India set to become ODI top scorers
New Delhi, December 2
India and Australia are currently tied on 1,82,881 runs from 841 (a world record) and 825 matches respectively. Australia though have far better winning percentage, having won 505 matches as against 423 of India. Pakistan are at the third spot among countries which have scored most ODI runs with 1,71,982 from 807 matches, followed by Sri Lanka on 1,46,365 and the West Indies on 1,45,260. India are likely to remain on top for some time as they play five ODIs against New Zealand after the three-match South Africa series. Australia, on the other hand, play five ODIs against England after the Ashes series. During the South Africa tour, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is also expected to reach two personal milestones. He can become the Indian captain with highest ODI runs while leading the side. The record for most ODI wins by an Indian captain may also be his. Dhoni has so far scored 5,213 runs from 151 matches as captain and he is just 26 runs behind Mohammed Azharuddin who scored 5239 runs from 174 ODIs as skipper. If India sweep the three-match ODI series against South Africa, Dhoni will go past Azharuddin with regard to winning most number of ODI matches as skipper. Under Azharuddin's captaincy, India won 90 matches as against 88 under Dhoni's captaincy so far. Dhoni has already become the most successful Indian captain in Test cricket, having gone past Sourav Ganguly. However, Ganguly led India to more Test wins abroad than Dhoni has until now. So, the Indian captain has some work to do in Test cricket before he could stake claim to being the most successful Indian skipper in the longer format. And South Africa is perhaps the best place to start setting the record straight. — PTI Top run getters

BCCI wants lion’s share from ICC revenues
New Delhi, December 2 According to sources in the BCCI, N Srinivasan met the Cricket Australia chairman Walter Edwards in Singapore last week to discuss the profit-sharing model between the ICC and the member nations. The meeting took place when the eight IPL franchises were engaged in a two-day workshop in Singapore. “Srinivasan met the CA top boss and discussed how the profit-sharing model should be from the BCCI’s perspective. The moot point of discussion was that India generates close to 75 percent of the income for the parent body and hence the BCCI should get a greater share from the profits”, said a BCCI official. Currently, this is how the ICC's profit-sharing model works: 75 percent of the profit is equally divided among full member nations — India, Australia, Sri Lanka, England, Pakistan, New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The remaining 25 percent is distributed among the associate members. It is learnt that the BCCI's affiliated units are on the same page on the issue. “Srinivasan is not demanding a greater share for himself. The bulk of our earnings from the ICC will be pooled back into the development of the game. If earnings increase, the BCCI state units stand to gain more as annual grant," the official added. In fact, at the ICC's Financial and Commercial Affairs Committee meeting, the revenue-sharing model will come up for discussion and the BCCI is likely to get more than equal share of profit when the new commercial model is put in place for five years between 2015-2020. For that the BCCI will, however, have to wait till the end of the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as that’s when the existing commercial contracts expire. Meanwhile, it has been decided that all IPL franchises will pay their players (including foreign players) in Rupee (INR) instead of USD which has been the norm during the six previous editions. The cap for 'player retention' is likely to increase from four to five while the highest amount for retaining a player would be around Rs 12 crore. A concept called "right to match" is also going to be introduced during this year's auction where an existing franchise can veto the sale of a player currently in their squad. The franchises will be given a specific number of cards, known as 'Joker Cards', which will be used to veto the sale of a player, provided the franchise has enough money left with it. — PTI |
Mixed day for
gritty neighbours
Chola Sahib, December 2 It was a much-awaited contest and the Pakistan women did not disappoint, stretching the match till the last. Denmark had roped in Jiu Jitsu players and that made it count in the end. Crowds had gathered in big numbers to witness Pakistan players in action. Egged on by their cheering, the eves never let the tempo go down and led for majority of the time period. In the men's section Pakistan virtually ran over novices from Scotland, defeating them 63-26. England defeated Sierra Leone 41-34, while Canada virtually blanked Denmark 89-9. Canada and England teams mostly banked on players of Punjabi origin which gave a big advantage to them. Denmark coach Bikramjit Singh said, “Jiu Jitsu is a form of martial arts and ground fighting. The girls in Denmark are well versed in the art and that's why the girls opted for this sport." Pakistan's women team is the only new entrant in the tournament while all the other teams have been participating for the last two years. Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal along with Cabinet Minister Sikandar Singh Maluka and former minister Ranjit Singh Brahmpura laid the foundation stone of state-of-art sports stadium at Chohla Sahib. It is pertinent to mention here that Badal had announced to bring up the stadium last year also but nothing was done. Sidelites Italian touch at Kabaddi World Cup: The district administration went overboard to arrange pizzas and chicken lasagna for the deputy CM, thinking he might ask for it. During the entire day, the officials could be heard talking about it. Unfortunately, their preparations came to a naught as the deputy chief minister had to leave early without tasting the delicacies. Better late than never: Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal laid the foundation stone of a state-of-art stadium at Chohla Sahib. It took some time coming as the deputy chief minister had made the announcement during the last edition of the event. Results

