Travelling right
Those who visit foreign nations, but associate only with their own countrymen, change their climate, but not their customs…and with heads as empty as their pockets, return home with travelled bodies, but untravelled minds. Nearly 150 years later, there are still takers for Charles Caleb Colton's observations, which explore the concept of "tourist bubble"- a space defined as both physical, and to a great degree, mental. And as we explore beyond the conventionally slated ways of travelling by the tourism industry, we discover brand new possibilities of travelling and associating with different cultures, people, and that too free of cost or only at a nominal amount. While we assure you that this is definitely not going to be one of those holidays wherein a bus driver imparts the vast majority of local knowledge of the area to the tourist, we are certain that you will return home with large pockets, large hearts, travelled bodies and equally well-travelled minds. All that you need to do is to register with the travel websites, which allow an easy and often free accommodation for backpackers. All you do is pay a little sum of money that you want to when you leave. That's how they roll Backpackers and independent travellers have proved to be quick to adopt new means of communicating and meeting with one another. A number of online services have sprung up to illustrate this interconnectedness and help fellow travellers escape the tourist bubble. "The chief among these websites is the CouchSurfing project," says Abhinav Sharma, a Chandigarh-based traveller, musician and engineer while adding, "While in New Zealand, my flatmate, Jamie Foster, who is also a member of CouchSurfing organisation, told me about this website and he would often host travellers. These sites, especially CouchSurfing, are not social networking sites. It draws clear lines on who are the hosts and travellers and it's a portal where they connect, so people do not goof around here. It is a brilliant concept and I have hosted a plenty of travellers through this portal." While talking about the credibility of this account, his friend, Akshat, who is also a backpacker, backs Abhinav, "You can get your account verified in order to get more surfers or hosts. Also, most people on these accounts are genuine travellers. They are not hippies or vagabonds; they look for a meaningful exchange of cultures, to live at a place as a local." Safety measures "These sites have certainly made travelling convenient, cheap and more fruitful. As a user of this concept, when I visit a city, I am not only interested in the physiological or archaeological stuff, but I want to connect with the locals, explore their culture and the places they frequent. I want to see the place as an insider. I eat what they eat, live like them, I know what coffee they have and having experienced that I can understand the true essence of the country," says Amol Goel, founder, tbastudios.com and an avid traveller. "However, one needs to understand this web portal well that caters to the host and traveller/surfer and once the traveller stays with the host, they rate each other on the basis of experiences they have shared. So, all you need to do is see who has been rated as a good host or travel," shares Amol, who has been to Thailand, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Indonesia, UK, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Greece, Cyprus and Turkey through these travel sites. Kristin Schuster, a travel guide and traveller, who Amol is hosting at his residence in Zirakpur, shares, "I have travelled across 50 countries through these sites. Once I had a guy who kept approaching me. First, I accepted his request to stay at my place, but then when he came across as a weird person, I asked him to move out. You've got to be smart while choosing surfers and hosts. A few of these websites also provide phone and credit card verification, so it is
safe."

Horsepower!
The fact that it is a team sport played on the horseback gets lost somewhere in the din of flamboyant hats and dignified hemlines. "We talk of value of vehicles in terms of horsepower, this is the real horsepower," riding high on the success of recently concluded first ever series of Sher-e-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh Polo Premier Challenge at Ludhiana, organiser Maninder Singh Sethi takes an opportunity to put the emphasis back to where it belongs. "I like the fact that you are riding a beast, controlling his mind and at the same time concentrating on the ball," he briefs on some of the best things about sport, apart from the widely associated aura of glamour. "Personally for me, this factor is very inspiring. It helps you to multi-task.” The lessons from the field that can be widely replicated in everyday life!
On revival mode The event in Ludhiana was significant for reasons that go back in history and extend just as much to the future. "Punjab has produced the highest number of polo handicap players. We also have a rich history when it comes to the sport. There are decent numbers of stud farms, we have, suitable climate, and we got the land too." What doesn't make sense is why it needs to be revived despite all the advantages the state offers. "There are no technical reasons as to why it's not been happening so far. But as a public event, this is the first polo match that has happened in a long time," shares he who is also the president, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Polo Federation. He adds, "From now on, it will be an annual event.” Personal journey His personal engagement with the sport remains a result of raw passion. "It started with a simple desire to learn riding. There was no place in Ludhiana where I could learn riding. Everyday for four months, I made a trip from Ludhiana to Chandigarh to learn riding," he laughs. It was only a matter of time before he realised the potential of the sport and its relevance in the state. "After eight months of hard work, the Ludhiana event happened. We are building up a team from Punjab itself, engaging a lot of youth. A polo training academy is also on the way." In an endeavour to popularise, there is a delicate balance to maintain. "I want the game to become popular but at the same time not spoil its aura by making it mainstream." The game doesn't need an image makeover. What it does need is the infrastructure. "I am looking for a venue in Chandigarh. It would be great if we can have two to three venues in Punjab. A game of polo requires a field the size of 10 football grounds." The man, who couldn't learn riding in the city, sent the entire Ludhiana shopping for polo since the dress code was stylish chic."
Gleam and gallops
The fine gleaming horses, the graceful trots and gallops, grace was juxtaposed with adventure as the stately riders of the horses were hitting the ball with finesse as the royal sport of Polo was played in Ludhiana. The elite of the state came swarming in to the first edition of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Polo Premier Challenge. An array of luxury cars and thunder of Harley Davidsons added the touch of luxury to this uber elite event. Noted Polo players, including Rajkumar Karan Vijay Singh, Dhruv Pal, Manupal Godara, Ashwini Sharma, Vishal Singh, Anmol Ratan Singh, Sachin Sarbalia and Baljinder Dhillon were part of the event. Punjab saddlers stole away the trophy from Royal Challengers on the final scoring. — Gurvinder Singh manpriya@tribunemail.com

