Family function
Singer Mika does not mind performing on the New Year Eve and missing his family. He considers his fans as extended family...
Jasmine Singh

A jacket pulled over tightly, layers of warm clothes blocking the entry to chilly winds that he would face in Manali, Bollywood's versatile singer Mika is all set for one of grandest live performances ever. He stresses on the last word 'ever' and explains why he stops for a brief halt in Chandigarh.

"This party is going to create history and I am probably the first singer to be paid Rs 1.25 crore for a three-hour performance," shares Mika. Reason enough to keep warm! "I love to be with my fans, I love to entertain them, and this is one party that I am really looking forward to. I am also looking forward to the cold, I don't know how would I react to such cold weather," he says.

Mika is known for his livewire energy and keeping the audiences engaged is never a tough deal for him. "Let's see," he adds bringing in the modest tone. So, which are the songs that his fans want to hear over and over again? "There are loads, almost 200-300 songs, and I have sung all in a brief period of time. I try and prepare a medley to incorporate my songs, still some are left."

A new year, a new note and a new resolution! "I will be venturing into film production now, Bollywood or Punjabi, I have not decided yet." What about acting in films? He smiles, tucking his jacket, "There are so many good looking boys already there, acting. I feel happy when I see Diljit Dosanjh and Gippy Grewal, they are doing a great job. Besides this, I will continue working for my NGO Divine Touch." Coming 2014 will see Mika back with his world tour, "As I said I love to be with my fans, when I am asked if I don't miss being with my family on New Year's, my answer is that my fans are my extended family."

Par Excellence
Posture perfect
Jesse Grewal

Being in an athletic posture is probably as important as a good grip. To have a repeatable and powerful golf swing the body must be in a correct position with the correct angles and distribution of weight. A good posture helps in maintaining the spine angle through the swing, allows the club to swing on plane, helps the body create a powerful rotatory action and maintains balance through the swing. A loss of posture leads to poor impact and erratic shots.

If we were to hit a ball which was waist high as in tennis we would not have to bend much from the waist. The fact that the golf ball is on the ground creates the need to bend our upper body at an angle to face the ball. The amount we bend determines the plane of the swing. A person who bends less would have a flat swing as the arms would go around the body as the body rotates. To make the swing upright this golfer would have to lift the arms up and down thereby creating a swing which will have a lot of arm action. This is called a two plane swing as the body turns on a flat plane while the arms swing on a different upright plane. This type of swing is fairly accurate but lacks power and depends a lot on good timing.

A one plane swing is when the arms swing on a plane similar to the body. This requires the body to tilt more as this creates an upright swing without the need to swing the arms excessively. The turning action of the body dictates the plane with arms just following this path. This type of swing is repeatable, has a lot of power but requires the person to be athletic and strong as it puts more pressure on the body. The industry of golf fitness has opened up with the need to create this type of swing on the model of golfers like Tiger Woods.

To get into a good posture we have to create two angles with the body - a bend at the waist and a flex of the knees. The knees have to bend very little and that is why the word flex is used as compared to bend. While standing erect press the ground and you will find that the knees flex to do this (picture 1). Now place a shaft along the front of your body (picture 2). Bend from the hip joint and the shaft will point backwards between your legs like a tail (picture 3). This would not happen if we bend incorrectly. Use the 'tail' drill to get into a good posture. The amount you bend will determine the plane of your swing.

Weight watch
Nutty choice
Renupreet Kaur

Although energy dense and therefore high in calories, nuts and seeds can in fact be beneficial for weight loss.

Due to the high calorie content, it is important to keep portion sizes small if weight loss is your goal. A small handful of nuts per day is sufficient to provide you with nutritional benefits and fight off hunger, without consuming too many calories. Not only this, but nuts and seeds are packed full of nutrients, making them a health super food, and hugely more nutritious than other popular snack foods.

