745 cartons of English liquor seized in Ambala
Ambala, November 6 After seeing the police, the driver of the tanker panicked and fled form there. The police have impounded the vehicle. It could not be learnt from where the liquor was being brought and who is owner of the vehicle and the seized material. However, the police has registered a case and has started investigating the matter. It is to be mentioned that on the direction of the Commissioner of Police, Ambala Rajbir Deswal, a campaign has been launched in the district against the smack and liquor smugglers. Moreover, during the past two months, smack worth lakhs of rupees has been recovered in Ambala. |

19 colonisers fail to apply for regularisation
Ropar, November 6 Ropar Deputy Commissioner, PK Agrawal, said as many as 192 unauthorised colonies were identified in the district. Out of these, 116 colonies are in Ropar sub-division. At Chamkaur Sahib and Anandpur Sahib sub-divisions, there were 52 and 11 such colonies, respectively. Thirteen colonies were in Nangal sub-division, he said. In fact a total of 2334 from colonisers and individuals were received in the district, he added. Colonisers and residents of unauthorised colonies were still allowed to apply for the regularisaton of their properties up to November 15 with a late fee. The builders in such cases, however, will have to pay a surcharge of 25 per cent while owners of plot and building will have to pay 10 per cent surcharge against late fee with their applications. |

Govt-aided schoolteachers’ union hits out at parties
Fatehgarh Sahib, November 6 Upjit Brar, president of the Government-Aided Progressive Front, Malkiat Singh, president and Anju Kaura, general secretary of the Government-Aided School Bachao Front said that still the aided-school teachers, belonging to 476 aided-schools, were getting medical allowances and house rent as per fourth pay commission. The government had failed to implement fifth pay commission recommendations and to give benefits to its employees, whereas the neighbor states have implemented it completely and given 18 per cent DA to its employees. They asked as why Punjab has lagged behind and asked If there was no resources crunch, while increasing their own salary. They also asked if the economic condition of the state was not good then why the political parties have increased their own salaries. They urged all the employees union to join hands like political parties to get their rights. |

Cong MLA addresses meetings in villages
Ambala, November 6 This was revealed by a local MLA and former Union Minister, Venod Sharma, while addressing the Congress meetings at Liharsa, Kalu Majra, GhelKalan, Ghelkhurd, Devinagar, Dadiana, Manakpur, Lohgarh, Dangdheri and Mokha Majra villages today. Sharma said the Congress is a national party which has its representation all over India and has the oldest history. He said many freedom fighters sacrificed their lives while fighting under the flag of the Congress party to free the country from the shackles of foreign rule and many suffered atrocities while remaining in the jail. He said only the Congress had one cadre and all the workers of the party were dedicated and responsible to the party and the country. He further said those parties who had tried to misguide the people during elections by giving attractive promises had been tested by the people earlier and they would not be successful this time. He added that during the past nine years a sum of Rs 1,250 crore had been incurred on the development of the Ambala Vidhan Sabha constituency. |

Advocate duped of Rs 4 lakh
Chandigarh, November 6 Prithi Singh Chauhan, the advocate reported to the police that he received a call from someone who informed him that his USA-based cousin who had died recently had made him the nominee of his FD’s worth 4 lakh USD. The advocate corresponded through phone and emails to the person who identified himself as David Corsan and told him he is the manager of a USA-based bank. Prithi Singh also sent some documents and received phone calls and emails from the person. To claim the amount, he was asked to deposit an amount as processing fees. The advocate deposited an amount of Rs 28,000 and then Rs 3.7 lakh in the State Bank of Patiala Branch of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He deposited the money in the bank account of a woman identified as Anamika Massish, a resident of Jamia Nagar in New Delhi. However, after he submitted the money, there was no response and he realised that he had been duped. The case was first referred to the cyber cell of the police for investigation from where it was sent back to the Sector 3 police station. A case under Section 420 of the IPC has been registered and police raids are on to identify the woman behind the fraud. |

3 children take poisonous substance, hospitalised
Panchkula, November 6 The victims, namely, Daksh, Hari Om, and Vasu, all residents of Haripur village in Barwala, were playing together when they drank some poisonous substance. The children were immediately rushed to General Hospital at Sector 6 from where Daksh was referred to the PGI later. All the children are said to be out of danger now. |

Ranji tie: Rain may play spoilsport today

According to the Metrological Department’s prediction, there are high possibilities of rain or thundershower and the temperature will dip as soon as the day will start. “As per our knowledge, there is high possibility of thundershowers on Thursday and the day will start with a dip in temperature,” said Surinder Pal, Director, MET Department. In their second match, the Punjab team is schedule to face Mumbai team. Both the teams have become the centre of attraction with international players like Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Wasim Jaffer, Harbhajan Singh and many others from IPL (Indian Premier League) brand. “I hope the rain gods will show some mercy tomorrow. I am really looking forward to take my 6-year old son to show some of his favourite stars live in action. The cricket stadium is easily approachable for local cricket lovers, so it is good that the stadium is hosting some match,” said Vikrant Kapur, a local resident. “The team of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is one of the leading teams of the nation. The team has not only won Ranji title many a times but has also produced many international players. We are definitely looking forward to see the match,” said a group of budding players, from coaching centre of Sector 16. On other hand, unlike other days, the authorities of Sector 16 cricket stadium are well-equipped to cover the grounds from the heavy thundershowers. The authorities besides getting a rain-cover from the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) have opened a new pair of covers today morning. Earlier, due to inadequate staff and non availability of covers, many matches have been cancelled at the stadium. “Besides getting help from the PCA, we have made our own arrangements to deal with heavy showers. In addition to that, we have also sought up manpower from other coaching centres. With these facilities, we can make sure that the general public can enjoy the match as soon the expected rain showers comes to halt. We do not want the spectators to go disappointed. The rain covers have already been laid to the ground and the pitch,” said Naib Singh, manager of the cricket stadium of Sector 16. |
Yuvi’s entry bolsters Punjab’s hopes
Chandigarh, November 6 This is the first time that Yuvraj and Harbhajan, former trainees at the Sector 16 stadium, will be playing a match for the Ranji trophy here. Both the teams will face each other in their second respective match at the cricket stadium of Sector 16. Today, the Punjab team was joined by skipper Harbhajan Singh and city lad Yuvraj Singh. The skipper spent more time in nets and practicing for catches, while Yuvraj opted to attended half-an-hour net sessions. “We are confident of gelling in well as a team. The stadium is holding attention of local people who make a beeline to catch a glimpse of these players. “We shifted our base here after learning about these cricketers’s presence in the city. Karanveer made 19 runs off 23 balls, while Aayush scored 18 runs off 28 balls. Karanveer and Aayush remained the main scorer for the team. For bowling side, Chiranpreet and Yogesh Naithani hogged the limelight, both the players claimed three wickets each in the match played today. Chasing the target, Steeping Stone School defeated the Chandigarh Baptist and managed to score 101 runs. Yogesh Naithani played a match winning knock of 60 runs in 35 balls.
