Team sports face neglect in UT Police
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 15
Team sports continue to face neglect of the Chandigarh Police. On Wednesday, when half of the police squad was participating in the Inter-Unit Police Sports Meet at the Sector 26 police lines, not a single member of the hockey and football teams of the UT police were invited to perform drills, like the other participants.

The team games in Chandigarh police are suffering from apathy. Notably, due to no new recruitment under sports quota was done for quite long. The Police Department was scheduled to recruit sportspersons after June 2011 but no development has been made so far. The team games including hockey, football and volleyball are among the worst hit.

“If the department is organising an inter-unit meet, the officials should have the courtesy to include games like football, hockey, cricket and volleyball. Earlier, police teams used to get special invitations for playing in national-level tournaments but with the change in times and no new recruitment our own department is not inviting us to play in the inter unit meet. There is no young blood and moreover no exposure for police teams. Somehow, due to involvement of senior officials, the cricket team manage to play some tournaments otherwise other games are suffering a lot,” said a football player recruited long time back in Chandigarh Police.

If the Chandigarh Police recruit new sports persons, it will also help the local players. On an average every year, two or three local players, in different disciplines, represent the nation.

Another player added, “We are not opposing but the officials should concentrate in larger perceptive. We have a handful of players, in different units, all are well experienced, and the authorities could have easily conducted a seven-a-side football or hockey match. The ‘team’ games need special attention and motivation to perform. If our own department will not support us how can we come forward and showcase our talent. The athletes, kabaddi players, wrestlers, volleyball players have participated in meet then why not us?” asked a senior hockey player.

On the occasion of National Road Safety Week, the Chandigarh Police organisedan inter-unit sports meet at the Police Lines, Sector 26. Events included, kabaddi, tug-of -war, volleyball and athletics meet were organised d. The event was announced open by VK Singh, former Finance Secretary, UT Administration. Today, the pre-quarters rounds were organised.
