Well those who say romance flies off the window the day you get married — don’t lose heart. There are ways to keep romance alive; the easiest is to watch romantic films together! Big on small screen
When Sakshi Tanwar reviews her career graph of the last fourteen years, she has absolutely no regrets. No qualms about not getting enough breaks in films like her male counterparts or using her popularity to switch her career. She is rather happy to be where she started — television, with Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki. She still gets to play the lead role and is one of the most-sought after actresses in the industry.
If in-between no reality shows have happened for her, that’s only because she consciously chose to stay away. “I am primarily an actor and that is how I want my fans to always know me. As for how I deal with different situations or how good I am at singing or dancing, is something I would always like to keep personal,” says the actor, who recently represented North India at the Largest Laundry Lesson, an event organised by Ariel to set the Guinness World Record in Mumbai. The event had her competing with actresses Raveena Tandon, Madhu and Rituparna Sengupta. Each of them was required to wash off stains of regional curries from clothes. For Sakshi, the challenge was to remove dal makhni stains. “It was a fun-filled event with 282 women participating in it. For me, it wasn’t work but a recreational activity.” As expected, women showered her with compliments for her acting in Bade Achche Lagte Hain. “I have been told many times that my character in the show is relatable.” Sakshi agress that a lot of content on Indian television is regressive but that adds variety. “There is something for everyone on the Indian TV. From reality shows to family shows to crime shows to youth-oriented shows.” As for not graduating to films, she says, “I never planned my career. Everything has happened by chance but once an offer comes my way, I ensure to give it my 100 per cent.” She hopes to continue with the same zeal. ashima@tribunemail.com

Punjabi to the core
Even as one gets introduced to Anne Murphy, a research scholar and professor at the University of British Columbia (UCB), Canada, in the department of Asian Studies, she magnifies the significance of the past. A research scholar of Sikhism, Anne teaches Punjabi at the UCB and her fluency with the language can put many Punjabis to shame!
In Chandigarh to deliver a talk on her book, The Materiality of the Past: History and Representation in Sikh Tradition, at the Panjab University, Anne talks about her association with the region. “I have visited India several times, not as a tourist, but as a research scholar. However, when I visited Punjab for the first time in 1998, I was overwhelmed with the richness of culture and tradition,” she says while confessing, “To me, Punjab was like a home…it was like apna Punjab.” Later, Anne made multiple trips to Punjab, which amounts to several years. “I am here again for about eight months to research on SEVA and modern Punjabi literature,” she shares, Talking about her book, which speaks volumes about her passion and understanding of the region, she says, “My book highlights the importance of the past, which is sacrosanct to the identity of Sikhism as a religion and it continues to influence its traditions even today. I have visited several gurdwaras across the region to trace the material culture in its architecture and objects,” she says. “It is important to trace the past to preserve the memory of any culture or tradition, especially nowadays when one is overloaded with information,” she adds. When you quiz her on what draws her to Punjab, she says, “I like the richness of the tradition, culture and even the language, which has a flavour of the folk and garnished with abundant literature. Also, the people here are so open and friendly. In most of the regions people talk about azadi, while in Punjab they talk about batwaara. In retrospect, Punjab derives its name from how it is placed geographically, which is the five rivers. But it's the people here, who make it truly interesting. And the language, of course, is magnificent,” she says. amarjot@tribunemail.com

Fun element
The cast of upcoming Punjabi movie Ishq Brandy, in Ludhiana on Wednesday to promote the flick, was a happy bunch, quite satisfied with their efforts. The movie revolves around the life of three friends played by Roshan Prince, Binu Dhillon and Alfaaz. The plot moves from Punjab to Mauritius, where they go to attend a function. Wamiqa Gabbi and Japji Khaira play the female leads. The confusion starts when the friends drink at night, do nasty things and forget about it altogether when they wake up. “The potion of romantic 'Ishq' and comic 'Brandy' will surely tickle the funny bone of the audience. I have also penned the lyrics of the songs in the movie; it is my second movie after Jatt Airways. The first one was a good learning experience as well,” says Alfaaz.
“The movie is a situational comedy and is sure to make you laugh,” adds Roshan Prince. Japji plays the role of a possessive fiancee opposite Alfaaz. “It was great fun shooting for the movie,” she says.

