A tough call
Let alone retakes, there are no second chances. Theatre's biggest lessons come from the fact that it is live, three- dimensional and instant. Whatever lessons are left are taken care of by hard taskmasters and mentors rolled into one. Nadira Zaheer Babbar is never really in a sparing mode when training aspiring actors. "I am very demanding and I make them work really hard. That is because I work hard myself," she shares, while in Chandigarh for a weeklong acting workshop. For, as she likes to put it, "there are no pills for acting. It is not something you can take during bedtime and when you wake up, one will be an actor."
She adds, "During the first two- three days itself I come to know the caliber of a student…Today's generation is always in a hurry." Some of the observations she's made while taking workshops for the past two decades. "Theatre workshops are like a mission, I started some 18 years ago through my organisation Ekjute. The idea was that we will take minimum money…That is the reason I charge one tenth of what others would." The end of the workshop is followed by a play Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan. Presented by Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi, in collaboration with Ekjute Mumbai, the play has been written and directed by Nadira herself. While theatre may be going through the introductory stages to being initiated into curriculum, what will change things forever will be the funding. "Theatre will become mainstream and big once it starts paying actors. If you can earn, make a living and support a family through theatre; it will be taken differently.
Up next
The adapted character of Mrs Bennet in Bride and Prejudice remains etched in the audiences mind, as much as her very recent Jai Ho. There is nothing in the pipeline as of now. "Only if I get a good role." The condition remains and extends to Punjabi cinema as well. "I can speak Punjabi but not fluently enough. If I get a good project and if they can find a person who can dub for me…" What's instead in the pipeline is a dream project that again aims at contributing to theatre. "I'd really like to make a theatre hall somewhere in Mumbai and run it properly." Son Arya Babbar, while actively seen in the Punjabi cinema, is just as active in theatre as well. "He is quite active in theatre. He recently completed writing a play titled Gorki plus Tinku ke Karname. It is a haliraious, crazy play." She adds, "I have seen every film of his. I do tell him when and where I feel required. But I am not somebody who will sit all judgmental and give opinion on everything." She would rather rain them tough before. It is time for the students, waiting in the next room, to take over. The play to be staged on 7th June at Tagore Theatre-18 at 6.30 pm.

Making noise
Good music played in any corner of the world will make some noise everywhere else. Which is why the dance music being played in the clubs of Holland is being heard loud and clear right here. East and Young, the DJ duo from Holland are just back from the high of a performance in Delhi and are looking forward to what it is like in Chandigarh. "This has been the first time in India. Delhi was a nice experience, good friendly people… We don't know much about artists here but we met Nikhil Chinappa and exchanged a few notes over music. He is a really cool guy," shares Marc Vano, hours before his Saturday night performance at The Blue Blazer, where they shall be playing, "progressive house and some cool tracks."
Joining him in the musical endeavour is Ivo De Jong and together they have been making some serious noise since 2009. "We met at a music school in Holland and we got talking about music and shared a few ideas that clicked and the rest is history." Known for their fresh approach to electronic music, the duo draws in influences from far and wide despite being firmly rooted in progressive house. "We combine different styles to make the kind of music we do." As for predominant artistic influences, he mentions, "Axwell and Swedish House Mafia. Their style is really unique." The duo is credited with hits like their debut track Reveal and lately Starting Again featuring Tom Cane. When not playing to the crowds, "It is a lot of pop music, reggae, dance music and anything random. I love music in general." It is love that goes back to childhood. He recalls, "I must be 9 or 10 years old and I started with remixes and techno music." Bollywood sounds Greek save for, "a few videos we saw and it is quite catchy. I don't understand anything but I quite like it." The music scenario back in Holland can be summed up in a few words. "It is all about club dance music. That is really big in Holland as you hear it everywhere right from on the radio stations to clubs. That is why a lot of successful international names in music industry are from Holland. You hear a lot of DJs coming up from the place like Tiesto…." Like we said, good music will be heard everywhere else. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Stars in her eyes
Perhaps it is Poorvi Koutish's easy-going charm or the captivating demure, which blends effortlessly well with the intense jazzy texture of her voice. A former contestant of the show, Indian Idol, Poorvi was in Chandigarh at the inauguration of Saraswati Music, Dance and Cultural Academy, Panchkula, and while she exchanged an interesting banter with us about her music career, it appears that there is more to this 19-year-old than just a beautiful voice. This city girl took to singing courtesy her mother, who won the music show, Sa Re Ga Ma in 1998, and considers her as a role model. "I think I inherit music from my mother. She introduced me to music when I was very little and I have been performing since I was 3 years old," she says.
However, the idea of participating in Indian Idol did not quite come from her mother. "My mother was keen on getting me to into playback singing, but she never forced me since music came naturally to me. My school friend persuaded me to participate in Indian Idol and that was where it all began," she shares. Keeping in consideration, the increasing number of music-based reality shows, Poorvi feels that the popularity that these shows give you is of a significant value, but it is perishable and short lived. "Shows like Indian Idol and other reality shows are a good platform for entering into the Bollywood industry, but then on, it completely depends on what you make of the popularity and appreciation received. I think there is no substitute for hard work," says Poorvi, who topped the grade 7 vocal exam of Rock school, London. Presently based in Mumbai, Poorvi is pursuing her graduation in Anthropology and Literature. "I have signed a contract with Universal and am doing many concerts across the world, however, I would really want to do playback singing," says Poorvi, who rapped in the title song of the film, Shaadi Ke Side Effects. Poorvi seeks much inspiration from musicians like Stevie Wonder, Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole and wishes to experiment with different genres. "I really wish to sing a Kishore da song in reggae style, now that's the kind of music I like making," she smiles. amarjot@tribunemail.com

