What’s in a spelling
Name of Abhinav Bindra spelled wrongly at the shooting range named after him
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 5
Much to the embarrassment of the City Beautiful and UT Administration, ace shooter Abhinav Bindra's name has been spelled wrongly as 'Abhinav Bindr', at the recently inaugurated, 10m air gun shooting range at the Chandigarh Lake Sports Club.

Notably, the range has been named after Olympic gold medallist international shooter Abhinav Bindra as ‘Abhinav Shooting Gallery.’ The range was inaugurated by the Punjab Governor and UT administrator UT Shivraj V Patil on January 6.

A board of ‘Safety Rules’ installed at the right side, at the entrance of the shooting range, carries names of all the Indian shooters who had brought laurels to the nation in various international competitions. Being a local lad and Olympic gold medallist, the ‘pride of nation’ chart carries Abhinav Bindra’s name on the top. And the wrongly spelled name catches disapproving eyes in a fraction of a second.

Abhinav, a well-known figure in the world of shooting, has made the city proud by winning a gold medal in the Beijing Olympic Games 2008. He won the top honour in the 10m air rifle event. “This is really an embarrassment. On the one hand, the shooting range has been named after Abhinav Bindra and on the other, his name has been wrongly spelled. The authorities, who are keen to just come up with new projects, should also concentrate on ground reality,” said Shivam, a shooter. No official was available to comment on the issue.
