Simply Susan
Academy award winning actress and activist Susan Sarandon says that war is America's biggest export and cinema comes a second close
Nonika Singh

An Academy award winning actress, a global face, goodwill ambassador of UNICEF, voice of dissent…. Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon is not this or that but all of it. A beauty with brains, she exudes charm in person and reveals a wit that is as endearing as sharp and intelligent and a spirit that refuses to be cowed down.

Bollywood dreams

Without any qualms she accepts that she knows little about Indian cinema or cinema of the rest of the world for that matter and that's why festivals such as IFFI are so important. Given a chance would she care to act in a Bollywood film and she answers, "Guess I would have to learn dancing for that."

No wonder, post 9/11when few had the courage to speak out their mind she chose to for, "I find it much more difficult if you don't ask questions. To do nothing is to be complicit." Of course, if she had the power she would stop all wars. But in the given scenario she feels, "War is America's biggest export and cinema might come second close." Actually the actress whose sterling performances have embellished over 100 films like Step Mom, Thelma and Louise, Little Women, The Apprentice et al senses no contradiction between being an activist and an actor. Says she, "At the heart of all performances is empathy for the others. And once you have that it's not difficult to relate to concerns."

But on whether cinema can help people reframe perspectives she does feel that first cinema has to entertain. So, for her, the much acclaimed film Dead Man Walking is essentially a love story that touches upon the serious issue of death penalty. However, she is not sure whether cinema alone can address the issue of gender discrimination, a cause that she is closely associated with in India. "You just can't blame men alone for machoism. It has a lot to do with what values mothers give to their sons." Even in the US she observes that it's difficult for little girls to live out their dreams, revel in their beauty and intelligence and only a very confident man dares to choose a strong woman as her partner.

Indeed, like Bollywood, Hollywood too isn't fair to ageing actresses. She quips, "All one has to do to lose one's job is to grow old and fat." But she, willing to play her age, is unlikely to. Besides, teaming up with her daughter ready to write parts for her and two sons, one a musician and the other a director she laughs, "We might just start a family cottage industry."

But of course the commercial industry like orientation of Hollywood does bother her. So does the whole business of academy awards which she asserts has almost become like running for a presidential race in which one has to devote time and money. Yet she who has won five Oscar nominations and one Oscar does confess, "It's a big moment for everyone." Indeed, it may not be always given to the best actor. But she is glad to have won it and the coveted trophy occupies a pride of place in her bathroom with other awards.

Surviving in the business of cinema she shares is not easy. But for one who never studied acting and just fell into it, "It's a great way to earn money and have fun." Her life anyway has been a twin blessing as it has entailed being an "activist as a person and an actor as a job." And a happy mother above all.

Age’s just a number

67, the number doesn't quite fit Susan Saradon. So what is the secret behind her young looks? She says, "Well, there is a makeup artist behind this miracle." Seriously, she attributes it to her genes, her mother's bone structure, her healthy habits and being a happy person who enjoys boxing. She also puts to rest doubts about who designed her resplendent outfit at the IFFI's inaugural ceremony. No it wasn't Wendell Rodricks but a Chinese designer Han Feng. Ideally she would have loved to wear a saree but then on hindsight she jokes, " I might have tripped and broken my neck".

An open book
You know him as the tough nut of MTV Roadies. But now know the vulnerable side of Raghu as he talks about himself in his book Rearview: My Roadies Journey
Jasmine Singh

There is an inevitable question that lurks around him, is he real or is he not! Raghu Ram of the MTV Roadies fame has never sat down to dissect or make sense of the question. He leaves it on the person who meets him to make his own assessment. And if you still haven't had a chance to get a whiff of this bad-good-bad-unpredictable-heartless-heartfelt, personality analyst, then you can dig into his book Rearview: My Roadies Journey by Rupa Publications for a clear understanding of the man.

Later, if you want to check the genuineness of the written words, you can always catch up with him at the MTV Hero Honda Roadies auditions in Chandigarh on Friday to get a clearer picture. Just be careful, this man is capable of pulling off a trick just when you thought he has mellowed down!

Accompanied by Rannvijay, the man who would try all the daring tasks on the show himself before giving it to the contestants, who can turn a frown into a warm smile, Raghu, Rannvijay shout out for the contestants to come for MTV Hero Honda Roadies X1 ride for respect.