Pak eves promise to get better
Chola Sahib, December 2 After the match, they vowed to get better and better with every new game. Captain Madiha Latif, a national level hammer thrower, said, "Initially, the team did face problems as the game is not played in Pakistan. It's still considered as a men's game. With each passing day, the players are gaining confidence. The organizers have engaged psychologists to motivate players and it is working wonders." Madiha is not disheartened with today's loss, "It was our first match so it's fine. We will get better in the next and put up a good overall performance in the tournament. We are keen to get a grand welcome back home." Vice-captain Sumira Zahoor said, "We took up the game to prove that women are no less than men. We can also excel if we are provided with good facilities and support." When the team took to the field they were covered till their knees so as not to create a controversy back home. Coach Mohammad Ali Sahid said, “Our religion forbids women to expose even their knees.” He said this was the reason some of the probables were apprehensive and did not participate in the tournament even though they were selected. The star attraction of the team is 39-year-old Zeenat Perveen, Asian gold medalist in hammer throw, and Agasta Ajmal, (15), who professes Christianity. |

Netherlands confident of win against India
New Delhi, December 2 "The team is very tough and stable and we are geared up for the challenge. All the teams are strong and anyone can win a match on the given day. But the boys are confident about their first match against India and we aim to start this tour with a win," Marijne said after Netherlands’ second practice session at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. Marijne's views were backed by Netherlands team manager and Olympian Floris Evers. "I am waiting to see my friends from Ranchi Rhinos. Here I am as a team manager and my job is to share my experiences and guide them to give their best game during the tournament," said Evers, who played for Ranchi Rhinos in the Hockey India League. "The players in this team have the speed and are good with technical aspect of the game and we are confident of our opening match (against India)." Evers also spoke highly about India captain Manpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh, who were his teammates in Ranchi Rhinos. "They are my friends and I am waiting to meet them here. I am hoping that Mandeep plays as well as he did in the HIL last year. For me the toughest players in the Indian side are these two and I hope we see Indian and Netherlands in the final." — PTI |
England call Bresnan for Adelaide Test
Sydney, December 2 Bresnan, who suffered a stress fracture in his back which ruled him out of the final test of the first Ashes series earlier this year, which the hosts won 3-0, travelled to Australia with England's Performance Programme. Having proved his fitness, Bresnan's stock rose as, apart from Stuart Broad, England's attack disappointed in the first test at Brisbane, which Australia won by 381 runs largely on the back of aggressive pace bowling. It rose even further after more disappointing bowling in England's two-day tour match in Alice Springs last weekend. The 28-year-old was a key member of the squad which won the Ashes in Australia in 2010-11, taking 11 wickets in the final two tests at an average of 19.54 as England sealed a 3-1 triumph. He also played a major role in England's victory in the fourth test of the first series earlier this year, scoring 45 runs in the second innings then taking the key wickets of David Warner and Shane Watson as England won by 74 runs. Chris Tremlett is likely to give way for Bresnan if he is selected for the Adelaide test, which starts on Thursday. Root or Bell to bat at three
Joe Root and Ian Bell are the two candidates to replace Jonathan Trott at number three in the England batting order for this week's second Ashes test in Adelaide, batting coach Graham Gooch said on Monday. Bell, playing in the middle order, was widely regarded as the difference between the two sides in England's 3-0 win at home in the first Ashes series of the year when he scored three centuries. Root opened the batting with his captain Alastair Cook against Australia in England before dropping down to number six for the Gabba test, where he scored two and a determined 26 not out in his two innings. "Whoever moves up to number three, and it's probably fair to say that Joe Root and Ian Bell are the two candidates, I'm sure they'll stand up for England, that's what they've got to do," Gooch said. "I'm not a believer (that) you've got to be very careful about looking after people in what number they bat. If you're asked to bat three, four, five or six, whatever, you have to do that job." — Reuters Announcer hits back
The ground announcer who was stood down for allegedly introducing England spinner Monty Panesar in a mock Indian accent, is seeking clarification from Cricket Australia (CA) over his removal after denying any slur was made. CA had deemed the conduct of David Nixon, a producer for local broadcaster ABC, at the Alice Springs ground as inappropriate and withdrew him during the second day of England's two-day warm-up match against a Chairman's XI. "It comes as a complete surprise to me to be at the centre of a controversy about racial slurring, and I absolutely refute any allegation that I feigned an Indian accent," Nixon said. — Reuters |

Messi-less Barca under pressure
Madrid, December 2 “This Is Not Our Barca!” Sport headlined on Monday on its front page. El Mundo Deportivo went with “Another Death by Asphyxiation” in reference to Bilbao’s relentless pressure, the same tactic that helped Ajax beat the Spanish champions 2-1 in the Champions League. Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino has tinkered with the team’s style of play since he took over this season. At the expense of some the Catalan club’s aesthetically pleasing play of one-touch football, the changes had netted results until last week. “We’re going to lose some games and we’re not going to like it, and that will generate all types of questions but we don’t have to throw everything out the window. There’s no reason to see it all so negatively,” Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta said. “We just couldn’t score after having occasions and dominating parts of the game.” Barcelona created chances late in the second-half on Sunday at the San Mames but couldn’t beat Bilbao goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz. Martino also alluded to Messi’s absence being a factor with the team’s lack of finishing up front. “We just couldn’t find that last pass to help us finish it off,” the Argentine coach said. “What is disconcerting is when a team doesn’t know what to do, but I didn’t see that my team didn’t know what to do.” — Agencies |
