attack on nayagaon police station Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, November 13 The notice by Justice KC Puri to the State for December 16 came on a petition filed by NRI Amit Saini and five other accused. In their petition, they alleged that a false and fabricated criminal case was registered against them by the Nayagaon police officials. According to the sequence of events as narrated in the petition, petitioner Sandeep Sandhu went to the police station on January 9 in the afternoon for inquiring on the status of his complaint against one Balkaar Sohi, who had fired at him. As he was recording conversation with the police officials, they put him in the lockup and registered an FIR against him. Saini, residing in Australia, had come to solemnise his marriage at Chandigarh. He went to the Nayagaon police station around 6.30 pm and found friend Sandeep Sandhu’s car outside the police station. He came to know from the policemen that Sandhu was arrested. As Sandhu had been arrested in a false case and tortured in the lockup, Saini protested. His appeals to the policemen to allow medical aid to Sandhu did not evoke any positive response. Saini then contacted senior police officials and journalists. Counsel for the petitioners told the court that Saini was present in the court with a laptop, and a pen drive containing complete unedited video film of the entire sequence of events that took place outside the police station, which falsified the police version of the attack on the police officials and the police station. |

Shortage of young players in city police
Chandigarh, November 13 Even, in last police games, the Chandigarh Police team failed to clear the first stage of the competition. In past, the football team of the same department was pointed to be the best team in the northern region. The present team has many senior players, who have many a times represented the state in senior Santosh Trophy Championship. “We are not participating in the All-India Police Football Championship. With no new players in our kitty and senior players hanging their boots, we have decided to pull back our entry form the tournament,” said a senior player of Chandigarh Police football team. Also the condition of other team games is turning bad to worst. Notably, due to no new recruitment under sports quota made the players, already recruited with the Chandigarh police, to suffer more. Earlier, the Police Department was scheduled to recruit sportspersons after June 2011 but no development has been made to improve the standards of team games including hockey, footballand volleyball. “We are having a good bunch of players but short of young blood. All the team games need recruitment of new players. We were not even entertained under the recently held Institutional Football League and now no participation in the police games has made us to wait for another year. The new recruitment will make our superiors to start taking interest in football also,” said soccer player deployed on PCR duty. A senior official, seeking anonymity, said, “Our players do participate in various competitions. The department is suffering shortage of young sportspersons but hopefully the upcoming general recruitment may make some way for these sportspersons also,” said he. It is worth mentioning that the recruitment of sportsperson in Chandigarh Police will also help the local talent to make their future. On an average, two or three players of different games represent the nation each year but due to unavailability of seats players always prefer to cadre in other states. “I need to check the procedure to admit sportspersons under sports quota. The sportspersons will be recruited, if the exercise falls under rule. We are yet to make plans on this,” said RP
