Abohar
5 booked for abduction:
Five persons, including a woman (Mansi of Jammu Basti), have been booked under Sections 363, 366 and 120 B of the IPC for abducting a girl student of Govt Model High School here, the police said. The girl was reportedly called from her house on Tuesday evening but did not return.

3 arrested under NDPS: In separate cases, Mukesh Kumar of Kular village, Lakhwinder Singh of Raniwala (Muktsar) and Gurdev Singh of Pakka Chishti village (Fazilka) were arrested under the NDPS Act. The police claimed to have seized 39 kg poppy husk and 6 gm of smack from them.

Labourer dies in accident: Surjit Kumar (26), a labourer working at a residential building in Kunj Vihar Colony at Sriganganagar in Rajasthan, slipped from the roof of the building and later, died at the local Civil Hospital. Sources said Surjit's family decided to cremate the body only when the owner of the building agreed to compensate for the loss of his life due to inadequate measures.

GNDU exams from March 18
: All essential arrangement for Guru Nanak Dev University annual exams has been finalised. These examinations will start from March 18. Prof RK Mahajan, in-charge (Examination), said the students who did not receive their roll numbers by March 15 should contact the examination branch of the university. He said the examination branch of the university would remained open on March 16 and17.

Doc gets bail in bribery case:
Faridkot Civil Surgeon Dr Baldev Singh Sahota, who was arrested by the vigilance department in a graft case, was released from the Central Jail today after he was granted bail. On February 21, he was arrested while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a pharmacist. The pharmacist wanted a clean chit in a case pertaining to the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act. The vigilance department got the doctor admitted in the local Civil Hospital after he complained of some medical complications. On February 26, he was shifted to Central Jail, Faridkot.

12-yr-old boy hurt in mishap:
A 12-year old boy was critically injured when his bicycle was hit by an unidentified canter near Talania village on the Fatehgarh Sahib-Bassi Pathana road on Tuesday. The injured boy has been identified as Princepal of Talania village. On the complaint of the boy’s father Surinder Singh, the police booked the unidentified canter driver.

Man held with poppy husk: The police arrested a drug peddler with 10 kg poppy husk at a naka on Wednesday. However, two peddlers managed to flee. Senior Superintendent of Police Gurmeet Chauhan said the arrested accused had been identified as Baljit Singh alias Jitta of Mandi Gobindgarh while those who fled were Manjinder Singh and Varinder Singh of Dera Mir Miran village.

Youth shot dead:
A youth was shot dead at Kandhaliyan village near Garhdiwala on Wednesday. The victim, Bindu (23), was shot when he was chatting with his friends outside his house. The victim was declared brought dead at Dasuya Civil Hospital. SHO Kulwant Singh said somebody attacked him to settle old scores. A case is yet to be registered.

r Nehra gets fellowship: The German’s Max Planck-DST Visiting Fellowship has been conferred on Dr Satya Pal Nehra, assistant professor, Centre of Excellence for Energy and Environmental Studies, at the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology, Murthal, Sonepat. Every year, Max Planck-DST Visiting Fellowships are awarded to three-four scientifically outstanding, promising and talented young Indian scientists.

Hasya kavi sammelan today
: The Media Manch and Language and Culture Department will organise a hasya kavi sammelan at the historic Kala Kendra here on March 13. Shyam Kullvi , state president, Media Manch, said the sammelan would commence from 11 am and a seminar on the ethics of journalism would also be conducted. District Language Officer Promila Guleria said renowned writers of the district would participate in the sammelan.

House theft case solved:
The police solved a case of theft committed in Prem Kumari's house in ward No. 6 in the town three days back by arresting two persons, including a girl hailing from the same locality, late last evening. They were produced in the court this evening and bailed out the court. The accused decamped with jewellery weighing around 125 gm.
