Annual athletics meet of local schools shelved for third time in a row
Chandigarh, February 23 As per the sports calendar of the UT Sports Department, released in May 2013, the meet was scheduled to be held in January 2014. However, due to extended winter holidays and preparation for the parade on January 26, the meet was postponed till February 15. And now, it has been further postponed till April due to the annual examinations of the players. Non-availability of the Sport Complex, Sector 7, (after February 15) is also cited as the cause of the delay. “The department was all set to organise the meet from February 18 to 21, however, due to non-availability of the Sports Complex, Sector 7, the meet was postponed yet again. The new dates will be decided after a meeting with the DPI (Director Public Instructions) schools. It will surely be conducted in the month of April now,” said an official, on the condition of anonymity. The delay has left the local athletes worried. According to a few of them, the delay will affect their performance, as they will remain out of practice due to coming examination. “The first month of the year is the best time to organise the athletics meet. Most of the athletes will not get to practice during the examinations and will need at least 20 to 25 days to get back on the track once again. The change in climate will also affect our performance in April. If the Education Department can organise trials to select Chandigarh’s team to participate in national school games during winter holidays, then why can’t they organise the most prestigious event of the year as per the schedule?” asked Prityansh, an athlete of a local school.
