Three robbers arrested

Panchkula, December 7
The Panchkula police arrested three robbers, who were involved in the robbing case of Subedar Major Neelkanth, a retired Indian Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), two months ago.

The accused Raghubir, Jaswinder and Karamvir were arrested after bringing them on production warrant from the Ambala Central Jail. Karamvir and Jaswinder are residents of Kurukshetra while Raghubir is from Ambala. The trio was recently nabbed by the Ambala police for robbery and thefts.

They were booked by the Barwala police for drugging and robbing Neelkanth, a resident of Khatoli village near Barwala, of Rs 60,000 on October 22 immediately after the victim had withdrawn the amount from a SBI branch at Barwala.

Today, the trio was produced before the Panchkula court, which sent them to judicial remand.

Taxi driver booked on rape charge

Chandigarh, December 7
A 27-year-old taxi driver was booked for allegedly raping his female friend on the pretext of marriage, in Sector 32 on Saturday. The accused, Sohail Kumar, a resident of Sector 49, is absconding.

The victim, a resident of Sector 32, in her complaint to the police alleged that the accused came in contact with her at the house in which she was employed. Later, he managed to establish physical relations with her after promising to marry her.

The victim has alleged that the accused refused to respond to her calls when she started requesting him to marry her. The crime took place between March and August this year.

The police said the FIR was registered after taking a legal opinion. A case was registered at the Sector 34 police station and investigations were on.

“Attempts are being made to nab the accused who is absconding,” the police said.

New Public thrash St Xavier’s

Chandigarh, December 7
New Public School, Sector 18, defeated hosts St Xavier`s Senior Secondary School Sector 44, in the finals of St Xavier’s Basketball Trophy, which ended today.

In the boys’ category, New Public School defeated St Xavier`s 30-28. In the girls category, the team of St Xavier`s lost to Guru Nanak Public School, Chandigarh 43-31. — TNS

CGA founder president’s portrait unveiled

The Chandigarh Golf Association (CGA), in remembrance of its founder president and patron late DP Azad unveiled a portrait at the Chandigarh Golf Range, here, today. The event began by observing a two-minute silence. It was followed by paying rich tributes to Azad. The portrait is installed at the entrance gate of the CGA golf range.

CSR Reddy, president, CGA, announced an annual golf championship for golf enthusiasts of the press and media on December 7 of every year. The competition will be an annual tournament and will be known as 1st Dronacharya DP Azad Annual Golf Championship for Press.

DP Azad, the cricket coach of world cup winning skipper Kapil Dev, has all credits to improve the golf infrastructure in the city through the project of golf range, situated near Kishangarh village.

“It was an emotional day for all for us. It was a gesture by the CGA. Every member of the association is well aware about my father’s closeness with golf. He was media-friendly and also closely associated with everyone. The tournament is specially introduced for mediapersons so that the bond between my father, golf and the media will remain there throughout” said Sanjiv DP Azad Aggarwal, Azad’s son. After unveiling the portrait, the tournament was conducted at the green of the Chandigarh Golf Range.

DPS beat Mount Carmel in cricket tournament

Chandigarh, December 7
Delhi Public School (DPS), Sector 40, defeated Mount Carmel School, by four wickets, in a match of 16th Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament, held here today.

After elected to bat first, the losing side scored 93 runs in the allotted slot of 20 overs.

Ramandeep Singh with 40 runs led the team’s score chart, while Jannat chipped in 21 runs.

For the bowling side, Shivansh and Japjeet claimed four wickets each. In reply, the Delhi Public School side scored 96 runs in 18.1 overs, with Vaibhav (28 runs) and Ishaan (15 runs) contributing the most runs. For the Mount Carmel side, bowler Amrit claimed three for 20.

In the second match, St Soldier’s defeated Shishu Niketan School by a margin of 113 runs. Batting first, the St Soldier’s side posted 207 runs with Mukul playing an unbeaten knock of 104 runs off 50 balls. His innings was studded by 16 well-timed boundaries. Shahrukh (37 runs) and Kartavya (30 runs) contributed further to the team’s score. In reply, the Shishu Niketan bundled out for 94 runs. For the losing side, Vishal claimed one for 50 and Satinder (19 runs) and Sahil (15 runs) were the main scorer.

While for St Soldier’s Ravinder claimed three for 20 along with Harshil (two for 20).

Volleyball meet
Athletics Club, Sports Complex win titles

Chandigarh, December 7
Players from Athletics Club and Sports Complex, Sector 46, won the junior category title of boys and girls, respectively, during the Chandigarh State Sub-Junior and Junior (boys and Girls) Volleyball Championship, held here today. In the junior boys’ category, the Athletics Club won the winning trophy with nine points in all league matches. The team of Shivalik Public School secured six points to secure the runners-up position.

In the Girls category, Sports Complex defeated Government Senior Secondary School-26 (25-17, 25-20 and 25-16). For the winning side, Shivani and Nabila displayed an extraordinary game while Bhawna and Poonam collected scores for the losing team. In the sub-junior girls’ category, the Government Model Senior Secondary School-26, defeated Sports Complex 25-22, 25-23 and 25-20. — TNS
