Mind that matters
Canadian politician Ruby Dhalla has many dimensions to her personality and she shines through them all
Jasmine Singh

If you probably meet her without any back up of her credentials, there is no way you could guess that she could be a politician. A leading model or a super model is what would make of her to be, certainly at the first glimpse. Ruby Dhalla can indeed pass of as someone from the entertainment world, till she starts to talk about herself, her journey so far and the day things were never the same.

For those who you who are not clued much into politics, Ruby Dhalla is a Canadian politician. She represented the riding of Brampton-Springdale in the Canadian House of Commons from 2004 to 2011 as a member of the Liberal Party. Dhalla and British Columbia Conservative MP Nina Grewal were the first Sikh women to serve in the Canadian House of Commons.

Politics, what is a pretty girl like her doing in this hypocrite field, as we like to call it. With her perfectly manicured hands, a shimmery tail paint stuck to her nails, Ruby puts her hands through her long hair and smiles. "All this started when I was 10 years of age. It was the time when I unknowingly wrote a letter to Indira Gandhi asking her to do something about the atrocities on Sikhs back in India. You wouldn't believe, I got a letter back from her explaining what all was happening. She also invited me to meet her," Ruby says with fond remembrance. The question still stays… why politics. Ruby cuts the long story short…Enrolling in a course that got her to meet the minister of her constituency, to helping him in campaigns while she was pursuing her doctorate to being offered a ticket to run for a constituency. "It was May 8, 2004 when I was offered to run for constituency and things have never been the same," she says.

Ruby slips the screen of her mobile showing the pictures of the launch of her designer label Ruby Red in Delhi last year. She is bundled up with energy that she utilises to the hilt. "Each moment is important; I live life to the fullest. I believe if god has equipped me to do something, if he has plans for it, then I must follow it. I would be launching the label in Punjab as well," says Ruby who also runs an NGO Dreams For You that has a chapter in Punjab. The NGO works for women who have been victims of fraud marriages. "We provide women with information, legal help, empower them and create public awareness on the same issue."

Dealing with all the challenges in her journey, developing a thick skin, speaking her mind and most important of all dealing with the hypocrisy of politics, Ruby shares that there is one thing that she still has to. She laughs as she pulls her hair back, "to create a balance in my life and probably catch up on a good sleep." Ruby is visiting Punjab for certain events.

Joint venture
Punjabi singers' new found way of performing on stage-collaborations- is a hit and audience is loving it
Jasmine Singh

If there is one thing that can get the Punjabis together after a brawl 'or a fight in the university campus,' it is the live shows, the newer version of akharaas. The ever-green Gurdas Maan would and still enigmatically binds the audience of thousands with his electrifying performance; Jazzy B can set the stage on fire single-handedly. And then we gradually see from single performers to a group or let's just say a band of popular Punjabi singers performing. So, now the audience gets to see some of their favourite singers perform in a group. Even when they are nothing close to the old and famous Westlife, Boyzone, Backstreet Boys, our Punjabi collaborations or bands are redefining live shows. A pretty recent trend though, it has found fancy with the singers, who definitely get additional perks from these on-stage collaborations!
(Top) Nishawn Bhullar and J Star (below) Alfaaz, Yo Yo Honey Singh and Money Aujla of Mafia Mundeer
(Top) Nishawn Bhullar and J Star (below) Alfaaz, Yo Yo Honey Singh and Money Aujla of Mafia Mundeer

Here we comin’

Taadhi's have always performed as a group, holding the stage and entertaining the audiences. And almost 2-3 years back, a new band of singers, lyrists and music composers joined hands to form Mafia Mundeer that immediately caught the fancy of audience and other singers as well. Yo Yo Honey Singh, Alfaaz and Money Aujla, the trio rocked at all stage shows. A new band was thus formed. "The concept of bands or on-stage collaborations was initiated by Taadhi. Our group can be termed as coming together of like minded people though," shares Money Aujla. The group performs together as much as they can.

If this was starting of a new trend, well then it was picked up by other young singers who saw much advantage in it. The duo Jassi Gill and Babbal Rai perform under the name-Jassi and Babbal. "We perform together, which gives the audience a lot of variety," says Babbal, who doesn't feel in calling it a band or giving it some 'official' name.