Nuts & weight loss

* Nuts and seeds contain a moderate level of protein (anywhere from 5-30 per cent of their total calories.)

* Nuts and seeds contain the so-called "healthy" fats.

* Nuts and seeds contain anti-oxidants and other mineral and vitamins including, selenium, calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, folic acid and vitamin E.

* Nuts and seeds contain fibre.

* Nuts and seeds are easy and convenient to eat when you are on the go.

* Nuts and seeds taste great and go well with many dishes.

* Boost your energy.

* Loaded with vitamins and minerals.

Best choice

* Choose raw and unsalted nuts.

For weight loss and nutrition value, it is best to choose raw, unsalted nuts. Salt can contribute to increase in blood pressure.

* Avoid coated or roasted

Avoid nuts that are coated or roasted in other oils or sugar. Oil coated nuts will also be higher in fat and calories and therefore less suitable for weight loss.

Calorie content of nuts and seeds

Peanuts, almonds, pistachios and cashew nuts are the lowest in calories with around 160 calories per ounce, whilst brazil nuts, walnuts, pine nuts and pecans contain around 180 calories per ounce. Seeds such as pumpkin, sunflower and sesame contain around 150-180 calories per ounce, but are usually consumed in smaller quantities than nuts.

Healthiest nuts & seeds

* Almonds: High in vitamin E, magnesium, copper, vitamin B2 and phosphorus and concentrated in protein. The majority of fat in almonds is healthy mono-unsaturated fat.

* Cashews: High in antioxidants, mono-unsaturated fats and phosphorus.

* Peanuts: High in mono-unsaturated fats, flavonoids, antioxidants, and folic acid. They are also high in vitamin B3.

* Sunflower seeds: High in linoleic acid, fibre, magnesium and phytosterols.

* Walnuts: High in omega 3 fatty acids, manganese and copper.

Suggestions

* Consuming one ounce daily of unsalted nuts (all nuts are good) and/or seeds, such as pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds help to suppress one's appetite.

* Soaked and/or sprouted nuts are best.

Clothes reflect one's personality and also one's state of mind. It is thereby important that one wears what truly defines them. At the newly opened Autumn Gallery, Sector 17, Radhika Nanda, the owner, explains the fundamental offerings of the gallery, which serves as a platform for various fashion designers to exhibit their works at the venue. "The main criteria, however, remains the quality of the product," she says.

The store exhibits the wedding collections by two fashion houses of North India, Be Beautiful, which is all about dressing comfortably with elegance and style and Riwaaz, a couture house from Lucknow, which specialises in 400-year-old tradition of Awadhi embroidery work, including chikankari, mokaish and fardi. "The Ludhiana-based brand, Be Beautiful, is all about dressing comfortably with elegance and style. The collection features a symphony of colours along with different blends of fabrics, textures, silhouettes and embellishments. It is perfect amalgamation of contemporary and classic," says Nanda while adding, " Riwaaz, a couture house from Lucknow and marketing unit of a NGO run by Shweta Malik and Sunny Malik, has products with exquisite Awadi embroidery. Also, we have sarees and suits. Shweta and Sunny are working to empower 500-plus women artisans in and around Lucknow by providing them with permanent employment.

Play it safe
With a little care, the New Year Eve party can become an affair worth remembering. Here’s how...
Mona

New Year’s Eve is here…it’s time to dance, drink and make merry. Dress done, venue decided, friends called…sure you want to have fun ushering in the New Year. Awesome!

However, an error here or there can land you in trouble and if you want make it safe to year 2014, don’t throw caution to the winds.

Follow a limit

Alcohol has now become a significant part of partying, both among the young and old. But it is the most risky business. Opt out of rounds, as it can lead to excess. Go at you own pace, alternate a non-alcoholic drink between alcoholic beverages to keep hydrated. Stay away from unfamiliar names for many fruit drinks can be deceiving and have more alcohol than you bargained for. Have snacks along with drinks. Go for protein rich snacks like peanuts or cottage cheese; these slow down the absorption of alcohol. It goes without saying - don’t accept drinks from strangers. When at a new place with mixed group of friends, get your drink made right in front of you.

