Fake CBI inspector held for rape

Chandigarh, December 30
The UT police today arrested a 29-year old man on charges of rape. The accused allegedly posed as a CBI inspector and raped a 19-year-old girl. The victim was known to the accused for the past five years.

The victim had complained about the accused to the UT SSP on December 24. A case has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

The accused has been identified as Vijay Kumar Sahota, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony. Vijay is in fact a drama artiste. He has been sent to two-day police custody.

Police is yet to recover the police uniform and fake identity cards.

The victim is stated to be three months pregnant.

In her complaint to the police, the victim stated that Vijay threatened her widow mother and her younger brother that he would eliminate them in a fake encounter if they raised any alarm regarding the issue. She said the accused raped her when she was alone at her home few days back.

When the family complained to the CBI office in Sector 30, they got to know that the accused was cheating on them.

It was then that they complained to the UT police.

The police then arrested the accused on charges of rape and cheating.

Further investigations were on.

The Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 45, won the 8th Sister Alberta Under-16 Memorial Cricket Tournament here today. The tournament was organised by St Anne’s Convent School, Sector 32.

The deciding match was played between Chandigarh Baptist School and Millennium School, Mohali.

Chandigarh Baptist won the toss and chose to bat first.

The team played well and piled up 134 runs all out in 20 overs.

Ayush Sharma played a vital inning of 50 runs in 39 balls along with Nikhil Verma who played 27 runs of 29 balls in the match.

Karanveer also played a good knock of 18 runs of 16 balls.

For Millennium school, Shourya took three for 31 runs and Ayush Verma claimed two for 20 runs.

Chasing the target, Millennium School bundled out at 103 runs for the loss of seven in 20 overs.

Vishesh with 37 runs of 31 balls was the highest scorer for the team.

For the wining team, Mannu took four wickets for 22 runs, helping his team to win the match by 31 runs.

Shourya was declared the man of the series.

Saupin’s School, Sector 32, and Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 47, won their respective league matches on the 6th day of the ongoing SS Bawa Memorial Under-16 Inter-School Cricket Tournament organised by the UT Cricket Association.

The matches were held at the LIC ground in Sector 26.

The first match was played between Shivalik School, Mohali, and Saupin’s School, Sector 32. Shivalik School, Mohali, won the toss and elected to bat first.

The school, however, did not play well and bundled out on mere 69 runs in 18.3 overs. Fine bowling by Hardik, Prabhjit and Pathivi enabled the team to get two wickets each for Saupin’s School.

Chasing the target of 69 runs, Saupin’s School achieved the target in just 9.1 overs without a single loss of any wicket.

Swapnil’s score of 52 runs (not out) and Prithvi’s score of 15 runs (not out), helped the team win the match by 10 wickets.

The second match was played between Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 47, and AKSIPS, Sector 41.

AKSIPS-41 won the toss and elected to bat first. They could not perform well and made only 69 runs on the loss of seven wickets.

Aayush, Ritik and Mannu claimed two wickets each for Baptist School.

The Chandigarh Baptist School chased the target and achieved the set score in 8.4 overs without any loss of wicket.

Fine batting by Karanvir, who made 30 runs (not out), and Nikhil, who made 28 runs (not out) helped the team to win the match by 10 wickets.

Next league matches will commence from January 2 on LIC Ground in Sector 26.

Dikshita Rana, Abhinav clinch under-12 tennis title

Dikshita Rana clinched the girls’ (U-12) title of the Kundan International Total Tennis Championship in Sector 46, here today. Dikshita did not give her opponent any opportunity to put up a fight and registered win easily.

She clinched the girl’s under-12 title by trouncing her opponent Anvil 6-0.

In the boy’s category (U-12), Abhinav outclassed Vikramaditya in a keenly contested three-set match, which lasted 100 minutes. Abhinav won the title with 4-0, 2-4, 5-4 (5).

In the final of boys’ under-10 category, Pranav Chopra easily won the final by defeating his rival Sarabjot in straight sets 4-2 and 4-2. Other category for boys (U-14) was a tough one. It was a close fight between Archit Juneja and Sarabjot Singh. But in the end, Archit succeeded and beat Sarabjot Singh 5-4, 4-5, 5-4. In boys (U-16) final, Sahil Yadav beat Sahil Garg 5-3, 4-2. In men's open final, Manjot Singh beat Parminder 4-2 and 4-2.
