Congress policies aimed only at winning polls: Modi
BJP's prime ministerial candidate was addressing an election meeting in Dwarka

New Delhi, November 23
Attacking the Congress for its "arrogance" and "born to rule" mindset, Narendra Modi today accused the party of formulating policies aimed at only winning elections and not for the country or its future.

Addressing an election meeting in Dwarka here today, ahead of December 4 Delhi assembly polls, BJP's prime ministerial candidate said the Congress has frequently changed its names, symbols and policies but not intentions.

"The Congress party has admitted that God has created it to rule. They think they are born to rule and people are in our pocket...Where will they go...Sometimes show them the fear of Modi...And gain votes. Congress people are used to enjoying the rule...

"All its policies are aimed at winning elections and not for the nation and neither for its future. If something that has not changed in Congress, it is its intention. 'Inki niyat aisi hai, uss niyat ko le kar desh ka bhala nahin ho sakta' (Their intentions are such that the nation can never benefit from it," he said.)

Modi also launched an attack on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, accusing him of not uttering a single word despite the price rise that has hit the poor and common man.

"During Atal Bihari Vajpayee's regime inflation was at 3.9 per cent. Now under an economist Prime Minister, it is more than 11 per cent. If price rise continues to rise like this, what will the poor eat. The Prime Minister is not ready to take the blame for price rise," he said.

Accusing the Congress of its arrogance, Modi said even though he sought an apology for coming late for today's rally, he said the Prime minister was not ready for taking the blame over price rise.

"Unka ahankar itna hai, mehngai par ek shabd bolne ko tayar nahin hain...Mehngayi ka M tak nahin bole. Maro to maro aap ka naseeb (Their arrogance is such that they are not ready to utter a single word, not even the M of Mehngayi. You die, it is your fate," he said.

Modi also launched a scathing attack on the Sheila Dikshit government in Delhi saying while she questions him over the Gujarat model of development, she has been unable to provide even basic drinking water to residents of the capital even after 15 years of its rule.—PTI

New Delhi, November 23
Stung by the controversial CD, the Aam Aadmi Party got a shot in the arm today as thousands of people thronged Jantar Mantar to attend its musical concert in the evening. The party took the opportunity to reach out to its supporters with its promises mentioned in poll manifesto.

Kumar Vishwas kicked off the rally at 4 pm to an eager crowd and the party members couldn't help rejoicing by looking at the sea of white Aam Aadmi caps flooding the site. Arvind Kejriwal was greeted with a deafening applause as he arrived at around 5:30 pm. Bhagat Singh's grand nephew also attended the rally and lent his support to the debutant party.

The rally took on a festive atmosphere as many of the well-known names of the Indian film music industry not only addressed the crowd but also gave tunes that the crowd followed as the frenzy reached a crescendo with the Delhi youth pledge to "Vote for Change".

The rally ended with an address by Arvind Kejriwal who got a resounding cheer from the crowd. Arvind expressed satisfaction at how Delhi has responded to the rally saying that it is a prelude to the Delhi assembly results.

The AAP leadership, including Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Bhushan, Sanjay Singh, Manish Sisodia besides Arvind Kejriwal, explained the elements of change they propose for Delhi, including decentralisation through mohalla sabhas, bringing Delhi Police under Delhi government and keeping the MCD out of its purview.

On the occasion, several candidates of AAP were introduced to the large crowd amidst cheers.

The rally was also addressed by some supporters from the Mumbai film industry: Jasleen Royale, Kavita Seth, Aditi Singh Sharma, Shilpa Rao, Ranveer Shourey, Chang, members of the band Agni - Moha and Koko, Vishal Dadlani, Rabbi Shergill, Soni ji, Manoj Sehrawat and Shruti Pathak.

New Delhi, November 23
A 37-year-old Aam Aadmi Party volunteer allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in northeast Delhi today, due to personal reasons.

The man has been identified as Arvind Malik, who lived with his family at Arjun Mohalla in Jafrabad. He supported an AAP candidate, Gopal Rai, who was contesting the Delhi Assembly elections from Seelampur.

According to the police, he shot himself in the head inside his house at about 8.45 am. He used a licensed pistol of his brother-in-law, which was recovered from the site of the incident by the police.

"His family found him lying in a pool of blood when they rushed to his room after hearing the gunshot," said a police officer.

The police are ruling out foul play in the incident, because the room was locked from inside. They have not found a suicide note.

A call was made to the police control room and Malik was taken to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Investigating officers later questioned Malik's family, who revealed that he was under severe depression for the past couple of months. "Our probe has ruled out any volunteer work-related stress as having triggered the step," the officer said.

Cong running personal campaign against Modi, says Goel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November, 23
Attacking the Congress, Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel today said that the party has stooped to a new low by running a personal campaign against BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. Both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party are targeting the BJP, indicating that they are hand in glove with each other, he added.

Apparently the reaction follows after the pamphlets targeting Modi were distributed today which, according to the BJP, is nothing but an act of desperation by the Congress and it only reflects its frustration at the growing popularity of Modi.

Highlighting the 'failures' of the Congress government at a rally at Dwarka today, Goel said, "The Congress knows that it has lost politically in Delhi and elsewhere. So it has stooped to a new low in electoral politics by trying to tarnish the image of Modi."

"The fact that the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party have resorted to similar smear campaigns against BJP leaders is another proof that they are working together," Goel said.

SP releases manifesto; won't support BJP
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 23
As the Samajwadi Party released its manifesto for the Delhi Assembly elections today, they were reticent about which party they would support after the polls, while making it clear that they would not support the Bharatiya Janata Party.

"The BJP supports communalism. What happened in Gujarat (the riots), they plan to do that across India. So we won't support them," said senior SP leaders.

On being asked if the SP would support the Congress, the SP's Delhi unit president, Usha Yadav, said, "It depends on the higher authorities. After the polls, we will see who we will support."

On the new entrant into politics, the Aam Admi Party (AAP), Yadav questioned their strategy of creating a corruption-free government. "They have just entered the political arena. Do they have a magic wand that they promise to make a corruption-free government. You (media) have done sting operations (on AAP), which shows that with how much honesty they work towards removing corruption,” she said, while addressing a press conference to release the SP's manifesto.

DUTA members protesting against interviews ‘roughed up’
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 23
Even as the 'illegal' interviews for the post of Aurobindo College's vice-principal was called off following protests by Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) and meeting with the Delhi University authorities today, DU authorities have not agreed to the reinstatement of the former regular vice-principal Dr Meenakshi Gupta who was removed from the post recently.

As interview by the five-member truncated Governing Body (GB) of Aurobindo College (morning) was slated for today, DUTA members gathered outside the gate of the college but were apparently not allowed inside with police guarding the entry. When many of them tried to enter forcefully, they were allegedly manhandled by the police and two were whisked away to the police station and detained for over three hours.

"This is the second time that the principal and the college tried to hold illegal interviews and this time the principal had posted police outside the gate with instructions to bar anyone from entering. Teachers, including females, were heckled and detained even as we were peacefully protesting. We condemn the police action," said DUTA president Nandita Narayan.

The current principal Dr Hari Om retires in December and the vice-principal is supposed to take over as the officiating principal thereafter. DUTA maintains that the former vice-principal was removed by the then GB chairman Rohilla.

It is significant that that six members of the erstwhile GB had given a requisition to the then chairman asking for an emergent meeting of the GB to discuss how the vice-principal had been removed from office without approval of the GB, but the chairman Rohilla did not honour the requisition, DUTA members said.
