Pollution board clerk held for graft

Panchkula, April 8
The Vigilance Bureau today caught a clerk with the Haryana State Pollution Control Board red-handed while receiving a bribe of Rs 50,000.

The accused, Ajit, has been arrested for taking the bribe to grant a permanent license for a kiln to a Barwala resident. The victim said he had a temporary licence to run the kiln and when he approached Ajit for getting a permanent licence, the latter said it would cost Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 had to be given in advance. — TNS

Aesha Patel from Gujarat defeated Ishwari Matere, in straight sets 7-5 and 6-2 in the girls’ (U-16) category, during CLTA-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament, being held at the CLTA tennis courts here today.

In the boys (U-16) category, top seed Param Pun defeated Jagdeep Bajwa in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 while 2nd seed Vikrant Dahiya beat CLTA trainee Rishabh Sharda 6-1 and 6-0. CLTA trainee, Sumit Pal Singh defeated another local trainee Rohit Kumar 6-1 and 6-3. In the boys (U-12), Bhupender Dahiya and Krishan Hooda reached quarter-finals with straight set wins over their opponents.

Amateur association to hold bodybuilding c’ship on April 13

The Chandigarh Amateur Body Building Association will organise 25th Silver Jubilee Senior Mr. Chandigarh and 12th classic Mr. Chandigarh Body Building Championship on April 13 at Maharashtra Bhawan, Sector 19, Chandigarh. 

The organisers informed that weighing-in will be held on April 12th at CABBA office in, Sector 17-A, Chandigarh from 03.00 pm to 05.00 pm. The pre-judging and the final pose down will be held on April 13th at 10 am onwards at Maharashtra Bhawan. The Championship will be held in the following weight categories for 24th Mr Chandigarh Body Building Championship 55 Kg, 60 Kg, 65 Kg, 70 Kg, 75 Kg, 80 Kg, 85 Kg & above 90 Kg.

Ishaan clinches squash title

Ishaan Nayar, Ekam Singh and Maurya Nagpal claimed top three positions in the boys (U-11) during the concluding day of Chandigarh State Squash Meet held at the Lake Sports Complex. In the boys (U-13) event, Prithvi Singh, Shivam Gulati and Akhilesh Kumar attained first three positions.

CGC win inter-club golf meet

Chandigarh, April 8
The Chandigarh Golf Club hosted an inter-club golf championship where a total of 12 teams participated. The teams from Delhi, Ambala, Patiala, Panchkula, Chandimandir participated in the event. The event was held in two categories including men and women categories. 

The Chandigarh Golf club won in both the categories. The men’s team consisted of Gurinderjit Sandhu, Bismad Singh, Arvind Bajaj and Bobby Sandhu while the ladies team Pauline, Rima Dhillon, Dimple Minocha and S Ratia won the championship. Yash Das from Ambala will be hosting the next inter club event - Metro Cup and it will be expanded to 25 teams from all the golf clubs in the northern region.

Badminton tourney begins on April 16

The Chandigarh Badminton Club affiliated to Chandigarh State Badminton association will organise Tri-city Junior/ Sub-Junior Talent Hunt Prize Money Badminton Tournament, here.

The tournament will be conducted for under 10-years, 13-years, 15-years, 17-years and 19-years (boys and girls) categories from April 16 to 20, at the badminton hall of Sector 42 Sports Complex.

The winners will be awarded with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

The interested players can ensure their entries before April 11 with Vijay Sharma, organising secretary at Sector 42 Sports Complex, Chandigarh.

GNPS lift cricket trophy

Cricket team of Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, defeated KK Cricket Academy and lifted the 1st KK Cricket League Championship for boys (U-14), being held here. In the final match, the GNPS side defeated Kk Cricket Academy by 2 wickets. Batting first, the host side bundled out on a mere total of 118-runs in 26 overs. Aayush (56 off 46) and Prithivi Lohtiya (24 off 26) scored the major share in team's total while for Pankaj claimed 4 for 23 and Karanveer took 2 for 26.

In reply, GNPS scored 120 runs for 8 wickets in 29 overs. Ritik Shukla (37 off 25), Anshul Negi (22 off 22) and Karanveer (23 off 23) spearheaded the team to victory. For bowling side, Prithivi Lohtiya claimed 3 for 27.

Pawan enters final

Local representative Pawan Kapoor reached in the final of Rabo Bank Tennis tournament, being held in Holland, today. Pawan Kapoor defeated Mick Vanmeines in a keenly contested three-set match, which lasted over 2 hours. Pawan lost the first set 4-6 however in second set Pawan started playing his top game and on the back of some solid ground-strokes took the second set 6-4.

In the final set both the players played tough and leveled at 3-3. Pawan, reducing his own unforced errors, took the final set 6-3. The final score was 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
