Punjab Government to auction mining sites
Parmod Mehta

Dera Bassi, February 16
The Punjab Government has decided to auction mining sites in the Ghaggar river soon. The move will help residents to get sand and gravel easily.

The Mining Department of Mohali district has decided to auction the nine mining sites in the nearby Ghaggar on February 24 and 25.

The District mining officer, DP Bhagat, said the sites in the Ghaggar near Dera Bassi and Banur would be auctioned on February 24 and 25 to check the shortage of construction material.

Talking about getting environmental clearance from the Central Ministry of Environment, he said contractors concerned would get it on their own after auction.

Notably, many sites in the Ghaggar and other rivers of the state were lying blocked in the absence of the environment nod.

During the past one and a half years, sand mining has been stopped in the absence of environmental clearance. Various development projects have been lying incomplete due to the blocking of sand mining.

Sources said a truckload having 400 to 700 ft sand was available from Rs 12,000 to 21,000 and this material was being brought mostly from Himachal Pradesh.

The district administration has set up a stockyard at the Grain Market in Banur to ensure proper supply of sand and gravel on reasonable rates.

Deputy Commissioner Tejinderpal Singh Sidhu said with the setting up of the stockyard at Banur, people would get construction material on reasonable rates and illegal mining and black marketing would be stopped.

The Deputy Commissioner said any person could book construction material by contacting phone numbers 01762251446 and 8054635454,

Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 16
Spectators coming to witness the last home game of Jaypee Punjab Warriors, at the newly built hockey stadium of Mohali, had a tough time in finding canteen during the half-time interval. The non-availability of canteen left the spectators starving. “The organisers should have opened at least one eating stall inside the stadium. Due to late evening timings, refreshments for spectators should have been made available,” said Parminder Dhindsa, a spectator.

The 13,500 capacity stadium witnessed a total of four stalls (three of which were selling chips and one selling cold drinks). The spectators were not allowed to carry water bottles or cold-drink glasses inside the stadium. “Had it been summers, it would have been difficult to witness the match in such conditions. Now, the spectators are left with only one option and that is to eat chips,” stated Amayara, another spectator. She added, “With no other option in hand, we are eating chips. A single packet of these chips costs Rs 50 while a box of these worth Rs 60. Also, the snacks box contains only sweets and samosa but still costs Rs 50. Like other international stadiums, this hockey stadium should have a proper canteen with good options of eatables,” said Dev Mohini.

Running a successful home campaign, the Punjab Warriors team played five matches at their home ground of Mohali, with three wins, one draw and one defeat. The home team participated with great zeal and entertained the masses,” said a local hockey coach.

Olympian Balbir Singh Senior honoured

In a gesture of respect, the management of Jaypee Punjab Warrior presented a team’s jersey to hockey’s living legend Olympian Balbir Singh (Senior). Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 16
Owing it to bad health and an injured shoulder, Jeev Milkha Singh will not participate in the South African Open Golf Championship, scheduled to be held later, this year. The ace golfer, who recently participated in the Dubai Open Cup, is still recovering from bad viral and his prolonged right-shoulder injury. "After Dubai Open, I am still recovering from bad health and an injured shoulder. I will be playing at Louis Philippe Cup at Bombay Presidency Club and after that I will prefer to take rest prior to Malaysian and Korean Championship," said Singh. When asked about his change in plan of flying to Germany, after the Dubai Open Golf Championship, to get treatment of his prolonged right-shoulder injury, the ace golfer stated, “I am trying to recover through medication. Surgery is my last option. However, it will be tough to perform well in the upcoming competitions. However, I am looking forward to give my best. These days, I am on complete rest. The Spanish open, after Malaysian and Korean Championship, is among one of the most important tournaments. Hopefully, I will recover and perform well” said Jeev.

Jeev Milkha Singh was at the Chandigarh Golf Club, to inaugurate the new water hazard on the 6th hole of the course. In addition to this, he also launched the new golf cart hiring scheme. In this scheme 4 new "Club Car" Golf Carts will be made available for the members. The carts can be hired for 9 holes or for 18 holes. With this facility the members would not need to buy their own independent carts which turn out to be expensive. "Chandigarh Golf Club is my home ground and I am happy to see that the club is providing all facilities for local budding golfers. The new water hazard will also help the professional golfers like me," said Singh. "With introduction of this water hazard the existing hole no 6 will be more challenging and picturesque hole to play. To add a level of difficulty it was decided by the committee to have a water hazard which would give a risk reward option to the long hitters and professional golfers. The water hazard has a surface area of approximately 8,000 sq feet and is fed by tertiary water. The depth of the water hazard has been kept to a maximum of 5 feet to make it safe," said Bobby Sandhu, Captain of the Chandigarh Golf Club.

No plan to join AAP

During an interaction, Jeev Milkha Singh denied any possibility of joining the Aam Aadmi Party. According to him, the news of his family joining the AAP was just a rumour. “I have nothing to do with politics, neither is my father (Milkha Singh) interested in politics. It was a rumour,” said Singh.
