MC goes slow on liquor vends

MCI poll: Counting of votes postponed

Scrutiny and counting of votes in the Medical Council of India (MCI) elections have been postponed since 50 per cent members of the MCI in Punjab have not received ballots. The counting was scheduled for April 11.

In a corruption case involving Ludhiana-based Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Gurcharan Singh and one agent Budh Singh, charges have been framed by a Mohali court here today.

Ludhiana, April 10
After scrutiny, 21 nomination papers have been cancelled while the papers of 23 candidates have been found valid. A total of 30 candidates had filed 44 nomination papers (some candidates had filed more than one nomination) till April 9. The scrutiny of the nominations was done in the office of the Returning Officer at the Mini-secretariat.

26 cases registered under Defacement of Property Act violations
Ludhiana, April 10
As many as 26 cases of violation of the Defacement of Property Act have come to light in Ludhiana district. Of these, 18 FIRs have been lodged against "unknown" persons, 14 under the Defacement of Property Act and four under and Railway Protection Act. In the remaining eight cases, letters have been issued to lodge FIRs.

Dayanand Medical College Hospital (DMCH) begins the celebration of its golden jubilee year, as it adds another feather to its achievements. The newborn unit of the hospital has been awarded with level-III accreditation by National Neonatology Forum (NNF), which is the highest level of accreditation for newborn facilities. NNF is a central body that assesses various newborn care units in India.

She said she is launching her sarees in association with Tara Jewellers in Ludhiana as the first place to start with. She said she has been meeting with women of Ludhiana, who are very fashion conscious, she said. So she has started her launch campaign here ahead of even Delhi, she said. She said she always loves coming to Punjab and it feels great to be here, she added.

The five-day pulse polio drive concluded here today. As many as 1,579 teams were constituted for the drive, including 99 mobile teams and 67 transit teams. On Day 5, the teams visited nearly 1,35,054 houses and a total of 62,688 children were vaccinated.

The experts of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have called upon the farmers to adopt baby corn cultivation to enhance net farm incomes and promote crop diversification in the state. The experts said baby corn is in great demand in five star hotels, airlines, shipping companies and European countries. There is a great export potential for this crop, they observed, while adding that Thailand, Taiwan, Guatemala, South Africa, and China are major baby corn producing and exporting countries. USA, Japan, Hongkong, Singapore, Australia, and European countries are major importing countries, they told.

Polio surgery camp
Members of the Bhagwan Mahavir Sewa Sansthan at the polio camp in Ludhiana on Thursday. A polio surgery camp was held at Viklang Sahaiyta Kender, Rishi Nagar, today. The camp was organised by Bhagwan Mahavir Sewa Sansthan. This was the 20th free polio operation camp. Besides performing free operations, artificial limbs, tricycles, wheel chair and hearing aids were also distributed. President of Bhagwan Mahavir Sewa Sansthan said a polio-afflicted person is required to stay at the hospital for four days.
