A heart’s calling
Arfi Lamba, who began his career with Slumdog Millionaire, is now shifting to commercial cinema with Fugly
Amarjot Kaur

Role call: Arfi Lamba
Role call: Arfi Lamba

Born and brought up in Moga, Arfi Lamba was pretty much like every other small town lad enamoured by Bollywood; he confesses that he would often trade his studies for a Madhuri Dixit movie! But he didn't quite start his Bollywood career with commercial cinema.

"Although I was heavily passionate about Bollywood and films, I was still juggling between my dreams and reality, which like every engineering student was to get a fancy job and start working," says Arfi, who studied engineering from Thapar University. It was only after he started working as an engineer that he realised what he truly wanted. In 2007, Arfi waved goodbye to the only stable job that he had as an engineer in Delhi and moved to Mumbai. "Of course my parents were not happy with my decision, but my heart was into acting," he says. Arfi, coaxed by friends, got a photo shoot done, courtesy which he landed a small role in the film Slumdog Millionaire.

"That's where it all began; I had just moved to Mumbai in 2008 when Navleen Tandon, who was then the casting director of the film, short-listed me for a small role," he says. This was only the beginning, for later he went to Cannes to represent his film, where he met Katharina Suckle, with whom he started a production company, Bombay Berlin Film Production (BBFP). "After playing the role of Chandan's alter ego in the film Prague, a movie by Ashish R Shukla and produced by Rohit Khaitan, I was tempted to do meaningful commercial film," shares Arfi.

Kabir Sadanand and Arfi had been friends for long, but not worked together till finally Kabir offered him the role of Aditya in Fugly. "I play the role of Aditya, who is one of the four friends in the film. I was tempted by the graph of the film, the role and the story plot. Also, though the film is a commercial one, it is meaningful cinema, without attempting to be preachy at all," says Arfi, revealing the reasons for choosing the film.

While talking about his future projects, Arfi shares that he will soon be producing a film titled Loev under his production banner and is also gearing up for the film, The Pollutant, which has been in the pipeline for long.

Notes to remember
Moving up the ladder from reality shows, singer Palak Muchhal made it big with the hit single Chahun Main Ya Na. She has also sung a duet with Yo Yo Honey Singh…
Manpriya Singh

Sing along: Palak Muchhal
Sing along: Palak Muchhal

She sent the entire nation on a Karaoke exercise with the hit single Chahun Main Ya Na — the song that was on repeat mode all through last year, as much for its music as for its croon-worthy element. After the hit musical Aashiqui 2, singer Palak Muchhal put her career graph on an upward spiral and couldn't have asked for more. Nor did she have to!

"That song was a game-changer for me. After that track I have already recorded as many as 128 songs that will hit the market as the films release," she revisits the satisfying journey that Bollywood has been so far and still continues to be. And then there is the song Ice-Cream with Honey Song, "This song is my first association with Honey Singh; my first duet with him. I am happy and excited. I have worked with him on the song Photocopy in the past, so there was this level of comfort."

Playback singing in cover songs usually doesn't happen without a long struggle, which begins with reality shows. "I come from a Marwari family, which has had absolutely no connection with music. However, I have had personal interest in music since childhood and once sang at a family function when I was as young as two-and-a-half-years old." She adds, "My mother had me enrolled for lessons in classical music. I learnt Urdu, voice culture and everything else possible."

"When I was 14, my family moved to Mumbai and the first thing I wanted to do was meet Salman Khan." She adds, "I got introduced to him through a director. He was encouraging and got me to sing a few lines." His show Dus Ka Dum followed. "He made me sing in as many as 17 languages," shares the 22-year-old. "Lapata was my first big song. After the recording, he told me that the song was being used in his upcoming film Ek Tha Tiger. I almost did not take him seriously because it was too good to be true." Only it was!

She attributes the success as much to dedication as to the right inspiration. "I have always been an ardent Lata Mangeshkar fan. I also admire Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan." Coming up is Fugly and, "There's also this film Traffic, then a Vir Das film titled Ishqeria and lots more."

Ludhiana is quickly turning into a foodie's paradise and the many bakeries that have opened in the city during the recent past have sure added more to the plate! And what's more, as many as four more bakeries are coming up soon. Says Rajiv Jain from Baker's Lounge, "The tastes of people are definitely changing. New bakeries that are opening up in the city are a testimony to this trend. People here have a sweet tooth, no doubt, but the preference is now for bakery products ."

A number of new innovations are making the bakery products even more alluring for the customers. A recently opened bakery called Bake House offers German products, including 'Danishes', which have soft creamy layers beneath the coated crust. "We are making cinnamon rolls and pita breads as well. The preference of people is just changing," says Kunal Arora from Bake House.

