Marriage woes
Mona

Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan called it quits; now Hrithik Roshan’s thirteen-year-old marriage is over. So what’s with celebrity marriages going wrong after so many years of togetherness? We find out…

Childhood sweethearts who face all the odds together, are photographed smiling hand-in-hand, giving these ‘happily married’ interviews and then carrying on the starry journey…on the face of it many couples look just made for each other, till one day they head for splitsville!

Aamir Khan-Reena Dutta, Saif Ali Khan-Amrita Singh and recently Hrithik Roshan-Sussanne have parted ways; that too after years of courtship, marriage and kids!

Individual call

Divorces have today become a trend. Chandigarh-based sociologist Kiranpreet Kaur blames it on increasing emphasis on individuality. “Marriage calls for lots of adjustments. Sadly, compatibility and integrity are fast disappearing from life. If both partners want to live a life on their own terms, marriage cannot last,” says Kiranpreet.

Yes, divorces are increasing in general, but celebrities have seldom enjoyed marital bliss. Ironically, those who have the money, fame, success and love of millions of fans have lacked marital bliss. Marriages hardly last long in the film industry, not only in Bollywood but in the West too. We have seen the infamous splits — Brad Pitt-Jennifer Aniston, Tom Cruise–Katie Holmes, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony! These fairytale romances had the fans hooked — the couples had the good looks, were hugely successful; painted the town red with display of mutual affection only to end up parting ways.

While some marriages break, there have been chinks noticed in the longest running marriages as well — Dilip Kumar-Saira Bano, Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya Bachchan. What ails celeb marriages? When millions of fans are ready to die for the stars, why do their spouses decide to walk away on them? Rahul Mittra, producer of films like Bullett Raja, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns, blames it on the complicated creative process. “Being an actor, producer or director is so time-consuming and the pressure is so huge that it gets tad tough to balance personal and professional life. We often joke about widows of cinema. Your spouse, if he or she is not from the industry, has to be even more understanding to pull it on,” says Rahul.

Moving on: (L-R) Amrita-Saif, Brad-Jennifer and Tom-Katie.

Choosing the right script, shooting that takes one away for months, post production, promotion, release and thinking of the next step always keeps stars in the industry unsettled. “The creative process and high stakes keep one so engrossed that there are times when I don’t even want to respond. But then there in this mad world, relationships are the first causality.” Actor Mita Vashisht believes marriage is not just about taking the vows, but much beyond. “Marriage is also about friendship, commitment, families, kids, money and much more. A couple, celebrity or not, needs to work on the relationship on a daily basis. Sadly they break, as much in the glamour world as outside. Looks, fame, success are outer things; they cannot save a marriage for it works on a very deep level.”

Divya Dutta agrees with Mita, but has seen divorces happen in celeb and non-celeb friends equally. “The very concept of staying together, like our parents, is no more applicable. Today be it men or women, they are open to options and also living independently,” says Divya Dutta.

Author Rahul Saini has caught the pulse of his readers well. He uses metaphors to connect with the present generation

Line magic: Rahul Saini. Photo: Pradeep Tewari

An influx of literary festivals is the latest to divide the fraternity. There are those who moonlight the cause of literature while others would prefer a restricted access to things.

Rahul Saini relies on the metaphor, and speaks of booze and books in the same breath. "Somewhere too many of literature festivals definitely dilute the concept but it's still better than having booze parties," laughs the 31-year-old author, while sitting at Browser's, Chandigarh, and gearing up for a literature festival to be held in Panchkula. "I'll be talking about my upcoming work, which is a series of two books — the first being titled Paperback Dreams."

After Those Small l'l things in Life and Love, Just Like In The Movies and The Orange Hangover, it's a take on the minds and lives of the youngsters, albeit a little differently. "What disappoints me as an author is that many take to writing for the fame aspect of it. All that some people want is the high of seeing their name on a book, and their book on the shelves."

Recalling some of his favourites, he says, "The Three Investigators influenced more than the usual Hardy Boys and Enid Blytons. Then later it was Robin Cook and Erich Segal."

Fairy tales somewhere find a mention too. "It's been two years since I've been working on the work that involves the supernatural. I've explored the idea of immortality." It's a stark graduation from talking about the youngsters in urban India. From creating a world where the boy gifts his girlfriend a soap, an architect loses his job and the like.

"There was a time when I used to love romantic comedies; now I cannot stand them,' shares the boy who was once an architecture student and now a faculty. "I like to only teach the first-year students. They are like wild horses and there is certain energy about them."