Eat sensibly

Moderation is the key here; keep it light and low on calorie if you are aiming at a long party. “Hold a beverage and indulge in conversation rather than mindless nibbling of snacks,” says Romy Khurana, an etiquette expert.

Playing host

If you are hosting a party, it’s going to be little more challenging for you than your guests. Create space for your guests to mingle. Offer a variety of food and beverages and have work designated so that you can have fun too, along with the guests. “Set a theme, colour code and make your ordinary party a special one,” offers Romy. Set a deadline to when the party finishes; half-an-hour before close the bar and offer coffee for sobering up your guests.

Drive safely

Party hoppers take extra care — goes without saying don’t mix drinking and driving. Be careful on roads for there can be revelry makers and clashes are likely. “Enjoy but adhere to limits,” says Rajbeer Deswal, Police Commissioner, Panchkula and Ambala. Police patrolling will be there and women force deployed. It is a good idea if you are going for club’s pick up and drop; ensure you have a designated driver who is sober.

Home fun

If a crowded club with booze and food flowing isn’t your idea of having fun, make your New Year’s Eve special by having a bonfire with loved ones, watching your favourite film or snuggling up with your favourite book in the quilt with a huge mug of coffee!

Hangover cure

Well, if all the pervious measures fail and you wake up with head tizzy on a cold New Year morning, gulp down a glass of water. Go for fruit drinks with extra does of vitamin C and eat light. Taking a warm shower or some fresh air helps too.

Warming up!
The best of winter outfits are out, accessories are in place. It’s time to rock at the New Year’s Eve…
Ashima Batish

There is something about the New Year Eve’s party that doesn’t leave us with clattering teeth, gooseflesh or a dire desire to stay indoors as the temperature falls. Instead as it plunges, the hemlines rise, so do the music decibels; no glass is left half empty, attendance at party venues soar! Just in case you feel you are more human than a party animal, you can refer to this dressing up guide. Dressing down, though not literally, is always an available option!

Low on layers

If you really want to cut down on layers, opt for a layered gown, which is a single piece of garment. Pick a long dress with volume and layers attached to keep you warm. Jai Parvesh, fashion designer duo, suggest, “Try lingerie corsets under the gown if at all you want to add an extra layer. These will not only keep you warm, but also hide your flab and shape up your figure.” A long dress gives you the liberty to keep your feet warm. Feel free to wear long boots or stilettos. But don’t take it a little too far; we mean Uggs are not an option at all.

Fashion designer Rahul Mishra is this season’s announced style guide. For what he presented as a part of his autumn winter collection earlier this year is meant to celebrate a dip in temperatures. Rahul suggests instead of adding layers to your party-wear, just wear the right fabric; to be precise wear merino wool. “And pick dresses that have embroidery or even stronger motifs, something that has been strictly associated with silk.” Peplum has been one of the most popular silhouettes in the last couple of years, but it won’t last beyond this season. Rahul cites this as the reason why you should pick a tailored peplum woolen dress. “At the most, you will have to add a jacket to your dress and you are good for a party.” That is irrespective of venue - indoors or outdoors. “Merino wool is a natural temperature regulator,” Rahul says.

Colour full

If you can’t take to experiment, play safe with a dress that ends at the thighs and team it up with long leather boots. “Accessorise with mufflers or an overcoat that matches the length of the dress,” comes from Niket Mishra, who doesn’t shy away from adding bling to his clothes for parties. “Why shouldn’t men try a bit of bling in what they wear? It will make them stand out.” He says it is high time men gave black a miss and took to colours. “In fact why not try colour blocking.” As for girls, he says, “Denim dresses with sequin works will do fine.”

