VAT evasion: 36 cars sold on fake invoices
Chandigarh, November 17 Details of around 300 cars sold through the dealers in 2011, 2012 and 2013 are being scrutinised by the department. Since the Chandigarh Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA) does not have any mechanism to establish the authenticity of the sale invoice numbers, the vehicle were registered. In some of the cases, the car dealer has used the sale invoice number and details of the purchaser to generate a bogus sale invoice for another vehicle. Commissioner, Excise and Taxation, Mohammed Shayin, said after asking for the penalty from the defaulting dealer, the issue of bogus invoice number for registration of vehicles would be taken up. It has been seen in some cases that same invoice number was used to sell four different cars, thus evading the VAT at a rate of 12.5 per cent. As per the rule, even if the dealer goes in appeal against the tax demand he has deposit 25 per cent of the tax amount. During a door-to-door survey of the car owners, the department was surprised to find out that the purchaser of the car was not aware about the bogus sale invoice papers and different vehicles being registered against the same persons and same invoice number. Sources reveal that after a similar fraud was detected in Punjab, the transport department verifies the sale invoice numbers. |
