Thieves decamp with valuables, set rooms on fire
Panchkula, March 16 The owner, Sandeep, was out for a wedding with his family when the incident took place. The owner runs a coaching centre. It was only after the neighbours saw flames coming out of the house that the police and the fire brigade were called. The police got suspicious when they found the grill broken. Signs of theft were visible as many valuables from the cupboards were missing. “Setting two bedrooms on fire and the other clues indicated that firstly a theft was committed and then intentionally the area was set on fire so that no evidence was left,” said additional station house officer of the Chandimandir police station, Sub-Inspector Amit Kumar. The owner was unable to tell the exact amount of loss as he suffered huge damage in the fire. A case has been registered at the Chandimandir police station against unidentified miscreants.
Similar theft incident in 2013
A similar kind of theft was initiated last year where the thieves had set a camera shop on fire after stealing cameras worth Rs 10 lakh in Sector 16, Panchkula. This was done to leave no evidence. However, they were caught later. |

City shooter to represent nation in Youth Olympics
Chandigarh, March 16 Bringing cheers to her sports’ career and a major boost to Indian junior level shooting, the ace shooter has shot her best, during the recently concluded 7th Asian air Gun Championship in Kuwait, to ensure a Youth Olympics Quota in the air pistol event. The10m air gun shooter will represent the nation, in the Youth Olympics, scheduled to be held in June in China. Earlier, in the Asian championship, Yashaswini shot ahead of her teammate Malaika Goel to claim an individual silver medal with 377 points. The Indian team won a gold medal in the youth women category. Yashaswini is practicing shooting since 2011 and has participated in as many as three international events. In addition to this, she has also represented Chandigarh in various nationals and participated in inter-school games. A student of Bhavan Vidalaya, Sector 27 and a daughter of a police officer, she has ended her Asian Shooting Competition, on a high note. “The tournament was great for me. I have won a gold medal in team’s championship while, in individual category, I bagged a silver medal. And my individual position helped me to claim the Youth Olympics Quota. And I am looking forward to perform well in this event. With good amount of time, in hand, I would be stressing on my release of trigger and my timings,” said Yashaswini. For making her comfortable in all manners, her father has installed a special shooting automatic range, at their residence. She performs her practice under the supervision of Tejinder Singh Dhillon, IGP of police (Retd.) and presently appointed as the manager of Lake Sports Complex. Also, during the time of competition, she practices ahead of her competition in Delhi. “I don’t know when my hobby became my passion. My coach, who is my uncle, always helps me to overcome every minute hurdle during my practice session and tournaments. Also, my father supports me throughout and provides me every facility to perform well,” said she. When asked about the improved infrastructure in City Beautiful for local shooters, she added, “It’s good that, we have quite some options to practice. With changes time, we are getting more opportunities and hopefully to fulfill these opportunities, we (local shooters) would get more and more facilities,” said Yashaswini. Earlier, she had represented the nation in Germany and Iran shooting championships and won individual medals, in the same competitions. “She is bright child with lot of potential. In the latest international competition, she performed excellently well and claimed her place. Even in practice session, she take my words as the must step to perform. Hopefully, she will continue to practice her aim in the same manner and win laurels for the country,” said her coach TS Dhillon, and vice-chairman of National Rifle Association of India. |
City team lose to Air India
Chandigarh, March 16 In the match of Pool A, Chandigarh’s men team went down against experienced side of Air India by 3-0. For Air India, Probodh Tirkey opened the team’s account with striking the wooden plank through a successful penalty corner conversion. He scored the first goal in the 30th minute. The city team failed to level the score however manage to stop the rivals at 1-0 till the first half. After lemon break, the Air India side came back strongly and Armaan Qureshi doubled the lead in the 60th minute followed by another goal by Vinod Vishnu in the 62nd minute. In their previous match, the city team defeated Andhra Pradesh by 4-2. |
