Man held for abetment as wife ends her life

Mohali, June 15
The Mohali police today arrested a man for abetment to suicide after his wife consumed an acid to end her life here.

The accused Balbir Singh’s wife Kulwinder Kaur had consumed acid on May 24 following alleged harassment at the hands of her husband and in-laws. She was undergoing treatment at the PGI but died today.

On the complaint of the victim’s father Niranjan Singh, a case under Sections 306, 511, 498 A, 323 and 334 of the IPC was registered against Balbir Singh, his mother Sarup Kaur and sister Prabhjot Kaur at the Phase-I police station.

In his complaint, Niranjan Singh alleged that his daughter got married to Balbir Singh, a Phase-I resident, in 2011 and she was being harassed for dowry and other issues by her in-laws.

Phase I police station SHO Sub-Inspector Rajiv Kumar said Balbir Singh was arrested today while the rest of the accused were at large.

88 held for drinking at public place

Chandigarh, June 15
The UT police arrested 88 persons for consuming liquor at public places.

A total of 64 cases under Sections 68/1/14 of the Excise Act were registered in various police stations of the city and 88 persons were arrested after they were found drinking in public on the intervening night of June 14 and 15.

Besides, the police also issued challan to a total of 61 persons for smoking in public.

Biker crushed under truck

Chandigarh, June 15
A motorcyclist was crushed to death by a truck at the Sector 25/38 light point on Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as Ajay Kumar (31), a resident of Sector 25. The truck driver, Baljeet Singh, who was driving in an inebriated condition, was arrested for causing death due to negligence and a case was regsitered against him at the Sector 39 police station. The accused was released on bail later.

The deceased is survived by his wife, two children and parents.

A medical examination of Baljeet Singh confirmed presence of alcohol in his body.

Unidentified body found

Mohali, June 15
The body of an unidentified man was found on the railway tracks near Jagatpura village here today.

Jagdev Singh, the GRP SHO of the area, said the victim, who seemed to be in his early 20s, was hit by the Ambala-Nangal passenger train but it was yet to ascertain whether it was an accident or a suicide case.

“From appearance, the victim seemed to be a native of Nepal. He had got ‘Om’ and SRK tattooed on his hand and shoulder, respectively. We did not find anything from him that could confirm his identity,” said Jagdev Singh. — TNS

Ludhiana youth challaned for illegal use of red beacon

Chandigarh, June 15
The UT police issued a challan to a youth for unauthorised use of red beacon atop his vehicle.

Harpreet Singh, a resident of Ludhiana, was driving a black car with a red beacon and a flasher on top of it while going to a discotheque in Sector 9 here when he was caught by the police.

On being asked, he failed to produce any document certifying the permission to use a red beacon. Harpreet Singh claimed that his father was an MLA from Ludhiana.

The police have seized the red beacon and issued a challan under provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Domestic help ends his life

Chandigarh, June 15
A 24-year-old domestic help allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree in a park adjoining the residence of his employer in Sector 18 on Saturday morning.

Dharminder Singh, who hails from Garhwal, was found hanging by a passerby. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

The police said the victim was working with his employer for the past four years. The victim’s family members alleged that he was murdered but the police have ruled out any foul play as there were no injury marks on the body.

The body will be handed over to the family after post-mortem examination. — TNS

Jaskeerat, Tarini, Arnav win chess titles

Jaskeerat Singh of Delhi Public School, Sector 40, Chandigarh, won the Open (U-15 years) while Tarini Goyal of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, claimed the girls’ (U-15 years) title on the concluding day of Chandigarh Open (U-15 and U-7) and girls’ (U-15) Chess Championship, at St. Xaviers’s Senior secondary School, Sector 44, here today.

Arnav Khushwaha of Delhi Public School, Sector 40, contesting in the Open (U-7) category, claimed highest points to win the trophy. A total of 50 players from different schools of Chandigarh participated in the championship.

In Open (U-15) category Jaskeerat Singh, Anubhav Tuknayat, Gagandeep Singh and Yogik Khurana were selected to participate in the nationals while in girls’ (U-15) category Tarini Goyal, Kashish Kaushal, Saumya Lamba and Nehal Saini will represent the city in the nationals. Both the events will be held in Kerala (under-15) from August 5 to 12.

In the Open (U-7) category Arnav Khushwaha and Shaunak Chaudhary are selected to represent Chandigarh in the Nationals to be held at West Bengal (U-7) from September 1 to 9.

Inter-district cricket tournament
Panchkula enter semis

The cricket team of Panchkula District Association (U-19) reached in the semifinals of the ongoing Haryana State Inter-District Cricket Championship. The Panchkula team defeated Chandigarh, Kurukshetra and Ambala to enter in the last four. In the last league match, Panchkula registered a 132 runs over Kurukshetra, at JR Sharma Cricket Technology Grounds (Barwala) Panchkula.

After winning the toss, skipper Sagar Sharma elected to bat. And the batting line-up stood firm on his decision setting a target of 244 runs in the allotted slot of 35 overs. Openers Ajay Duhan and Yash Rohilla collected 35 runs for the first wicket before Ajay was stumped.

Mayank Chaudhary took the guard along with Yash Rohilla and registered a 105 run partnership. Yash was the first to leave after scoring 56 runs, his second half-century of the tournament, including 97 runs against Chandigarh. Skipper Sagar joined Mayank and latter scored 88 runs with the help of eight boundaries. For bowling side, Naman Malik claimed 4 for 41 whereas Rakesh took 2 for 53.

In reply, the Kurukshetra team bundled out on a mere total of 112 runs with Shivam (23-runs), Ankit (21-runs) and Amit (21-runs) scoring major share. For bowling side, right arm leg spinner Karan Gupta claimed 4 for 21 whereas left arm spinner Mandeep Bhardwaj took 2 for 20 runs.

TT Assn announces annual sports calendar

The Chandigarh Table Tennis Association announced its annual sports calendar during the annual general meeting. It also elected Sukhmeet Grewal and Harish Kumar Kakkar as the president and the honorary secretary, respectively.

The association will host seven events in this session, along with a preparatory coaching camp.

Tentative calendar for 2014-15

  • Open Table Tennis Tournament from June 27 to June 29 by the Chandigarh Table Tennis Club.
  • 1st Ranking Table Tennis Tournament from July 11 to July 13.
  • Manav Mangal Open Table Tennis Tournament from July 27 to July 29 by Manav Mangal School.
  • New Public School Sector 18 Table Tennis (2nd) Ranking Tournament from August 8 to August 10.
  • Prof RS Mehta Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament from August 29 to August 31.

Harleen Kaur wins tennis title

Harleen Kaur defeated Shamita Yadav (6-1 and 6-0) to win the girls’ open category final on the concluding day of the Total Tennis Academy’s Circuit Tournament here.

Earlier in the semi-finals, Harleen Kaur defeated Harmanjot Kaur (6-0), while second finalist Shamita Yadav trounced Rupinderjeet Kaur (6-0). In the final of the boys’ (U-18), Nikhil defeated Jyot Shikhar (6-2 and 7-6(3)), whereas in the boys’ (U-12) final, Jasmol Arora beat Abhinav (7-6(5) and 6-1). In the final of the boys’ (U-14), Yuvraj Kooka defeated Jasmol Arora (6-1 and 6-1), whereas Adita defeated Harnoor (6-0 and 6-0) to win the girls (U-12) category.

Fifth tourney from June 18

The Total Tennis Academy will organise the fifth tournament of the Total Tennis Academy Circuit at The British School, Sector 70, Mohali. The tournament will be held from June 18 to June 20 in both boys’ and girls’ (U-12 and 14) events.
