Falsely implicated: Accused
Chandigarh, December 6 Rahul was arrested by the police for the murder of Gaurang Sahu and his sister Kavita Sahu. The victims were found murdered at their residence in Sector 41, here, on December 16, 2011. As per the police, Rahul, a relative of the deceased, had killed the duo after Kavita objected to his advances, due to which Gaurang had a scuffle with him. The accused allegedly killed the two with a sharp-edged knife. “Inspector Amanjot arrested me from Mumbai and brought me to Chandigarh by air after the murder. I have been falsely implicated in the case and the police showed that I was arrested from Naraingarh,” he said. The police had claimed to have arrested Rahul, a resident of Raipur Rani, from Saha Chowk, Ambala, on January 18, 2012. But in his statement before the court on Friday, Rahul, denied having been arrested from Haryana. He further said all recoveries had been planted on him. “I did not visit any doctor for getting treatment as being alleged by the prosecution,” said Rahul, contradicting the evidence given by a doctor running a clinic in Saha, Amabla, who had claimed to have treated Rahul for his injury on his finger during a scuffle. The statements were recorded under Section 313 of the CrPC. |

Thieves strike at 12 shops in Mohali
Mohali, December 6 He claimed that some shopkeepers were present at their shops in the market till 1.30 am to 2 am. “At that time, everything was normal. The theft in all shops has taken place after that,” said Sharma. The thieves have taken away several laptops, mobile phones and cash from the shops. The targeted shops also included a beauty parlour, two grocery shops, mobile phone and computer shops and boutiques. The watchman of the market had left his job a week before following a tiff with a shopkeeper in the market, claimed shopkeepers. The shopkeepers had also held a meeting on December 3 to appoint a new watchman in the market. “We have begun investigation after registering a case in this regard,” said DSP (City II) Ajinder Singh. |

An event to remember: Winners
Chandigarh, December 6 The tournament saw the participation of 32 players. The players, in both categories of men and women, were vying for the top honours. On the basis of performances in this tournament, the participant will earn valuable AITA ranking points for national and international events. “The tournament attracted section of players from across the nation. The competition was good and I am happy that I succeeded in bagging the top honour in the final,” said Rimpledeep Kaur. “It’s good to see some top ranking players, marking their presence here. It feels good to compete with players, who are so experienced and good in what they do,” added Kaur. The winner of the singles’ category event, Kunal Anand, said, “The organisers have forwarded the concept in a very good manner and hopefully it will draw a lot of attention in the coming years. Such events boosts the morale of a player and motivates him to keep the good work going. I am happy that I participated in such a prestigious event. Winning the title has definitely encouraged me to put my best foot forward everytime.” Conducting The Tribune Cup on an annual basis will go a long way in making the sport receive a recognition, that it deserves, said an official from the organising team. During the closing ceremony, the president of The Tribune Trust, Justice SS Sodhi, congratulated the winners and announced that the ‘The Tribune Tennis Cup’ will be an annual event for promoting tennis in the region. “The event has been successfully conducted under the supervision of highly-qualified technical bench. Mount Carmel beat Gurukul
Chandigarh, December 6 The match was played at St John’s School, Sector 26, Chandigarh. Winning the toss, Mount Carmel School elected to bat first. The winning team began the inning well and by the end of the stipulated 20 overs, they managed to pile up a score of 137 runs. The team managed to score 137 runs efficiently with the loss of seven wickets. Rahul contibuted 35 runs to lead team to victory. The opposite team, however, bundled out at 72 runs, thereby losing the match by 66 runs. Vineet claimed three wickets for five runs. Amritpal too played a crucial role in team’s win and took two wickets for 12 runs and Kanav claimed two wickets for one run. Brief score Mount Carmel, Sector 47 - 137 for 7 in 20 overs, Rahul scored 35 runs, Amritpal 25 runs, Gaga claimed four wickets for 26 runs and Amit took three wickets for 18 runs. Audit Club clinched the title in the boy’s category (junior) after defeating DAV Public School, 3-0. Balwinder shines in cricket tourney
Chandigarh, December 6 The Chandigarh Women's Cricket Association organised the event. Winning the toss, IS Dev Samaj elected to bat first. The team played well and piled up a respectable total of 150 runs for the loss of two wickets in the stipulated 20-over match. Rishita’s inning of 58 runs helped the team to pile up a competitive score. From Sacred Heart School side, Suman and Ashmita took a wicket each. The eves of Sacred Heart School showed more endurance and the team comfortably achieved the target in 19.2 overs, with the loss of four wickets. Ashmita’s unbeaten knock of 40 runs played a vital role in leading the team on the path of victory. After the match, Kamlesh Kumar DPI (S), Chandigarh, gave away the prizes to the winners. Kumar appreciated the efforts of the association for promoting women cricket in Chandigarh. The president of association, Satinder Dhillon, thanked the chief guest for gracing the occasion. First runner-up trophy was given to IS Dev Samaj School, Sector 21, while GMSSS-56, won the second runner-up trophy. Poonam of IS Dev Samaj School was declared the best bowler of the tournament, while Balwinder of GMSSS-56 was given the best all-rounder trophy. Ashmita of Sacred Heart School won the best batting trophy. Annual golf meet today
Chandigarh, December 6 The meet titled 1st Dronacharya DP Azad Annual Golf Championship will be held at the Chandigarh golf range on December 7. In the quarterly meeting of the Executive Committee at the CGA Golf Range recently, the association also honoured the founder president and patron late DP Azad. The gathering observed two minutes silence on the occasion. The president of the CGA, CSR Reddy, the CGA has decided to put up Azad’s life-size portrait at the entrance gate of the golf range. |

Chandigarh, December 6 The PU director of physical education (DPE) and organising secretary of the championship, Dr Dalwinder Singh, said the teams can submit detailed entries for their participations till January 8.
