25th Junior National Baseball Championship for Boys

Chandigarh, April 5
Bringing laurels to the City Beautiful after 15 years, the local baseball side won the title of the 25th Junior National Baseball Championship for Boys. The championship was held at Cuttack (Odisha), last month.

The 15-member squad scripted victory after defeating Delhi in the final of the championship 3-0. Earlier, in the semifinal, Chandigarh defeated Odisha 5-3. Before reaching the final four stage, the team registered a thumping win over Maharashtra 5-2.

In the league matches, the local side faced defeat against Uttrakhand 6-2. However, the team managed to win the other two games against Kerala (10-5) and Karnataka (10-0) to advance in the championship.

ONGC beat BPCL in hockey semifinal

Chandigarh, April 5
In the semifinal, ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited) trounced last year’s runner-up BPCL (Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited) 3-2 during the 32nd Inter-Petroleum Hockey Tournament at the Mohali Hockey Stadium.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited will now face defending champions IOC (Indian Oil Corporation) in the final, while Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited will play GAIL for the match of third position.

Earlier today, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited, Delhi, started the day at a fast pace, with shifting their focus to short passes and regular penetration.

The team attained their first penalty corner in the 9th minute and in no time, drag flicker Divakar Ram scored the first goal. Divakar again, with a big-leap, doubled the lead in the 18th minute.

After dominating initial minutes, the team again came back with strong moves and scored the third goal through Pardhan Somanna in the 24th minute.

On the other hand, down to three goals, the BPCL fought back and reduced the margin in the 26th minute through Jarnail Singh. Just before the lemon-break, Amir Khan of BPCL hit another goal for the team with converting a penalty corner in the 35th minute.

In the second half, BPCL tried their best, but, however, failed to reduce the lead. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited goalkeeper Dinesh Ekka saved the day for the team.

90 matches played on Day 1 of tennis meet

The CLTA-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament commenced at the CLTA’s (Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association) courts in Sector 10, here today.

Over 90 matches of qualifying rounds were played on Day 1. In the opening match of boys’ category (under-16), Prateek Saroha defeated Parmeet Deol 9-1, whereas Mahesh Mohapatra beat Rehan Sareen 9-4.

In the boys’ under-12 category, Nihar Patel beat Sohard Batra 9-1 and Abhinav defeated Hardik Choudhary 9-0. In the first round of girls’ (under-12) category, Nimrat Atwal defeated Sanvi Bhatia 9-0.

Chess championship begins

Chandigarh, April 5
Chandigarh Open and Girls Chess Championship started at St Xavier's Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, here today. Nagpal Tejas, Ishaan Singh Mendiratta, Anubhav Tuknayat and Jaskeerat Singh led the day with three points each in the third round of the open category.

A total of 52 boys and girls will be participating in the championship. Top performers, two each in boys’ and girls’ category, will be selected to represent the city in the upcoming nationals to be held at Pondicherry from May 19 to May 28 and in Bihar from December 2 to December 10.
