Promote dialects of Punjabi: Experts

Eminent Punjabi writers have stressed the need for promoting Puadhi, Malwai and other dialects of Punjabi. They also expressed their concern over the declining reading habit among young generation in this era.

Eminent writers Dr. Sukhdev Singh Sirsa, Mohan Bhandari, Manmohan Singh Daon attended the release of “Mera Jeevan; Meri Gatha” a biography of Gurbachan Singh Azad, a resident of Devi Nagar village, who was earlier awarded with the Gurbaksh Singh Kesari award for his works.

NK Sharma, MLA, Dera Bassi, released the biography at a formal function organized by the Sahitya Sabha, Dera Bassi, today. Veteran journalist Sham Singh ‘Ang Sang’, Gurdarshan Singh Saini, Harvinder Pal Singh, Bhupinder Singh Saini, Harnek Singh Saini, Kuljeet Randhawa and others attended the release.

Teenaged girl ends her life in Saketri

Panchkula, June 1
A teenaged girl of Saketri village allegedly ended her life in the wee hours today. She reportedly took the extreme step as she was caught by her family while she was returning home after visiting her boyfriend’s house last night.

The 17-year-old girl allegedly consumed certain poisonous substance and was found unconscious on the terrace of her house at about 5 am. Her alleged boyfriend, Gajinder, a resident of Karnal and property dealer by profession, was staying in the same locality. He is stated to be absconding.

Police sources revealed that the preliminary investigation revealed that the girl was in a relationship with Gajinder and her father Paramjit Singh spotted her while she was returning home after meeting him (boyfriend) at about 2 am.

After she was counselled by her parents, the girl went to sleep. However, her brother found her missing after three hours and raised an alarm. The family launched a search and found her lying unconscious on the terrace of their house, the police said.

The girl was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, where she breathed her last, the police said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mamta Sauda said in his complaint, the girl’s father alleged that Gajinder was pressuring her for marriage, which was unacceptable to them. The ACP added that as per Paramjit Singh, Gajinder had also been threatening the girl if she did not accept his proposal.

Following the compliant by the girl’s father, a case under Section 305 and other provisions of the IPC has been registered at the Mansa Devi Complex (MDC) police station.

Meanwhile, the police today got a medical examination of the body conducted to ascertain if she was sexually assaulted. The post-mortem would be conducted tomorrow, claimed Ajay Dishodhia, SHO, MDC, Panchkula.

This judoka is an all-rounder

Local judoka Shivam Garg scored has secured 92 per cent marks (non-medical), in senior secondary CBSE examination, along with bagging laurels in sports. In sports he attained laurels representing Chandigarh in national and his school, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16; in various inter-school judo and kick boxing tournaments. A trainee at judo centre of Sports Complex, Sector 42, practices judo over two hours a day and will continue to play.

“I am happy with securing marks and also nurturing my sports carrier side by side. I practice on daily basis and will continue to play hard. Sports has helped me to concentrate on my studies and disciplined to achieve my aim,” said Shivam. Besides playing at junior- national level, he has also played in invitational judo meets, in Nepal. He had won gold medal in 5th Indian open kickboxing championship and 12th JSKF annual national karate championship. He secured silver medal in international SKIF Kanazawa cup and open inter-state kickboxing championship. He won bronze medal in the inter-school judo meet in +71 kg for boys (U-19) and international Kanazawa cup held in Kathmandu.

Sagar beats Mohit in straight sets

Sagar Bains of Tennis Excellence Academy defeated top seed Mohit Bhardwaj in straight sets to move further in the semifinals of Sunny Enclave Tennis Excellence academy AITA (All India Tennis Association) talent Series for boys and girls (under-18 years) category, being held here today.

Marking his day, in the first set, Sagar played stokes to win the initial. However, in the second set, Sagar faced some resistance by Mohit. The latter kept on playing close to net but failed to stop Sagar to win the game 4-1 and 5-4(0).

In a pre-quarterfinal match, Raunaq Singh Marwaha beat second seed Parth Aggarwal in straight sets 4-0 and 4-0, Digvijay Partap Singh beat Raunaq Singh Marwaha 4-0, 4-2 in the quarter finals.

Sagar Bains will face Kabir Manrai and Harjasleen Singh will face Digvijay Partap Singh of CLTA (Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association) in the semi finals of the championship.

