Strong words, stronger spirit

Singer-actor Nishawn Bhullar’s Suhe Phull is going to the Punjabi International Film Festival, Toronto. He has made a stepping stone of every obstacle that has come in his path

Sometimes in the middle of the night when sleep ceases to honour him, he likes to take the road that takes him to his village in Hanumangarh, Ramsara Narayan, Rajasthan, where he grew up. A place that still smells of his childhood marred with struggles, that reminds him of the sacrifices his parents made — a place that inspired him to move out and a place that he would love to return to every now and then.

Punjabi actor Nishawn Bhullar credits his parents for where he is today and for his strong morals that has eventually paid him in his career. After working in the national award winning Punjabi film Nabar, now the singer-actor is ready to showcase his next film Suhe Phull, inspired by Balwant Gargi's story. The film opens at the Punjabi International Film Festival, Toronto and will also be going to the Southeast Asian Festival. In addition, the film will be making rounds of all film festivals in the country — an uncommon feat for a Punjabi film.

Suhe Phull, a concept by Nishawn Bhullar and Upinder Randhawa, has been produced by Jaspinder Randhawa of Freedom Films Pvt Ltd. This is a film that is shot in a span of 20 days. Nishawn, somehow, can now see clearly where his heart lies. We see it somehow in the parallel Punjabi cinema. "There isn't a well-etched parallel cinema in Punjab. As for me I am open to all kinds of films, whether they are commercial or art movies, but it is a must that it should have a strong subject," says Nishawn, who rose to fame with his track Tere Photo Bhagat Singh.

This singer is in no hurry to make the best of time. In fact, he has said 'no'to many projects that would have given him commercial success. "If I sing I do it with dedication and if I act it is with equal dedication. I understand the value of commercial success, but this should not come at the cost of a lousy role. I would rather wait for the right film."

So, after Nabar, Nishawn did wait for the right film. Along with friends, I would sit over various stories that could be converted into a film. "Upinder, Chander Kamboj, screenplay and dialogue writer, and Inderjeet Bansal, director of photography, came to the consensus that they would work on a Balwant Gargi story," shares the actor who isolated himself to prepare for the role.

"I knew it was a tough role, something I haven't attempted before. I decided I had to work for it. I said bye to parties, friends; almost everything. I locked myself in a room and would talk to myself for hours," says Nishawn, who gets emotional talking about it. "And you don't expect this from a Punjabi film actor," he laughs on what we were probably thinking!

With most Punjabi films following the same formula, Nishawn doesn't believe in being different for the sake of it. "I don't do such films because they look and sound different. I do films because of their strong concept." What about finances? "Thanks to a few good people like Jaspinder Randhawa, we can manage to make such films. Just because it is an art film, we haven't left any stone unturned to take it to the public. We are promoting it like any other commercial film," adds Bhullar. Would the next film be on similar lines, we wonder. "I haven't slept for days, I find most of the answers in my dreams," he laughs. Well, good night then!

Bhangra blast
Manpriya Singh

The foot-tapping Punjabi dance form Bhangra has over the years delighted one and all. Various permutations and combinations have now made it even more effervescent

The likes of Rishi Rich, Bally Sagoo and Punjabi MC literally pulled Bhangra from the cultural shows and onto the dance floor of Southall clubs. Bohemia, the first-ever Punjabi rapper, made us believe that it was possible to rap in the language and just as beautifully as brashfully! Yo Yo Honey Singh famously spoke of how it was even possible to pao bhangra on Angrezi beat. The spirit of the dhol lends itself effortlessly well to the format of the West.

