Poor condition of link roads irks Dera Bassi residents

Residents of Dera Bassi area have been facing hardships due to the poor condition of link roads. The roads have been witnessing an increase in accident cases as these were not repaired since long. Residents of the area have been demanding the authorities to repair these roads, but to no avail. Residents of nearby villages said they were becoming victims due to potholed link roads. The issue was raised with the authorities concerned many times.

They said local MLA NK Sharma had been assuring that link roads would be repaired soon, but no action had been taken in this regard.

Officials of the Mandi Board, who have the responsibility of repairing and constructing these roads, failed to give any satisfactory answer regarding the issue.

SDO, Mandi Board, Nirmal Kumar, said he do not knew about the amount of funds that were released for repairing the roads.

When XEN of mandi board Mohammad Unaf was contacted in this regard he failed tocomment on the issue.

Residents said the link roads that were lying in a bad condition include Dera Bassi to Samgouli, Dera Bassi to Jolly, Dera Bassi to Amlala Chadiala and Bakarpur, Dera Bassi to Behra, Lalru to Aganpur and Bhagwasi, Lalru to kurli Batouli, Lalru to Handesra and other link roads. They have demanded that these roads should be repaired on a priority basis.

Lawyer murder case
SC rejects accused’s plea

In the local advocate Amarpreet Singh, aka Lucky, murder case, the Supreme Court has rejected the accused’s plea of shifting of the trial from Punjab to Haryana or some other state. The police have arrested nine accused - Sunbir Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Sunil Bhanot, Rajat Sharma, Vishal, Dharminder Singh, Onkar Singh, Deepak Kaushal and Kevin Sushant - in the case.

The accused had moved an application in the Supreme Court, pleading to shift the case from Mohali court to some other court, either in Haryana or some other state. The accused had pleaded that no advocate was ready to fight their case in the Mohali court, where the victim had been practicing for the past few years.

Manjit Singh, uncle of the victim, said the application in question was rejected by the Double Bench of the apex court in the very first hearing. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had already rejected the application earlier, following which the accused had knocked the doors of the apex court.

Earlier, Sunbir had also moved an application in the high court for regular bail on the basis of his marriage. That application was also rejected by the court in September.

Currently, the case is being tried in the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court, Mohali, where framing of charges against the accused are under process.

The next hearing in the case is on January 8.

The accused, who lived in neighbourhood of the victim, had shot dead Lucky on February 27 last year over a trivial issue of parking of vehicle in front of the victim’s house at Phase 3, here.

Man gets life term for murder

Mohali, January 4
The local court today awarded life sentence to a person in a five-year-old murder case. The Mohali Additional District and Sessions Court today announced life sentence to Jagdish Singh, alias Bawa, a resident of Tirupadi village, along with a fine of Rs 10,000 for murder of Roshan Ali from Morinda.

The Mohali police had booked five persons on the charges of murder of Ali on January 18, 2008, on the complaint of the victim's wife Harpal Kaur. Three of them, Tarsem, Rakesh and Sita, had already been acquitted in the case while Harjinder Singh is still at large.

In her complaint, she had alleged that her husband was beaten to death by the accused at their Naggal Sehajgarh village. The victim had lost his way and had reached the village.

One arrested for thrashing constable

The police have arrested a resident of Transit Camp, Sector 52, for thrashing a Chandigarh Police constable and stopping him from performing his duty. A case was registered against the accused, Ashwani, alias Golu, at the Sector 36 police station.

The injured constable was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital, Sector 32.

Thief caught red-handed

The police arrested a man who was reportedly caught red-handed while stealing water taps and rods from University Business School (UBS) at Panjab University. A case was registered against the accused, Pawan, a resident of Sector 38-A, at the Sector 11 police station.

Miscreants snatch purse

Motorcycle-borne miscreants allegedly snatched a purse from a woman near Duplex Market in Mani Majra.

The complainant, Daljit Kaur, said the purse contained a mobile phone and Rs 5,000. A case has been registered at the Mani Majra police station.

Man booked under Arms Act

The Chandigarh Police have arrested a resident of Shantivan Enclave, Sector 48, for carrying a country-made 32-bore pistol and three live cartridges.

The accused, Sumit Kumar, was held near Faidan Barrier.

A case under the Arms Act has been registered at the Sector 31 police station.

Eklavya stuns Dhruv Pal

Local trainee Eklavya Singh upset 7th seed Dhruv Pal to book his berth in the final qualifying round stage during the match of qualifying round for the ongoing India ITF Junior-1 Tennis Tournament being commenced at tennis courts, here, today. Eklavya dominated the 1st set at 6-2 and took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd set. But Dhruv Pal bounced back and won the next four games to name the next set at 6-4.

In the third set, Eklavya took a 2-0 lead but Dhruv levelled the set 2-2. Thereafter, following the long rallies, Eklavya broke Dhruv’s serve and extended his lead to 4-2 but Dhruv again made it to 4-4.

In the 10th game, Eklavya retained 2 match points but Dhruv saved all points.

In a tie-breaker Dhruv got an early break to lead 3-1 but after a see-saw situation, Eklavya closed the match in the 9th match point by winning the tie breaker at 9-7.

In the Girls’ category, 7th seed Nupur Umashankar defeated Harsimran Kaur in a 3-hour match. Harsimran had 3 match points in the 2nd set but she lost the final set tie breaker.

Weightlifters of GKSM Government College, Tanda Urmar, with 16 points claimed the title of the Panjab University Weightlifting for Men, being concluded at the Gymnasium Hall of Panjab University, here today.

KLSD College, Ludhiana, with 13 points and SGGS College, Sector 26, with 7 points, claimed the second and third positions, respectively.

Jasmeet, Jaskirat shine in Shivalik School’s win

Chandigarh, January 4
Shivalik School, Mohali, defeated St Soldier's International School, Sector 28, Chandigarh by three wickets during the ongoing SS Bawa Memorial Inter-School Cricket Tournament for boys (U-16) held here today.

Winning the toss, the St Soldier's team elected to bat first and posted 107 runs in the allotted 20 overs. Jaskirat of the Shivalik team claimed four wickets while Jaspreet sent two batsmen back to the pavilion. In reply, Jasmeet's 60-run knock and Gurdeep's 26 runs helped the Shivalik team to win the match.

In the second match, Ajit Karam Singh International Public School (AKSIPS) defeated Khalsa School, Sector 26, by four wickets. Batting first, the Khalsa School was bundled out for 138 runs in the allotted 20 overs. The AKSIPS achieved the target runs with Ghanshayam hitting an unbeaten knock of 88 runs off 47 balls. — TNS

Puducherry trounce UP

In the ongoing 28th Men and Women Senior Atya Patya National Championship, the Puducherry team defeated Uttar Pradesh by 2-0, at BMD Public School, Sector 63, here, today. In the men’s category, the team defeated registered a 13-10 and 14-11 margin victory.

In the second quarter-final match, Tamil Nadu trounced Goa by 2-0 (18-16 and 14-10). In the third match, Karnataka defeated Kerala 2-0 (41-13 and 47-18).
