Masti, Punjabi style
For the singer-actors from the region, New Year Eve is a special occasion where they dole out peppy performances for avid audiences…
Jasmine Singh

Spirits are almost touching the sky, a smile appears softly while touching others around; the good and the bad of yesterday is nearing an end waiting to board another ship that leaves for 2014 harbour! A New Year, lot of merry-making, singing, dancing; plans have already been made and texted around in the family as well as friends

When everyone around is planning how to kickstart the New Year, a group of people called entertainers - singers, actors or everything rolled into one - have taken upon themselves the task to help you with the merry-making. Of course they get their nickel in return, but then instead of the warm and cozy circle of family and friends, they hop on the stage with a mike in hand; ready to entertain. Punjabi singer-actor brigade gets ready to rock and roll into the New Year at their respective shows, where they promise full-on entertainment. Check out where you can catch them.

Double dhamaal

Babbal RaiPunjabi singer actor Jassi Gill and Babbal Rai generally perform together. This New Year will see them performing in Hoshiarpur, something that they look forward to. But will be missing out on something. "I have been performing at New Year's from the last two years and have never felt I am away from my loved ones. I don't attach importance to dates, it is the moment and the company that makes every day a new one," shares Jassi Gill, who will be crooning all his hit numbers. Babbal Rai, on the other hand, has been off and on with performances, as he spends much time in Melbourne. This is going to be his first official performance as he laughs about it. "Unlike others, I might not be sitting around with family and friends. I believe I will be entertaining people and my fans, which is also like family to me."

Preet Harpal Jatt bulletin

Singer actor Preet Harpal will perform at Abohar this New Year Eve, singing all his hit numbers from BA Pass, BA Fail to Lock Up. He ensures that despite his busy schedule, he will make it on time to be with his family. "I am hoping to catch up with them before the clock hits 12," he says. Being away from family does bother, so Preet ensures that he blocks shows that are nearer to his city.

Prince of hearts

Roshan PrinceActor-singer Roshan Prince always hopes to spend quality time with near and dear ones and when it's a New Year Eve, he rather wants to start it with the familiar faces around. "I haven't spent a single New Year all these years away from my family. I am always there with my parents when the clock strikes 12. I want to be with them on this special moment." This year he performs on December 30 in Chandigarh. "I get to be with family on the 31. It is not about a particular day though, nonetheless, I can't deny that celebrating important moments with the family is also something I can't miss."

Balli Riar Young gun

For Balli Riar, New Year is all about the spirit and how you feel about it. This year, however, he will be performing in Malaysia on the New Year's Eve. "I am looking forward to it; at the same time, I will be back on the first to be with my family and friends. I don't think it is just the Eve where you should enjoy, it's about starting the year on a good note."

Gippy Grewal Lucky story

Celebrated singer-actor Gippy Grewal always maintains that his family is his first priority. For this reason, he doesn't block too many shows. "I am not very regular about performing on New Year; I would rather spend time with my family, my kids," he shares. Gippy is performing in New Delhi this New Year. "I have strictly told the organisers that I would perform from 10-11 pm so that the last one hour I can be with my family who will be travelling with me."

Gippy gets repeated requests from his fans to perform on all his hit numbers.

Yo Yo Honey Singh and Money Aujla(L) Money wise

Money Aujla of Siftaan fame is rising up the ladder, performing at live shows nearly 365 days a year. This New Year he takes the stage at Mumbai. "I do miss being with my family, just lazing around, and sleeping through the New Year; all the same, I feel happy when I see people dancing at my performance. I feel satisfied that I have helped in some way to make a good start to their new year."

Money Aujla will be rocking the stage singing all the hit numbers. “I am already in the festive spirit, I have been on world tour throughout this year, and I hope this continues. I wish everyone has a great year ahead.”

The art of blending
Manpriya Singh

Ever find people looking one colour at the centre of the face, another one at the eyes and yet another on the hairline? Failing to merge colours on your face might even make you look like a drawing file. If make-up is an art then blending is a fine art.

Kevyn Aucoin, the American make-up artist, photographer and author considered not blending among Ten Most Common Beauty Mistakes in his book The Art of Makeup. Time and again, several make up experts and celebrity make-up artists have maintained the rhetoric "blend, blend, blend."

What is it?

Technically, blending is the art of mixing different colours so much so that even the similar hues of the same shade, need to merge to present a coherent part of the face. It's like pulling one colour into and over another, in a way that there are no defined edges. Shivani, head of the make-up department, Head Master's Salon and Spa says, "Everybody knows how important it is to blend when applying make-up. Nowadays people are very aware and well travelled so nothing less than a flawless make-up will do. For the right kind of blending one has to be very knowledgeable." Well blended face is the open secret behind the flawless finish. Smoky eye is one of the finest examples what the right amount of blending can do. Any colour applied on your face, each step of make-up application needs to be followed by blending.

How to blend

Start by taking different shades of the same colour to begin learn how to blend. A medium brown and a dark brown are likely to blend into each other way better then two different colours. Blending is best achieved by the use of brushes because the bristles ensure colours subtly merge to and fro on the surface. Sponges come a close second. Shares Shivani, "Ideally a permutation and combination of make-up sponges, brushes and finger tips should be used to achieve the right effect."

When it comes to brushes, squirrel, pony and goat hair brushes might cost like a fortune but they are worth the investment as natural bristles require least amount of pressure and thus ensure airbrushed quality. Adds Garima Aneja, freelance make-up artist, from the region, "Make-up artists the world over are asking us to blend, blend and blend. But we are often too scared of working up the product into our skins." She adds, "Whether that's your base, blush or eye shadow, in fact, blending is one of the vital things you need to create a seamless finish." Period.

stress buster
Change your perspective
Renee Singh

We see the year coming to a close and we all have a habit of taking stock of what we did in the year. Our achievements, our challenges, how we met them and where we are today. How is life treating us, this is a bothersome question. But the way we look at the circumstances we face in life has a profound impact on how we experience stress, respond to challenges and perceive the events in our lives.

