Aishwarya Can-nes!
The red carpet at Cannes hosts celebs from across the globe each year. This year, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s dazzling persona has eclipsed that of most...so feels the fashion fraternity

GLITTERING DIVA: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
GLITTERING DIVA: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

This time, she has nailed it…completely. With every step she took and every pose she struck, she made the world get up and take notice of her new-found curves, of her porcelain skin and of her impeccable choice for her first Cannes Film Festival outing this year.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looked stunning in a Roberto Cavalli strapless fishtail gown with her lips done in red, minus the baggage of accessories except for a huge yellow stone ring.

She is back with a vengeance, silencing her critics and giving her fans a reason to cheer. Twitter is abuzz with comments about her turnout on the red carpet even as fashion designers give it thumbs-up. Nachiket Barve, a designer, took to Twitter in no time post the pictures were posted across the social media. "She has come back to her original shape, but we must appreciate that she didn't rush into losing weight after becoming a mother," says the fashion designer, who feels her choice for the festival is praiseworthy. "It's one solid colour from head to toe, the cut is uncomplicated; her make-up perfect and so is the hair-do." Her make-up is winning her a lot of compliments. Reena Dhaka, another renowned fashion designer, says, "With her less is more. Her make-up was subtle and that made her red lips get a lot of attention. She looked spectacular."

She has certainly lost weight and this time, she has let the well-fitted outfit do the talking. It highlighted her hourglass figure. Designer Nishka Lulla shares her take, "She stole the thunder at Cannes. She is the best at this year's edition of the film festival so far." And a lot of compliments flowed in for her on Twitter. While Bipasha Basu tweeted, "She is sizzling!Hottie and how! Please tell her love the way she is looking!" (sic), husband Abhishek Bachchan, expressed his thoughts too, "Almost 52hrs without sleep! Eyes shutting… and the Mrs. Shows up looking like this!! Ok.. Eyes wide open now!" (sic) That's all so believable.

Life is a pie
Ayush Tandon faced the camera as a five-year-old. A decade later, he is going strong and has done substantial roles, including the one in Oscar-winning movie Life of Pi…
Gurvinder Singh

SCREEN SHOT: Ayush Tandon Photo: Himanshu Mahajan Ayush Tandon has hit the highway to success early in his life and there is no stopping this fifteen-year-old. When children barely start to play with a toy-camera, he was performing before cameras at the age of five and one after the other he has done more than 50 advertisement films!

He also won a dance reality show Chhota Packet Bada Dhamaka in 2008 and bagged a role in Priyanka Chopra’s movie Saat Khoon Maaf.

Then came the 'big turning point'; says Ayush. "We got to know about the audition and they gave me a ten-page script to learn as well as perform the next day. After the auditions, I got a call that I had been shortlisted for the role," he reminisces. "Then I got a call that Ang Lee wanted to meet me in Taiwan to check out my acting skills and looks in person. At that time, we didn't even know who he was and when we researched about him, we realised how important the opportunity was," he adds.

He practiced hard on the accent and the language; four-hours of make-up to match the looks of Pi and following an acting workshop, he was part of the movie that went on to win four Oscars. "It is now that I realise all the more how Ang sir 'culled' acting from us. Even Suraj who plays the elder Pi was a debutante," he says. Having seen the 'perfectionist' world, Ayush now has high aspirations and wants to work in international movies.

His father Hatinder Tandon, who has also been a theatre and television actor, looks at his son with pride not only because of his success as a parent, but also a satisfaction that Ayush is living his dream. Hailing from Ludhiana, it was the 'acting dreams' that took him to Mumbai and now his son is accomplishing each dream.

"I never let him do just any advertisement or role. Even the commercials are selective and are of top-notch brands. I never let him do any television series roles. Even now offers pour in from big banners for the bhai-bhatija-beta roles, but it is clear that he would only do roles that are lead or substantial ones," says Hatinder.

Having tasted success and seen the international movie world, Ayush has high aspirations. "My dream is to walk the Red Carpet and touch the Oscars. Not only touch, I want to win it and other major international film awards," says Ayush, who has taken class tenth exams this year.

"As a child stepping into his teens, we have to keep him grounded and tell him that success in this industry is not a permanent thing. And it comes only with hardwork and dedication. Doctors or engineers become professionals after they qualify exams, but there is no guarantee of success in this field," says Hatinder.

