Abohar
Jawan dies during exercise:
Lance Naik Paramjit Singh, who suffered severe chest pain during Army exercise "Sarvada Vijay" in the deserts of Rajasthan, died at the Community Health Centre in Rawatsar last evening. This is the third such death during the operations. The body would be taken to his native place in Hoshiarpur district, sources said.

Man killed in accident: Darshan Singh of Tahliwala Jattan village in Balluana segment of Abohar sub-division was killed after an unidentified vehicle reportedly hit the motorcycle he was driving outside Dangarkhera village on the Abohar-Fazilka road on Wednesday.

Opium seized: The CIA staff in Abohar seized 4 kg opium from an abandoned bag. The bag was found during checking at the general bus stand here. The bag also contained some clothes.

Six new APROs:
The PR Department has appointed Megha Mann, Harmeet Singh, Puneet Pal Singh, Gagneet Singh Aujla, Balwinder and Bhupesh Chatha as Assistant PROs. They had approached the High Court, opposing additional marks awarded to candidates from rural areas.

Dhuri Bar elects office-bearers:
Amanjit Singh Bhasaur has been elected president of the Bar Association, Dhuri. The other office-bearers are Parminder Pal Sharma (vice-president), Romar Kapoor (secretary), Soni Garg (joint secretary) and Mandeep Sharma (cashier).

College gets R
s 1.85-cr grant: The UGC has granted approval to Mata Gujri College here to start Bachelor of Vocation (Retail Management) and Bachelor of Vocation (Software Development). It has awarded grant worth Rs 1.85 crore for the purpose.

Fazilka
Two booked for rape:
Two persons have been booked on the charge of raping a married woman, after giving her an intoxicant-laced drink in Jalalabad town of Fazilka district. The accused are Amrik Singh of Jandwala village, who is known to the woman’s family, and Gurpreet Singh.

Ferozepur
2 booked for FB comments:
The police have registered a case against two persons for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of a sect by posting "derogatory" comments on a social networking site. Harjit Singh, a follower of Dera Sacha Sauda, alleged that some persons had posted objectionable comments against the dera head on Facebook. Those booked are Nihaal Singh Maan and Gursharan Kaur Khalsa. The police said further investigation was on.

Phagwara
One arrested with 5 gm heroin:
The police have arrested a drug peddler identified as Lakhbir Singh of Rampura locality of the town last night and recovered 30 gm of intoxicant powder and 5 gm of heroin from his possession. The culprit was arrested at a barrier set up by the police.

Ropar
Youth feared drowned:
A youth is feared to have drowned in the Bhakhra canal here on Tuesday. The police said Gurminder Singh (18) and Sukhdev (20) were going on a motorcycle when they lost control over the vehicle and fell into the canal. While passersby rescued Sukhdev, Gurminder could not be saved, the police said.

Sangrur
Ramdev’s effigy burnt:
Activists of the Block Safai Mazdoor Union, Sangrur, on Tuesday burnt an effigy of yoga guru Baba Ramdev at the traffic light chowk, near the main bus stand here. They raised slogans against Ramdev and demanded his arrest. Union chairman Bal Kishan Chauhan said Baba Ramdev had insulted the Dalits.

Tarn Taran
2 held in rape case:
Armyman Yadwinder Singh and Chhallo, both residents of Gill Waraich village, were arrested in a rape case on Tuesday. The victim of the same village alleged that Chhallo took her to her home on the pretext of some work. When she went there, Singh raped her, the victim alleged.

Cop attacked, 2 booked: Two persons have been booked for allegedly attacking a policeman on duty. The accused, Gurinderjit Singh of Tharu village and Sehajbir Singh of Kakka Kandiala village, attacked Nirmal Singh, who was on duty at the Chabal-Amritsar bypass. The accused were on their motorcycle when the policeman signalled them to stop, which reportedly  angered the duo.

Dehradun
Illicit liquor seized from Doon:
The police yesterday raided a house of at Shiwalik Colony and seized 96 bottles of country-made liquor. However, the owner of the house, Kuldeep, managed to escape. Meanwhile, the Kotwali police raided Mahendra Singh's house at Madrasi colony in Rest Camp and seized 192 bottles of illicit liquor. The liquor was meant to be distributed among the locals.
