Provide basic amenities to Dhanas residents, HC to UT
Chandigarh, November 21 Disposing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by colony residents, the High Court directed the Administration to ensure that the basic amenities and other facilities required to breed cattle were provided. The petitioners had earlier challenged the UT Administration’s decision to allow the colony’s use for residential purposes on payment of Rs 1,000 per square yard. The petitioners had contended the area was allotted exclusively for breeding cattle and could not be converted into residential premises. |

Company fined Rs 1 lakh for breaching MoU
Chandigarh, November 21 A Sector 36 resident, Vinod Kumar Sharma, alleged that he entered into a MoU with the respondent for construction of a plot in Sector 36 and a sum of approximately Rs 72 lakh was paid to the opposite party, as the total cost against the bills raised. According to the complainant, as per agreement the respondent was to look after the discrepancies or construction faults towards minor defects for two years and major defects for a period of five years, but it failed to rectify the cracks developing on boundary wall, water seepage on walls, broken and defective door and window handles, bent doors and windows. The court observed that the flooring and driveway could be repaired by dismantling and re-laying few selected patches. The respondent alleged that the driveway was not part of the MoU signed. Consumer court fines firm for delaying possession of flat Omaxe Limited has been penalised for delaying possession of flat to a customer. The company has been directed to provide compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the resident of Sector 49. The complainant, Sandeep Luthra, alleged that he booked a residential flat in a Group Housing Project under the name and style Omaxe Parkwoods, Baddi – II, to be developed and constructed on a piece of land situated at Baddi, in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh. The complainant alleged that till date the legal possession of the said plot has not been delivered to him, despite his repeated requests. After hearing to both the parties, the court directed Omaxe Limited to deliver the possession of the plot in Group Housing Scheme under the name of Omaxe Parkwoods, Baddi-II situated at Baddi to the complainant, to pay interest at the rate of nine per cent per annum on the payments made by the complainant from August 24, 2010 till the handing over of the possession of the plot to the complainant and to pay compensation to the tune of Rs 1 lakh to the complainant for causing physical as well as mental harassment |

Obtain call details of former mayor, court to SIT
Chandigarh, November 21 The Punjab and Haryana High Court had observed that the probe, carried out by the Punjab police, into the murder case was biased towards the former mayor, Jaspal Singh. The orders came after the counsel for the petitioner informed the bench about another mobile phone which was being used by the former mayor. The counsel alleged that SIT had not obtained the call details yet.As the matter came up for hearing, state counsel Anupinder Singh Grewal said the SIT was conducting the probe in a fair manner, and had not given a clean chit to anyone in the case so far. Parampreet Kaur was found dead on February 23. The matter was brought to the High Court’s notice after a petition was filed by the father of the victim. — TNS |

Rape accused acquitted
Mohali, November 21 The accused has been identified as Vijay Kumar. He was accused of raping a married woman. Vijay had been lodged in the jail since then as his bail application was not granted. According to information, the alleged rape incident had taken place on October 17, 2010. A case was then registered at on April 18, 2011. |

6 thefts reported
Chandigarh, November 21 LS Roop Rai of Sector 44 reported that someone stole four tyres of his Verna car from outside his house. Vikramjit Singh Kalsi reported that someone stole his mobile phone, near the UIET, Sector 25. Ranjit Singh, a resident of Patiala, reported that someone had stolen motorcycle PB65-N-2913, from GMSH-16 on November 18. Kavisha Dube of Sector 19, reported that someone stole his Alto car DL5CH-6163, from near her house on November 20. The police have registered separate cases of thefts under Section 379 of the IPC. |

45-year-old commits suicide
Mohali, November 21 Kumar was found dead by his family members. According to the police, he shot himself in the temple with his licensed revolver. The victim was reportedly under depression from a very long time. A case has been registered at the Sohana police station. The police are conducting investigations under Section 174 of the CrPc. No suicide note was recovered from the spot. |

Couple booked for duping relatives
Mohali, November 21 A case of cheating has been registered against Mandip Kaur and her husband Avtar Singh, both residents of Mahadian village, Fatehgarh Sahib, at Sohana Police Station on the complaint of Gurnam Singh, a resident of Raipur village. Gurnam Singh is Mandip’s brother-in-law. Gurnam Singh alleged that he and his wife were left behind in Georgia, USA, on tourist visa, by the accused. They had to stay for a month there before finally returning to their city. “Mandip and Avtar both had assured me that they will make my family settled in Canada in just 90 days with the help of a Chandigarh-based travel agent, in exchange of Rs 30 lakh,” said Gurnam. “They had taken a total amount of Rs 26 lakh so far. I had paid the amount in four installments. They got visa of Georgia for both of us and took us there with a promise that they would take us to Canada from there. But we were left there on our own,” alleged Gurnam Singh. Avtar Singh and his wife has not returned the money that we gave to them and neither did he fulfil the promise of sending us abroad, said Gurnam Singh. Refuting the charges, Avtar Singh stated to police that he had purchased 43-acre land in Georgia, following which Gurnam too asked him to get him a piece of land there. “He asked me if i could help him with buying a land in Georgia as well. I just helped him by making him meet the agent who helped me,” said Avtar. “He (Gurnam) had given three cheques to a Chandigarh-based agent, through whom I had purchased the land in Georgia, to purchase 12- acre land there,” claimed Avtar Singh. Further investigations are on to ascertain the truth. “We have already begun with the investigations, We will find out the truth at the earliest,” said a police official. |