Ayush is well on his way to doing an international film in the lead role now. "It is a surreal film that deals with the subconscious mind. It is a very different movie and a different role," he says. In another movie with a UK film-maker, he is playing the childhood role of an NRI.

India calling
Mona

HAPPY GUEST: Kavi Shastri Photo: Manoj Mahajan
HAPPY GUEST: Kavi Shastri Photo: Manoj Mahajan

This one chose madness over method! Born and brought up in London to a Gujarati mother and Tanzanian father, Kavi Shastri was going steady in UK's telly scene when impromptu he moved base...to Mumbai. Some films, other telly and stand-up comedian stints over the weekends, Kavi is all set to debut as a host for Bindass' show Love by Chance next. In Chandigarh on Wednesday, Kavi talks in his proper British accent and 'passable' Hindi.

By chance

Acting is an unconventional career choice but it just happened. I was not so good at academics and bad at sports, so I followed my uncles who did Gujarati theatre (my dad too plays a villain with them). I started working when I was 12. My first Hindi film was Kapra, Biwi and Makaan (Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, we can excuse him...he barely started speaking Hindi when he moved to Mumbai!). Main Khiladi Tu Anari can be called crucial for my move...I was happy to see a hero who could do anything!

Mumbai world

In UK, there are many Indian actors but mostly stereotyped. If I had to be a stereotypical Indian, I thought why not be that in India? Mumbai opened up a whole new field of opportunities. Shooting an advertisement in the morning, addressing a crowd of thousands at night and shooting the next day, I get to do so much; I just love it all.

Changing times

Yes, life in UK and India is very different. While everything is set there, in India almost nothing is that way. There is no reporting time, no getting back home on time and I like it. When it comes to Indian community, out there in UK they are still living the life of the 70s...holding on to values, clinging on to 'Indian-ness'...hardly realising that Indians in India have moved on from the 70s era and are way more progressive. Wait for another five years (it has nothing to do with the new government, politics here is too complicated for me to follow), India would be the place people would love to be in.

Telly tale

In movies there is a chance for a retake, but TV is tricky. I turn a host with Love By Chance and find it way more challenging than what all I have done so far. It's a fresh show that focuses on how innocent the beginning of a romance can be and one can keep it that way for life. Different episodes bring different stories.

Comic angle

Comedy is not what I aimed for. I am not funny, but quite a boring person in real life. Mine is very British, very dry humour. Comedy scene is really looking up here in India. There is young talent out there to take the centrestage. There are as many men as women. What you will see in Love by Chance is different, not slapstick kind of humour.

Personal note

I totally believe in the concept of falling in love. I bumped into Sherryl, who was accompanying a friend of mine from London, at a church in Bandra, Mumbai; we hit a bar at night and by the end of it I was madly in love with her. And four years ,n I am still as mad about her and hope she too is!

It’s magical
It's much more than food at Barbeque Nation as Merry Madness Extravaganza offers music, magic and dance
Amarjot Kaur

In their propensity to entertain customers while giving them a little more than just good food, the city restaurants, lounges and pubs are banking heavily on live shows, which in a lot many ways benefits both, the local talent and the eatery.

While at the Barbeque Nation, the Merry Madness Extravaganza goes beyond just the live music band as it gets on board, a magician and a dance troupe. The grand entry posters resembling the kinds that are typical of the ones at annual kid's fairs grab our attention and the door only leads to a rather fulfilling experience.

As we walk in, absent-mindedly following the aroma of chicken, we are welcomed with a performance of salsa by Black Diamond Group and followed by a solo music act by Francis, a Kolkata-based musician. However, what entices us is the childlike excitement at the mention of a magician named Amazing David.

Call it magic, call it truth

Hailing from Kolkata, David has been associated with Barbeque Nation for a while now and he has several tricks up his sleeve, most of which he picked up during his visits to children fairs.

"I would catch hold of the magician and would pay him about Rs 10 to learn a trick," he says. David is essentially a visual illusionist and he has performed at several magic festivals, in India and abroad. He has performed at the Maldives for the royal family of Bhutan and the Indian Festival at Bahrain. "Soon, I will be off to Kerala to compete with the other magicians at the World Magic Summit," he shares.

David, 26, has been in the profession for over six years now and believes that being a magician, especially in India, is very challenging. "There are a lot of stereotypes involved with being a magician. One expects you to be wearing a hat and entertain children at the kid's birthday party, but being a magician is quite like being an artiste," he says.