The day of Baisakhi calls for a heartfelt thanksgiving for a bountiful crop, the sunny days ahead and celebration with good old dhol beats as well as some Bhangra steps. "Bhangra music and even as a dance form, it offers a lot of variety. Even within Bhangra there are as many as over 20 dance forms," city-based choreographer Jasmeet K Shan speaks of the Bhangra-aerobics class introduced at her fitness studio. "When we introduced it three years go, a lot of women were apprehensive of the idea. Now everybody loves it. In the Bhangra cardio class we use Bhangra folk movements incorporated with recorded music or dhol beats." She adds, "I recall having heard Honey Singh's Angrezi beat while travelling in an auto in Mysore. When I quizzed further, he pulls out a CD, which played the song Waaris Shah by Gurdas Maan."

Blame it on the artists or the art form itself; Bhangra has charted a long and experimental journey. "I have fused Bhangra with African dance form and it was really appreciated," shares choreographer Puneet Jewandah from The Engine Room. "Another popular amalgamation I can think of is The Bhangra and Bollywood and we all know the results…we started with Bhangra session only last month and the response has been overwhelming. One-hour session of Bhangra burns as many as 600 to 700 calories."

She adds, "Before this, Bhangra dances were restricted to cultural activities and shows. Part of the image makeover can be attributed to the huge Bhangra competitions and the craze for it in the UK." Well, the place where they improvised and redefined the genre.

"It has got a thump to it that is infectious. So much so that no one can resist tapping to the beats," shares the Jalandhar-based choreographer Gaggun Bedi, who recently featured among the top choreographers of India in author Anna Morcom's book, Illicit Worlds of Indian Dance. He adds, "In my studio, we have incorporated Bhangra even in Salsa classes. It also lends itself really well to Cuban music." The amalgamation and the possibilities with the dance forms are endless and inspiring.

Experimentation mode

The overhaul in Bhangra music can be completely credited to the second generation Punjabi diaspora that experimented with the genre. The British Asians who combined Punjabi lyrics with electronica and everything else that the West had to offer. Malkit Singh, Punjabi By Nature, Juggy D and the like go down the hall of fame. Bally Sagoo, Indian music producer, can be credited with several hits and introducing the reggae and bhangra trend known as bhangramuffin.

Then there's Bohemia. The famous rapper who gave us hits like Vich Pardesan De, Kali Denali and Sahara, however, never set out to rap. "It was a result of a lot of things that all fell into place together. I never set out to rap. At the time, in San Francisco, I happened to be in the vicinity of a lot of rappers…I started really young and at that age you want to express yourself."

He adds, "I've till date never hired a publicist or anybody and suddenly after Kali Denali, I had BBC calling up and getting curious about the thing called Punjabi rap." Well, what he started is a genre in itself now. "In The States, you can see in the middle of a baseball game, they have breaks where suddenly you'll see a Bhangra troupe performing in the stadium…it is really big and invites a lot of awe from the Americans or Europeans.

Doc Talk
A reason to smile
Dr Vikas Sharma

The nasolabial folds, commonly known as "smile lines" or "laugh lines" are the two skin folds that run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth. These folds become a cosmetic problem when they get deep and more pronounced. Some have associated darkness of skin colour along these lines making them look odd. For most, such deep smile lines are nothing to smile about. These lines or creases tend to get deeper as we age. The folds when more pronounced make one look older and tired than ones actual age thus becoming cosmetically undesirable.

The most significant factors that contribute to the prominence of the fold are excess skin, skin thinning, excess cheek fat, and ptosis of cheek fat. Nose to mouth lines or folds are one of the earliest signs of facial ageing, as we age, the cheek skin falls down or drapes over the nasal labial line to create the nasolabial fold.

A youthful face is a full face with plump cheeks. A structure called the malar fat pad is attached to our cheek bones high in the face and gives a plump or high cheek bone appearance. As our ageing skin and cheek fat pad sag downward, the nasal labial line blocks the downward sag, the loose skin and cheek fat pad fall over the nasal labial line thus creating a fold of skin-the nasal labial fold.

Most people, specially in age group 30-50 years, seek cosmetic and dermatological treatments as these nasolabial lines become too deep or pronounced. There are both surgical and non-surgical methods to correct the nasal labial fold.