PS: Please don’t take the biting cold lightly. Wear warmers, boots and mufflers; take a couple of drinks to keep warm as well. Following fashion is fine, but certainly not blindly.

Hair you go!
Audrey Hepburn's beehive named most memorable hairdo

Actress Audrey Hepburn's beehive, which she flaunted in classic romantic film Breakfast at Tiffany's, has been named the most iconic hairstyles by a hairdressing company.

In a list put together to mark hairdresser Toni & Guy's 50th anniversary, Hepburn' s beehive, Elvis Presley's much talked about quiff and Jennifer Aniston's Friends hair cut emerged as the most iconic hairdo in the history.

"Audrey Hepburn's beehive in Breakfast at Tiffany's is a style almost everyone is familiar with, even if they have never seen the film," Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck, Global Creative Director for Toni & Guy, said.

"The image of her with her dark hair piled up while she is clutching a cigarette holder is one of the most recognizable film images of all time. The fact the style is still topping these lists half a century since the film was released shows how iconic it really is," she added.

While Hepburn hairstyle landed on top spot in the list comprising of 50 memorable hairdo, Presley's jet black quiff came second.

It was followed by Bob Marley's dreadlocks and the cut made famous by Aniston during her stint as Rachel Green in hit TV show Friends. — PTI

Selena slams fan over bullying

Singer-actress Selena Gomez has criticised a fan over their bullying remarks on Instagram. The singer intervened after two fans clashed on the photo-sharing website, with one fan posting a photo of a picture of a scar on her left arm.

A second fan, with the username 'selinagomesfan', wrote in the photo's comments box, "Cut, cut, cut, cut!" The first fan initially wrote, "I just wanna die so all of this will end already. I feel so worthless. It's hard for me to ignore people." Gomez soon reached out to the first fan, while also telling the second to stop using her name as their handle.

"This is ridiculous. My fans don't do this to others. That's not what I stand for so you can gladly stop being a fan of me. I only encourage love, confidence, kindness." To the first fan, she said, "My love, you are gorgeous just the way you are. Don't you ever attempt it again. Ok? I love you too much for you to be doing that. PS: To all of my fans, don't ever think this is fun to get attention. It's just wrong. I love you all just the way you are." — PTI

The rebellious streak

Pop star Beyonce Knowles says she enjoys being rebellious and wanted to break some laws while filming the music video for XO.

The 32-year-old singer, whose self-titled new album topped the US charts despite no prior promotion, said she tried to shoot the music video for XO, directed by Terry Richardson, without a permit on Coney Island, New York in August.

"If it was my choice, I would never have a permit. I would just get in the car, get a camera, and we'd just shoot, and trust me, we tried," Beyonce said.

"I'm trying to rebel against perfection. It's fun because you never know what's going to happen," she added.

Sonu Sood likes being the bad guy

Sonu Sood has played the baddie in Dabangg and recently in R...Rajkumar. He will dub for a Hollywood action film based on Greek Mythology. He talks about movies…

Hollywood action

I am a huge fan of Hollywood action films. They have a great connection with kids. My favourites in this genre are The Avengers, Thor and The Incredible Hulk. I love the larger-than-life feel of their main protagonists. I am trying to match my voice with the character in the best possible manner.

Boys party

Working on Farah's (Farah Khan) film is a fun experience. I know Abhishek (Abhishek Bachchan) since the time I did Yuva. We share a great rapport. Shah Rukh Khan is the most humble superstar I have come across. Working with these two is like a party in itself.

New villains

I feel that the villains have become a lot more entertaining than they were in the yesteryears. The bad man of today sings, dances and entertains. He also gets drunk and acts silly at times. I feel it's fine as long as it makes people smile.

A branch of Bake Fresh, this coffee joint has an assortment of warm and cold salads ranging from the ever popular classic Waldrof salad , Cantonese and hocus pocus salad to the Vietnamese and Thai chicken salads to mention a few.