Less is more
Ashima Batish The label Nivedita Saboo stands for opulence and luxury. She is known for her expertise at surface ornamentation and use of bright colours. Here she makes a forecast for the coming spring summer season. What's in: Spring-summer is the season of light and airy fabrics, promising fluidity but minimal volume. This season has seen an overdose of fabric, especially in Anarkalis, so cutting down on volume would be a good option. Prints will be juxtaposed with solid colours. This time, the usual floral prints will be replaced by the quirky ones. Subtle elements of sportswear will be incorporated in fabrics like soft voils, light chanderis and linens. What's out: Volume, anarkalis, velvet and other heavy fabrics will be done away with. Even large embroideries will be out. Instead, surface ornamentation will become a rage in the middle of the year. Colour count: Sunny colours will be popular, beginning from soft yellow, orange, peach and coral. Since, neons have been in for two seasons now, this time we have the paler, softer shades. Neons won't be completely out. We will have them as accents and trims to make for an interesting contrast with paler shades. But don't mistake faded shades for paler ones. They are a dull alternative. Party couture: Anything chic and minimal would do for a summer party. Layers in sheer fabric would be a great option. Or try an opaque tube dress layered with chiffon frills. This will add drama to an otherwise simple tube dress. Leading in design: I like Rajesh Pratap Singh for his knowledge and use of textures and prints. When it comes to embroidery, my pick is Anamika Khanna. Also Sabyasachi has done innovation with the techniques of embroidery. All of them have strengthened India's position on the International fashion scenario. Dressed to the Nines: This year belongs to Deepika Padukone not only for her box office exploits, also for Red Carpet dressing up. She nailed it on every occasion, without going over the top. Her choice of gowns and dresses was perfect. On the Indian fashion industry: We are doing well not just in India, also around the world. Fashion followers abroad have started demanding creations from Indian designers. Globally, we are making more business than before. All we need to do is make consolidated effort to further raise our production and marketing standards. |

A friend indeed!
Divya Dutta I took that call even though the number was unfamiliar. The voice on the other side said Abhishek Bachchan wanted to talk to me. And I heard his warm, affectionate voice inviting me to his house for a party. There's something real about Abhishek. That glint in his eyes is very naughty... that smile is very friendly. The first time I met him was in their house on Holi where he lifted me and threw me in the colour tank and said, "Hi, I am Abhishek." Yes. That's him. Who loves to laugh and make people around him laugh. We first shot for Delhi 6. We used to play cricket after the shoot. I and the boys. But I enjoyed. And we gymmed with the same trainer. What we had in common was playing pranks on others. So, we used to pick on some unsuspecting co-actor and pull him up. Once on a day off I got a few glasses of lassi from a popular joint in Jaipur. Abhi loved it and said, "That's it?" I felt terrible for not getting more but he flashed his warm smile and made a call. Within minutes, a hundred glasses of lassi were brought for the entire unit. That's Abhishek! He sometime fondly calls me Jayaji as we are the same height! After the film completed, we kept in touch now and then. He saw Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and tweeted about me. I felt so overwhelmed with his straight from the heart compliments! I met him recently at Zee Cine Awards. He was hosting. Even though the show went on till late, he kept everyone in splits. As I was giggling away, in the break time he came towards me and said, "Abhi toh show half way through hai, don't be too happy." Everyone laughed. As I went up to pick my award for BMB, Abhishek like a true gentleman walked me down! He is dependable as a friend. Endearing, warm, helpful and humble to the core, reflecting the great lineage he comes from. What do I say! You are the sweetest co-actor Abhishek! A very happy belated Birthday! Asin eyeing meaty roles
Asin is tired of being part of 100-crore projects and insists that she will only do films where she is offered meaty roles. The 28-year-old actress worked with Bollywood A-listers including Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn among others in her six year old career. Asin, who was last seen 2012 film Khiladi 786, wants to add performance-oriented roles in her resume. "I have been very lucky in Bollywood that I have got the chance to work with established actors in such a short span of time. I am happy that most of films did good business and either set or broke records at the box-office. "I am tired of starring in those films where I am being a part just for the sake of it. In the near future, I have decided on that I will take up only those projects where my character has a scope to perform. From now onwards, doing a film just the sake of being seen onscreen is not my criteria," Asin said in an interview. Asin is currently shooting her next project All is Well with Abhishek Bachchan. The film is directed by Oh My God helmer Umesh Shukla and will reunite Asin with Bachchan after Bol Bachchan. "We are at the second schedule of the film. I am a big fan of Umesh after watching Oh My God and it's really fun to work with him. I am working with Abhishek again but in this film we don't share the brother-sister relationship. "Rishiji (Rishi Kapoor) is also a part of this film and we are very fond of each other," said Asin. Having started her career in Malayalam films at a tender age, Asin also tried her luck in Telugu and Tamil films and gave many hits. But the actress said she had never followed any plan or agenda for her career. "I had no plan or agenda. I have just been lucky. I am happy with my journey in the Indian film industry," she said. When asked about Anushka Sharma's recent comments where she denied getting a lip job, Asin said she would not like to comment on it because it was a personal matter. Asked if she would ever go for a plastic surgery to enhance her beauty, Asin said she is happy with the way she looks. "It's a very personal choice and subjective too. But I won't ever go for it because I am contended with the way God has created me. I don't want to alter anything on my body." —PTI |