He adds, "In the rapidly changing lifestyles of today, inclination for different kinds of breads has increased. These offer a great alternative for a quick breakfast and snacks. None of the celebrations are complete without cakes, so the appetite for bakery products is only going to increase with time," Be it the chocorolls, almond-rocks or puddings - people now have a great variety to choose from.

The relatively new bakeries here, including Nik Bakers, offer a huge variety of delectable products to choose from. Even as the new bakeries are opening up, the older ones are also sprucing up their menus to keep up with times," says Vanya, a foodie. "The great thing about bakeries is that most of them are innovating and adding new things to their menus," says Aditya, another Ludhiana resident.

Summer Fashion Yatra will showcase the creations of 35 odd designers from the region
Ashima Batish

Delhi might be the fashion capital of the country but it's quite a task to travel 240 km every time you want something special, something customised and designer. So you turn to local designers, sift through their designs, check out their work, fabric, cut and fit. The reason you can never undermine the importance of local designers and local labels is at least they are at your beck and call unlike the big, busy names of Delhi designer circle.

"And we too make everything, from floor length anarkalis, Pakistani suits to shraras to lehengas…" says Nidhi Jain of Nidhi Studios, who is a pass out of NIFT, Delhi.

She is all set to present her creations at Summer Fashion Yatra, an exhibition that will have 35 other designers, most of them from the region, a couple of them from Delhi and even Pakistan.

Nidhi closely follows the two major fashion weeks of India, doesn't replicate designs as such but interpret them in her own unique way. "I started designing clothes for friends, which inspired me to begin on a professional note, and here I am."

As a prelude to her collection, she gets her two creations, a saree done in net and lycra. The pink embroidery and cut work on the golden background makes for a fresh combination, the cut work is neat and not over the top. But the yellow anarkali gown or anarkali suit (it's difficult to decipher the design) is stale, something that has been so much done to death that even the incarnation looks haggard. Even the embroidery fails to make any amends.

Another Panchkula-based designer to put up a stall at the exhibition is Shikha Monga. As expected, she uses all kinds of fabrics, cotton, georgette, chiffon and organza. She promises fresh designs in the form of peplum suits, a fusion concept not easy to imagine. She models for her own designs, as she is wearing an off-white organza gown with red dori work. The work is intricate, neat and worth a mention, and only if the choice of fabric was wise, only if the stiff organza was replaced by a softer version of it, which is more suited for the summer, it would have made many a fashion follower's head turn. Karishma Ahuja has named her label Kimz. She has used pastel shades. "Also, I have done a lot of Bollywood designs." Yet, she calls her collection exclusive, owing to the better quality of fabrics she uses. The two-day exhibition will begin from May 10 at Bella Vista.

Anmol Preet He is destiny's child. While doing his MBA, Anmol Preet wouldn't have ever thought that he would be sitting in a music studio and recording his tracks. And well it didn't happen, while Anmol flew along the course that life charted for him.

With a pleasant smile, mischievous eyes, and a sweet voice, Anmol can come up with a prank just when you start relaxing in his company. His track Kalol 2012 received an unexpectedly overwhelming response from the industry as well as from the audience. Currently, his track Saah is making rounds everywhere. The singer opens his heart, which not everyone is allowed a peek into.

I am a singer

I did my MBA, but all I wanted to do was to sing. I did get a lot of strange reactions from the near and dear ones when I told them what I wanted to do. My family supported me throughout in this decision and I am here because of them.

Inspiration comes calling

I write most of my tracks, which are inspired by things, people and incidents around. I don't have to find a quiet corner to write a song, I can do that walking or sitting anywhere. My track Kalol is something every youngster can relate to.

Make some noise

I love performing live; you can also say this is something that gives me immense satisfaction and pride. When I hear people calling out my name and requesting me to sing my tracks again and again, I am filled with pride. I haven't got over the live show that I did in Ladwa, Haryana in 2013. A huge crowd asked me to sing each and every track on a repeat mode.

Let's jam in

I admire both Yo Yo Honey Singh and Diljit Dosanjh. I would love to collaborate with them some day.

Best compliment….

A girl came up to me once and said 'you look great what special diet do you take.'

Fit n fine

Fitness is an integral part of my schedule. Singing is a kind of an exercise as well that stretches the vocal chords and puts a lot of pressure on all the muscles. I hit the gym everyday.

No reservations

I eat everything I can lay my hands on except for non-vegetarian. I don't have any reservations about what not to eat for my throat.

That changed it all

When my track Kalol came out, it was an instant hit. People started rhyming Anmol Kalol. It changed everything for me. It gave me recognition.

Marooned on an island

Give me my mobile, I love to play games, something to eat and a pen and paper.

On my hit list

Peed tere jaan di by Gurdas Maan is my all time favourite and will always be.

Filmi keeda

As of now I am only concentrating on my track. I don't want to do any films as of now. Let's see what happens after a while.