Pet passion
Bundles of joy
Manpriya Singh

When things are meant to be, all it takes is a question to possess them. "We went to our friends place in Doon School and saw a lovely English Mastiff. It was only a matter of expressing our desire and they offered him to us as they found it difficult to take care of him," shares Rumeena Singh. That is the story behind six-year-old Hannibal. Late acquisition, nevertheless, entitled them to joys of first ownership.

She laughs, "I gave him the name Hannibal. His earlier name was King, which I didn't really like."

She adds, "English mastiffs can be unpredictable but he is the gentlest dog ever." Love is all that the dogs need. She adds, "From day one, he's behaved as if he has never been away from us." There's a trivia worth sharing on the breed too. "Hannibal was considered one of the greatest military commanders. Some of the research also throws that he was a Punic Carthagean, which was a kingdom that existed before Christ. She adds, "We've tried to find one like him but neither the judges at the dog show nor anybody else has ever seen a thing like this." It's very rare that sheer pleasure and pride come from the same source.

Love me, love my dog

Moving on, there's also the-two-year old Basset Hound, interestingly called Oink. The spontaneous name comes inspired from a pizza menu. She laughs, "He is our son's puppy but he comes and just jumps up to sit in my lap wherever he is. He does this as if it is his right." That's not where their bundle of joys ends. Neo, named after his breed Neapolitan, guards the house and completes the family. "Neo is genetically predisposed to being a guard dog. No one can enter our house if he is outside. Yet he is the most playful and lovable dog with family." She adds, "He has learnt to run in circles around the dining table whenever we try to catch him for a bath and we very often have to give up despite offering him all kinds of inducements." When in a reverse mood, puppies can as hard to tackle as a tantrum throwing child. Together the three bagsful are worth all the efforts.

Yours faithfully

Whatever the stories behind how they came into the house, there are a couple of things all pet owners stand in unanimity over. "All three of them come and sit wherever I am. Just give them love and they are yours. They take away your worries and stress at the end of the day." That sums it all up.

Together they Rock!
Amarjot Kaur

The two most remarkably distinct contributions of Parikrama, an Indian rock band, is perhaps their capacity to be consistently performing live shows across Asia and their core belief on de-commercialising music. While the band remains one of the country's finest bands, they advocate rather strongly that the music be free. On Friday night, while they performed a live gig at the Underdoggs, they remained as focused on their territorial base as they played some of their original tracks, including Am I Dreaming, Tears of the Wizard, Whiskey Blues, Load Up and a recent addition to their assortment of songs, called, Where You Gonna Go.

"We composed this one just about a couple of hours ago," announced Nitin Malik, the lead vocalist of the band. Needless to say, the announcement was followed by a hooting lot of crowd giving in to another round of "cheers".

Parikrama, which is officially an opening band for Iron Maiden in Asia, brought about a series of songs, which were their own rendition of Guns and Roses, towards the end of the concert, some of which were Paradise City and O Sweet Child O'mine. However, the middles remained their regular jugalbandis and instrumentals the finest of which were by Imran Khan on the violin and Shambu Nath on tabla-a concoction of contemporary Indian rock, served at its best.

"Who in this digital download era has the time to buy an album, unless they are really fond of the artist!" says Srijan Mahajan, the drummer as he reasons their belief in promoting free music.

The band has often made candid confessions about their social media presence on Facebook and reverbnation, from where their fans could possibly pick-up the songs that they like and compile an album about the same. "I believe that music should be free and if you like the songs, download it or come to our gigs. We guys do regular gigs, at least 7-8 a month," says Nitin, the lead vocalist. On them being the official opening band for Iron Maiden, he shares, "They have always been an inspiration for us and they are a bunch of very humble and grounded musicians. It's overwhelming to do the opening for them."

In the recent times, where we hear bands splitting up even before they come up with their first album, Parikrama stands rock solid as it celebrates the 22nd year of their coming together as a rock and roll band. On being questioned about what makes them stick together, Imran Khan, the violinist, who has been with the band for over 10 years now says, "Love, love and love for each other and for music!"

Nostalgia on Nach Baliye 6

Our favourite jodis from previous seasons once again enter Nach Baliye to relive their journey and give yet another memorable performance. Krishna-Karishma Shah, Neelu- Arvind, Nisha-Karan and Rahul Mahajan came on the show to encourage and support the contestants.

While everyone was very excited to be back on the show, they were equally thrilled to perform again on the dance floor.

