Message & meaning
Post the cult film Sadda Haq, producer Kuljinder S Sidhu outlines his intent to come up with more meaningful films…
Manpriya Singh

If not hard-hitting cinema, then there should be at least a creative take on history we've closely lived, the incidents we've recently seen. Post the cult film Sadda Haq, rather than the pressure, Kuljinder S Sidhu feels the responsibility to continue with cinema having a purpose and not jump onto the bandwagon of romantic comedies.

"It pays to be different from the crowd. Our endeavour will always be that the film should give some message to the audience. After Sadda Haq, naturally there is some responsibility to come up with quality cinema," he shares, while launching an acting course at OXL School of Multimedia. He recalls some of his days behind the camera. "Since 2002, I had been eyeing for a good break or role in the industry." He laughs, "Even in 2009, the director of my very own film rejected me saying that I needed to get training first. By the time I did that, the film was done."

Thereafter Sadda Haq happened, which had a fair share of struggles. He recalls, "It might have been banned but almost all the politicians saw it. By the time it re-released, a lot of piracy had eaten into our profits. We are in talks over its satellite certification."

Team work

Talent sometimes does not automatically translate into confidence and that's where they claim to step in. Joining him is his core team comprising Sandeep Kapoor, Dinesh Sood and Nidhi Sidhu. "To be a good actor, your observation power has to be strong and apart from the fact that we'll prefer our students in our production, we'll honestly inform those who can't be an actor at all," shares Dinesh Sood.

Up next

Coming up is a film titled Yodha and yet another tentatively titled Rehbar. Shares Sandeep Kapoor, a pass-out from New York Film Academy, "Rehbar is a satire on the godmen. Recently they've been in news and quite a lot at that. It's a humorous take on the subject."

Assures Kuljinder S Sidhu, "The second draft of Yodha's script is ready and we are spending a lot of time in pre-production. That's something makers in Punjabi cinema don't do. We are lucky enough to already have loyal viewers who we don't want to disappoint." A promise the audience would love to see him uphold!

The course

If you have it, they claim to harvest it.

Shares the faculty at OXL School of Multimedia Jagdish Tiwari, "It's a two-month that costs Rs 20,000 and in that we'll prepare the students to give their auditions confidently. A lot of students come for the auditions and start mimicry. That doesn't necessarily mean that they can act."

Right in the act
Actor Anuj Sachdeva of Haani fame, looks forward to the future with a situational comedy
Jasmine Singh

You have to allow the unexpected to happen, only then would you get to see something new and different in life. Actor Anuj Sachdeva wouldn't interfere with the stream of things around him. After giving a good performance in his debut Punjabi film Haani, the actor is now ready for a second take. This time he stands in front of the camera as Lucky for his second Punjabi film Fish Mohabbat Thandedaari (FMT), directed by Sunita Dhir. Anuj can feel the nip in the weather in Chandigarh where he is shooting currently, just the right time for a hot cup of tea that he takes while sharing notes.

The film

This is my second film after Haani. I was getting a couple of offers; however, I liked the script of FMT and took it on. I play the lead opposite Money Kapoor, and the film, though not different from the other ones, we have around is a situational comedy.

Comedy again

He smiles, he has understood the expected. "I know about a lot of comedy films being made. I wouldn't say this film is going to be an altogether different thing; the fact that the director will be offering the right treatment makes me confident.

Punjabi cinema

It is growing and we are also hearing about the experimentation. There isn't anything wrong other than the fact that we need things to be more streamlined.

Regional flavour

Jatt & Juliet; I liked the performance of all the actors, it is a job done well.

Act right

Diljit Dosanjh; he is a good entertainer, something that the audiences want to see.

Tadka time

Give me dal makhni and roti anytime.

When in Punjab…

Expect the unexpected, something that I am going by.

With a smile
Ashima Batish

After working for a few years in the television industry, actors get used to slogging for fourteen hours a day. They crib about the unrealistic shoot schedules but then how many of them quit television for easier jobs? Isn't fame really addictive? At the most, actors will hop shows or shift to reality show genre but quitting doesn't feature in the scheme of things. Gunn Kansara, who will be seen playing Chandani in Big Magic's new show Naadaniyan can't agree more. After doing daily family soaps such as Mrs Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein, Sajan Ghar Jaana Hai and Sindoor Tere Naam Ka, signing up for a comedy, she feels, is the best thing that could have happened to her. Gunn will be playing the female lead in Nadaanyian.