On a musical note

Singer Francis Lepcha, a one-man band, is a Kolkata-based musician and he sings with his laptop track. "I draw much influence from the pop music of the 90s and Michael Jackson is my idol, so there's a lot of pop music that I do. However, when in Chandigarh, I take to performing a couple of covers by Honey Singh," he says. Francis has performed at several music festivals, including the Muscat Festival, where he covered most of the Bollywood songs. "The idea is to play what people like, so I stay at a safe side. When in Muscat, I play famous Khan-starrer songs,” he shares. Meanwhile, the vocalist of Chandigarh-based Noor band, shares that since the audience is taking to Sufi music, they stick to it, but also they explore other genres. The band has performed extensively across Punjab.

the ‘in’ side
Mirror mirror on the wall
Sukhmani

Mirrored walls are back..! Yes, before you think about the 70's trend and cringe at the thought, think again. Those disco era walls have been replaced by the new chic, classic, timeless mirrored walls that don't look tacky at all.

Today mirrors on the wall are a great way to make a huge decorating impact, not only by increasing the light and size of the room, but is also a fairly inexpensive way to update a room no matter what your decorating style is. Many of the antique finishes on these mirrored panels lend sophistication to a room.

The idea of mirrored walls is to visually increase the size of the room and give depth and size to small areas. It's an ideal way to add sparkle and glamour to your interiors.

There's a right way and a wrong way to use mirrored walls in interiors. Here are a few examples of the right way:

  • Add a moulding around mirror panels to create a large focal point in the room.
  • Instead of using clear mirrors, try using stenciled mirrors to create a dynamic impact.
  • Go for an antique finish on your mirror panels. Dated mirrored walls look super glam and chic.
  • Dinning rooms are especially elegant when mirrored walls reflect the light from the chandeliers or candles during your dinner party.
  • You can make a mirror wall by using multiple mirrors and group them together as wall art.
  • Add interest to your mirrored wall with millwork.
  • Do not hesitate from placing furniture in front of mirrored walls, just as you would with other walls.

Mirrored walls are not passé by today's standards. In fact they are becoming a popular trend. So go ahead and give it a try!

Doc Talk
Blood relation
One can now regain ones youthful skin with the help of platelet-rich plasma therapy
Dr Vikas Sharma

The latest and now the most popular procedure in cosmetic medicine and surgery is the introduction of injecting or applying person's own platelet cells, which is producing excellent results in reviving the youth and rejuvenation lost in skin and hair. You may have heard of injured athletes trying to enhance their healing using platelet-rich plasma therapy.

This therapy, popularly known as PRP therapy is now used in skin rejuvenation for individuals looking for gradual but noticeable improvement in skin texture, tone, and colour with minimal or no recovery time.

The procedure involves either injecting or topically applying your own platelets to 'heal' wrinkles and scars. By using your own plasma, PRP therapy provides a natural, minimally invasive alternative to surgery with virtually no side effects. That's why the therapy is becoming more popular among beauty conscious people.

How does PRP work?

Blood consists of approximately 93 per cent red blood cells (RBC), 1 per cent white blood cells (WBC) and 6 per cent platelets, all suspended in plasma. In platelet rich plasma, the RBC count is lowered to 5, since they are less useful in the healing process, while the platelet count is increased to 94 per cent.

PRP is 'autologous', meaning that it comes from the patient's own body.

Platelets help stop bleeding and spur repair of damaged blood vessels and cells. Growth factors contained in platelets activate and rejuvenate cells in our body. When platelets are used for the cosmetic treatment of face, arms, scalp hair and neck, the body is essentially tricked into triggering the production of collagen, which gives the skin a smoother appearance. In addition, every platelet is also a biochemical storehouse of regulatory, signaling and growth-factor molecules that participate in recovery and healing of tissue in response to injury.

As an autologous preparation, PRP is safer to use than allogenic or homologous preparations and is free from concerns over transmissible diseases such as HIV.

PRP effects soft tissue healing via growth factors released after platelet de-granulation.

What to expect

  • Blood is withdrawn from a patient's arm by syringe.
  • The tubes containing withdrawn blood are placed in a centrifuge.
  • Centrifuging separates the red and white blood cells and platelets and concentrates them at various levels in the tubes.
  • Blood plasma that is rich in platelets is drawn off for therapeutic use.
  • An activating agent (like calcium chloride) is added to activate the platelets.

Once the serum is prepared, it is injected or applied topically to the problem area.

Who can benefit?