Adding on

These on-stage collaborations are surely a treat for the audience, giving them a lot of variety in the songs. Punjabi singer-actor Nishawn Bhullar of Hummer fame who performs with another singer J Star explains it objectively. "Popular Punjabi singers like Gurdas Maan have done live shows and kept the audiences glued to their seats till the end. The newer lot of singers however has a long way to go. They do not have a large collection of their songs that will last them long on the stage, live." Unlike the boy bands that we know of, the Punjabi bands do not conform to any strict rule of performing -strictly- together. "This is precisely why we don't give a name to our group since we also perform individually and when we want," shares Babbal Rai. It is not only the singers, who see an advantage in forming groups, the organizers are also benefited. Babbal goes on, "On an event, if you see two or three good singers performing together, it is obviously a treat."

Writing her book, Sunrays for Friday, Priya Tandon shares with us her inspirations and aspirations

While a painter spreads the colours on the canvas, the reds, the greens and the blues stick to the hands as well. "My hands get soiled while I paint and the same holds true when I am writing a book. During the process, I end up discovering so much more about myself and my life in general," shares Priya Tandon, who is currently writing her next book, Sunrays For Friday. She has already written Sunrays For Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday....

Priya softly smiles during the entire conversation as she sifts through the pages of her previous books. Each of the 52 stories that she writes are carefully supported with an illustration that she does herself. Her stories stem from her experiences and things around. "I don't have to sit in a quiet place for inspiration, it is everywhere around me. Sometimes, I have been taken in by what my helper has to say, things and incidents around always inspire me," she shares.

Priya finds solace in writing and painting. In addition to this, these creative arts have also helped her form a strong bond and understanding with her husband, Sanjay Tandon, president BJP, Chandigarh chapter. STAR TRACK
A direct take
Karan Johar talks about the latest season of Koffee with Karan, upcoming movies, and more

Coffee Season 4

I know that Shah Rukh Khan is not on the season yet but he is a big part of my life...so what if he is not there on the show? SRK, Aditya Chopra and my father along with Yash Ji have made me what I am. I will happily sweep the floors of YRF or Red Chillies if needed. They know how much I love them.

Shuddhi on hold

Shuddhi has been delayed yet again due to Hrithik Roshan's health issues which pushed the shooting of Bang Bang and have affected Shuddhi as well. It will take six months or a year to roll.

Change in caste

She is the sibling I never had. I feel terrible for her. I cannot expect her to wait indefinitely for Shuddhi. There might be casting changes in Shuddhi closer to the time it goes on the floors.

Dharma group players

All is well at Dharma Productions. I do not play favourites between my directors. We are group players. We are all part of a family and we do not function like a studio. Though Gori Tere Pyar Mein failed, I am the one responsible for it and Punit Malhotra is already working on his next film for Dharma.

My upcoming films

We have 2 States and the remake of Vettai. I am also excited about Hasee Toh Phasee as it is an unconventional romantic comedy. I am going to direct again by the end of the year and I wish to work with Salman Khan and Aamir Khan.

Ranveer, Deepika are just friends

Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone are painting the town red with their love but the couple is not ready to admit their relationship in public at this moment. Ranveer Singh admits that Deepika holds a significance position in his life but at the same time maintains that they are "just friends". He talks about his closeness to Deepika.

Special importance

Deepika holds a special significance in my life. She is somebody I respect and admire a lot, somebody whom I have grown close to. She is an awesome person, she is somebody for whom I have great amount of admiration.

Young Turks

We are friends. We go out and hang out. I go out and hang out with lot of other people as well, but they are not as famous as her... she is a very cool person to hang out with, I thoroughly enjoy her company. We hang out like any other youngsters who are friendly with each other. I have school friends, Arjun Kapoor... and assistant directors etc with whom I go out. I am protective about all my friends.

Laugh away

I am usually a fun loving person and I say most of the things in a jest. Sometimes I get in trouble, but over a period of time, I think people now realise that most of the things I say are in jest. They are used to it. I would be just the way I am. For me if you are a certain way, people are going to pass a judgement, so be the way you are," he said, adding that "...I don't like getting serious in any situation, I like to joke, I like to have fun and keep the atmosphere light and make people laugh."