Show me the show

If you had some personal issues with the vote out, this time you can hold your tongue and mind. Says Rannvijay, "It is a new format this time, no vote out. People would say it is the politics that lead to vote out, so this time there is no politics either. You have to fight hard to earn your respect." Sounds easy, but hang on till you hear it from Raghu. "There is no vote out, but there is much more to it." Much more, he repeats, "Wait and watch. After 10 successful years, Roadies X1 hits the television with a new flavour. You wouldn't get to face the format fatigue. Seven boys and seven girls fight it out for the title, which is purely based on performance.

The years gone by

Raghu has received or let's say earned more favourable and unfavourable adjectives in the 10 years of the Roadies journey. He has compiled the entire experience in his book Rearview. If he says, it is disturbed childhood that made him behave in a certain way on Roadies, brush it off, he is kidding. It is much more. "There are times when I have to behave in a certain way to get some reaction from the contestants. Nothing is deliberate, what happens is natural," adds the man who never forgets to credit his team and their hard work for the success of MTV Roadies, and also creativity. Raghu can definitely be the unpredictable fellow for everyone who follows and doesn't follow Roadies, but he has allowed everyone to decode him through his book, a collective experience in his book. "It has just about everything from the scratch, the idea behind the show, the problem and support of sponsors, the incidents, the reasons for raising his baritone in the interview rounds," he shares. The book can be ordered online from December, and this will give you a peek inside the man himself.

Even when Rannvijay, who quickly runs his eyes through the book, adds in a lighter vein, "Raghu has opened himself up in the book. Now, he is in a vulnerable position than the contestants." Raghu smiles on, you will never know what cooks inside that interesting mind.

Horse whisperer

Creator Siddharth Kumar Tewary's new epic Mahabharat is witnessing a fresh set of actors. Young actor Nirbhay Wadhwa, who is playing Dushasan, is one of them. Nirbhay who has become comfortable with the horses now, explains how it was for him initially.

He says, "Few weeks back there were few stunts with the horses and I decided to do that on my own. While I was riding my horse all of a sudden I lost my balance and was about to fall. But somehow managed to hold on. There were many other horses coming from the back and it could have been risky. My knees were bruised and I went to the doctor and got an X-ray done. But everything was alright by the grace
of God."

STAR TRACK
Baddie & Bullet Raja

Gulshan Grover Actor Gulshan Grover, who has more than 400 films to his credit, will now be seen in Saif Ali Khan starrer Bullett Raja where he plays the main villain. He talks about his character and more…

Conflict maker

I am the main villain of Bullett Raja. I am the creator of the conflict, the person responsible in changing the course of the life of Bullett Raja, the person who gives Raja some real tough times and some taste of picking up a fight with a powerful adversary, Bajaj.

Different role

I am very happy that I am playing the villain in a film directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. If you see my career, you will observe that my earlier roles have been extremely dramatic. Dramatic in looks, dramatic in presentation and in everything else. But in this film it is the villain is re-invented. He is powerful and strong. But at the same time he is not dramatic in the way he looks or behaves. So it's a different kind of role.

Less opportunities

In this generation, opportunities are not enough. Earlier, I used to have about 30 films a year. Every week I used to have a release and in every film I used to be the baddie. So those many films where a young actor can play a baddie are not made today.

Not easy

It's not easy to be a baddie and be a star like how I have been. Now take for instance this film. There are other actors who are also playing negative roles in this movie but after this movie they will go back to doing what they normally do in other movies. Also to be a baddie you need tremendous amount of courage, talent and focus.

Vidyut Jamwal in desi 300

Vidyut Jamwal has received a lot of eye balls for his stunning action in Force. Commando, his first as a leading man, made an impact for its action sequences and the former model, whose name today is synonymous with daredevil acts, is now preparing for what he hopes will be a turning point in his career.

The actor's group, the Vidyut Jamwal Stunt Company, will be named in the stunts credit of Bullett Raja.

He has also signed an action film and the buzz is that the project is on the lines of the Hollywood hit 300.

The actor is prepping up for the flick to be directed by Ram Madhvani. The filmmaker has directed several award-winning commercials and his first feature, Let's Talk premiered at the Locarno Film Festival.

"The concept is brilliant and Ram is one of the best action directors. The film will be unlike anything you have seen before, with a lot of the Indian martial art form, Kalaripayattu, which I have trained in since I was 10," said Vidyut.

The action hero claims that he choreographed all the stunts in his previous two outings but did not get credit for it. But in Bullett Raja, where he makes a special appearance, Vidyut and his group will be mentioned in the credits.

"Tigmanshu (director Tigmanshu Dhulia) told me to choreograph my action scenes and has credited them to me. My company has 15 boys from the slums of Dharavi and Kerala," Vidyut adds.