Take it easy

Non-surgical correction of Nasolabial lines or folds include:

  • The most common non-surgical method is to inject soft tissue filler into the Nasolabial fold line to plump the deep line beneath the Nasolabial fold. This technique plumps and camouflages the line and makes the overlying fold less obvious. Fillers are biodegradable and do need to be repeated at six month to one year intervals.
  • The liquid face lift technique also uses soft tissue fillers but they are used to plump the mid cheek area and the cheek bone area. The effect is to plump and lift the sagging cheek and pull the nasal labial fold higher.
  • Fat transfer is a more permanent filling solution to correct Nasolabial fold lines and mid face aging. Fat is harvested from an area of fat excess in the body, usually the hips or abdomen and injected into the mid face region.
  • Skin tightening with laser and light therapies are new non-surgical skin tightening technologies available. All are based on the concept of heating the deep layers of the skin to 60 degrees centigrade, the collagen in the skin will then shrink and the skin will tighten. This deep skin heating has to be achieved while the surface of the skin is cooled, otherwise the skin could be injured. The best results though achieve only a 20-30 per cent skin tightening, usually not enough to lift the cheek or lessen the nasal labial fold.

In the magical world
Manpriya Singh

What happens when the mystery of street magic meets the raw power of science? Breaking Magic fuses the showmanship of the two and makes you learn the chemistry, physics and biology powering world's greatest illusions. Sounds like something? Discovery Channel's show Magic of Science 2 in its second season is "a lot stronger with some better and pure magic." Billy Kidd, one of the popular magicians, who'll be a part of the series, goes above and beyond the typical well-rounded performer. "There are 15 episodes in it altogether and I think there will be some better magic and some cooler science. You will also see little bits of pure magic that is not science-based," shares the UK-based magician about what to expect.

Split second

Raised in Edmonton, Canada, her performance roots began with extensive training in ballet, tap and hip hop. The education also extends to music; piano, saxophone and violin. Magic just happened?

She shares, "Magic happened really late in my life. I used to work professionally as an actor for my entire life and then seven years ago, a friend of mine showed me a little magic trick and it changed my life completely. In that moment, I decided to become a magician.” However, fusing science with magic hasn't been an overnight endeavour. It is, as she likes to put it, "very difficult. As a magician, we normally don't use these types of science demonstrations to do magic. Magicians usually use sleight of hand and lot of other different ways of producing magic. So it's difficult to fuse the two together because science is very unpredictable in a way."

Great suspense

Magic now forms a part of life, the part that she loves for various reasons. 'I like a lot of things about magic. It is the idea of being able to do unbelievable things and I love the reaction from the audience. I love doing what seems impossible. The best part about magic is the opportunity of opening up this secret door in people's brains, where usually it is closed." Part of the magic is keeping the suspense alive.

Sleight of hand

Magic has often been perceived as creating rabbits out of habits; she likes to define it as, "a sleight of hand. Magic is all sleight of hand and entertainment in that sense. I don't preach that I have powers of any sort. I'm upfront about the fact that what we do is sleight of hand and illusions. It's not real but part of being a magician is to make it look like real.

Tapering dresses and loose lowers are what you should be wearing this summer

Their collection at the Wills India Fashion Week was received well. The mix of drape and structure was an unusual combination and caught the fancy of fashion enthusiasts. Kiran and Meghna, the fashion designer duo, behind the Myoho label, couldn't ask for more.

They give some fashion tips that will perk up your style quotient.

What's in: This season, sheath dresses are very popular. We have already seen a lot of celebrities sporting it, from Madhuri Dixit to Deepika Padukone, and will continue to see more. Lowers should be loose and easy, so that makes plazzo pants and Pakistani straight trousers must-haves. The silhouette of tapering dresses are in, with just the right length, neither too long, nor too short. Let the hemline just end at the calves. Also styling is a must this season, which means, add a statement neckpiece to a monochrome dress or wear big earrings with a printed dress. Go for unusual pairing, team up a jacket with a dress or cropped tee with palazzos.

