Speeding vehicle kills 14-year-old girl in city

Chandigarh, March 18
A 14-year-old pedestrian, Sabina, a resident of EWS Colony, Dhanas, was killed and her two friends were injured when a speeding Mahindra pick up hit them on Monday. The deceased, a student of Class V, had gone to play Holi when the jeep hit them.

Sabina along with her two friends -- Sheela and Neelam -- was rushed to GMSH-16 from where she was referred to PGI. She later succumbed to her injuries.

The two injured were discharged from GMSH-16.

Sabina has left behind her parents and three siblings.

The accused driver was allegedly in an inebriated condition when the incident took place. He escaped from the spot.

Insitha Ahmed, Sabina’s father, said, “Sabina had left the house to play Holi with her friends an hour before the accident”.

SI Ranjeet Singh said the Mahindra pick up, bearing a Chandigarh registration number, had been impounded. A case has been registered at the Sector 11 police station.

In another accident, a scooter rider lost his life after his vehicle was hit by a motorcycle.

Deceased Raju, a resident of Sector 25, was killed when a speeding motorcycle -- being driven by one Harkesh Singh -- hit his scooter near the Khuda Ali Sher stadium.

Both the injured were rushed to PGI where Raju succumbed to his injuries. A case has been registered at the Sector 11 police station.

3 die in road mishaps

Mohali, March 18
Three persons died in separate accidents that occurred in the past two days in the  district. In the first incident, occurred at Lalru yesterday, Sudhir Ghosh from West Bengal died in a collision between an Activa scooter and a cycle on the Dera Bassi-Ambala highway.

The deceased was riding pillion on the scooter with his friend Mohir Parkash from Dappar. The cyclist was identified as Nirmal Singh from Lalru. Ghosh sustained serious injuries and was shifted to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, where he succumbed to his injuries later.

In another incident, a young migrant, Sandhu Lala, was killed when he was hit by a speedy car near Dera Bassi bus stand on Sunday evening.

The police said the victim’s mother, Usha Rani, alleged that she along with her son was walking along the road near the bus stand when a speedy car bearing registration number PB65K 4812 hit the victim from behind. He was declared brought dead at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi.

In the third incident, Mohammad Aslam lost his life when his motorcycle was hit by some unidentified vehicle on Sunday evening on the Railway Road Bridge in Dera Bassi.

Aslam was with his brother Avidh Hussein at the time of the incident. They originally hailed from Gulberga in Karnataka.

The police have registered separate cases.

Man stabbed to death in Rajiv Colony

Panchkula, March 18
A man was stabbed to death outside his hutment in Rajiv Colony here on the intervening night of March 16 and 17. On Sunday night, Jagdish alias Kala, a migrant labourer, and Vinod Kumar, a resident of Mauli Jagran originally hailing from Bihar, had an altercation over an old dispute. The duo was reportedly drunk.

Sub-Inspector Surjit Singh said after the scuffle, Vinod returned to his place in Mauli Jagran. Later, armed with a sharp-edged weapon and accompanied by his friend Anil, Vinod reached Jagdish’s hutment and challenged him. As Jagdish came out, Anil caught hold of him while Vinod stabbed him (Jagdish) four times in his abdomen, chest and face.

In the wee hours, some passersby noticed the injured Jagdish and raised an alarm, following which he was rushed to the Government Hospital in Sector 6, Panchkula, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The police reportedly laid a naka on the road separating Sectors 17 and 18 and nabbed Vinod Kumar, who was allegedly trying to flee out of the city, on Monday.

The police said Vinod’s accomplice Anil was still at large. Vinod Kumar and Anil have been booked for murder at Sector 16 police post. — TNS

Pet dog shot at point-blank range

Chandigarh, March 18
Unidentified persons allegedly shot a female dog at point-blank range outside the Congress Bhawan in Sector 35 on the intervening night of March 16 and 17. Vinod Kumar, the owner of the female dog named Julie, is a watchman at the Congress Bhawan.

Acting on his complaint, the police registered a case against unidentified people under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act-1960 and Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle), IPC.

Kumar told the police that he was at his residence inside the bhawan when he heard a loud sound, as if somebody had fired a gunshot.

Kumar said he rushed outside and saw Julie lying in a pool of blood. The canine, also bearing an injury mark on the neck, was dead.

He immediately informed the police. In his complaint, Kumar alleged that when he rushed outside, he saw a black-coloured Esteem car flee from the spot.

Meanwhile, the police said the bullet injuries would be confirmed after the canine’s post-mortem report. The police are investigating.

Cheating case against Berkeley Automobiles

The Berkeley Automobiles, Phase I, Industrial Area, is in trouble again as the Chandigarh Police has registered a case against its director and two employees for cheating a customer.

Following a complaint by Manish Rajanwal, a resident of Mani Majra, a case has been registered against Ranjeev Dahuja, director, Berkeley Automobiles, sales executive Vikrant Thakur and assistant manager (sales) Lalit at the Industrial Area police station. Rajanwal stated that the automobile dealer sold him a car on forged documents.

On January 30, 2013, the police had arrested three persons and claimed to have unearthed a scam of selling cars on forged documents by some employees of the Maruti dealer. They were accused of selling Swift and Swift Dzire cars to customers by preparing forged documents such as insurance cover note and temporary registration number.

Db deodhar trophy
Harbhajan to lead North Zone

Chandigarh, March 18
Spinner Harbhajan Singh will lead the North Zone during the DB Deodhar Trophy, a cricket tournament, to be played at Vizag. The North Zone has got a direct entry to the semifinals and will face the South Zone on March 22.

During a meeting held at Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali today, the zonal selection committee finalised the team for the trophy and named Harbhajan Singh the leader of the north zone cricket team. Delhi’s opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has been named as his deputy.

The team has a total of 19 players, including four standbys.

Captain Sushil Kapoor and Ravi Raghuvanshi from Punjab have been appointed as the manager, and the physiotherapist, respectively.

The meeting was convened by Sunil Dev, convenor, North Zone, and chaired by Vikram Rathour, a national selector.