One of the stunts in Bullett Raja sees Vidyut sliding under a bed in a chase scene and has already caught the fancy of the audience.

"People have been asking me how to do it. You need to be really flexible to pull it off," said the actor.

Dhanush in Big league

Southern star Dhanush, who made his Bollywood debut opposite Sonam Kapoor in Raanjhanaa earlier this year, has signed another Hindi film. He will be next seen in R Balki's forthcoming untitled film, co-starring Amitabh Bachchan.

Confirming the news, Dhanush tweeted: "Yes guys, my next Hindi film is with Balki sir. Very excited and eagerly looking forward to it :) thanks for all your wishes"

While Ilaiyaraaja will be composing the music and P C Sreeram will be the cinematography for the film. "Privileged to share screen space with Big B himself. Ecstatic 2 be part of Raja Sir's musical again. Finally, a chance to work with P.C sir !" he added.

Dhanush, who was last seen in Tamil film Maryan, has signed a bilingual film with director Aanand Rai which will go on floors by next year.

Censor trouble for Singh Saab

This isn't the first film with a Sardar hero to get into trouble. Sikh organisations raised a hue and cry over Akshay Kumar's, Ranbir Kapoor's and Saif Ali Khan's length of the beard or the way the turban was tied in Singh Is King, Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year and Love Aaj Kal.

Now, it's Sunny Deol's turn to face the fury of intolerance. A source reveals that some members of censor board have objected to a sequence in the new Sunny Deol starrer Singh Saab The Great where Sunny takes his turban off and uses it to save a child's life.

Apparently a heated argument ensued when the censor board asked for that scene to be deleted as they opined, it was likely to hurt religious sentiments.

The source says, "When some panel members objected to the scene, the director Anil Sharma fought back heatedly arguing that every religion preaches the protection of children and women from danger. In fact, a woman panelist from the censor board even pointed out that women are known to take off their sarees to save lives." However, the censor board refused to let the scene go.

It’s official

Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif launched the Dhoom 3 official merchandise and technology products at YRF Studios earlier this week. This included a broad array of licensed merchandise from a number of leading manufacturers. It comprised a wide assortment of products ranging from smart phones and tablets to motorcycle accessories that feature unique designs inspired by the movie.

Finally a film for Kamaal?

Buzz is that controversial actor Kamaal R Khan who appeared in a film, Deshdroji, will play a baddie in Mohit Suri's upcoming film Villain. The film stars Sidharth Malhotra, Ritesh Deshmukh and Shraddha Kapoor as the main negative character.

Sachin upset with Ranbir, Priyanka

Sachin Tendulkar is allegedly upset with Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. The two actors quizzed him about his plans post retirement at Neeta Ambani's birthday party a few days back. To which Sachin reportedly replied, "Let me retire first."

All eyes on her

Actress Priyanka Chopra is looking sizzling in a video that has gone viral. The video shows Priyanka walking with an attitude and bringing the busy traffic of New York to a screeching halt. The shoot was done for a magazine.

Double take
With Double Di Trouble, Bollywood actress Poonam Dhillon makes her debut in Punjabi films
Jasmine Singh

It is not common to see an all-women team from a film opening their heart. The beautiful actress Poonam Dhillon and dimpled beauty Kulraj Randhawa sit down for a chit-chat at Monica's Kitchen & Kafe at Elante Mall spinning the talks of their new film Double Di Trouble produced by Subash Ghai.

It gets better with time

The Bollywood actress Poonam Dhillon makes her debut in Pollywood with Double Di Trouble. The actress waited for the right kind of role, but did it come across really? She understands where we are arriving at. "I always wanted to do a film in my mother tongue, Punjabi and I didn't want to do just any kind of role. I understand that all Punjabi films are man-centric, Double Di Trouble, however, is being made under a good banner and it stars Dharam ji as well, so I said yes to it."

Poonam Dhillon has been reading scripts that are women-centric. "Nothing has taken off, I am still exploring though," she says without any tall declarations on her future projects. Having worked in the professional set ups of Bollywood, we wonder how was the experience working in the not-so-organised Punjabi film industry. "This set-up was made in a total professional set up. I didn't feel even for a minute that it is a Punjabi film," adds she.

Pretty picture

She is back in the scene, Kulraj Randhawa finds herself in a huge project and she is definitely excited about it. “It is a big banner, a huge star cast and it has been shot lavishly. I working with Dharmendra for the second time, it is a bonding time again.”