Crop it right
The sight of a painfully tight cropped top on a rather well-endowed woman and the hurt that the sight caused was motivation enough to write on how to wear a cropped top — the fashion style that owes its origin to the pop culture of the late 80s and early 90s.
While this trend came a full circle last summer, it is still doing the rounds on the shelves of some extremely fancy brands. From the city streets to the runways at Jill Stuart and Michael Kors and even Priyanka Chopra, everyone seems to be taking very fondly to this trend. When done right, the crop top is sexy, chic, and sophisticated, but there is no doubt that it does come with some warning tags and is quite a tough one to pull off. If hearing the word crop top conjures up scary images of belly-baring 90s pop-stars, you're not alone! It's certainly not the easiest trend to style and it takes a somewhat daring fashion sense (not to mention atoned tummy). However, pulling off the crop top does not have to be so intimidating. For one thing, a crop top does not automatically mean a bared belly button! There are plenty of ways to style a crop top so that you are showing only a demure hint of skin and not your whole stomach. Here are a few tips for wearing a crop top in a right way. All about proportions
When Coco Channel says that fashion is like architecture and it is all a matter of proportions, her idea might as well be extended to the understanding of cropped tops. To strike a balance with your tinier top, it is recommended that one wears a high-waist skirt or high-rise trousers. "You can wear high-waist jeans or palazzos or high-waist skirt with a cropped top if you have a pear-shaped Indian figure," says Priyanka
Khosla, the owner of Priyanka Khosla Fashion Studio in Sector 8. She suggests that if one is a little too plump, a five-inch broad belt, teamed with the cropped top will give it a perfect look. "Also, that way one can show only a sliver of skin, which can keep this trend lady-like," adds
Priyanka. Pair theory
"The key to pulling off a crop top is pairing it with a more conservative bottom. Since the pencil skirt is the epitome of sleek and sophisticated style, I love how it looks with a crop top," says Swati
Shrivastava, Delhi-based fashion designer. Tanya Saggi, a fashion student at Pearl Fashion Academy, shares that wearing a boxy, cropped tee is a little less scary than a skin-tight top. "I think boxy cropped tops work really well for women who are not bust heavy, as it adds volume to the figure," she says.

Managing the brewery now, he is happy offering four kinds of light beer -Weiss, Dunkel, Indian Pale Ale and Trappist, along with two fruit beers - orange and pineapple. Ten on ten
Ashima Batish
If ever someone has to be anointed as the face of fashion in Bollywood, the unanimous choice would be Kangana Ranaut. Have you ever seen her failing to make a fashion statement? Every time she makes a public appearance, it seems like she is dressed up for a cover shoot for a fashion magazine. Her recent appearances, first for the launch at a jewllery collection at Tanishq in a Burberry Prorsum and another at the birthday bash of Karan Johar, she proved once again that nobody in the industry knows fashion as much as she does. Dress material
She kept it uncomplicated, yet very stylish. Her looks in tones of grey comprised of a white beaded silk blouse teamed up with a metallic grey skirt with embossed detailing. The skirt from Burberry was a perfect choice for the occasion. It wasn't a pencil skirt, you could spot it gaining volume towards the hemline, only to make it straight in shape. Hair to stay
More than often, she lets her hair all tied up, a wise hair do for scorching summer. Also, it aptly shifts the focus on her face that has a very bony structure. Make-up
We have never seen her go over board with make-up and even this time, she has let it be subtle. She has blush on her cheeks, something she is wearing like second skin. And there is a hint of gloss on her lips. Only eyes are a bit heavily done with kohl but that makes the uber-chic look complete. Accessories
As always, she is wearing minimum accessories. There is nothing in her ears to take away the attention from her face. But don't we all know by now that she has a flair for fashion labels. She is flaunting a Louis Vuitton satin clutch and her silver strappy heels are from Tom Ford. Now, this time, we see her wearing a different label. It's to looks like these you give a perfect ten. ashima@tribunemail.com

Mix & match
Vishal Thukral Weight loss and loss of inches are important and related components to every weight loss plan but they don't always co-exist. During the initial days of gym training stepping up on the weighing scale and the feeling of unhappiness appears with what is seen on the scale. Wondering despite of doing everything right from eating right to exercise to shed few kilograms everything seems to be falling at the wrong place. Focusing on only weight loss overshadows the positive results of regular exercise such as fat loss, more endurance and higher energy levels. Losing inches versus losing pounds
Initially when one starts with cardio and strength training lean muscle tissues are formed along with losing fat. In that case scale may not change even though one is getting thinner and leaner. Logically, there should be weight loss too but mostly our body is not very comfortable with changing the weight so easily. It means during the first few weeks of training sessions if body gains three pounds of lean muscle and lose four pounds of fat it has actually experienced seven pounds improvement in the body condition despite the scale only showing one pound of weight loss. Fat is a big bulky substance that takes up a lot of space in body. When body loses fat then this space is freed and inch loss is noticed instantly. Stay positive
Many as a part of their weight loss programme become frustrated when they don't lose weight. They don't realise that training increases muscle size and muscle tissues weight more than fat. At the same time, body not only loses several inches while staying at the same weight but it is even also possible to go down a few sizes and gain weight. How exercise works for weight loss
Underlying reason for weight loss is quite simple which means burning more calories than what is required to take in. Sometimes individual situation might be slightly different in case of some medical reasons, but the fundamental principle remains the same. During weight loss, it is not uncommon to be losing inches not weight. How to break weight loss plateau
Weight loss plateau can easily be broken by making a change in the routine. If you work out at a gym, change your cardio routine. Try few minutes of mixed intense cardio work to be followed by few minutes of strength training exercises instead of spending more time on a one particular machine. Mix up routine so that it's not a routine. (Vishal Thukral is an aerobics fitness trainer)