Keeping up with Kenya
The hunt for a destination is sometimes as long as the journey itself. It's an endeavour to land in a paradise which packs in all--wildlife, culture, mountains and adventure. Kenyans proudly raise their hands and promise much more with an infectious 'jambo' (means 'hello' in Swahili, the local language). Here are five good reasons to make the summer reservations for Kenya.
Places to explore Mystic and wild, an ornithologists' dream and a photographer's paradise. There is always much more to explore in the African country. The wildlife in Kenya is legendary and so are the national parks that house it. Shares Jacinta Nzioka Mbithi, director of marketing, during an event in Chandigarh, "We have as many as 59 national parks which include marine national parks, where you can choose from a host of marine activities. Apart from the world famous Masai Mara, there's Lake Nakuru National Park, which has so many flamingoes that the lake just looks pink. The Kenyan coastline is shark free and is 450 km long." Food and language In the quest for far flung places, there is always a desire for comfort food. Familiar food that transports you back to hometown, all along while you are continents away. Shares Jacinta Nzioka Mbithi, "You'll find Indian restaurants and typical Indian food everywhere, especially Punjabi cuisine. There are several reasons for this. Apart from the fact that there is a large Indian Diaspora in Africa and a lot of tourists every year, we are a former British colony, which ensured that there was always a strong presence of Indian people here." As for the language, "English is the language of communication in Kenya. It is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants and all tourism establishments." Security and culture Unusual as it may sound but the guides find a place of mention in the tourism brief. "One thing I'd like to point out about the place is that guides in the country are well acquainted with everything and they have an understanding of the area in terms of wildlife and communities. The person driving you around safari ensures one comes back much more enriched," shares Chiranjib Biswas, destination manager. He adds, "It's as unsafe or as safe as any other country in S Africa." Something for everyone While there's no denying its popularity as a photographer's paradise, a couple of things still remain unknown. "We are also trying to promote the country as the ultimate honeymoon destination. We have balloon safari for a couple, the concept of a star bed, blue waters and virgin beaches." He adds, "There are as many as 40 beautiful golf courses in the country, including the one on Mount Kenya." Holiday like the stars White sands, blue water and green savannahs, there is a lot going for the country. Shares Jacinta Nzioka Mbithi, "Mount Kenya is surrounded by beautiful castles and caves. Moreover there is a lot of cultural engagement in the area. Queen Elizabeth had her honeymoon here, Kate and Will got engaged here. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are popularly known to have holidayed at this place."
Fun facts about Kenya
Before marriage, Kenyans still pay a dowry to the bride's family, which starts at 10 cows. The men of Kenya are allowed to have more than one wife, if the first one agrees to it. manpriya@tribunemail.com

thumb Satish Narula Flower competitions and shows are in progress at various places now. Last week we discussed about how to display cut flowers. Another section in the show is potted plants. Though not many participate in this section due to the hazards of carrying pots to the spot yet there are many participants who compete for this section. First and the foremost thing to look for is the cleanliness of the pots. Participants may have planted good specimen plants but may lose points due to the shabby look of the pot. Colour the pots in their original colour. Do not paint these with gaudy colours like deep blue, yellow, brown or even deep red. Clean the pot of the dust and the mould and smear it with mild red colour, that is, the natural earthen colour of the pot. This you can do by using geru available in the market. Use only the size of the pots that are specified for a particular section or type. Any deviation may lead to disqualification. In case more than one pot are required to be entered, try to place the pots with different varieties. Make sure the potted plants have good number of supporting leaves. Do not select those pots that have lost leaves due to some insect or disease. Also make sure these are free from insects and diseases. Presence of insects earns you negative points. You may discuss with some expert before displaying the pots about the specifications if any that earn you points. It is the condition of the pots at the time of judging. Any new introduction earns you extra points. Some of the plants like nasturtium, petunia etc are weak stemmed and need support. Use kanna and sutli (stick and thin rope) to secure the plants. Doing this, will 'fill' the pot with flowers too. While using the stick (kanaa) make sure it is not too high to go beyond the height of the flowers in the pot. In general, one should use the pots with stable base. A pot bent on one side, even a small bent will make the growth lop-sided. At times some of the participants use baskets in this section. Do not do so. A basket is not big enough to compete with pots and normally do not have that kind of mass and effect. You may also be disqualified. Do not try to transplant flowering seedlings fresh from the beds. The judges can see e through such things easily. (Narula is Chandigarh-based PAU senior horticulturist and landscapist) |