12 injured as bus overturns
Chandigarh, November 21 The bus was hit by a speeding Tavera car at the rear resulting which the driver lost balance and the bus toppled over. The Himachal Roadways bus was coming from Delhi and was going towards Inter-State Bus Terminus, Sector 43, when the mishap occurred. There were 25 passengers in the bus. The Travera car was coming from Mohali side and was going towards the IT Park. Police reached the spot and rushed all the victims to the hospital. The four seriously injured were identified as taxi driver Rajwant, a Sangrur resident, and passengers Gopal, Hansraj and Shiwani. Their condition is said to be critical and they are admitted in the Government Medical College and Hospital Sector 32. The Tavera was occupied by three girls, who were BPO employees. Rest of the passengers of the bus escaped with minor injuries and was discharged after first aid. The police said they have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the driver of the Travera car who was found at fault resulting in the mishap. |

Pool-B has BKSP, Bangladesh, Police DAV Public School, Amritsar, Guru Nanak Public School 36, Chandigarh, and Vivek High School, Chandigarh. In Shanta H Singh Memorial Basketball Tournament held for girls, Pool-A has teams, including Guru Nanak Public School, Chandigarh, The New Public School, Chandigarh, Vivek High School, Chandigarh and Chakwal National School, Kurali. Pool-B has Sacred Heart Sr Sec School, Chandigarh, St Kabir School, Chandigarh, and GGMSSS, Sec-20, Chandigarh.The matches for both the boys and girls will start tomorrow. In Rao Jai Singh Memorial Basketball tournament, St John’s School will play against Kimberley International in the inaugural match. BKSP will play against Vivek High School in the second match. Annual sports festival kicks off
Chandigarh, November 21 College principal, Dr JS Raghu, welcomed the chief guest, Rajpal Singh, an Arjuna Award winner, and former captain of the India National Hockey Team. The guest of honour, Pradyuman Singh Chohan, was the best athlete of the college in 1960. Rajpal said a sport is such an activity which paves the path and gives crucial lessons for life and obedience is the key determinant to success. In 5,000 mt, Sombir bagged the first spot. In high jump, Khem Singh was the first spot. In 1,500 mt Sombir Grewal was the winner. In shot put, Sourav Rana was the winner. |
SGGS-26 pugilists steal the show
Chandigarh, November 21 GGDSD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh, DAV College, Chandigarh, and AS College, Khanna, secured second, third and fourth positions with 20, 10.5 and 6.5 points, respectively. On the other hand, Guru Nanak Girls College, Ludhiana, won the Panjab University Inter- College Wrestling (women) Championship for the session 2013-14 with 19 points. Dev Samaj College for Women, Ferozepur, BSH Khalsa College for Women, Abohar, and GN College for Girls, Muktsar, secured second, third and fourth positions with 18.5, 11.5 and 8 points, respectively. In the individual category, results for men section, Anand Singh from GGDS SD College, Chandigarh, bagged the gold in 46 to 49 kg weight category. Football club formed
Chandigarh, November 21 In order to promote football in and around Chandigarh, it was decided to form a football club, named after S Surinder Singh Bajwa, a renowned journalist. Sports kits were also distributed to the players of the club which are going to participate in All-India FSC Football Tournament being played at Ponta Sahib (Himachal Pradesh). The team will play its first match on 22-11-2013. |
Fencing trials from today
Chandigarh, November 21 The trials for selection of the Chandigarh senior fencing team for boys will take place on November 23. The players in proper kit and with their weapons will only be allowed to take part in the trials. The selected players will attend a 20-day coaching camp. |
Eastern Air Command ground Air HQ
Chandigarh, November 21 The second match was played between the Western Air Command (WAC) and Maintenance Command (MC) in which Western Air Command (WAC) team won the match 5-1. There will be two matches tomorrow on the fourth day of the Championship. First match Training Command (TC), vs Central Air Command (CAC) will start at 8 am. Second match Southern Western Air Command (SWAC) Vs Southern Air Command (SAC), will start at 10 am. A total of 8 command teams from all over the Air Force are participating in the championship scheduled. Top two teams from each pool will qualify for semifinal. Final match will be played on November 26. |