People who want to add volume to their skin, scalp hair, reduce fine lines, or improve their skin's texture, but who also want to avoid plastic surgery, are ideal candidates for PRP therapy. Although the results aren't as permanent as a surgical procedure, you can still expect to see an improved appearance for about 18 months.

Hair loss disorders: PRP has been shown to reinvigorate dormant hair follicles and stimulate new hair growth.

Facial rejuvenation: PRP injections can treat wrinkles, photo damage and discoloration in conjunction together with other treatment modalities.

Post-traumatic scars: PRP combined with centrifuged fat tissue and fractional laser resurfacing improve cosmetic appearance of scars.

It’s Rocking
Eminem says sorry

Here comes the most awaited song of the season- Headlights by Eminem, featuring American singer and fun front man Nate Ruess. The fifteenth track on his eighth studio album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2013), it features production from Emile Haynie, Jeff Bhasker and Eminem himself.

The song is an apology to his mother Debbie Mathers, whom he has previously abused many times in his songs. It has since peaked at number 73 on the Billboard Hot 100. Eminem has had a difficult relationship with his mother since childhood. In his music, Eminem has had a history of insulting his mother on various tracks, including his debut single, "My Name Is" and most notably "Cleanin' Out My Closet." Headlights is an apology to his mother for the years of verbal abuse and his plea for a united, or at least less dysfunctional, family. The title Headlights is a reference to their last meeting. As she drove away, he became fixated on the headlights of her car as he coped with feelings of overwhelming sadness. In the song, Eminem refers to a few incidents from their rocky relationship, getting kicked out of the house on Christmas Eve, constant fighting, and his younger brother Nathan being sent to foster care. He also expresses regret that his mother has not been involved in his children's lives.

Overpowering emotions

This song made me cry. When the music becomes a part of you, you are just one with it, feeling it. And this song, with all its sentiments, overpowers you with its sheer sensitivity and an honest apology to a mother.

Amarinder Singh, web designer at TBA Studios

Apology from heart

It's a beautiful song. Most of the times when Eminem sings a sentimental track, he ends up mocking at you in the end, but with Headlights, things just got serious and this apology was long due, especially after he bad mouthed his mother so many times in so many songs.

Nayani Verma, student, Law Department, PU

Related song

I think everyone of us relates to this song. We all fight with our mothers and I don't think that there is enough time in a lifetime when we can tell her how much we love her or apologise for all the (intentional or unintentional) wrongs we did. I love the track, purely because it hits you straight in the head and sometimes, that's all you need to be set back right.

Fashion funda

I am no fashionista but I feel that fashion is a wonderful art for—a way for all of us to express who we are and what we feel. It allows us to stand out. I don't think there is anything called a fashion faux pas. We laugh at people when they don't wear the right thing as it doesn't appeal to our taste. That's wrong. You have the right to wear what you want. It's okay if you want to have purple hair or combat boots. Do it. Be free. Be you!

Signature style

I may have to wear leopard print pants in films but that's not something you'd find me in off the sets. I wear what makes me feel comfortable—boots, denims and t-shirts. And I have a penchant for black colour.

Tomboy at heart

High heels look sexy but they hurt like hell. I like the edgy, street look. I would always prefer denims and boots to short dresses. I am a tomboy at heart.

Fashion icons

I like Sonam Kapoor's and Kalki Koelchin's fashion sense. Kalki's experiments with different things appeal a lot to me.

No offence please

I don't mean any offence to the fashion conscious but I really don't care what anyone wears. Honestly, I mostly read about psychology and nutrition and healthcare, much more than I would ever read fashion magazines or spend time following trends.

Prachi turns item girl

Prachi Desai will make a glamorous guest appearance in Balaji and Mohit Suri's keenly awaited Ek Villain. Prachi will feature in the Awari track, which will be shot in Mumbai later this week, with a surprise actor whose identity is being kept under wraps.

The track has been composed and rendered by the Pakistani band, Soch, who make their Bollywood debut with Ek Villain. In the past, Suri had introduced the likes of Atif Aslam and Mustafa Zahid from Lahore, to the world of Bollywood.

During a recent visit to the Balaji office, Mohit bumped into Prachi, who expressed a keen desire to work with him.

A source said, "Prachi has been a huge fan of Mohit's hits and was overwhelmed when he instantly asked her to make an appearance in a track. Music has always been a major highlight of his films."

