Sport a trend
Sports and fashion have always been close buddies. In this FIFA World Cup, many new stars are set to make a sporty statement
Ashima Batish

Besides a pop-star-turned-fashion-designer wife, Victoria Beckham by his side, there is more to David Beckham that still crowns him as the football fashion icon. You see him hop, jump, skirt, swim in an H&M underwear commercial, wearing the 'bare minimum'. He is supposed to sell and you know why! Often spotted sitting in the front rows of the fashion weeks, he has strengthened the bond between fashion and sports, established initially by sports labels Nike, Adidas and the likes.

Picking the best player on the basis of his on field performance is one thing, but giving the title of a fashion icon to someone is another. This FIFA World Cup, it is an unofficial contest between Brazil's Neymar and Oscar, and a few European players. Sports labels are supporting teams and players by upping their fashion quotient, a hint of which you get from the merchandise in the retail stores!

Cleat it up

Against the cream and wood background of the walls of any Nike store, there is a deluge of neon - neon pink, neon green, neon orange, neon lemon….and you associated men with only blue and black! The change was introduced in 2010, when cleats were strictly in black. Orange, yellow and blue have made their way to the stadium and this time, it's brighter and more colourful. It's the official apparel and gear partner of ten football teams, including Brazil, Portugal, Greece and France. Neymar, who is touted as the next Beckham, style wise, will be seen in neon pink cleats, fancily named Hypervenom by the brand. His teammate David Luiz will be seen in yellow ones.

The rival sports brand, Adidas, apparel sponsor of three teams — Germany, Argentina and Spain - on the other hand has a subtler colour palette. What is designed in cleats for the German team is a derivative of the fashion's favourite - print, leopard dots - and the collection is aptly titled Battle Pack. Now practicality and science haven't been bartered for fashion, the length and space between spikes depends on the position of the player on the field! "Like, Ronaldo used to wear sharper spikes to run faster and avoid skidding on the field," comes from Manoj Sadera, store manager at Adidas, Elante.

Colour code

The teams have stuck to the original colours - yellow for Brazil, white for Germany, red for Spain and Portugal; white and blue strips for Argentina. Fashion designer Shantanu Singh's favourite colour on the field is yellow of the team Brazil. "It looks bright on the green of the field. Also, it is human psychology; we tend to find successful people good-looking. And Brazilian team boasts of some great players." His favourite is also Neymar. "I like his unconventional hair style." Also, the light and dark stripes in red make the Portugal jersey look the best among the lot. Sahil Batra, a football player from Chandigarh, couldn't agree more, "The colour of Portugal jersey is the best; the stripes make it look stylish."

Front board

So, it is contest between Wayne Rooney, Neymar Jr, Lionel Messi and Oscar…the Neymar Jr underwear ad has already grossed over 60,000 hits on YouTube. Likewise, Lionel Messi's Gillette boasts of 1.6 lakh ads. But Sahil is predicting Neymar as the fashion icon of the World Cup. And so is Ramneek Sandhu, a city-based footballer, "The benchmark that David Beckham set is difficult to meet but with all the fashion brands doing the right things for the present day footballers, you never know." While in the past, Armani has backed Kaka of Brazil, Dolce and Gabbana made Messi spot the label, this time D&G is looking forward to marking its presence on field. The Italian national team will be dressed in suits and sweaters by the labels that the players are supposed to wear before and after matches. "Ultimately, the most stylish will be the one who kicks the ball inside the goal," Gaurav says. Beckham being an exception again!

Wrap it up
Cars with metallic wraps are the latest craze with Ludhianvis
Gurvinder Singh

You felt a mirror zip past you. You do a double take - was that a car? That is a spanking new, swanky, scintillating car indeed! Metallic car wraps are catching up these days. Shoo away the white, black and grey, which dominate the car colours, people are jumping to add bling to their automobiles. Jasjeet, who got his white BMW, chrome-wrapped says that his car has become the cynosure of all eyes that see it. "Although there are many more expensive cars in the town, but thanks to the super shine, it draws all the attention. Even the policemen were awestruck seeing the car," he says.

When the car is parked, people come and touch to see what material it is. "It is not a colour, but a chrome wrap. As it is a wrap, the original colour of the car remains intact. The good part is that being a wrap, it can be changed or removed at will," he beams. The wraps are available in various colours, including silver, golden, chrome, black chrome and matte versions.

Ritesh, an automobile enthusiast, says that he used to imagine cars that are all metallic and wore a shiny look. "Although it is just a wrap, but finally it breaks the mould of the white, black and grey colours. Car colour should be interesting and creative, and getting chrome wraps is a step in that direction," he says.

"What is particularly awesome about it is that being just a wrap, which looks like a real colour, it can be removed or changed as one likes," says Jasjeet. "It is an expensive procedure, but those who can afford it are willing to get the new metallic wraps done," says a person from a car accessories store. "Not many people are willing to risk the original colours of the car. Only those who are passionate about giving their cars a new look go for such wrapping. Car parts are removed and put together again for giving it a professional wrap," he adds.

