or the way in which we age. If you are bothered by the development or presence of lines or other signs of aging in the forehead and brow region, the procedure of brow lift may be right for you.

The technique minimizes the creases that develop across the forehead, or those that occur high on the bridge of the nose and between the eyes

  • Improves what are commonly referred to as frown lines
  • Repositions a low or sagging brow that is hooding the upper eyelid
  • Raises the eyebrows to a more alert and youthful position

It's a procedure to improve the appearance of your facial region between the upper eyelids and the scalp, extending to the temples. It improves low placement or sagging of the brows and minimizes the appearance of lines and creases on the forehead. A brow lift can be performed alone or in conjunction with other rejuvenation procedures such as eyelid surgery or a facelift. The procedure is best suited for adults whose facial tissue and muscles are in good condition and who have realistic goals for rejuvenation of the upper area of the face.

Your brow lift will be customized according to your skin type, muscle tone, forehead height, and bone structure and what exactly you are aiming for.

Brow lift can include surgical methods like :

  • Internal brow elevation (Browpexy)
  • Corrugator muscle removal
  • Endoscopic forehead lift

In the last few years, all efforts have been directed to the development of alternative techniques to the classical invasive surgical methods. The two most popular and less time consuming techniques of eyebrow elevation include:

n Curl lifting technique- This includes soft tissue elevation using smooth threads tied up to the level of the hairline. The threads are inserted under the skin in two different surgical plans.

n Brow lift with botulinum toxin - Botulinum toxin has many uses in dermatology, including brow shaping. But, sculpting eyebrows with botulinum toxin type A requires technical expertise of dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon. A brow that is too low will result in patients who appear tired. One that is too high or too peaked will be seen in those who appear quizzical. And somewhere between these two extremes is the Goldilocks' brow, the one that is "just right".

Using botulinum toxin type A for brow sculpting can lead to excellent results; however, it is a technique that requires recognizing the differences among individuals, on the basis of age and sex. For instance, men tend to need horizontal orientation of their brows while women require arches. Brow treatments for men are in general much simpler. One significant difference from women is that treatment of the brow in men may require 50% more botulinum toxin.

Brewing the future

Neera Sareen While most of us banish the idea of occult and future telling on the pretext of it being the unknown, which we conveniently put in the box of supernatural, thereby validating its existence, astrology continues to remain an ancient science. Nevertheless, in their endeavour to explore the supernatural, the occult enthusiasts, throughout the world have come up with new avenues to contemplate the unknown, the newest of which is coffee cup reading and wine reading. Neera Sareen, a spiritual healer/guide or a 'light worker' as she calls herself, has been in the field for over twenty years now and has been featured on several television channels, including Zee Business, and shows like Kismat Connection on Sahara Channel and Shraddha Channel. In the city, at Monica's Kitchen and Kaffe, Neera Sareen anticipates a response to a rather new form of future telling technique, which she says are cent percent accurate and have a scientific reason as she is accompanied with a spiritual therapist, Aalok Sood.

Neera, who is a tarot card reader, spiritual healer, astrologer, crystal ball gazer and psychic reader, shares with us the secrets of coffee cup reading, which makes for an interesting session while we watch her perform the technique. "I prefer using Turkish coffee and since one tastes with their taste buds, which are connected with the pineal gland that stores the sub-conscious data of our memory, the coffee takes the energy from the pineal gland through the taste buds and draws patterns and images," she says. The entire process takes an hour, where Neera brews you half a cup of Turkish coffee asking you to leave just about a tea spoon when you are about to hit the rock bottom. In that little of what is left, she adds over two table spoon coffee and revolves the cup twice. Meanwhile, she daintily places a paper napkin on top of a saucer and turns the cup full of coffee upside down. While a bold pattern is formed on the saucer, the remains of coffee in the cup form interesting patterns, which tell us about the future.

"The images formed on the rims suggest the immediate future, what lies at the bottom suggests the life pattern," says Neera. "While the fish represents transformation and shift of energies, birds represent independence and flight and the remaining little liquid at the bottom, if it flows along the bottom edges swiftly or without any obstruction, suggests free flow of money and finance," she adds. About the authenticity of results, Neera suggests that this method works best for those who do not know their exact birth date or time and since it has a scientific reasoning, the results are very accurate! Guess there is so much more to a cup full of coffee than just the caffeine… head out and know what's in your cup every weekend at Monica's Kitchen and Kaffe.

Master Chef
Fuel up for football!
Kandla Nijhowne

The football frenzy is keeping us awake at the wrong time. We just happen to be on the wrong side of the globe. As a result, we are watching our favourite game when we should be snoring in slumber land! Past midnight, one invariably gets into nibble-mode. Put away those snacks in foil bags. Prepare a delicious and filling salad that is healthy too. Chickpeas (kabuli chana) are flavoursome little fellows that adapt so well to a toss with crunchy veggies and a dressing. Avoid mayonnaise. It has heavy oil content. This yogurt dressing is light and mildly acidic. You can turn on the heat with a shot of pepper sauce or a sprinkling of chili flakes!

