Girl raped; 1 held: A teenaged girl of Kang village, 15 km from here, was allegedly kidnapped and raped by two boys of the same village. The victim, stated to be in a serious condition, was referred to Guru Nanak Hospital, Amritsar, from the local Civil Hospital on Monday night. Station House Officer Sawinder Singh said one of the accused had been arrested.

Differently abled killed in accident: Bawa Singh (65), a differently abled man of Chhapri Sahib village, 25 km from here, was killed in a road accident near his village. Bawa Singh was reportedly trying to board a bus when he fell unconscious and fell from the bus. He received head injuries and died on the spot.

Government bans transfers, postings: The Punjab Government has announced a ban on transfers and postings of its employees in various departments, an official spokesman said. He said routine transfers would now be done in August, though mid-term transfers/postings in special cases could be done with the permission of the Chief Minister. Written instructions regarding this have been sent to the heads of all the departments, divisional commissioners and sub-divisional magistrates (civil), and chairmen and managing directors of all the corporations and boards," he said.

Muharram holiday on Nov 15: The Himachal Pradesh government has declared November 15 as a gazetted holiday on account of Muharram instead of November 14. An official spokesperson said here today that this would be a holiday within the meaning of Section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881.

Painting contest by SJVN: Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) organised a state-level painting competition in collaboration with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the National Energy Conservation Campaign here today to create awareness. Governor Urmila Singh presided over the prize distribution function at the Raj Bhawan here today. She also gave away cash prizes of Rs 10,000, Rs 8,000 and Rs 5,000 and 20 consolation prizes of Rs 1,000 each to the winners.
