Cop dies in road accident
Kharar, April 30 The victim has been identified as Raja Singh, a resident of Morinda. He was returning home on his Activa scooter after performing his duty when a car hit his vehicle. The victim’s son, Gurdip Singh, and his cousin Mohinder Singh were also going along with his father on a separate motorcycle at the time of the incident. Gurdip Singh said the driver of the car fled from the spot after hitting the scooter. He could not note down the registration number of the vehicle. The victim was shifted to the Civil Hospital, Kharar, where doctors declared him brought dead. The police have registered a case against the unidentified driver of the car at the Kharar police station (Sadar). — TNS |
Purse snatched
Chandigarh, April 30 Lakhwinder Kaur, wife of constable Ranjit Singh, told the local police that a motorcyclist snatched away her purse, containing Rs 1,500 and a mobile phone. The victim had gone to a temple near her residence in Sector 20. Lakhwidner said as she was on her way back home, an unknown person on a black-colour motorcycle came and snatched away her purse.Lakhwinder Kaur, noted down the registration number of the vehicle and later on informed the police. The accused was arrested on the basis of the registration number. He was identified as Aashish Chauhan, a resident of Zirakpur, and the snatched purse was also recovered from his possession. He was remanded to one-day police custody. |

Chandigarh, April 30 The tournament was organised by the Chandigarh Cricket Association, affiliated with the Haryana Cricket Association, here. An overall performance by the Panchkula District Cricket Association (PDCA) side led them to register 34-run victory over the Chandigarh Cricket Association, affiliated to the Haryana Cricket Association. Starting their day, the PDCA team posted a total of 142 runs before getting all out in 38.1 overs. Mohit (33 off 55), Vikas (25 off 20) and Shivam (20 off 25) scored their respective shares for the winning side. For bowling side, Manan Chadha, Triaksh Bali and Rahul acclaimed two wickets each. Chasing a low total, the Chandigarh Cricket Association failed to keep up the momentum and fumbled on 108 runs in 36.1 overs. Efforts of Ayush Gautam (36 off 68) and Vivek (13 off 37) went in vain. For Panchkula side, Mandeep remained the pick of the day by claiming 4 for 11, while Vikas supported him by claiming 4 for 12. |
Sports welfare club holds inter-state football tourney
Chandigarh, April 30 In a league-cum-knockout-basis tournament, the Chandigarh team won the final by defeating Delhi (3-1). Six teams from the region took part in the tournament. The club will also organise various tournaments on a league-cum-knockout basis in different parts of the region. The top performers will be shortlisted to participate in a national camp in Kolkata. — TNS |
City boxers to attend national coaching camp
Chandigarh, April 30 Three sub-junior boxers - Rahul (weight category C-6), Karambir Bharti (weight category C-7) and Ashish (weight category B-15) - of PML SD Public School, Sector 32, have been selected on the basis of their performance in the last national boxing championship of the sub-junior category. Meanwhile, in the upcoming trails to select the Indian men and women boxing team, four local boxers - three men and one woman - will represent the city. In the men’s category, Anand (49kg), Neeraj (60 kg) and Kailash Gill (75 Kg) will appear for the trails scheduled to be held at the NIS, Patiala, from May 9 to 12. In the women’s category, Neets (48kg) will appear for the trails to be held at the IG Stadium, New Delhi, from May 6 to 7. All boxers are selected to appear for the trails on the basis of their last year’s performance. |
Dynamite Club emerge victorious
Chandigarh, April 30 The championship was held at KB DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 7, here today. The tournament was conducted under the aegis of the Netball Association of Chandigarh (regd), affiliated to the Netball Federation of India. In the final of the boys’ (U-14), Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, defeated Moti Ram Arya School, Sector 27, (18-14). In the hard-line match, Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, superseded Golden Club (12-10). In the final of the girls’ (U-14), the team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 28, claimed the title after defeating Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, (17-16). Moti Ram Arya School, Sector 27, secured third position after defeating Sun Shine Club (13-8). Dynamite Club lifted the trophy in the girls’ (U-19) category after defeating Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, (17-14). Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, managed to secure third position after defeating host KB DAV School (14-10). In the last final of the day, Spartan Twelve Club won in the boys’ (U-19) category. The club defeated Coaching Centre, Moti Ram Arya School, Sector 27 (22-19). The team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Khuda Ali Sher, (10-5) to attain third place in the championship. |