What's out: Anything fitted isn't meant for this summer, when the temperature soars beyond 45 degrees. Any thick fabric is out. Go for sheers instead. In terms of colours, give rest to neons. We have had an overdose of those.

Colour count: The summer colours are again in fashion, so try yellow, orange and green in various hues. The classic black and white combination is being seen on a lot of dresses, tops and jumpsuits.

Party couture: Try different necklines in dresses. Instead of opting for the usual, go for a bandhgala or an off-shoulder. The bias cut is getting popular by the day, which is an asymmetric hemline. A party dress must fit well but should strictly be made in flowing fabric.

Dressed to the nines: Sonam Kapoor has established herself as the most stylish actress of India. She has seldom failed to make a mark, she stands apart in a crowd. Also, Deepika Padukone has emerged as a very stylish actress. Her red carpet appearances make for study material for celebrity stylists. She is great with accessories and is a perfect clotheshorse.

Leading in design: What sets Abraham and Thakore different from others is the way they revive and use Indian textiles and yet give them a very international appeal. They are the masters of cut and fabric, they know how to reinvent a fabric and at the same time, use it to create some path breaking silhouettes.

On the Indian fashion industry: We are faring great, given the age of our industry, but we still have long way to go. We need to organise our market, create clientele not just in India, but internationally too. Also important is more fashion institutes, so that quality education is imparted and artist designers are produced.

Master Chef
Paneer perfection
Kandla Nijhowne

Shahi paneer has almost become the best known restaurant dish in the paneer category, sidelining the less considered "do-pyaaza". Do pyaaza is exactly that, two different styles of prepping the onions that go into making this lovely dish. One lot is chopped fine and browned well so it lends towards a mushy, robust gravy. The other portion is left in large pieces which are nick-named 'petals'.

  • 400 gm fresh paneer
  • 4 medium onions
  • 2 tsp kasuri methi
  • 1--2 tbsp chopped green chilli
  • 5 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 inch piece of ginger, peeled and cut into matchsticks
  • 6 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
  • 1 tsp jeera
  • 3-4 elaichis
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 tsp dhaniya powder
  • ¼ tsp haldi powder
  • chilli powder
  • salt to taste
  • ¾ tsp garam masala
  • ½-1 tsp sugar
  • 5 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp cream
  • 2-3 tbsp chopped dhaniya

Method

Chop half the onions into a fine dice. Quarter the other onions and separate out the 'petals'. Add a tablespoonful of oil to a kadhai, then lightly fry the onion petals. Remove the petals and keep aside. Add the remaining oil to the kadhai and add the bay leaves, elaichi and jeera. When they become fragrant and the jeera splutters, add the chopped onion. Brown slightly and add ginger and garlic. Stir till soft, then add the tomatoes and chillies. Stir well and season with salt, haldi and dhaniya powder. Add sugar to taste, basically to balance the tartness of the tomatoes. Tip in the paneer cubes, kasuri methi and onion petals and stir. Adjust seasoning add a half a cup of water and cook for 6-10 minutes. Uncover and add cream, give it a gentle stir, then serve garnished with dhaniya. Great with chappatties, paranthaas or rice.

Essence of Haider

Vishal Bhardwaj talks about his trilogy of Shakespeare, his upcoming film Haider which is set in Kashmir, and more.

Shooting in Kashmir

Tragically beautiful, and after almost four decades, a film was shot there completely. Kashmir is Kashmir. You don't find the topography elsewhere, nor the Chinar trees. So many films have come out of strife torn Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam, but not Kashmir, the biggest tragedy in our political history. Its politics is the perfect backdrop for Haider.

Disciplined crowd

It's still a lovely place with lovely people who are obsessed with Bollywood. Some of the chaos was caused simply because the locals were so excited to have us in their midst. But unlike in UP and Bihar, they did not pass lewd remarks and even the 5000-strong crowd was disciplined.

