Residents move HC over property tax
Tribune News Service

Mohali, November 26
After the protest by the Congress against the imposing of property tax here, local residents have knocked the doors of the Punjab and Haryana High Court over the issue.

The Social Welfare Association (SWA), Phase 2, here, and former municipal councillor Kuljit Singh Bedi have filed two writ petitions in the high court in this regard.

In their petition, the Social Welfare Association stated that the GMADA had crores at its disposal that have collected through various forms of taxes/fees from the allottees/residents of Mohali.

"As the property tax is proposed to be imposed in the name of development charges, it has been imposed here without considering the factual position regarding the financial status of the Municipal Corporation, Mohali, and GMADA and ignoring the fact that such charges have already been paid and are being paid by the residents."

While pleading the court to withdraw the notification in this regard, the petitioner also stated that the tax on residential and commercial units in Mohali would be much higher as compared to Chandigarh and Panchkula and imposition of the tax was illegal, arbitrary and unjust.

Association's counsel Chaman Lal Pawar said: "We have filed the petition today but the registry branch has raised certain objections on its maintainability. We would file our reply in this regard."

On the other hand Bedi's petition has been admitted by the court.

"The hearing would take place tomorrow," Bedi added.