Ajay Devgn to replace Salman Khan?
Actor Salman Khan has successfully hosted several seasons of controversial game show Bigg Boss. However, the 48-year-old star was reported to be annoyed with the responses he got from the social network sites during the last season - Bigg boss 7.
Several blogs accused the actor of undue favouritism and partiality for certain contestants. It was mainly aimed at his behaviour and the advantages that he gave to Tanishaa Mukherjee. The runner up was sister in law to Ajay Devgn who is reputed to enjoy very good rapport with Salman. It was reported that Ajay and Kajol were not happy with Tanisha for entering the show. When she was finally defeated by Gauhar Khan, the rumours died a natural death. However, Salman was disgusted with the criticisms that poured from the social media sites and has reportedly decided not to host the next season of the show. Several names were floating around as the host with Ranbeer Kapoor and Ranvir Singh emerging as strong contenders. However, it has now been confirmed that the producers of the show have approached Ajay Devgn to host Bigg Boss 8. The actor is not ready to commit to the project. When asked whether he wants to play the host to the popular show, Ajay replied, "I really don't know. I cannot comment on that — maybe I will or maybe not. I am not sure. Salman does it so well... he is watchable. I don't know if I can pull it off like Salman. I have not seen all the episodes, but a little bit here and there," he said. In addition to working together in films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and London Dreams, Salman also appeared in a cameo in Ajay Devgn starrer Son of Sardar and the two are known to be good friends. "I don't believe that rivals cannot be friends. All of us are friends, most of us at least. Salman, Sanjay Dutt, and me are very close. Earlier, we used to meet on each other's sets. Now it's become more professional, but we have a great rapport. Whenever we need each other, we stand for each other," added Ajay. Let's see if he accepts the offer or not.

The 19-year-old singer was recently arrested for driving under the influence, an incident that capped almost a year of wild antics for Beiber that include egging his neighbour, spitting on his fans from balcony and getting caught visiting strip clubs and brothels. In the company of Gunday
Priyanka Chopra is a powerhouse of energy and talent and nothing can bring her down. She talks about Gunday, her co-stars, family and more.
Period touch Gunday with Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor is special because it's a period film, a genre I wanted to explore. Also, it has a good storyline and has a young feel to it. Centre of attention They are far more experienced than I was in my first few films. I was very young when I started doing films. Arjun Kapoor has literally grown up in the industry while Ranveer Singh has also been associated with films since young age. So, they are not exactly newbies, which is a plus point for them. Even though I have more experience than them as far as films are concerned, they didn't really need my guidance. Thankfully, I wasn't the butt of their jokes but definitely the centre of their attention (laughs). I was one of the boys in their fun and games. We also worked in extreme conditions like shooting outdoors in the scorching summer of Kolkata. Nothing compares… A lot is being made about the golden bodysuit that I have worn for a cabaret song in the film being inspired from JLo. A stupid comparison because it's the basic skin embellishment that an actress or entertainer would wear for a dance sequence. It's like the little black dress which everyone wears. Being compared to JLo may sound flattering, but I would rather be known as my own person. Nothing compares to being your own self, anyways. Family support I haven't had the time to catch-up with Parineeti's latest release though there were three trials. I have been super busy with the promotion of my upcoming film. But I am proud of what she does in every film. It's dumb to even insinuate a rivalry between us. We are family. Period. Being Mary The biopic on Mary Kom is shaping up well. In fact, we have a shoot schedule by the end of the month. It's a film that is not just limited to the great achiever but a story of every girl who cannot be restricted and is capable of doing much more than what is expected of her.
Positive response Rajat Kapoor has got a great response to the trailer of his film Ankhon Dekhi and he is happy that he made the film at the right time, when audiences are open to cinema like this.
Family dinner Yami Gautam and Ali Zafar star together in Total Siyapaa. Yaami is a Punjabi and Chandigarh is her hometown. Ali Zafar is also a Punjabi from Pakistan. Her family has invited him to Chandigarh for dinner and he is more than happy to oblige.