An adaptation of a popular Pakistani sitcom, the show is about a woman who supports her out-of-job husband and brother-in-law. "Chandani resides in a metropolitan city. She gets agitated each time she realises that she has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders. She loves her husband, but can't tolerate him sitting idle," she says. The character she is playing this time might be different from the vulnerable daughter-in-law she has enacted in her previous shows, but that hasn't changed her approach. "The difference between doing a comedy show and a family show is that by the end of the day, you laugh your stress out."

The show, she says, will retain the comedy elements that the original version was popular for. "The comedy will be tongue-in-cheek and not direct, like the way we have in Comedy Nights with Kapil. Every episode will have a new theme, something we saw in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai." Post the response that 24 received from the Indian audience, picking another foreign hit show makes a lot of sense. "It will only add to the variety of content offered on television. Women are the target audience of most of production houses, but they won't mind watching comedy shows as well." As for emotions, she finds comedy more difficult than the sob-some, cry-out-loud, smile-less sequences. "It gets all the more challenging when you have to do comedy with a straight face, without expressing what you feel about a situation."

Bright & beautiful
Miss India 2012 Vanya Mishra is a busy girl these days. She says life has never been the same post the title…
Mona
Vanya Mishra
starry eyed: Vanya Mishra

Vanya Mishra is definitely a pink person! Miss India 2012, the lissome beauty was dressed in pink on Thursday evening; merrily flaunting her pink phone and confessing her love for the colour. She spoke about the maddening schedule and her short-term plans.

Judging the fbb Femina Miss India 2014 auditions, Vanya has made it to the winning side and life's not the same anymore! "I dreamt of the crown, but had no clue how life would be after that," admits Vanya, standing tall in her towering heels.

While being a former queen keeps her busy, Vanya has made the big decision to get back to her studies. "I am back in college. Though my teachers and parents are most supportive yet it becomes difficult to strike balance between exam dates and schedules spread across the country," says Vanya, who loves to give her best to whatever she does.

Studies or pageant, she is trying to put her best foot forward in both domains and has no regrets about not winning the Miss World crown. "I did put in best efforts. But then sometimes fortune doesn't favour you and India cannot win the crown every year."

For Vanya, Miss World turned out to be a fabulous experience and being in top seven was good enough for her. The grooming she got is what makes her happy. "Just being beautiful is not enough to win a pageant. It's the confidence that's makes you stand out in the crowd. Also, what works at last is how well you interact. Miss India is both about beauty and brains."

Beauty queens head to films, Vanya is no exception. She admits offers had been pouring in from Bollywood and regional cinema, but she wants to complete her education first. However, Vanya has signed a bilingual film that will be made in Tamil and Telugu. "The story is nice; it's about a 20-year-old engineering student who wants to be a film director. I could relate to it. The director is Suresh Krissna who has directed the likes of Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, so I knew I would be in safe hands."

Back to pink again; is it her favourite colour? "I like black and white too, but, yes, I am a pink person," says Vanya who plans to learn acting. "I am not a big planner; I just think six months ahead and studies followed by acting are on my mind," says Vanya.

Even for Rihanna the ultimate metaphor for shining bright is Like Diamonds In the Sky. The sparkle signifies two things in one go — luxury and bling. Entice, a jewellery brand by KGK group, puts up an exhibit of diamond and kundan polki collections.

It all looks alike and too much for the eye to take in one go, till pointed out the USP. He adds, while pulling out a piece of earrings, "Do you see the dangling parallel lines? There is a movement in them and they are flexible. Otherwise diamond studded jewellery in generally stiff." As per Indian traditions, anything other than gold has always been accorded a second status. When it comes to resale, nothing evokes the same faith. He clarifies, "That perception is increasingly changing. Diamonds give you a buy back and appreciation too, though that depends on the price of dollar among other things."

Full of beans

Chandigarh is now all set to explore a brand new style of gourmet. Arriving on the city's culinary circuit is Pranav's and Nishtha's Frenchpress Cafe - a French-Italian bistro in Sector 16.

Says Pranav, "European cuisine is carefully crafted and all about sophistication. And with the growing trend among food connoisseurs we thought of offering their palates a unique experience. So, we came up with the idea of coming up with a restaurant that is not just about fine dining but also cafe sitting."

The vintage-styled European architecture of the cafe offers not only a cozy ambience but also an extensive menu that ranges from varieties of beverages, appetizers and the main course dishes.