"We have tried to cater to all tastes as that's the demand of the gourmands in the town," opine Vani and Manik, the proprietors. Mexican food which is spicy and sweet is quite a hit with the Indian palate-"I really relish tortillas and a ratatouille," quips the young engineering student Gaurav while his friend Harsh bites into a vegetarian enchilada with its signature sour crème and salsa topping.

Though it is not easy to incorporate the sophisticated French and Italian delicacies , Café Aroma has tried to bring dishes like chicken bell halan and lasagne naplotina, ravioli and different kinds of pastas to the table.

The owners are keen to have the feed-back from their customers. So a special board has been earmarked for every body to pen down their honest views and as Manik says "we take these comments very seriously and then try to amend what we can".

For the children the traditional Maggi in its various forms and the perennial hot dog remains an all-time favourite. Freshly baked cakes and puddings are there to appease the sweet tooth. Bakery products like rolls, patties and doughnuts are also available off the shelf.

Easy come, easy go

There is no denying the fact that the television industry is getting competitive by the day and if the shows don’t deliver the desired ratings, the channels don’t think twice before axing them off. Lets take a look at a few shows, which ended in a short run...

Dil Ki Nazar Se Khoobsurat

The concept of the show was interesting as the story of the show revolved around the life of a dark skinned man, who falls for a pretty and fair girl. Nonetheless, the show didn't turn out into a mature sensible love story. We think that the cliché and predictable plots ruined it for this show.

Kaali - Ek Punar Avatar

Kaali - Ek Punar Avatar was based on a serious subject of a mother's fight to avenge the death of her son. However, it seems like the show was a bit too serious for the audience as it failed to garner good ratings.

Mujhse Kuchh Kehti..Yeh Khamoshiyaan

This show was marred with controversies right from the start. It went on air much later than its scheduled date, then the lead actor, Mohit Sehgal, had issues about his footage and role, so he quit. Although the show was telecast on the prime time, it failed to capture the attention of the audience.

Badalte Rishton Ki Dastaan

In the show, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Aditi Gupta played the role of women, who were in love with the same man. While Sanjeeda was the lover who got pregnant with the child of the man who she loved, Aditi ached for the love of her husband. Kiran Karmarkar's powerful acting too failed to save this convoluted plot.

Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal

The show was supposed to be funny, but it ended up being done to death. While Gaurav Gera played the role of a man, who had to dress up as a woman to stay as a tenant, the show failed to thrive despite Gaurav's cool looks. — HRM

I do not want to be typecast: Kanwar Dhillon

After playing the role of an antagonist in the show, Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha, Kanwar Dhillon is now playing the lead role in the show Do Dil Ek Jaan. He talks to us about his new role and a lot more.

Tell us something about your role in Do Dil Ek Jaan…

I play the role of Vidhaan a character, which has just been introduced to the show.

Getting a lead in a show is a big deal. Do you agree?

Yes. Every actor works hard to do a lead role. I had planned to take a break for one and a half months, but I landed a lead role in the show. I believe that my hard work has paid off. I am looking forward to this new show as it got a good opening. The rating too has increased. I guess the fan following from Na Bole.. helped.

You seem to be getting grey roles. What do you think is the reason for that?

Not really. Though right now my role has much mystery and intrigue, but in reality, the heroine's father has a negative role. I am the positive lead. I was the antagonist in Na Bole... Here, I am the hero. Let's see how the plot unfurls.

How was your journey as an actor?

My first show was The Buddy Project that was telecast on Channel V, where I played the role of an antagonist. I got much acclaim for the role. Later, in my second show, Na Bole…, my role was special as it was a rare combination of both, negative and positive. However, I did not want to be typecast, so I stayed away from the negative roles.

Tell us something about your personal life. Are you dating anyone?

No. I am totally single and not ready to mingle. As an actor, you work hard for 16 to 18 hours, so you need a person to be understanding. I don't know when that will happen.