Perspective always shapes our experience and it also explains some of the minor mental shifts that can have a major impact on the way one thinks and acts!

Threat versus challenge

Facing challenges in life makes us stronger and more empowered. Research tells us that one small shift can make all the difference. How to take away the stress from your struggles is a way we must learn through practice and resilience. The New Year brings with it new ideas, perceptions and perspectives. What helps to deal with any kind of stress situation is a deep level of emotional resilience.

Coping with stress

This is partially inborn but can also be learnt in order to handle the minor and major challenges of life with greater ease, to grow from adversity and to turn potentially negative events into positive ones many steps can be taken. Here is how:

Right attitude

Resilient people view life's problems as challenges and respond accordingly with action rather than with fear, self pity, blame or a victim mentality.

Become aware

Part of resilience is emotional awareness. You must learn to understand what you are going through and why. Many times we are overwhelmed by our emotions and this can frighten and immobilise us. Knowing why you are upset can provide valuable information on what you can change in your life.

Positive self talk

Remind yourself that you are strong and can grow stronger and more wise as you handle life's challenges.

Maintain journal

This will help you to explore your inner world and come up with a plan of action.

Take control

Resilient people feel they are in control of their lives. We do realise sometimes that while we can't control our circumstances we can control how we respond to them. This huge change in our attitude can really make a big difference in the course our lives take.

Cultivate optimism

This is not just about looking at the brighter side of life. It is a way of viewing the world where you maximize your strengths and accomplishments and minimise your setbacks and weaknesses. This also helps you in becoming more resilient.

Sense of humour

If you are able to laugh at life's frustrations you can have increased immunity to stress and adversity.

Explore spiritual side

Research shows that reconnecting or strengthening your spiritual connection provides you with a certain level of strength.

Never give up

Many people know of many strategies they work within coping with stress but the most successful are those who maintain the effort for a longer time. Don't ever give up on working towards a situation.

What's in

Long and lean dresses with sexy slits will rule the season. Apart from that add drape dresses to your wardrobe. You can add to the sex appeal of the dress by belting it over narrow trousers. Try silver fanny bags, they are an out of the box choice.

What's out

Too much embroidery is a thing of the past. Plain fabric with volume looks graceful.

Colour count

White and silver, ox blood, deep sapphire and coral. Also, all jewel tones with metallic hues like silver, copper, golden will be in .

Party couture

Decide your dress according to the occasion. For a cocktail party, a wrap dress would look fine. If you are experimental, try wrapping a saree over a sarong and belt it. Wear it with boots, the ensemble might sound a bit too experimental, but it will be worth a try. Draped jersey dress is another non-conformist attire to go for.

Leading in design

It has to be Coco Chanel for her spunk, style and elegance. In recent times, it's Dries Van Noten. His balance of commerce and creative brilliance is unparalleled.

Dressed to the nines

It has to be Deepika Padukone. She did her first show with me when she was a model and she was brilliant even then.

Next is what

My Spring Summer 2014 line is a collection that is high on style. It's about layered ensembles, drapes and long lean silhouettes. Floor sweeping kurtas, belted in the middle and made in sheer material will be a part of the collection. Most of the creations will be fusion wear that will effortlessly make one look stylish.

On the Indian fashion industry

I'd rather shop in India than in Europe. Sadly, there's nothing interesting happening in Europe when it comes to fashion. There's a sense of boredom.

‘We’ paying a tribute to Amrita Shergil at an exhibition Something special
Sometimes expecting the unexpected leaves one pleasantly surprised and a few art events evoked a similar feeling. At Art Portfolio, for the first time in the city, Atul Bakshi, the only glass sculptor in India, spoke about exploring a medium that quenched his thirst for both creativity and passion. Bobby Sandhu, the host of the show Ki Haal Chaal Hai, exhibited his pencil sketches at Art Portfolio. City girls Avneet Sabharwal, Richa Saxena, Anna, Deepti Chandola and Vijeta hosted an exhibition at their residence.

The city witnessed a series of photography exhibitions this year. It started with Sanjay Kaushal and Shubh Mohan Singh's humble explanation for their creative pursuit, a photography exhibition titled From Earth to Sky, with their subject being the Kalka-Shimla railways. Later, it progressed to the Mahakumbh festival wherein Gurpreet Singh, Shubh Mohaan Singh and Vijendra Trighatia, exhibited their works on the 'Colours of Mahakumbh' at the Punjab Kala Bhawan.

At Alliance Francaise, Magali Couffon exhibited her photographs, which explored the lives of Indian tribal folk. The one that explored, rather vividly, the socio-economic and political scenario while challenging the complacent historical platitudes was the exhibition, Lived stories, which included the images from private collection across South Asia, including personal contributors, Punjab Digital Library, Liberation War Museum (Dhaka) and more.

It all started in January with the annual art exhibition by Lalit Kala Akademi, which was soon followed by the one that was organised by HIFA. Like they say, well begun is half done! While on one hand, We, a group of Indian contemporary women artists, initiated a series of solo exhibition to pay a tribute to Amrita Shergill, it featured a series of works by women artists, including Anjali Aggarwal and Niku Guleria. However, The Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi took the honours by paying a tribute to Amrita Shergill. They summoned the Padmashree awardee, Anjolie Ella Menon, art critic, S Kalidas, Amrita's niece, Navina Sundaram and Dayanita Singh, the popular photographer of 'Myself Mona Ahmed' series for the event.