"Frenchpress Cafe is a place for serious coffee lovers, where green coffee beans are freshly roasted which gives a distinctive taste and a coffee kick to the coffee lovers, the concept of freshly roasting the coffee bean is a first in North India," says the beaming brother sister duo. Besides, we distinguish ourselves from other cafes as everything is freshly cooked in the kitchen and we bake all our breads in house.

Well, French gastronomy doesn't just end here. Nishtha, an MBA in International Business from England and Pranav, who holds a masters degree in finance from Scotland, thought of bringing things to the city which they missed living and travelling in Europe. They have made sure that their venture caters to the taste buds of European food lovers and those with a sweet tooth as well, as the menu is a delicious blend of gourmet dishes and desserts to choose from. — TNS

Master Chef
Get cracking!
Kandla Nijhowne

Sometimes I'm in the mood to bake a simple yet delicious treat for the family and of course myself, but don't want a half-mile long list of ingredients to go chasing. Cheese crackers is one such delight which is perfect to nibble on anytime, anywhere! They are great at a party with a yoghurt dip, or with a cuppa. You can add chili flakes to give them heat. Don't care for chilli? Work in a smattering of sesame

seeds for a nutty flavour and a crunch. I usually make a monstrous batch of dough, then divide it into three parts. One section gets a generous dose of chilli flakes, the other is flavoured with sesame seeds and the last lump gets a sprinkling of oregano. Just for kicks, I cut rounds, squares and sticks to differentiate between them, as if visual identification isn't enough. Stored in air tight jars, these crackers come in handy and have a reasonable shelf-life. The trouble is they don't tend to remain on the shelf too long.

Cheese crackers

Ingredients

  • 100-150 gm sharp cheese (like cheddar)
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1 cup maida
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½-¾ tsp chilli flakes (depending on how hot you like it)
  • 1-1½ tbsp milk

Method

  • Grate the cheese and keep aside.
  • Preheat oven to 350° F, lightly grease a baking sheet.
  • Stir together the softened butter, ¾ cup maida, salt, cheese and chilli flakes till well blended. Do not over mix. The left over maida can be used for dusting while rolling, as and when needed. (You can use a food processor too)
  • Pour a spoonful of milk, then milk stir until a dough forms. Only add more milk if needed.
  • Use your fingertips to form the dough into a ball, using minimal pressure and contact.
  • Flatten onto a floured work surface and roll out to 1/8" thick.
  • Use a pizza cutter and cut into one inch squares or use a cookie cutter to stamp out discs.
  • Transfer crackers to the prepared baking sheet. You can place them fairly close together, they will puff up, but not spread much.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes, until edges start to brown. Do not over cook. Let them cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 10-15 days.

(Nijhowne is a Chandigarh-based culinary expert)

Note: For easy variations, replace the chilli flakes with crushed pepper, sesame seeds, oregano or jeera.

Lovel Arora has directed more than 250 music videos in his career span of 14 years. His favourite is the one he's shooting currently around Manikpur dargah.

This sufiana song is sung by Lakhwinder Wadali and is being shot on him and Geeta Basra.

Lovel is all praises for both. "Lakhwinder is meticulous in his job, Geeta brings with her years of experience," says Lovel who directed Geeta three years back in Sukhshinder Shinda's video.

Having worked with who's who of Punjabi singers, including Gurdas Maan, Daler Mehandi, Hans Raj Hans, Mika and others, says Lovel "I love my profession. New singers, culling out new concepts everyday keeps me charged."

Having worked with two generations —Wadali Brothers and Lakhwinder Wadali—Lovel compares the two, "Wadalis are super when it comes to singing. Lakhwinder brings a freshness with his songs though his father's stamp is unmistakably there on all his works.

The song Yaar de de dildaara is sufiana in style and shot at the dargah and natural surroundings. Ajay has co-directed this song with Lovel. Ask Lovel if he wants to direct a Punjabi movie next, "I haven't considered it so far. If a mind blowing script comes my way, may be." Good thought!

In the backdrop of crumbling marriages in Bollywood, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan feels that it's unfair to limit and judge relationships. Salman’s gesture left Aamir embarrassed

Superstar Salman Khan has been promoting his friend Aamir Khan's Dhoom 3 on reality show Bigg Boss - season 7. The latter is embarrassed by the Dabangg star's gesture.

"I will give full credit to Salman (for the craze around Dhoom 3). I was talking to him sometime back and told him that 'You have completely embarrassed me and please what are you doing," the 48-year-old said. "He said, 'Let me do what I am doing'. But that is his love and affection and I hope I can also do something for him and I definitely will," he added.