Shuddhi on hold

It has been quite a long time Karan Johar's mega project Shuddhi is making the news but nothing has been finalised yet. The project has been delayed for indefinite time and now it is heard that Shuddhi has been shelved. The film was suppose to bring together Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor after 10 years

Kareena had said, "I don't know when it will happen. I haven't met Karan Johar and Hrithik is busy doing a movie titled Bang Bang. Whenever the movie goes to the floors, I will decide whether to do it." Even Karan Johar said that he doesn't know where the movie is going. "Shuddhi may take six months, even a year, to go on the floors. We are still working on the schedule. Hrithik Roshan's health issues, which lead to Bang Bang being pushed forward, has had its share of repercussions. Shuddhi stands indefinitely delayed and right now I don't know where it is going," said Karan.

It was earlier reported that Karan Johar has approached Deepika Padukone for the project and thrown Kareena out of Shuddhi due to the Bebo's falling career graph. Kareena's last few films badly doomed at the box-office. Our sources suggest that now he is waiting for Kareena to walk out of the project. Only if she wants to, but will she? Guess only time will tell.

Bipasha in, Jacqueline out!

Jacqueline's packed schedule has paved the way for Bipasha Basu to be a part of Temptation Reloaded world tour. Every year, Moranis hold the event around the world with noted Bollywood stars and it has been a huge hit. This year too the event is planned but as the tour was pushed behind.

Sajid Nadiadwala's Kick schedule clashes with Temptation Reloaded tour and hence Jacqueline is left with no choice but to walk out of the event. Bipasha Basu has been stepped in to fill up Jacqueline's replacement. The event was supposed to kick-start in Australia last year but got cancelled and now it is scheduled to take place in Malaysia this year.

When contacted, Mohammad Morani confirmed the news. "Jacqueline had allotted her dates to us but we are letting her shoot for Kick. Meanwhile, Bipasha Basu is joining us for the tour," he said, adding that the final line up includes Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukherji, Bipasha Basu, Honey Singh, Arijit Singh and Meiyang Chang.

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala, who will make debut as a director with Kick, says, "Jacqueline will be shooting with us at a stretch now. We plan to wrap up in May."

Anushka in love?

Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli are very serious about each other. The actress accompanied the cricketer to his match in Auckland, New Zealand. They hung out together and Anushka even posed with fans.

Joint narration

Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh got a joint narration for Gunday with background music that Ali Abbas Zafar had already worked on. It is the first time that such a thing has happened in the industry.

Winner this week

Hasee Toh Phasee has got unanimously glowing reviews, Heartless has got mixed to bad reviews and the same for Babloo Happy Hai and Ya Rab. Hasee Toh Phasee will emerge like the winner this week.

Doc Talk

Moles on the skin are common occurrence; nearly everyone has at least a few. As per its location, colour and size in some people a mole may add to the beauty while in others it tends to appear ugly. The moles become worrisome when they suddenly enlarge in size or rapidly increase in number.

Moles are often brownish in colour, although some may be darker or skin-coloured. They can be flat or raised, smooth or rough and some have hair growing from them. Moles are usually circular or oval with a smooth edge. Moles form due to collections of skin cells and they may be superficial or deep depending upon the extent of their depth into the skin.

Moles can change in number and appearance. Some increase over time, often without one noticing it. They also sometimes respond to hormonal changes, for example during:

* Pregnancy – when they may get slightly darker

* Teenage years – when they increase in number

* Older age – when they may become rough and enlarged from 40 to 50 years of age onwards

When do moles develop?

Some moles are present at birth. However, most moles can develop anytime during the first 30 years of life. People with fair skin often have more moles than people with darker skin.

Most moles have a genetic cause and are inherited, this is often the case with people who have a lot of moles. If one has spent a lot of time in the sun, there are higher chances of having an increased number of small moles.

Moles can occur anywhere on your body, but most happen on the back, legs, arms and face.

If you notice any changes to your moles, do not ignore. Changes to a mole may be an early indication of a type of skin cancer in some called melanoma.

Cancerous moles

While most moles are benign (non-cancerous), in rare cases they can develop into melanoma. Melanoma is a form of skin cancer.

Melanomas usually appear as a dark, fast-growing spot where there was not one before, or a pre-existing mole that changes size, shape or colour and bleeds, itches or reddens.

Things to look for include:

* Moles with uneven colouring – most moles only have one or two colours, but melanomas have lots of different shades.

* Moles with an uneven or ragged edge–moles are usually circular or oval with a smooth border.

* Bleeding, itching, red, inflamed (swollen) or crusty moles.

* Moles that get a lot bigger – most moles are no bigger than the width of a pencil.