The former Nach Baliye jodis floored the judges and the current season couple with their brilliant performances. Krishna and Karishma, who were one of the favourite seasons in season 3, set the stage on fire with their electrifying performance on a peppy number. The much-in-love couple Nisha and Karan left the audience awe-struck with their romantic performance. The couple was overjoyed when the judges applauded them for their breathtaking performance. This is not all. Neelu aka Bhabho and Arvind got extremely emotional when they were shown a few highlights from their last season's performance.

The couple performed on a medley of Govinda hits, bringing back memories of their hilarious performances from the last season.

Rahul Mahajan, who came alone on the show, tickled everyone's funny bone with his comic timing. This is just the beginning, as the current contestants have taken the level of dancing a notch higher. While there were some brilliant performances don't forget to miss which couple will bid adieu to the stage of Nach Baliye next.

Kriya is back

Shakti Mohan returns to Dil Dosti Dance-D3 as the popular character Kriya. Back on the show after almost a year's break, Shakti is excited to share her experiences.

Why did you return to D3 now?

When I left my track was getting over and now when the channel approached me, I realised the track was exciting so I took it up. I am happy to be back on D3 and to learn from the show.

Is it a permanent role or a cameo?

It is a permanent role. Kriya, who had gone to New York like I did in real life, will now help her friends establish the academy. So there's lots of chemistry and dance to look forward to on the show.

How much do you credit D3 for your success?

A lot; I think my fans from this show are tremendous. Ever since I left they have been writing to me to come back. I am thankful for the opportunity.

What did you do last year?

When I left for New York to study dance, I did a documentary on dance for BBC Worldwide. Then I did the song Preetam Pyaare, a dance calendar shot by Suresh Natrajan. I also assisted Vaibhavi Merchant for a song in Dhoom 3 called Kamli. I was part of Rahman's concert as well.

What else is coming up?

I will be seen in a song in Subhash Ghai's film Kanchi with my sister Mukti. The song is sung by my other sister Neeti. I also have a song in an upcoming Rajshri film. I also shot for I-pad ad, which was a big moment for me.

She adds, "Also the way people have started loving Gunjan and the kind of response I get in public is something that has never happened before. I am grateful to Gunjan for that. From Bangalore to Mumbai, my journey career-wise has been fantastic. Fame hasn't changed me one bit. I am the same person I was."

Nargis’ chocolate cravings!

Of late, actress Nargis Fakhri has been craving for chocolates. "I love ice-cream but today is a chocolate day. I had bounty bar and coffee chocolate and chocolate with almonds. Omg," the 34-year-old actress confessed on Twitter.

When a fan pointed out that she needs to eat more because she's too thin, she replied: "Haha, 63 kilo... that's not skinny. That's regular. I'm fit."

In the mean time, the Rockstar actress has made some short-term goals. "I made mini goals this morning... have you made yours? 1. Make yoga & meditation as important as eating and sleeping in my life. 2. Be conscious of the words I speak to others/about others/ about myself and to myself. Speak with love only. PMA positive mental attitude. 3. Trust yourself, your instincts, love yourself, make time for balancing yourself. So far that's it. LOL, wait. 4. Laugh... laugh a lot in life. Joint account

Bipasha and Harman to do joint endorsements?

Bipasha Basu and Harman Baweja are quite a couple even if they may not admit it. As a result, their romance is proving profitable to them and they are getting offers to endorse products together.

A source tells us, "Bipasha has several endorsements in her kitty, especially ones related to health and fitness, so they feel teaming her with Harman might be a good option. The makers feel their real life pairing can add to the deal."

Adds the source, "They have, however, not yet said yes to the offers."

With Bipasha frequently being spotted at Harman's home in Lokhandwala, it looks like the couple is keen to take their relationship to the next level. They have been together for a few months and are serious about each other, the insider adds. It is a private relationship and there is hardly any pressure on them.

Though the two are often seen together at various nightspots in the city, the lovebirds haven't yet stated anything about the status of their relationship. Bipasha has maintained that Harman is someone she bonds well with. Harman even visited her in London where she was shooting for Humshakals. They often take off to Goa for quality time together and Bipasha even took two days off last month to celebrate his birthday.

Bromance in Gunday!

Rumours were rife that while shooting for Gunday, the duo Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh would get very spirited and compete with each other on the sets. Reportedly, the actors wanted to ensure getting equal number of dialogues and scenes.

However, the two actors apparently bonded well on the sets. They eventually bonded over gym and jokes.

Ranveer shared some candid shots of him with co-star Arjun on Twitter. Ranveer and Arjun play thieves called Bikram and Bala while Priyanka Chopra plays Nandita.

The film has been extensively shot in Mumbai and Kolkata and the makers have denied the film isn't a love-triangle. The story is based on the life of two thugs and you can expect some bromance!