Aamir is eagerly waiting for Salman-starrer Jai Ho. He believes his Andaz Apna Apna co-actor has grown as an actor in the past few years.

"I am sure that Jai Ho will be a brilliant film. Whenever there is a Salman Khan-film we all wait for it eagerly, even I! I am also a big fan of his like you all. This is true that as an audience, I can say that his work has improved in the past three to four years," Aamir said. "I loved Dabangg and I feel happy. I think he is growing as an actor and I am really waiting to see Jai Ho. The title is also very good," he added. — IANS

Dhoom 3 releases in Pakistan

Dhoom 3 becomes the first film to release in Pakistan after the ban. A court order had been passed in Pakistan stating that no Indian film will be censored or released in Pakistan.

The order had been issued in response to a petition filed by TV talk show host Mubashir Lucman. It is reportedly the consequence of a conflict among TV channels in Pakistan. The move was allegedly masterminded by one of the channels which did not get the telecast rights of several Bollywood films. While other films have been releasing via UK, YRF has done the unbelievable. They have secured a release directly in Pakistan.

Khans whether Aamir, Shah Rukh or Salman, have a special fan following in Pakistan. D3 is specially a content that will be liked by 8 to 80 years of age and it is the most popular franchise in India.

Avtar Singh Panesar, vice president, International Operations at YRF, says, "Pakistan is a very important and special market for us and we are delighted that Dhoom 3 will release as planned to coincide with its global release date Friday 20. The film was cleared without a single cut by the Sindh censor board and we're thrilled about that. We wish to extend our gratitude to the authorities for their support to ensure that business for producers as well as the local Pakistani distributors and exhibitors is protected."

Aamir Khan says, "We are very happy that our minimal and traditional promotional strategy has worked. It is a very big deal that Dhoom 3 is officially releasing in Pakistan because we know how much they love us and our films. We are grateful for their enthusiasm and co-operation."

Dhoom in Kashmir

Yash Raj Films, the makers of Dhoom 3, are in talks with the Kashmir Valley authorities and government to open a theatre there so that people can enjoy Hindi movies. Dhoom 3 can be the first one.

After marriage to Dr Shriram Nene in 1999, the superstar relocated to the US. In 2011, she shifted her base back to Mumbai along with her family.

Both her children and husband love being in India and are quite happy shifting here. Nargis to romance Salman?

Big banners always take time to come out with the names of their star cast after announcement of a particular film. Reason being the makers have to take all accounts into consideration when there is a big name in the male lead.

We are talking about Sooraj Barjatya's upcoming film that has Salman Khan as the hero. Earlier, a lot of names like Anushka Sharma, Kareena Kapoor and Ileana D'Cruz and of late Deepika Padukone were doing the rounds.

But now it is being heard that Nargis Fakhri has been apparently approached to be part of this particular project of Rajshri Pictures.

It is said that though lot many names were considered for the project, the makers thought it was fit to approach Nargis as they were looking for a relatively new face.

A fruitful wait

There is this buzz that I will be singing in Marathi during my tour of Maharashtra. But let me clarify that I am a perfect cook. I don't like to serve my dish half-cooked. I am still learning Marathi and will sing a song only when I am fully ready with my product.

Solo acts and collaborations

I am an artiste and I love to explore opportunities and learn new and different things. Whether I have to perform solo or not, I only concentrate on delivering the best. If I am ready and want to explore more things, I am also ready to be explored by others.

Acting debut

I am doing a Hindi film for my dear friend Himesh (Reshammiya). I cannot divulge much at this stage. It's an interesting role and will be a whole new experience for me. I am going to start shooting for the film in January. Besides that, I am gearing up for my Tamil debut with Kolaveri Di producer Anirudh Ravichander. I am also doing some international and Arabic collaborations.

Hit songs

Blue Eyes has become such a big hit. We got 3.5 million views in five days. I love it more as it is my solo song without the backing of a movie or star. I remember Shah Rukh Khan just couldn't refuse Lungi Dance when he heard it. Kareena Kapoor Khan insisted on having Angrezi Beat in Cocktail and the song needed clearance from three different companies. I owe a lot to the team of Cocktail as those songs have definitely made me more popular.

Celebrating success

It's too early to celebrate my success. I think I have achieved only a small percentage of what I plan to attain. But I won't deny that the response I have got for my songs is overwhelming. It's a celebration when my songs are a hit especially Blue Eyes, which has crossed 15 million hits.