In the girls section, fourth seed Kavya Gupta struggled hard to break serves of Charvi Saxena, in a match, lasted for over one hour, Kavya outclassed her rival 5-4(5) and 5-4(6). Top seed Seerat Kaur Pannu and second seed Seerat Sidhu also sailed through in the semi finals by beating their opponents in straight sets.

Harnoor, Pratham win chess titles

Chess player Harnoor Singh and Pratham Puri securing 4.5 points in five rounds emerged champions of their respective categories on the concluding day of the Mohali District Chess Championship, held at The British School, Sector 70, today. Harnoor Singh with his best score of 4.5 points won the boys (under-19 years) category event whereas Pratham Puri claimed boys (under-14 years) title claiming 4.5 points. The 2-day long championship witnessed a massive participation of over 45 players played in under-11 and under-19 categories of boys and girls.

In the girls (U-19) category Saumya Gohil lead the day scoring 2.5 points after three rounds whereas Prathna Kapoor securing one point after two games to lift under-11 title. Tilak Raj Sethi Director, The British Schools, awarded prizes to the winners.

Junior golf tournament to begin at city school on June 7

The 4th junior and junior Pitch ’n’ Putt golf tournament for boys and girls will start from June 7, at the 9-hole Miniature Golf Course of The British School Golf Academy, Sector 44, today. The tournament will be organised for golfers in the age group of 6 to 18 years under the supervision of technical support.

Giving information about the championship, Manjit Kochar, Joint Director, Academy of Golf, Chandigarh, said, “The participants will play two rounds of golf (9 holes each day). The categories will be A (16-18 yrs), B (13-15 yrs), C (10-12 yrs), D (below 10 yrs) and E (beginners-only putting).Prizes will be awarded in all categories to 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions. There will be special prizes for hole in one and nearest to the pin on both the days,” informed Kochar. The interested participants can confirm their entries with the organizers before June 5 (5pm). Those registering will be familiarized with the course through a practice round on June 6 from 8to 10 am. IPS Mann, vice-president, Chandigarh Golf Club, will inaugurate the event on June 7.

The two-day tournament will culminate with a prize distribution ceremony in the evening of June 8 with SPS Ghai, captain, Chandigarh Golf Club, presenting the awards. Kudos XI win corporate cricket cup

The cricket team of Kudos XI won the 1st Ashok Kumar Vij Memorial Corporate Cricket Cup defeating Placement Guru, in the final of the championship, held at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, here today. After electing to bat first, the winning side posted a healthy total of 231 runs in the allotted slot of 20 overs.

Standing by their skipper’s decision, opener Rajbir and Rajiv lead the team’s score chart and ensured a healthy total. Rajbeer contributed a quick fire knock of 91 runs off 36 while Rajiv supported with another quick fire 49 runs contribution off 28 balls. For bowling side, Rupinder (2 for 35) and Tejwinder (2 for 22) claimed two wickets each. Placement Guru failed to attain the target and scored 209 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs. Sarthak was the main scorer for his team scoring 62 off 40 balls whereas Manoj chipped in 32 runs off 13 balls. In dying overs, Rupinder reduced the margin contributing 24 runs off 18 balls. For bowling side, all rounder Rajbeer hogged the limelight claiming 3 wickets for 34 runs whereas Rajneesh claimed 2 wickets for 45 runs. For an overall performance, Rajbeer claimed the man of the match trophy and man of the series award while Ram Kumar was adjudged as the best bowler of the series. Sarthak and Rajiv were awarded with best batsman and best fielder awards respectively.

Saupin’s-32 team outclass CCA

Chandigarh, June 1
The cricket team of Saupin’s School, Sector 32, outplayed Chandigarh Cricket Association (CCA) by 10 wickets, in a match of Chandigarh Cricket Association (CCA) for boys (U-12 years), held at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, today.

Batting first, the CCA side scored a low total of 129 runs in 35 overs. Suraj was the main scorer for his team scoring 32 runs and he was equally supported by Jashan who scored 24 runs.

For bowling side, Atul claimed 2 wickets for 18 runs.

Chasing the target, Saupin’s led the day with achieving the target without losing any wicket.

Atul (56 runs) and Gauravdeep (52 runs) remained unbeaten in 25.4 overs and lead the team to victory. — TNS
