Govt Medical College leaving no stone unturned
Patiala, November 16 The authorities had been demanding an increase in number of MD seats from 120 to 189 and of MBBS seats from 150 to 250. This demand was long awaiting a nod from the MCI. In 2012, as many as 3,595 MBBS seats were allotted to different institutions across the country. But Punjab was not given a single seat despite holding several meetings in this regard. The plight has been the same since past 35 years. In fact, the MCI had further imposed a ban on the admission in Chintpurni Medical College, Pathankot, which further decreased the total number of medical seats in the state by 150, thereby worsening the situation. Considering the demand for an increase in the number of medical seats, Government Medical College had appealed to the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, in this regard. Following the request, a 20-member team of BFUHS inspected the college. The team took stock of the infrastructure development plans that would be required in case the college was permitted to increase the seats and after studying the entire plan, they gave their consent. Moreover, the college authorities received a no objection certificate from the Punjab government regarding the increase, following which the authorities submitted an application with the MCI along with the detailed proposal mentioning all structural changes, staff and space arrangements required for the advancement. The draft even included details of land that had been earmarked for the construction of various labs, library, wards and operation theatres, as per the requirements of the MCI. Now, that the proposal lies with the MCI, the college authorities are busy fulfilling all the requirements, including filling of vacant posts, as the MCI can anytime conduct an inspection to take a final call on the issue. The Punjab government has recently increased the posts of senior residents and other faculty members as well, including specialists, as the hospital has only five specialists. Giving information in this regard, college principal Dr KD Singh said, “We will be able to admit more students from next session itself once we get a go ahead from the MCI.” |

Jaipuria Sunrise told to compensate complainant
Chandigarh, November 16 The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed the opposite parties to pay Rs 1 lakh to the complainant. The opposite parties were also directed to pay the penalty at the rate of Rs 5 per square feet of the super area per month for the period of delay till the delivery of possession of the flat to the complainant. The complainant booked a residential flat in Jaipuria's Sunrise Greens at VIP Road, Zirakpur. However, due to the delay in possession, the complainants had to take an accommodation on rent and ended up paying a sum of Rs 9,000 per month. On the contention of the opposite parties that the case did not fall in the jurisdiction of the commission, the commission ruled: "The submission also requires to be rejected because under the Act, for summary or speedy trial, exhaustive procedure in conformity with the principles of natural justice is provided. Therefore, merely because it is mentioned that the commission or the forum is required to have summary trial would hardly be a ground for directing the consumer to approach the Civil Court." Ansal Lotus fined
Rs 1 lakh The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has penalised Ansal Lotus Melange Projects for failing to start a housing project. The commission has directed the opposite party to pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation to the complainant for mental agony and harassment. The complainants alleged that they booked a flat in Orchard County, the project of the opposite party in Sector 115, Kharar-Landran Road, Mohali. However, 'serious lapses and breach of terms and conditions of the allotment letter' were found. It was stated that the site plan shown to the complainants, at the time of booking, was changed completely, by reducing the green area in front of certain towers. It was also stated that the opposite party was raising a 17- storeyed building on the east side of the complainant's flat, which would hinder the scenic view of the hills and also block the direct sunlight. "The opposite party has failed to produce any cogent and convincing evidence to controvert the contention of the complainants that many common facilities were incomplete and construction activity was not livable," ruled the commission. |