CELEB POINT
Moments of glory
Divya Dutta

Yes, I've come back with the coveted award. The IIFA trophy is mine and what better way than to get it in front of Milkha ji himself! The day I reached Tampa Bay with my brother, we missed the evening events as we were terribly jet lagged. At breakfast the next day, I met up my entire clan.

We sat with Shabanaji and Javed saab for breakfast. What a lovely gesture from Shabanaji to specially make nice Indian tea for me as their tea was very light. I love this couple and have immense respect for them. I bumped into another favourite—Dolly Ahluwalia and her gracious husband.

We all spent the afternoon outdoors and what a wonderful time we had splashing water, singing songs and discussing poetry along with other friends who accompanied us. The evening was busy with technical awards and I was so proud that Bhaag Milkha Bhaag got nine awards that evening. I gave away an award too. The rest of the evening was spent with Rakeysh Ompraksh Mehra, Shankar Ehsan Loy and the MBM crew.

The next day was the day of the main awards. Yes, I was nervous. Even if have won earlier, there's always that heart beat running faster when you are nominated! But that afternoon was special as we all had a talk session with none other than Kevin Spacey! Priyanka Chopra was beautifully mediating the talk.

Palpitations had started as the time was coming close for the awards. I got ready in my Neeta Lulla outfit. I held my bro's hand tight and walked the red carpet. Something magical happened there! Thousands of people waiting to greet the stars! I thought it was the usual craze, but for the first time as I walked, I realised it was something much more than that. That warmth, that love from the crowd, shouting my name wanting to hold my hand just once, some even crying in excitement, shook me. It was a divine feeling to be loved like that! I could have cried too in sheer joy! This love was the biggest trophy in itself. But yes, I was still tense. In front of the man whom the film was based, I really wanted to hold the trophy and thank him for what this role had brought my way. I was sitting with Tushar Kapur and Nawazuddin Siddique. Tushar was called back stage. It was time to announce my category. Farhan Akhtar was hosting the show along with Shahid Kapoor. As Tushar and Ritesh Deshmukh opened the envelope, I felt my heart sink! And Tushar said, "You thought I was leaving? I am here and with great pride to announce that the award goes to you DD!"

And that tingling feeling where you are extremely happy and you want to cry because you are so relieved. Among the thunderous applause, I walked up, finding it tough to climb the steps in my gown. Farhan came to my rescue and in his replication from our famous scene offered his blazer in jest! That was the moment I was waiting for. That trophy received in the presence of Milkha ji and my director Rakeysh, the words just flew from the heart and the applause showed the audience related to how I felt! That trophy was precious and that love I got, I've brought it all back in my heart. Yes, I am back a happy and content woman.

Pot it well
Satish Narula

We have been talking about watering needs of plants. This is one subject on which one could go on writing and talking about, especially during the summer. The watering requirements of plants are different, whether these are fruit trees, vegetables, climbers; in the soil or in pots.

Plants in pots need special treatment. The amount of water retained in pots is limited. The space further reduces if the pots are old and the plant roots have already filled the space. The concrete of pots also get heated leading to moisture loss. The plants are very sensitive and wilt in no time. There is need to give special attention to pots and baskets.

There is an advantage with pots as these can be shifted to shade. But when there is no provision of shade other measures have to be taken. The pot surface could be mulched, that is, provided with some kind of cover with materials like moss grass, paper shreds, wood shavings etc. Covering with stones or chips could however, harm at times as they get heated and may burn superficial and thread like roots. This is more so in case of begonias.

It is important to understand the watering needs of different kind of plants. Keeping pots in shade and that too in groups considerably reduces the water loss and watering needs. Keeping a pot of water in between also reduces the need as it increases humidity. The priorities could also be fixed depending upon the species. There is little need of water in pots having plants of Ficus species, like rubber plants, Ficus benjamina, Ficus panda, Ficus infectoria etc. But this does not mean that the same principle holds good for bonsai plants of Ficus species. In fact, the bonsai plants need watering at least twice a day and if there is overhead sprinkling it is still better.

The plants like palms also need lesser amount of water but remember any stress at any stage may cause irreparable setback and it is difficult for palm to revive once it is subjected to water stress. Plants like aphelandra need watering every day. The stress in this plant is seen as wilting of leaves even in a day. The begonias with very thin hair like leaves need almost continuous moistening of soil. Asparagus has needle like leaves and loss of water in minimal. The watering of this plant may be skipped even for two to three days at a stretch. Dieffenbachia and dracaena also can withstand stress for some time. Watering method is also important. When we water pots, the water seems to fill the pot immediately with even a small application giving an impression that the pots have been watered appropriately.