Shakespearean trilogy

It will complete the trilogy of tragedies. After Maqbool and Omkara, I'd taken a break from Shakespeare but then decided to return and complete Hamlet before someone else ruined it. The choice was between Hamlet and King Lear. Hamlet won because I wanted to set this film in Kashmir. Besides the political intrigues, the story also has its sexual conflicts. In Macbeth/Maqbool, we had a woman torn between two men, in Othello/Omkara, a man crazed by suspicion and jealousy brought on by his wife's beauty. In Hamlet/Haider, it's a man torn between his young love and his mother. The film will subtly touch on the Oedipus complex.

Real Haider

There are many of them. There's a Haider in me too, who has been waiting to avenge my father's loss, even after all these years. He was a poet too and died in an accident. I've decided to dedicate the film to him. My mother shifted with me to Mumbai, she's been living with me all these years.

B-Town’s punctual on-screen couple

Holiday is the fourth film in which Sonakshi Sinha has been cast with Akshay Kumar. She says there's no doubt that they share a good working rapport, but the fact that they are both punctual also keeps the producers happy.

The duo has earlier featured in films like Rowdy Rathore, Joker and Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara.

"Holiday is my fourth film with Akshay. I think once when a pair is accepted, people like enjoy watching them together onscreen and I guess that's why people even cast them," Sonakshi said.

The actress, who has also worked with Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor, added: "Luckily, I've had a very good working rapport will all of my co-stars. Nobody has complained about me and they never said they don't want to work with me.

"So that comfort level is there even with Akshay sir and I think we work very well together also we both are very punctual people, so our producers are very happy about it."

She is looking forward to Holiday. Her other projects include Tevar and Prabhudheva's Action Jackson, which are keeping her busy as of now.

"Right now I am juggling between two things at one time and I am loving it and enjoying the process altogether. This makes me happy and also I learn a lot from this," she said.

Vir Das is primarily known for his brand of comedy and comic timing, but he plays a dark character in Revolver Rani. He says an actor must try different things, and with his latest film, he's just stepping out of his "comfort zone".

"As an actor, it's my responsibility to try different things. I am known for my comedy timing, but I'm coming out of my comfort zone and trying different genres," Vir said.

"If you will see the line-up of my upcoming films, you will realise what I am taking about," added the actor-comedian, who has Sanjay Chhel's untitled next, and Santa Banta in his kitty.

Talking about Revolver Rani, which features Bollywood's Queen in the lead role, he said: "It is an unusual film which I have not attempted before. It's a film with the pulp."

Asked if he feels he will overshadowed by Kangana, Vir said: "You have to see the film for that as I said I choose to do this film for a reason as it's very unusual." The film is directed by Sai Kabir.

No nudity for Alia

Actress Alia Bhatt, who was seen in a bikini in her debut film Student Of The Year, has done a few lip-locking scenes in her upcoming film, 2 States with Arjun Kapoor. However, she says that she will not go nude for any film as she is not comfortable with nudity.

She said, "I would never go ahead and do a nude scene as it is something I am not comfortable doing."

Justifying her kissing scene in 2 States, she added: "This film (2 States) starts where most rom-coms end. It starts with them already being a relationship and wants to get married. So to justify the fact that they are together for a while, there is intimacy between them. They are modern, forward thinking and at the same time very cultured and cater to conservative family. You see it (kissing) for three seconds in the trailer and that is how it is in the film."

Maisie in Star Wars

British actress Maisie Richardson-Sellers is the latest name to be linked to Star Wars: Episode VII.

Richardson-Sellers, an Oxford-educated unknown who has appeared in university plays and a short film, is reportedly being lined up to play a descendant of Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Disney and Lucasfilm are currently in the middle of an extended casting search in London ahead of a filming start date next month.

Adam Driver has been strongly linked to a Sith role in Episode 7, while original trilogy stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are expected to reprise their roles.

Han's wookie sidekick Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and droids C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) are also likely to return. The storyline, penned by director JJ Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt, will take place 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi.