Fashion Funda
Quirky & surrealistic
Ashima Batish

The fashion fraternity took notice of Nitin Bal Chauhan's designs for their quirkiness. His Bhootsavar series promoted him as one of the India's most promising young fashion designers. Continuing his journey with quirky prints, he is now making a debut in the accessories segment as well. He makes a fashion forecast and you know you have to be all ears!

What's in

There are a lot of options to go for this summer. Summer jackets, a trend that triggered last year is blooming right now. Team up a jacket with shorts, short skirt, cropped pants to up your style quotient. Pick clothes in sheer fabric and wear inner layer in a contrasting colour. High-waist skirts, shorts will continue to remain in fashion. Also asymmetric hemlines will be more popular than the usual ones.

What's out

Nothing in particular is out of fashion. Fashion, I believe is very subjective, whatever suits one's body type should be worn. But in summer, I feel, it's better to wear anti-fits. Give yourself a break from skinny jeans.

Colour count

Teal is the colour of the season. Also, we will see a lot more of colour blocking, especially with primary colours, wherein we will see a blue colour blocked with green colour blocked with red. Also try burnt colours, a burnt orange or green for example. These are considerably new colours and will look good.

Leading in design

I really look forward to the collections by Iris Van Herpen, a Dutch fashion designer, who experiments like nobody else with silhouettes.

Dressed to the nines

A Bollywood celebrity who loves to experiment with styling and has seldom gone wrong with it is Sonam Kapoor. She never fails to impress with her fashion sense.

On the Indian fashion industry

We are growing season by season. We know how to interpret trends that are internationally forecast according to the Indian climate and fashion sense. Also we manufacture and present fashion the fastest as compared to the rest of the world, for we have almost four seasons. While couture continues to be the most dominant collections, we are faring extremely well in the prêt sector as well.

A singer in the making

Impressed by the depth of Shraddha Kapoor's voice in the trailer of Ek Villain, director Mohit Suri decided to take her voice beyond the song and convinced singer-composer Raju Singh to integrate her voice in the background score of Ek Villain.

Hence Shraddha Kapoor came for the recording. "In Ek Villain, the background holds a very important part as it is the love story of a villain and one needs to keep darkness in the romance element as well," explains Raju Singh. "Mohit has an amazing music sense. And I felt this even with his film Zeher. His sensitivity towards portrayal of relationships never ceases to amaze me. This time, Mohit mentioned Shraddha and the moment I heard her voice, I knew here was a singer with amazing potential."

This is the first time that a mainstream actress is not just singing a song [Galliyan unplugged version] but also lending her voice to the film's background score.

Music is in Shraddha Kapoor's veins, with her grandfather Pandrinath Kolhapure being not just a celebrated singer and a vichitra veena exponent but the cousin of singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle.

Shraddha Kapoor in the recording studio"Raju Singh has this never-say-die attitude. He will work on a film to the fullest. And this has always inspired me," admits Mohit Suri. "We work at times all night. And now I am glad that Shraddha is also a part of this creative process with her soulful voice." Shraddha grins, "When Mohit first heard me sing, he said, hmmmm…. And that is it. I am so glad I am here."

A friend indeed!

Padmini Kolhapure, who has many films to her credit, has now taken to television. She will now be seen in the daily soap, Ek Nayi Pehchan. She talks about the show and more.

How is it like to be working in television?

I am glad to be working and though initially, it felt a different, but soon, I got accustomed to the long working hours and the memories of working in movies came rushing back.

What prompted you to choose this show?

I chose Ek Nayi Pehchan because Poonam Dhillon, who is already doing the show, recommended my name and persuaded me to take the role. It was because of her that I decided to do the show. Also, the makers did not give me much time to think; perhaps if they had, I might not have done it, but I am glad to have made this decision.

What difference do you find between TV and films?

For an actor, acting is the same be it big or small screen. I am doing theatre as well so it's just the medium has changed. TV is doing very well and hugely in terms of channels and viewership. Through a show one can reach into the homes of people in every corner of India and even abroad.

Will you be doing films now?

Not right now. I am looking at scripts, but nothing is final yet. — HRM

Fitness mantra

Buzz is that Gautam Rode, who is currently seen in Saraswatichandra, may soon turn into a professional dietician. The actor has already been doling out fitness tips to his friends and family and aims at getting proper training on the subject of fitness and nutrition.

Surprise ahead!

In up and coming episodes of the show, Veera, Gunjan (Farnaz Shetty) and Veera (Digangana Suryavanshi) will plan surprise birthday parties, separately, for Ranvi (Shivin Narang), but he will attend Veera's party, which will leave Gunjan fuming red in rage. Ranvi will sing a song at the party, where a music director will ask him to record the song professionally.

Focusing on television

Kinshuk Mahajan, who returned to television after a yearlong break with the show, Encounter, was busy shooting a South-Indian film. Apparently, he was offered roles in many ongoing television shows, but could not take them up because of his film commitment. Now, he plans to focus only on television.

Glad to be back

Indresh Malik, aka Bittooji of Madhubala-Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, is thrilled to return to the show. He was not in the show for two months because he was shooting for a film, but he is glad to be back on the show now.