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups soaked and pressure cooked chana

1 medium sized onion

1 red bell pepper

2 cloves garlic

2 stalks of celery

1 small cucumber

3 tbsp fresh mint (or 11/2 tsp dried mint)

2 1/2 cups yogurt

1/2-3/4 tsp chili flakes (optional)

1-2 tbsp vinegar

2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 tsp whole dhaniya

1/4 tsp jeera

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

  • Tie yogurt in a piece of fine cloth and hang it from a hook. In 2-3 hours, you will have the residue in a creamy form.
  • Use a small pan and dry roast whole dhaniya and jeera. Grind coarsely when cool.
  • Chop onion, bell pepper, celery and cucumber.
  • Make a paste of the garlic cloves with the help of a rolling pin. Roughly tear up fresh mint into shreds.
  • Beat yogurt till it is smooth, then add the ground masala, garlic paste, vinegar, olive oil, mint, salt and pepper. Add chili flakes if you like.
  • Toss chana with cucumber, celery, bell pepper and onion.
  • Mix in dressing and stir to coat evenly. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

If you want a Greek style salad, omit dhaniya and jeera. Add fresh leaves of dried rosemary to the dressing. If you don't like raw garlic, sauté it in oil, then add to the dressing. Use capsicum instead of mint. Add some crumbled paneer to the bowl. Use yellow bell pepper instead of red. Add lemon juice instead of vinegar.

it’s rocking
Season’s delight

Here's a perfect cocktail to quench your thirst for music in summer. This is just in case you are missing out on the kind of music, which is a blend of a genius sound track and house music. Jubel is a song by French duo Klingande and has reached number one position in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg,.... Here is what the city folks have to say about the song!

Acoustic treasure

It is a beautiful song, especially the video, which is more like a virtual escape onto the beaches with music playing in the background. I love the quality of sound, specifically the lead vocals and saxophone.

Gautam Khanna, Web designer

Fresh feel

I really like the track. It has a very refreshing melody to it and the best part about the song is that one can listen to it anytime; it's a song for every occasion. I can listen to it before I sleep, when I party and even when I am driving. It's an awesome track!

Aman Singh, Private bank employee

All things perfect

I think it is one of my favourite songs so far. This song is a right mix of melody, good beats, great vocals and a wonderful video. Also, the lyrics are good, which is quite refreshing, when it comes to house music.

Vikramjit Singh, Agriculturist

What an act!

Lior Suchard, the Israeli origin master mentalist infotainer mesmerised a gathering of 600 odd people at a live show hosted at a hotel in Zirakpur on Saturday evening.

Lior Suchard entertained the audiences with his highly- developed skills of reading and influencing the minds of people. In his first show in Chandigarh, the world's most- talked about mentalist, spun a web around the audience who were left wonderstruck with his acts. Lior created an atmosphere, which heightened the interest of the audience. What kept them guessing at each stage in an act was his humorous style where he tried to 'misguide' them into believing he was getting to something else and performed something else!

Lior signed off with an amazing act in which he asked four volunteers to lie down on chairs arranged in a certain way with their legs bending perpendicular to the ground at the knees and overlapping each other. He then one- by -one, he pulled all the chairs from underneath them leaving them hanging without falling. — TNS

No ink for Daniel Radcliffe

Harry Potter' star Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that his parents would be angry if he gets a tattoo.

The 24-year-old actor is a fan of body art and would love to have a quote by his favourite playwright Samuel Beckett etched across his body, but he thinks his parents would go ballistic if they were to find out, reported a website. "I want the line from Beckett, 'Try, fail, try again and fail better', either on my arm or chest. Although I shouldn't really talk about tattoos in case my mum and dad hear about it," the actor said. — PTI

Give and take relationship

A still from the film The makers of Ek Villain have been advised by the Censor Board to make some changes if they want a "U/A" certificate instead if an "A" certificate. The Censor Board has a problem with the theme and some of the dialogues in the movie. Meanwhile, they say that Ekta Kapoor is miffed with Shraddha Kapoor for not turning up for promotional interviews held last week for Ek Villain. Shraddha's spokesperson says that she was unwell and has been doing city tours for the movie, anyway.

Are they back together?

Twilight star Robert Pattinson is reportedly staying with actress and ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart at her home.

