Illegal hoardings dot city

17-year-old girl dies in road accident

A 17-year-old died in a road accident on Tajpur Road here today. The deceased has been identified as Khushboo, a resident of Tibba Road.

Equipment of a mobile tower located near the octroi post on Rahon Road here was reduced to ashes when a fire broke out in its batteries this evening. 

Expectant woman dies; family blames neighbours
Ludhiana, October 28
A 20-year-old expectant woman died under mysterious circumstances at a private hospital here late last evening. The deceased has been identified as Reeta, a resident of Chowhan Nagar on Dhandra Road. 

Fourteen more dengue cases confirmed
Ludhiana, October 28
Fourteen patients tested positive for dengue today at city hospitals. Of them, nine are from the district. They belong to Gunj, Giaspura, Shiv Puri, BRS Nagar, Dhandari, Sherpur, Saheed Karnail Singh Nagar and Sherpur.

Traders resist anti-encroachment drives
Ludhiana, October 28
Encroachments by shopkeepers in the Sadar Bazar area in Ludhiana have reduced the width of the road considerably. The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has failed to tackle the traffic chaos in markets during the ongoing festival season. The MC tehbazaari wing is facing tough resistance from shopkeepers, who team up against civic body officials whenever they go to clear encroachments from any area.

Miscreants strike at ATM, decamp with Rs 7.5 lakh
Ludhiana, October 28
Miscreants struck at an ATM of the Oriental Bank of Commerce at Cheema Chowk on Saturday and decamped with Rs 7.5 lakh. The matter came to light this morning. The thieves did not break the ATM and instead used some technique to open the locks.

Lawyers have withdrawn their strike after the state government assured them it will resolve the controversy arisen over the appointment of SDMs in place of judicial officers under the Punjab Rent Act. The legal fraternity had started a statewide agitation against the new Punjab Rent Act a few days ago.

The ex-servicemen today paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the 1947-48 Kashmir conflict when invaders had killed 11,000-odd residents of Baramulla in a bid to capture the newly carved out state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Factory canteens exempted from service tax
Ludhiana, October 28
The canteen at one of the factories in Ludhiana. Canteens set up in the industrial units covered under the Factories Act, 1948, have been exempted from service tax by the department. Serving of food or beverages by a canteen maintained in a factory and having the facility of air-conditioning or central heating at any time during the year have been exempted from service tax.

Official again fails to record statement
Ludhiana, October 28
Foreign students Emilia and Andrada are doing internship at a company in Ludhiana. Superintendent of the tehbazaari wing of the Municipal Corporation Rajiv Bharadwaj could not record his statement in front of MC committee today for the want of quorum. Of the three members of the committee, only one member was present in the office as the other two had to go to Amritsar in connection with a meeting.

Thieves steal 3 LPG cylinders from school
Jagraon, October 28
Thieves struck at Government Primary School, Sudhar, late last night and stole 3 LPG cylinders, a gas stove and some bags of grain. The incident came to light in the morning.

Woman’s bag snatched
Ludhiana, October 28
Two motorcycle-borne youths snatched a bag from a woman in the model town area today. The incident took place in the busy market when the woman, along with her friend, was going on a rickshaw. Suddenly, two bike-borne youths came from behind and snatched her bag.

2 held with 21 kg of poppy husk
Jagraon, Octobe 28
The Ludhiana (rural) police has arrested two persons and seized 21 kg of poppy husk from them in separate operations in the last 24 hours. While the first suspect was arrested near Pamali village, the other was arrested from Khadur village, near Jodha.