Master Chef
Melon medley
Kandla Nijhowne

Melon, our good old kharbuja, often takes a back seat to mango, the king of fruits. It's a pity, for a melon, with its delicate flavour, teamed with a unique fragrance is truly a delicious fruit. My rule of thumb is, "If it's sweet, then tuck in regardless! And if not, then turn it into a lovely salad with the right flavouring and simple dressing!" The best part? This salad has no oil! Melons go really well with the sharp heat of fresh ginger which counters its inherent sweetness. A scattering of mint leaves and a squirt of lemon juice completes the picture...I mean salad!

Melon, mint & ginger zing salad

Ingredients

  • 2½ assorted coloured melons
  • 2-2½ tbsp torn mint leaves
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • Sea salt or regular salt to taste
  • Grated fresh ginger or juice to taste

Method

  • In a small cup, blend the salt, honey and mint together.
  • Grate ½ a tsp of lemon zest from the lemon, then juice both the lemons.
  • Add the zest and most of the juice into the cup.
  • Ina large bowl, peel, de seed and chop the melons. You could go all the way and scoop out melon balls too!
  • Add the honey-lime mixture and toss to coat evenly.
  • Check if you need more lemon or sweetening.
  • Chill the salad in the refrigerator until serving.

Note: You can replace mint with fresh dhaniya, specially the crunchy stems if you don't care for mint.

If you don't have honey, then shakkar is also an acceptable substitute.

Sonam’s Cannes outing

The Cannes Film Festival is like a three-day glamourous holiday for Sonam Kapoor who walks the red carpet over there as an L'Oreal ambassador. She talks about the experience, make-up, fashion, and more.

Holiday

Cannes Film Festival is like a three-day holiday for me. It's about representing my country and having fun. Being glamorous and having champagne. Like every year, I'm really looking forward to it.

Reality check

It's so exciting to meet everybody there. When you meet beautiful models and international stars, you realise you're living in a bubble. It's a humbling experience. The world is so big and it reminds you to have more humility and modesty.

Make-up plans

This year my make-up will be shiny, very golden and bronze. I'm trying to stay away from the white-skin look. Indians like to define their eyes so my team has included that in the look too. And we'll definitely focus on the lip colour.

I'm really excited about the L'Or Lumiere collection as it embodies two of my favourite make-up trends--neo gold and bright. I'm quite excited to showcase these trends on a global platform.

Surprise element

Like every year, I'll be experimenting with my look this year too. And it's going to be a surprise. It doesn't matter whether it's the red carpet in India or Cannes, there will be an Indian element to whatever I'm going to wear.

For instance, last year I wore Anamika Khanna's outfit. She is a Marwadi (Rajasthani) designer. I wore a saree and a nose ring. That look was really appreciated. So, this year too I'll try and come up with interesting Indian elements. My mom has beautiful jewellery and I'd like to wear something from her collection if it goes with my outfit.

Indian trends

Every year I try to spot a fashion trend which is relevant to India. So, even if the rest of people abroad are following the worldwide trend on the red carpet, I try to follow the Indian trend, which people here will be able to carry off. Hence, L'Oreal Paris is trying hard to create trends here before going to Cannes. We're trying to do something new and bring a change.

The Indian media seems to enjoy covering my appearances at the festival. I don't know how much value I add to the festival, but the media has always had faith in me. They've been as enthusiastic about representing India on a global platform as I've been. I don't want to let them down.

Figuring it out

Age defying: Madhuri Dixit
Age defying: Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri Dixit is known for her passion for dance. She is nearly 50 but looks incredibly fit and gorgeous and makes many hearts flutter. The mother of two talks about fitness and dancing.

Fit for life

I'm health conscious; you can call me a fitness freak. During a film's promotion we begin our work early in the morning and by the time we go back home, we are exhausted. We don't even get to work out during these times. But we do some tricks to compensate. For example when I can't work out, I get strict about my diet. I keep a close watch on my calorie intake. For example, if one usually eats 1200 or 2000 calories, then I go slow during those days. I don't sponge off the full plate; I leave myself somewhat hungry. Then, when I get back to working out I go easy on my diet.

Dancing away to glory

Earlier, I was always dancing because I had numerous dance numbers in films. So I never consciously had to work out. But now I don't do so many films. So fitness has become a big issue. You step out of your home, sit in a car and reach your work place, where again you sit through the day. Then you come back home and sit in front of the TV. So you are sitting most of the time. That's why a strict fitness protocol is a must these days.

Rule book

My favourite fitness discipline is dance and then comes cardio. I do cardio and upper and lower body exercises on alternate days. You need to do cardio to burn calories. But you also need to develop your muscles and that's why you need to do weights. Your body shouldn't get accustomed to a certain type of exercise; you need to change the routine. In between you should take heavier dumbbells and then get back to your regular ones. That way your muscles get a kick. When you exercise, you burn calories. But it doesn't mean that you can eat sugar or sweets. I had to take great care of my diet and exercise during pregnancy because there's no other option to stay fit.
