Deworming day observed: Since many students had to be admitted after consuming iron tablets empty stomach in some of the schools here early this year, the Health Deptartment today ensured presence of at least one staff member, while covering 25 schools on the deworming day on Friday. Dr LC Thakral, Senior Medical Officer, inaugurated the drive at Government Senior Secondary School for Girls. 

Hoshiarpur
Hoshiarpur resident booked for fraud: The Hariana police in the district has booked a local resident for allegedly duping a man of Rs 5 lakh on the pretext of sending the victim’s son abroad. In his complaint, Sohan Lal of Ghugial village alleged that Kamal Kant, a resident of Suthehri Road, took the amount from him on January 6 two years ago. But neither his son was sent abroad nor the amount was returned, said Sohan. The accused has been booked under IPC section 420. 

3 drug peddlers land in police net: The police has arrested three drug peddlers in separate cases after recovering drugs from their possession. In the first case, Gaurav of Denowal Khurd village was caught with 110 gm of narcotics powder in Garhshankar. Vikas Kalia of Hardokhanpur village was held with 54 banned capsules in Model Town while the Sadar police arrested Niraj Kumar of Hardokhanpur village with 900 narcotic tablets and 27 injections. Cases under the NDPS Act have been slapped on the accused.

Two youths rape 13-yr-old girl, held: The police on Friday arrested two youths, Ravi Kumar and Ram Kumar, on the charge of raping a 13-year-old girl. Station House Officer Harinder Singh said the accused allegedly waylaid the victim while she was returning home from Sohian on Wednesday. The victim was forcibly taken to an abandoned building and raped, he said. The police said the victim was subsequently dropped at her aunt’s house in Barnala.

CHANDIGARH

Man held with charas: The police has arrested a person with 105 gm of charas. The accused, identified as Neeraj, a resident of Burail village, was nabbed from outside his house on November 14. A case under Section 20 of the NDPS Act has been registered.

Chahal to head biodiversity board: The state government has constituted a biodiversity board headed by AS Chahal. An official spokesman said here that the Additional Chief Secretary, Forests and Wildlife Department, and the Principal Secretaries of the Departments of Environment, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Dairying were the ex-officio members of the board. Kuldeep Singh Anand, Narender Singh Yadav and Parvez Ahmad were non-official members of the board.The term of the Chairman and members of the board would be three years.

Liquor vend set on fire in Jhajjar: Miscreants allegedly set a liquor vend on fire in Bhambheva village under Beri police station here on Thursday night. The miscreants fled the spot after commiting the crime. Old enmity is believed to be the reason behind the arson. Over 10 persons have been booked on the complaint of the vend owner. The police said the accused came to the vend around 10 pm and had an altercation with salesman Jaiveer of Bahrana village here over an old dispute. The accused then called some other people there and set ablaze the vend. The vend owner said liquor stock of thousands of rupees was damaged in the fire.

Bolero taken away at gunpoint: Two armed miscreants reportedly took away at gunpoint a Bolero jeep from Rinku of Makrana Dadri village on the Beri-Kabulpur village on Wednesday. The miscreants sped away after committing the crime. The police has registered a case against two on the complaint of the jeep owner. 

Body found: The police has found the body of a middle-aged man in fields located on the Badli road here on Friday. The body, which is yet to be identified, has been kept in the mortuary of the civil hospital. “We have sent pictures of the body to nearby police stations/ posts for recognition,” said the police.

Two killed:Rajesh Kumar of Jamalpur was killed on the spot when his motorcycle was hit by a tractor and a motorcycle near Guda village bus stand under Babain police station, 25 km from here, on Thursday. In another case, Satbir of Pindarsi was killed on the spot when his car was hit by a truck near Pindarsi village under Thanesar Sadar police station on Thursday. 

SONEPAT
Run for fun: The Sports and Youth Welfare Department organised a run-for-fun here on Thursday. Hundreds of students from various schools participated in it. They carried banners and placards on peace and amity. The District Child Welfare Council organised the prize distribution function at Panchayat Bhawan here. The winning students were given prizes by the Additional Deputy Commissioner. 

HIMACHAL PRADESH

Palampur
Man killed: Tension prevails at Dagoh village, 20 km from here, following the murder of a 69-year-old man, Mehtab Singh. Mehtab was allegedly murdered by his nephew Kuldip Singh on Thursday. Police sources said there was a dispute over the boundary wall of the house between Mehtab and Kuldip. Mehtab resumed the construction of a boundary wall, which led to a clash between the two families. The police said Kuldip, along with other family members, allegedly attacked Mehtab with rods and a sharp-edged weapon. Mehtab died on the spot.