In active mode
Being smartly dressed now starts from early years and by the time one enters teenage years, fashion becomes a habit. Now we can see many well turned out youngsters everywhere. Of course, it is the one who carries the right attitude who is bestowed with the title of trendsetter. A medical student Tulika Saggar tells us about her sense of style.
Your sense of style Proper shoes and a stylish watch along with a smart and 'active' attitude denote style for me. Brand crazy or street pick-up? Only brands will do for me. Who would be your style icon? It would be my mom and Deepika Padukone too. Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity? Sunny Leone surely! Which look would your prefer— sporty, chic or glamorous? Chic. Your take on accessories… Small ones to accentuate my dress will do. Especially bracelets and a bangle or two. Given a choice which designer would you like to be dressed by? Ritu Kumar is my all-time favourite. What gives you a high on the confidence level? When I am just 'me' in dressing comfort and attitude I feel just relaxed and naturally confident. —As told to Poonam Bindra |

Tap it
The statistics claim that more than 40 per cent of Indian mobile users access internet through their mobile phone. Now whether these statistics question the redundancy of laptops and personal computers, is a completely different topic. But the news here is that with the e-commerce company, Flipkart, launching its app on the smart mobile phone and ios, you will be able to shop at the 'tap of a screen'. As Mausam Bhatt, director, mobile marketing, discusses the online shopping trends, he acquaints us with several convenient online shopping options.
"It has only been about five months that we launched the Flipkart mobile app and we already have more than 4 million people, who downloaded this app," says Bhatt, while adding, "The best feature about this app is that it has the barcode scanner. The user can scan the barcode of a product that they see at a shop and do comparative shopping as you can compare the price of the same product on our site. Also, we have a share option that allows one to share the picture of the product on social networking sites and get opinions about the same. Our other features remain the same, which are cash on delivery and 30 days return policy." For all those of you, who are harrowed about the delay in receiving the ordered product, can breathe a sigh of relief as Flipkart promises a 24-hour delivery. "We have a 24-hour delivery service that allows the customer to avail the products on time. Also, if the order does not reach within time, we offer compensations for that too," shares Payal Banerjee of Flipkart.

If you have been a fan of the Baby Doll item songs, here's a golden version that you must not miss. Spare your choice for the sake of Sunny Leone, who looks ravishing in this song titled Baby Doll Mai Sone Di. Baby Doll is a song from the film Ragini MMS starring Sunny Leone in lead role. Sung by Meet Bros Anjjan and Kanika Kapoor, the song is an urban Punjabi dance number. While Kunal Avanti and Meet Bros Anjjan have also rapped in the song, the lyrics have been given by Kumaar. Here's what the Chandigarh folks have to say about the song.
Sunny and bright It's a nice song and I think Sunny Leone is looking very pretty. Also, I like the music of the song. Nimrita Kaur, private bank employee Classy moves I like the music of the song, but the lyrics are not so good. However, considering that the song is an item number, I like the way it has turned out and Sunny Leone has pulled it off in a very classy way! Harit, businessman Peppy tone I like the music of the song, especially the vocals. It's an interesting composition. Also, I like the lyrics of the song. It's very peppy and upbeat. Kiss and tell
Steamy kissing scenes have become a very common part of films. This time around, Sonam Kapoor who has been seen playing some very interesting roles in her previous films will be seen kissing on screen for the first time.

She is a professional actress and has no qualms doing the role as the script demands."

chatter box
After a hiatus, Reena Kapoor of Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki fame has returned to TV with Zee TV's Aur... Pyaar Ho Gaya. Reena talks about her return to television, playing a mom on screen and more... How is it playing mom to a young girl? It's a nice experience and I am really enjoying the role. Initially I needed to be convinced about taking up the role. But I am glad I did. Soon, there will be a strong story track with my character which will make things interesting. What made you take up Aur... Pyaar Ho Gaya? It was not only the right opportunity for me, but also I wanted to work with producer Rajan Shahi. I wanted to work with him as he makes the family shows which suit the most. How was returning to work after a break? When I used to shoot for Woh Rehne Wali.., I would get Saturdays and Sundays off as we had a bank on Sahara, the channel. But here I have been continuously shooting which has been tough. Do you feel your character is similar to Woh Rehne Wali? Yes. Such a role of a family-oriented woman with values who tries to keep everyone together in her family suits me. I think I am most comfortable doing such roles as it comes naturally to me. What do your in-laws feel about the role and the show Aur...Pyaar Ho Gaya? They have watched the show and enjoy it too. My fans in fact tell me that they were disappointed that I was playing a mom to a young girl rather than the lead but are now fine with the casting.
