Dismissed cop arrested with pistol: A dismissed head constable’s bid to pose as a police inspector to seek relaxation from tax at toll collection points landed him in the soup on Wednesday when the Mahilpur police arrested him with a fake ID card. An illegal pistol was also recovered from him. The accused, Ajit Kumar of Khanna, was arrested at a checkpoint set up near the New Bus Stand here.

PU law graduate appointed PIMS CEO:
The Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has appointed Manpreet Sohal Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the institute. The Board of Governors of the PIMS Medical and Education Charitable Society approved his appointment. A law graduate from PU, Chandigarh, Sohal has completed a hospital management course from Singapore Management University.

Workshop on disaster management held:
A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) led by Inspector Manmohan Singh demonstrated techniques pertaining to natural disaster management at ITI Stadium here on Wednesday. The team, comprising 39 members, made people aware about things to be done during an earthquake. The NDRF is holding such demonstrations in educational institutions of the district.

Niraj Hit Abhilashi Tayal joined the Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited (PSTCL) as the Director, Administration, here on Wednesday. Prior to this, he served as Director, The Bank of Rajasthan Limited, and Chairperson of RH Group of Companies.

Forum backs quota on economic status: The Punjab unit of All-India Equality Forum reiterated its stand that reservation should be based on the financial condition of a person rather than caste and religion. “The forum does not support the demand for reservation to Punjabi Jats on the basis of their caste.” forum senior vice president Dr DS Bhullar said.

Punjabi varsity professor in UGC panel: The University Grants Commission has appointed Prof Gurmeet Singh Maan, Director, Centre for Advanced Media Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala, as a member of the advisory committee for the UGC Assistance to the Centre for Culture, Media and Governance of Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, under its special assistance programme at the level of DRS-I for five years.

Milkman robbed of R
s 2.2 lakh at petrol pump: A milkman was robbed of Rs 2.2 lakh at a petrol pump here on Wednesday. The police said Pritpal Singh of Nangal Abiana village had withdrawn ~2.2 lakh from a bank around 2 pm and tied the bag containing money with his motorcycle. On his way back home, he stopped at a petrol pump for a fuel refill. In the meantime, two youths on a motorcycle snatched the bag and fled, the police said.

Labourer killed as earth caves in:
A labourer died while working at a drain construction site in the city’s Kraal Khud area, the police said today. Tariq Ahmad Mir of Sunderwani area of Budgam district was buried as the earth caved in while he was digging a drain.