Spirited talk

Glenfiddich now has a proper distribution and marketing network in place and aim to grab a bigger chunk of Indian market that is largely ruled by whiskey, rum, brandy, constituting 95 per cent of the market share. "We have got more than 33 per cent of single malt business in India which is huge for a family owned company," says Ian, who is all set to push for more!

Jasmine Singh

She can be absolutely quiet and absolute fun in the same time frame. Today, Harshita Gaur, the lead of Channel V's new show Sadda Haq is all about talking, sharing her experiences, her joy, after all this is her first show and is already being talked about.

"I am super excited about Sadda Haq, a story of a girl who loves machines and takes up mechanical engineering. It is a story that throws a question what is that girls can't achieve," says Harshita.

Apart from her role in Sadda Haq what the girl feels more close to is the fact that she can totally relate to the situation. "I am a newcomer in the industry; I don't have any godfather, like my character. Nevertheless, I plan to make it big one day; I will work and carve a place for myself in this industry."

Sadda Haq starts on Channel V on November 25. For Harshita this is her moment, she wants to hang on to it. "I don't have huge plans, some short term goals; right now the goal is to do my best in Sadda Haq."

Delicacies from the deep sea
Seafood Extravaganza on at JW Marriott brings an array of clam, oyster, scallop, mussel, lobster and mud crab dishes
Manpriya Singh

There are some who have always liked a whiff of the deep sea on their platter. While the sea might be miles away but its food makes for a suitable substitute. JW Marriott rolls out Seafood Extravaganza, a seafood festival comprising signature recipes. Chef Antonello Cancedda personally takes over things. "We'll be cooking according to the preferences of our guests. I'll be showing them the raw materials, explaining things and then take their requests as to whether they want it grilled or otherwise."

It all started with the visit to a place where seafood is primarily street food. "I had been to Thailand lately on a holiday and there you find it all on display. That's what propelled to give a taste of the seafood to the city."

Moving on, picture the sea-food delicacies such as clams, oyster, scallops, mussels, lobster, mud crabs in Mediterranean-Italian way especially to bring forth the sea republic of Genoa.

The recipes range from clam oreganata, sgroppino, spaghetti alle vongole, fish soup to lobster armoricana. There are as many as four options in the starters, two in soups, three in pastas and six for the main course, along with the appropriate wine pairing.

What the chef recommends is grigliata di pesce, which is grilled seafood and fish. "In this platter you end up trying a little bit of everything. All the raw materials are nicely marinated and then grilled." Then there's tortelloni di gamberi, which is stuffed pasta with tiger prawns. As for the wine, he shares, "Soave Classico goes really well with fish. White wine is a good pairing with sea food in general. It could be sparkling like champagne too."

On till November 30th at Oregano, JW Marriott-35, Chandigarh.

Close to life
After the string of comedy films, comes a Punjabi film, Leather Life, which captures the riot-torn Punjab post 1984
Jasmine Singh

Let’s get serious, let’s give the funny bone some rest, let’s talk about something real. This is precisely the message that the Punjabi cinema is now sending out.

So, now every second Punjabi film will either be based on the riots in Punjab or something closer to it. The new one to hit the scene is Leather Life. Yes, quite an unusual name for a Punjabi film, but the subject is something familiar, the story of 1984.

The cast and crew of Leather Life meet up in Chandigarh to talk about this project, something that everyone in the crew feels close to.

Directed by Sukhbir Singh, chief assistant director in Putt Jattan De, written by Kanwaljit Singh, Leather Life stars Aman Dhaliwal and Himanshi Khurana of Sadda Haq fame in the lead roles.

Going down the memory lane, and recreating it on a silver screen is not something that can happen just like that. Agrees Aman who was last seen in Putt Jattan De, “Leather Life is a film that talks about life after ‘84 and how the youth of Punjab had to face brutalities. The subject is real, and many of us would be able to relate to it,” he says.

Wouldn’t it be wrong to add that ‘84 is the new fixation with Punjabi cinema now, especially after Anurag Singh of Jatt & Juliet fame announced his project 1984? Aman thinks, and comes up with the best he can. “The audiences also need a change. As far as ‘84 as the ‘hot’ topic is concerned, the fact that everyone can relate to it is what makes it a subject of interest.”

The name Leather Life comes from the fact that human beings were reduced to animals’ post 84. Prince Kanwaljit Singh, writer of the film, however, adds that the film has been kept light; it won’t take audiences to depression. It has a mix of romance and action and a dose of reality. We have kept the real as real; I have only constructed things that I have seen.”
