Farm summit: Diversification tops agenda
Chandigarh, February 15 The government agrees that the farmers did not want to move out of the wheat-rice cycle in the absence of minimum support price (MSP) for a majority of crops and vegetables, little storage facility and negligible agro processing units. The Centre had made a provision of Rs 500 crore in the Budget (2013-14) to facilitate crop diversification. The state government has already received Rs 224 core. SS Johl, eminent agricultural scientist, said: "Crop diversification is not possible till the government continues to provide free water and electricity to the farmers. The government should instead give subsidy to the farmers according to their landholdings." Kahan Singh Pannu, Special Secretary, Agriculture, said the broad areas linked with diversification were conservation of water and soil, increasing farmers' income and cost cutting. Meanwhile, incessant rain for the past two days spoiled arrangements for tomorrow's event "Kisan Sammelan" of the four-day Punjab Progressive Agriculture Summit, forcing the government to shift the venue. Now the event will take place at the recently inaugurated vegetable market at Phase 11 here instead of Fateh Burj at Chappar Chhiri village. The sammelan will kick off at 12 noon tomorrow after the inauguration of an exhibition at Chappar Chhiri by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at 11.30 am. The decision to shift the venue was taken by Badal after inspecting the site at Chappar Chhiri today. Pannu said the venue had been shifted only for tomorrow's event. "Technical sessions and exhibition will be held at Chappar Chhiri," he said. Pak delegation arrives Amritsar: An eight-member delegation led by Pakistan Punjab's Agriculture Minister Hurrukh Javed arrived here on Saturday to participate in the Punjab Progressive Agriculture Summit to be held in Mohali from February 16 to 18. Javed said the summit would help them solve farm-related problems more efficiently in Pakistan. ‘Summit anti-farmer’ The summit is an attempt by the state government to corporatise the farm sector. It wants to promote MNCs at the cost of farmers.— Umendra Dutt, kheti virasat mission |
Delhi Govt fall won’t affect SIT: Phoolka
Amritsar, February 15 At the launch of AAP’s ‘Jharu Chalao Yatra’ campaign in the state, Phoolka said, “The formation of the SIT was a valid decision of the Delhi government that was also approved by the Lieutenant Governor.” When asked why Arvind Kejriwal didn’t seek the people’s opinion before quitting, he said the Jan Lokpal Bill was a part of the party manifesto, adding that it was the first time that a CM had quit for a strong anti-corruption law. He rejected the charge that AAP took the exit route to cash in on the “sympathy” in the Lok Sabha elections as also re-election for Delhi Assembly. He said AAP would contest the elections in the state and announce candidates soon. Earlier, Phoolka kicked off the ‘Jharu Chalao Yatra’ campaign by paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the historic Company Bagh here. The rally culminated at the Jallianwalla Bagh after passing through main parts of the city. Sangrur: The district unit of AAP launched a nine-day rally here today. The rally would be taken out daily through various towns in the district till February 23. Dr AS Mann, AAP district convener, led the rally. Abohar: Scores of people joined AAP’s 'Jhadu Yatra'. The rally was led by Fazilka district president Kamal Khurana and executive member Ashok

Congress Hindu leaders seek more representation
Chandigarh, February 15 The party high command had set up the committee, led by Jalandhar MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee, to hear out party leaders, who were unhappy with the constitution of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). Other members of the committee are Laal Singh, Malti Thapar and KL Sharma. The committee had its last meeting today and will submit its report early next week. Among those who had a meeting with the committee were Rakesh Pandey, Ludhiana MLA, RR Bhardwaj, former Deputy Chairman of Punjab Planning Board, Vishnu Sharma, former Patiala Mayor, Aman Arora from Sangrur, KK Sharma from Bathinda, Jugal Kishore, Ashwani Sharma and Raman Behal. They said the Hindu community needed to be given due representation while allotting party tickets. The leaders said the SAD-BJP alliance gave 35 tickets to Hindu leaders in the last assembly elections and 21 of them won, whereas the Congress gave party tickets to only 23 leaders. They further said the Hindu community formed 38 per cent of the population. However, only two of the 14 vice-presidents and six of the 35 general secretaries were from the Hindu community. A member said there was a need to give adequate representation to leaders of certain communities while nominating PPCC office bearers. |
War of words on Bluestar intensifies
Chandigarh, February 15 He said Makkar had clearly stated that he had taken Badal into confidence before going ahead with the construction of the memorial. "Earlier he called me a liar when I exposed his claim of being in jail during the Operation Bluestar and now he is saying Makkar a liar," he said. PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa accused Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of abetting separatist forces and playing politics on memorials to slain terrorists. He alleged Badal had approved the construction of the Operation Bluestar Memorial inside the Golden Temple complex. In a statement issued in Amritsar, Bajwa said Badal's denial of his involvement on the matter had again "exposed his lie ". He said the SGPC was an extended arm of the SAD and Badal had been using this platform to promote his political interests. Meanwhile, addressing a press conference, senior SAD leaders Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Balwinder Singh Bhunder alleged Capt Amarinder Singh was among Indira Gandhi's key advisers on the Army operation. He (Capt) should also clarify his stand on the foreign help taken by the then Union Government to order the killing of its own people, they said. PPCC spokesperson Sukhpal Khaira asked the Akal Takht Jathedar to order a probe into the allegations and counter allegations between Badal and Makkar for allowing Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala on the memorial in the Golden Temple complex. Other Congress leaders, including Dera Baba Nanak MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Fatehgarh Churian MLA Tript Rajinder Bajwa and PPCC secretary Harpratap Singh Ajnala have sought a lie-detector test on Badal to know the truth on the matter. Nawanshahr: Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal alleged Capt Amarinder and Bajwa were raking up the issue ahead of the parliamentary elections to reap political benefits. After launching the Rahat scheme here, Sukhbir said the SAD had no intention to indulge in such negative politics. |