A helpful way to remember what to look for is to use the ABCDE method.

* A – asymmetry

* B – border irregularity

* C – colour change

* D – diameter

* E – elevated (raised) or enlarged

If you have a lot of moles, it’s important to take extra care in the sun. You can help protect yourself from sun damage if you:

* Stay in the shade when the sun is at its strongest (between 11am and 3 pm)

* Cover up with clothes, full sleeve cottons, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

* Use a high-factor sunscreen (minimum SPF15) and reapply it regularly, particularly after swimming.

Your doctor may recommend that an atypical mole be removed for strict medical reasons, or you may decide to have a mole removed for cosmetic reasons. Either way, mole removal is a relatively low-risk procedure. The surgery itself may result in light scarring, depending on the type of mole that is removed. The two most widely used forms of mole removal are excision followed by stitches and excision with cauterization or laser without stitches. The first method involves cutting off the mole and resealing the wound with stitches. In the second method, a laser or radiofrequency machine burns away the mole, cauterizing, or sealing, the wound as the mole is removed. Both methods are outpatient procedures.

Master Chef
The carrot crusade!
Kandla Nijhowne

My crusade to feed my kids all possible vegetables was “mission impossible” indeed! It led me to narrate a lot of encouraging stories to them about the goodness of greens. My preachings about carrots being good for eyesight were being taken rather seriously. When we grate, cook and ‘bhuno’ our carrots into a gaajar halwa, let’s not fool ourselves we're deriving much nutrition from the carrots in there. Even a carrot cake is not exactly a health food, but it’s certainly less cooked than the former. The trade mark spicy taste comes from the use of cinnamon powder. Raisins and walnuts are delightful but optional.

Spicy carrot cake

* 1½ cups refined oil

* 2 cups grain sugar

* 4 eggs

* 2 tsp vanilla essence

* 2 cups maida

* 2 teaspoons baking soda

* 2 tsp baking powder

* ½ tsp salt

* 2 tsp cinnamon powder

* 3 cups grated carrots

*1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

* ½ cup raisins

* Frosting (optional)

* ½ cup butter

* 750 gm yoghurt

* 3 cups icing sugar

* grated zest of one lemon

Method

* Sieve together the maida, soda, cinnamon, baking powder and salt.

* Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C)

* Hang the curds in a muslin square.

* Beat the oil, sugar and vanilla till well blended.

* Mix in the maida and other dry ingredients, folding with minimal strokes.

* Scatter the grated carrots over the mix and fold in.

* Fold in raisins and walnuts. Pour batter into cake tin.

* Bake for 30-45 minutes.

* Allow it to cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then turn out on to a wire rack.

* To prepare frosting, combine butter, hung curds, icing sugar, lemon zest and vanilla. Beat until the mixture is smooth .

Frost the cooled cake. Voila!

Value addition
The exhibition of handlooms and handicrafts of Madhya Pradesh at Lajpat Rai Bhawan is a treat for those who love handwoven fabrics
Amarjot Kaur

The state that is known to nurture its cultural heritage in the glorious past of the Mesolithic period, Madhya Pradesh, has to its credit some of the most valuable and diverse creative forms of art, including paintings, handicrafts, and handloom. In their endeavour to promote regional art, handloom and handicrafts, Mrignayanee, a non-profit organisation of MP, organised an exhibition at the Lajpat Rai Bhawan, Sector 15, where on display, were the colourful range of chanderi, masheshwari and tusser suits and sarees.

As one walks around the gallery, which seems to reflect the vibrancy of the state’s culture, the first stall welcomes with its range of beautiful indigo block prints. The man behind the stall is Madan Lal Jharia, who says, “I am the forth generation artisan involved in the trade of Chanderi and maheshwari suits and sarees. We quote a minimal price since Mrignayanee does not aim at making any profit.” While he details that maheshwari is a cloth that is weaved in one strand of cotton thread and one strand of silk, he swears by the quality of his product, “India is costly, China is cheap, but no guarantee!”