Awari is not a quintessential item number, as Mohit does not subscribe to that philosophy. Mohit was not keen to go the typical item girl path and wanted a tender, vulnerable face with strong acting abilities, and Prachi fit the bill.

The rock-style bar track laden with emotion, is, in fact, organic to a pivotal sequence in the film's second half. Prachi fell in love with the track on first hearing and the plan is to style her in a never-seen-before avatar.

Going by Jacqueline and Shraddha's makeovers in his recent films, Mohit sure has a good eye for women! And Prachi is the next!

Zoya sets sail!

Zoya Akhtar's film went on floors last weekend. She has set sail with the cast and crew of Dil Dhadakne Do. On board the liner, which has set off from Barcelona are Ranveer Singh, Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra and Shefali Shah.

The crew will tour some of the most beautiful cities in the world, including Barcelona, Florence, Rome and Naples.

Zoya and Ritesh have come up with an interesting idea to get the stars behind the camera. The duo has flagged a contest amongst the cast where each of them will be appointed official photographer for a week.

They will be capturing locations also all the behind the scene moments.

Once the shoot gets over, they will announce a winner. The captured pictures will also be part of the marketing of the film. It will be turned into a kind of digital travelogue. Ritesh Sidhwani says, "It is going to be a fun activity. We have allotted weeks to each one of them and worked out a plan.”

Actress Parineeti Chopra, who has been shooting for her upcoming film Kill Dil in Bali, is currently on a bed rest. 'Sick and in bed :( yeh toh hona hi tha,' Chopra updated. Meanwhile, the 25-year-old actress recently finished shooting for some underwater sequences.

'And finally my 1st dive in the open sea!! What a surreal experience. As rightly said in ZNMD," diving is like meditation". Now I understand!! The underwater world is soo beautiful, calm and mesmerising. Saw things that I otherwise never would in my lifetime. No words :)' she added.

Secret romance
Bollywood stars are quite secretive about their love life in general. They may have a no-comments stand and usually get linked with their co-stars but many of them have love interests outside of the industry. Take a look

Shahid Kapoor

He is turning out to be quite the player and keeps us guessing on his relationship status! He has been spotted lately with Sonakshi Sinha, Jacqueline Fernandez and his close friend Meenal. One rumour says that he likes Shraddha Kapoor and another rumour has it that he is dating Meenal. Let's see where this goes. He is not saying anything about his love life.

Varun Dhawan

He is the cute hottie of the moment and has been linked with Alia Bhatt. The truth is that he is going steady with his childhood sweetheart Natasha Dalal and they even go out for screenings together.

Saqib Saleem

Unlike his hot sister Huma Qureshi, Saqib has not been linked with any of his co-stars. He is dating a girl from outside the film industry and will marry her once he lands a blockbuster film.

Tiger Shroff

He has clearly avoided link-ups with his co-star Kriti Sanon. He is dating a foreigner and is constantly glued to his phone to keep her updated on his movie and more.

Alia Bhatt

She may have been linked with Varun Dhawan and openly talks about her crush on Ranbir Kapoor but she is secretly dating her high-school love Ali Dadarkar and is mum about it!

No negative shades

DIFFERENT TAKE: Ankita Sharma
DIFFERENT TAKE: Ankita Sharma

She has played many positive roles in serials, but Ankita Sharma seems to have come on her own in a negative role in Rangrasiya. She plays the lovely Laila, who wants to win Rudra at any cost. She talks about it and much more.

Your role Laila has garnered popularity. Wasn't it planned as a cameo?

No. It was a proper role, but initially we kept it as a regular character. Later it was developed into a negative lead. That kept the audiences mystified as well.

Are you enjoying this negative character more than the positive one you played in Amrit Manthan?

Yes. TV makes heroines cry a lot and I was tired of that. Moreover, there is much more scope for performance in a negative role than a positive one. I am enjoying myself.

How are your co-stars Ashish Sharma and Sanaya Irani?

Both are very nice. I have worked with Ashish in a period film Alhaubal earlier, so I knew him but I have become friends with Sanaya too. We all chat a lot in our breaks.

What's the one thing you'd like to change about the television industry?

If I had to change I would like to change the trend of slotting actors. Ones who do positive don't get negative roles and vice versa. Such restrictions don't let actors become performers. And I would also like to decrease the working hours from twelve to eight hours.

Are you looking at films next?

I don't plan, as God plans for me. I look at good opportunities and take them up. If I get a good offer from films tomorrow, I will surely take it up. — HRM