Priyanka does cabaret

Take a look at Priyanka Chopra's character Nandita in Gunday. She is a cabaret dancer and she sure looks hot! The film is a love triangle between Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, and Arjun Kapoor.

Amidst the performances, she was invited on stage where she sung two lines of her song Kiran from the film Darr. We hear that Juhi has been supporting this NGO founded by Sarlaben Seth for the last 10 years.

Shraddha’s tantrums

Apparently, Shraddha Kapoor was upset that she was put up in a special room at a five-star hotel in Srinagar instead of a suite. So she was shifted to another hotel due to lack of availability and then shifted back to the first hotel. The makers of the movie deny this incident.

Layers of art
Amarjot Kaur

Jaya, a Chandigarh-based artist, spreads joy, hope and positivism through her solo exhibition Rebirth. Photo: Pradeep Tewari

There is something about the artists, who have the capacity to stimulate a thought. Rebirth, the first solo painting exhibition by Jaya, a city-based artist, displays intellectually stimulating works.

As she explains her attempt to design, decipher, and imagine, she elaborates on her works, "I paint whatever comes to my mind and the contents of my paintings convey joy, hope and positivism," says Jaya, who hails from Karwar and is now settled in Chandigarh.

At the Sobha Singh Art Gallery of Punjab Kala Bhawan, her paintings demonstrate an amalgam of contemporary, abstract and figurative art. However, Jaya, who has been painting since childhood confesses that it took her over a year to exhibit the paintings. In most of her paintings, she makes use of different layers and textures, which reflect highly on her experimental pursuit. "I barely address myself as an artist. I like experimenting," says she. Perhaps that reasons her jump from figurative abstract series, titled Desire, to painting scenic seascapes, which were interpreted as a painting from the pictures of Karwar, her hometown. Also, the black and white series on hope, enlightenment and dawn exude a keen contrast between the blazing yellows and orange to the bright reds, again in translucent layers of textures.

"I am fond of creating new and different textures. For this I make use of impressions, spatula and I also paint with my hands. The medium that I paint in is acrylic on canvas, but I love using oil on canvas. The only restricting factor while painting with oil paints is that it takes much longer," says Jaya while adding, "I also make use of M-seal and acrylic to experiment with textures." The paintings are priced between Rs 6,000 to Rs 28,000.

On till December 15.

HEART talk
Wait and watch
Parvesh Rana

I am 27 years old and working in a private bank as an investment banker. Off late, for no apparent reason, my boss has started harassing me. He tries to take a dig at me all the time. I tried to ask him why but he says he doesn't want me in this office.
Ankit, Chandigarh

This sounds like a serious problem. But are you sure you have been giving your best at work? Also, hope you haven't misbehaved with him giving him a reason to detest you. Watch for a few more days and try to speak to him, I am sure this will help.

I am a 16-year-old girl. I am very fond of my music teacher. I think I am in love with him. I don't like when he gives similar attention to other students. What do I do?
Sahiba, Panchkula

This is something we all go through during our teenage years. Don't take it seriously, we call it crush and it fades away with time. I suggest concentrate on your music rather than your teacher.

Salman’s ‘mental’ status

Actor Salman Khan recently launched the trailer of his upcoming film Jai Ho amidst hundreds of his fans in Mumbai. The actor said his father didn't like the earlier title Mental and so it was changed to Jai Ho. He also spoke about Katrina, his rendezvous on Koffee With Karan, and more…

Mental Khan

Today, we have an intelligent Khan (Aamir Khan), Badshah Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) and Nawab Khan (Saif Ali Khan). So tomorrow, you might call me Mental Khan. I will not have a problem with it but other Khans would, especially my father Salim Khan.

Common man

I consider myself a common man. I like to do things that a common man does. I like to sit in a rickshaw or drive my cycle. There are times when I roll down my windows when I am travelling in my car.

Fans’ support

Whatever I am today is because of my fans. If they didn't love my films and my work, I wouldn't be here.

Rs 200 crore club

The first promo is the deciding factor for people whether they want to see the film or not. Today, it is not only about a film collecting Rs 200 or Rs 300 crores. Box office is not an ego game. There is no ego that if Shah Rukh's and Aamir's films have earned a certain amount, then my film should cross it. Every film should do well.

Koffee with Karan

My personality on Koffee with Karan is not what I am. It was just the format of the show and so I played. I might not answer a journalist, who will ask me similar questions, but might also answer when I know that he wants to convey my feelings to people.

Katrina Kaif: If Katrina Kaif is Kareena’s sister-in-law, than she is my sister-in-law too!
