Former Union Railway Minister and sitting Congress MP Pawan Kumar Bansal, who was earlier targeted by the Opposition on Railgate, is now facing a similar attack from local party leaders.

Day after, cop suspended
Chandigarh, January 29
A day after a UT traffic constable was caught on the wrong foot as he allegedly punched a 75-year-old man in the chest, senior police officials today suspended the errant constable and transferred him to the Police Lines. A show-cause notice was also issued to a traffic sub-inspector, who was in charge of the traffic vehicle.

Automated parking lots fleece visitors
Chandigarh, January 29
The city’s automated paid parking lots in Sector 17, which were inaugurated by the former Mayor amid much fanfare, have been resorting to manual disbursal of parking slips as the automated barriers are not being put to use. The visitors are even overcharged by parking attendants.

PGI calls for cadaver donation
Chandigarh, January 29
The PGIMER today called for cadaver donation for research purpose in different departments. The institute has received 111 bodies and seen 1,860 persons pledging their bodies since 2007. It has been facing a shortage of donated bodies.

Behl earns workers’ wrath

The president of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee (CTCC), BB Behl, today earned Congress workers’ wrath for demanding a demand draft for Rs 10,000 each from aspirants with their applications for the party ticket from the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat.

Respite for taxi operators

The licences of 24 taxi stands in the city, which were cancelled by the Municipal Corporation, have got an extension till March 31, 2015. The three-member committee constituted to review the cancellation of the licences took the decision at a meeting held today.

A woman employee of the Panjab University’s registration and store branch today filed a complaint of sexual harassment against an accounts officer with the PU authorities. The complaint was later withdrawn.

MCM college gets physics society

The Department of Physics of the MCM DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, launched the first-ever physics society of the institution during a two-day event at the college. The society aims at imparting knowledge and sensitising students to application of science, specifically physics, in day-to-day life.

P’kula court dismisses Rathore’s affidavit
Panchkula, January 29
Former Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) SPS Rathore, accused of molesting 14-year-old tennis player Ruchika Girhotra, submitted an additional affidavit in court today stating that Anand Prakash, father of victim’s friend Aradhna, was fighting legal battle against him to fulfil his political aspirations. The court, however, dismissed the affidavit.

A nine-year-old girl was raped by her neighbour today. The police has arrested a Class IV employee of the PGI for raping the nine-year-old girl in the forest area near Sector 24. The accused has been remanded to police custody.

CLDAV-7 lift karate trophy
Chandigarh, January 29
Karate players of CL Aggarwal DAV Model School, Sector 7, Chandigarh, won the team championship of the 22nd Chandigarh State Karate Championship, concluded at the indoor arena of the school. The host team bagged the overall trophy with a total score of 67 points. Mount Carmel School finished as first runners-up scoring 54 points whereas Saupin’s School, Sector 32 finished third with 46 points.

The Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association will organise 28th Sub-Junior Men and 36th Junior Men Chandigarh State Boxing Championships at PMLSD Public School, Sector 32, on February 15 and16. Boxers born in the year 1997- 98, (46 to 80 kg) 1999, (42 to 66kg), 2000 (34 to 48kg) and 2001 (30to 40kg) will be eligible to participate in the competition.