The 28-year-old actor, who had confirmed earlier he is in touch with former co-star, stays at her place very often, reported a publication. "Rob doesn't have his own place in LA. When he is in town, he sometimes stays at the Chateau Marmont and very often at Kristen's when she's out of town," a source said. "This gives him the chance to hang out with Bear and Bernie," the source added. Bear and Bernie are the two rescue dogs, the couple shared when they dated. They now live full-time at Stewart's house. But Pattinson's stay at her home does not hint towards a patch up. "Rob and Kristen aren't romantic or anything, but they are still really close and would do anything for each other," the source said. — PTI

Box-office, this week

Fugly is ugly, indeed. The reviews for the movie have been very poor along with the reviews for the other releases, Chal Bhaag and Machhli Jal Ki Rai Hai. The only watchable movie this weekend is How To Train Your Dragon 2.

Fan mails inked in blood

Rohit Bhardwaj aka Yudhishtir of Star Plus' Mahabharat has set a fan following one could envy. While a female fan has gone to the extent of claiming on social media that he is hers, a girl from the south of India sent him an e-collage of and another one sent him a sketch of his. However, the craziest gesture from a fan so far was a letter written in blood!

When asked about the response so far, he says, "I am overwhelmed and happy that I am being appreciated as Yudhishtir. I wanted to look as real and convincing and thankfully, I am being appreciated. However, I don't like my fans doing weird things for me like writing a letter in blood. It's my humble request to all my fans there, please don't hurt yourself ever."

Candid confessions

With shows like Laagi Tujhse Lagan, Doli Armaano Ki and now Sasuraal Simar Ka, Aadesh Choudhry is climbing the ladder of success and popularity in the television world. His work is being noticed and the young actor does not mind quitting a show, if things do not work out for him. We talk to him about his roles and a lot more...

What prompted you to choose the show Sasuraal Simar Ka?

I think my character in the show is very interesting and it comes at a crucial point, where it provides an interesting twist to the story. I play the role of Vikrant Mehta, who is a criminal lawyer.

Why did you quit the show Doli Armano Ki?

The makers wanted me to do a role that I had not agreed to play and the story was changed too, which resulted in the change in my character too. So I decided that I would be better to leave the show than to stick with something that I am not comfortable with.

Is it true that you only want to do lead roles in a show?

Yes and why not? I have achieved some credibility through my work and I would like to keep climbing up instead of going down.

What is more important to you, being a part of a hit show, or a meaty role?

A meaty role works for me. If one performs well in the show, it will definitely be a hit. Right now, Sasuraal Simar Ka is suffering in terms of ratings, thus the need for this new twist. When new characters garner good ratings for the show, our job is done!

What, according to you, has been the highlight of your career?

I liked my role in the show, Laagi Tujhse Lagan. It started off as a positive character, which later went on to becoming negative. I had full liberty to perform and I was really attached to the show as I got into the skin of the character.

Filmy way

Rishina Kandhari, who has been seen in many television soaps, including Buddha and Khelti Hai Jindagi Aakh Micholi will be seen playing a cameo in the Bollywood film, The Villain. This is her first ever role in a feature film. A source reveals that she was to play Anurag Kashyap's wife in the film, but when KRK replaced Anurag Kashyap, she declined the offer. Later, Mohit Suri offered her the role of a victim in the same film, which was to be played by Nasserudin Shah's daughter, Heeba Shah. She accepted the role because she was free and went to Mauritius for the shoot.

On being contacted Rishina said, "Mohit Suri offered me a role after the audition. I was originally offered the role of Anurag Kashyap's wife, but when KRK was finalised to play it, I turned it down. I was then offered another role of victim. I am not concerned about who was considered for the same role earlier. One needs to begin somewhere in Bollywood and I guess this is it for me."

Director’s cut!

Samir Soni has acted for many years now, but not many know that he writes as well as he acts. He took one of his stories to his friend, Sanjay Suri, who is an actor and producer and he decided to produce it as a film. Samir will be directing this thriller film soon.

Going only to come back

Popular TV show, Comedy Nights with Kapil will go off air in September. The show's host and producer, comedian Kapil Sharma, confirmed the news on Twitter and said that the show will be back with new characters and new set.

"The show is going off air from September. However, we will come back with a new set and characters. Till then, keep smiling," he wrote on the micro-blogging site. — PTI

Twice the drama

Sooraj Thappar is experiencing the best of both worlds as he is working with Poonam Dhillon and Padmini Kolhapure in Sony Entertainment Television's show, Ekk Nayi Pehchaan. The actor cannot stop praising the two actors and is thrilled to be a part of a mature romance that is being shown on the show.

Worth the wait?

When Doli Armaanon Ki started, Siddharth Arora's character was important, but soon after Urmi's wedding, he disappeared from the show. However, Siddharth was asked to wait, apparently. Now, after four months, he has decided to look out for work rather than waiting for the makers to call him.

Action and reaction

Amitabh Bachchan's television debut in a fiction series, Yuddh, will feature him doing serious action. Rumour is that Big B has done some stunts in the film for an intricate scene. Apparently, he even wore a body rig for the important stunts despite his doctors advising him not to.
