Development projects halted due to shortage of sand, gravel
Parmod Mehta

DERA BASSI, DECEMBER 29
Various developmental projects and construction work has been halted due to the shortage of sand and gravel. These projects have been lying incomplete because sand mining was blocked for over a year. Due to the blocking of sand and gravel mining people concerned were bound to get sand on high rates. According to information from sources, a truck full of sand having 400 feet to 700 feet capacity is available on the rates of Rs 12,000 to 21,000.

This sand is being brought from Ropar, Una and Baddi (Himachal Pradesh). The sources further added that Zirakpur to Patiala and Bathinda road was planned for four lanning but due to shortage of sand and gravel, contractor could not start work on this project. Along with this the repairing work of link roads in Dera Bassi area also could not take place due to shortage of construction material. No one has got tenders for this project.

Construction work on housing projects at Zirakpur and Dera Bassi was also going on very slow pace due to same reasons. Meanwhile, district mining officer DM Bhagat said there were 15 mining sites in Mohali district but all were blocked in the absence of environmental clearance from the central environment ministry. He said three mining sites were auctioned some time ago but mining could not take place because the case for environment clearance was lying pending with the central ministry of environment.

One mining site at Chadiala was started some time ago but due to some faults it is being reviewed again. People relating to construction projects have demanded that sand mining should be started soon so that construction work could take place properly.

Boy hurt in hit-and-run

Chandigarh, December 29
In another hit-and-run accident, an eight-year-old boy was injured after he was hit by a Travera at Mauli Jagran today. The boy, Balbir Singh, suffered a fracture in his right leg. Though the Chandigarh registration number of the SUV was noted down, the police have failed to trace the SUV and its driver. They have claimed the office of the Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA) was closed on Sunday thus their investigation couldn't proceed.

An injured boy was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Mani Majra, where doctors referred him to the Government Multi-speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16.

The child's brother told the police that his brother Balbir was crossing the road when the Tavera, which was coming from the Sector 17 of Panchkula, hit him. The SUV driver stopped at some distance but when a passerby ran towards him, he fled the scene. In the meantime, they noted down the vehicle registration number.

An injured Balbir was rushed to the Civil Hospital in a police vehicle. Police said the accused would be arrested soon.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old Jyoti, who had slipped into coma after being hit by a Santro last week, gained consciousness on Saturday night and is able to recognise the members of her family. She has been admitted to the Government Multi-speciality Hospital in Sector 16.