Alia’s Berlin connection...
Director Imtiaz Ali's next film Highway is going to be premiered at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival and its lead actress Alia's father Mahesh Bhatt says she has a unique connection with the city.
"Alia has a unique connection with Berlin. It's just incredible that her film Highway is premiering in Berlin. Many years ago, in 1929 in fact, Alia's grandmother was born in Berlin. Yes, she's German. Sadly she had to leave Berlin in 1937. Alia's great grandfather, was running an underground newspaper against Hitler. He was found out and imprisoned for two years. So Alia's grandmother and her mother walked across the border to Czechoslovakia and found sanctuary from persecution as refugees in England!" the 65-year-old filmmaker tweeted. "The spirit of rebellion which is embedded in Highway is a part of Alia's legacy. It comes from her great grandfather. Karl Hoelzer, Alia's great grandfather dared to take on the Nazi regime in his own small way and paid a very heavy price for it. All art and all cinema of rebellion are intended to ignite rage against the oppressor. I'm certain Imtiaz Ali's Highway will do that!! But little did Alia's grandma Gertrude know that her tragic story would have a happy ending. All forces of oppression will be defeated by the indomitable spirit of human kind and life, not death, will have the last word," he added. The film, which also stars Randeep Hooda, releases on February 21.

Welcoming the Lakshmi
Nagesh Kukunoor's hard-hitting drama Lakshmi, which is based on human trafficking, is finally all set to release on March 21. The film was supposed to release last month but it was delayed as the makers were waiting for an approval from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film was honoured with the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) recently.
Talking about the film, Kukunoor says, "With Lakshmi, I am very clear about one thing that irrespective of the box-office result I want the movie to have a shelf life. And with a reasonable degree of confidence, it seems like it will. I've got offers from NGOs, schools and colleges for screenings." Lakshmi narrates the story of a 14-year-old girl kidnapped and sold for prostitution; her refusal to give up hope and her courageous stand against her oppressors.

Screen bonding
Arjun Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra had a great time while shooting for Gunday and they bonded off the sets too. The boys dragged PC for her ex-boyfriend Shahid Kapoor's movie Phata Poster Nikla Hero in Kolkata and they all had a good time watching it.
Fight it like Vidyut
Vidyut Jamwal turned a teacher for the female students of a few colleges in Mumbai. The actor was keen on teaching them some moves to defend themselves in various scenarios and the crowds were enthusiastic and encouraging.
Delayed action Mohit Suri's love triangle with Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi and Rajkumar Rao has been delayed by a few months because Emraan is busy looking after his son Ayan, who has just been operated for a
tumour.
Vir writes his script Director Saket Choudhary approached Vir Das to work in his movie Shaadi Ke Side Effects but Vir Das said that he would write the character himself and wanted a free reign to do whatever he wished. Saket agreed!
Mentoring Pooja Vipul Shah introduced Pooja Chopra in Commando last year and it seems he is still "inspired" by her and has taken it upon himself to educate her in the movies.

Stars on Boggie Woogie!
"This has been the most entertaining episode in 16 years," claimed judges Jaaved, Ravi and Naved when the star cast of Gunday took the entertainment level on Boogie Woogie to new heights. The trio danced, mimicked and took a dig at each other, leaving the audience in splits.
Right from the beginning, the trio kept everyone on their feet with their hilarious antics. While Ranveer teased Priyanka by saying, Bachhi ne tujhse acha perform kiya hai, when Bebechana performed her number Ram chahe leela, Arjun pulled Ranveer's leg by saying, Beta tu badi cheez hai jisne Ranveer ki bolti band kardi" when Preetjyot asked him questions about his hairstyle. The trio even showed off some dance moves. Ranveer grooved with Preetjyot on Ainwayi ainwayi while Arjun showed off his signature moves on the song Hua chokra jawan re with Aryan Patra. All three set the stage on fire when the song Tune maari entriyaan resonated on the sets and shook a leg with Mumtaaz. This is not all! In a competition that all Priyanka fans would die for, the talented beauty challenged Ranveer and Arjun for a competition to twirl the ball like contestant Abhishek Sinha. The winner had the golden chance of winning a kiss from the lady herself. But to their misfortune, none could beat Abhishek and the young one soon got a peck on his cheek from Priyanka Chopra.