Talking about the genuineness of the products at the exhibition, one is treated to the beautiful tie and dye designs on bed sheets and bed covers. Also, you will spot a colourful collection of batik designs. “There is a lot of effort that it takes to get the tie and die and batik prints. The weavers and artists have been following the age old traditions at the Narmada river belt,” mentions KS Mishra, officer-in-charge, Mrignayanee. He adds, “However, at times an artisan does not get his due since there are a lot of mediators and there is a tax on handicrafts and stitched garments.” Mishra also laments the fact that for them to host an exhibition in Chandigarh, they have to pay a certain amount in advance. “We have to hire a lawyer as there is a certain sum of money that we give to the Government and that becomes very harrowing. Also, it restricts several handicraft artists, since their products are taxable, and the city does not get a variety of choice,” he avers.

The exhibition showcases 5000 varieties of Chanderi in both traditional and contemporary prints. However, different kinds of jute hammocks, priced at the range of Rs 1200 are quiet a catch. Meanwhile, Mohammad Avrar of Paras Bunkar, MP, says while showing a saree worth Rs 70,000, “It takes almost a year for an artisan to weave one saree and the products that we have here are all genuine handloom products.” The exhibition also has kundan, and metal jewellery, which starts at Rs 50 and goes up Rs 60,000. Also, it has on display the Gaj Lakshmi deep from Tikam Garh bought by the national awarde Panna Lal Soni available at Rs 80,000.

On till Feburary 14.

Together we ride

Chandigarh’s bullet riders club, ‘Road Survivors’ organizes Ride For Equality, a special initiative to protest against the racial discrimination in all its manifestations. The death of North Eastern student Nido Taniam in New Delhi has left people angry and concerned. The riders club is extending their support to the Brotherhood Against Racial Discrimination (BARD) campaign of Brotherhood of Bulleteers Motorcycling Consortium (BOBMC), which is a central body of all bullet clubs in India.

“As riders, we have best buddies in all parts of the country, from the far flung South to the deserts of Thar, from the barren lands of Kutch to the lush green of Tawang. And so, when a fellow Indian loses his life due to prejudices of fellow countrymen, our hearts bleed,” says Zubin Mehta, a well-known theatre personality and a member of Road Survivors.

The BOBMC is organising the ‘Ride For Equality’ among other clubs of the country, including Indiethumpers (Mumbai), Wanderlust (Nagpur), Madbulls (Chennai), RERAM (Arunachal and Meghalaya), apart from Road Survivors (Chandigarh).— TNS

What a tease!

Post the leap in Saath Nibhana Saathiya, Mohammad Nazim aka Aham has been wearing suits to suit his new look. Apparently, people on the sets have been teasing him and pulling his leg as the new look is quite stylish from his earlier one. Nazim has been taking all of it in his stride.

Knotty Affair

While he's getting married on his show, Jee Le Zara, Ruslaan Mumtaz is also gearing up for his own wedding. He will marry his long time girlfriend Nirali Mehta on February 14 in court and later have a traditional wedding on March 2, 2014.

Up for adventure!

After winning Bigg Boss 7, Gauahar Khan has taken up another reality show, Khatron Ke Khiladi. She admits to being scared of performing stunts, but wants challenge herself. She talks to us about the show and her boyfriend, Kushal Tandon.

Why did you accept this show right after Bigg Boss?

As an actor, I have done acting and dancing, but now, I want to try my hand at stunts. Also, this is completely a new experience for me, as I have never done adventurous things. This show is based on an international format and it is a challenge for me. I thought that I would not be able to do Bigg Boss, but I did and won it too, I like to do something different, that challenges my abilities.

What are your fears?

I am not going to reveal that, as the makers will ensure to use them in the show (laughs). I have done enough reality shows now to know that its not wise to lay all my cards out on the table.

Aren't two reality shows back to back a bit much?

I do things that I enjoy, not just for money or fame. I believe in breaking the norms. When people tell me I shouldn't do things, I say watch me. Khatron Ke Khiladi will air in March end, so there will be a gap for the audiences.

What about films?

I would love to do films as that is where my heart is. I have a release mid year and I hope to sign some other stuff too.

Was it your idea to have Kushal in the show?

No. The channel offered it to us together and while he was still contemplating on what to do, I gave him a nudge. — HRM

Not many know that Shenaz is a Pakistani, who hails from London. All thanks to her on-screen character, that gave her a chance to not only see the wedding, but to be a part of it also. Shenaz says, "I'm looking forward to the up and coming episodes as I have always wanted to experience an Indian wedding. We are having so much fun shooting for the wedding sequence, which is a fusion of North and South wedding. I guess I'm really lucky to witness both, in one go (smiles)."
