Arhtiyas’ body announces indefinite strike

Fatehgarh Sahib, October 19
Farmers, who have been sitting in the grain market to sell their paddy for the past many days, and the labourers had to face great difficulty as the commission agents of Bassi Pathana boycotted the procurement of paddy process and announced to observe indefinite strike against the pick and choose and dictatorial attitude of the officials of all the government procurement agencies. The commission agents accompanied by the farmers and labourers staged a dharna in the grain market and raised slogans against the government. They announced that strike will continue till the procurement agencies procure every grain of paddy. Addressing the mediapersons, Rajesh Singla, press secretary of the Arthia Association Punjab said that government had failed to ensure smooth procurement of paddy.

Moreover, the payments of the procured paddy are not made on time and the lifting process of procured paddy is very slow. He said that procurement started in the mandi on October 5 and Markfed has not made a single payment causing great inconvenience among farmers and agents. — OC

Two vehicle thieves held
Police recovers 2 cars, 6 two-wheelers from various parts of tricity

Chandigarh, October 19
The city police has arrested two youths who used to steal motorcycles and cars for taking joyrides and then abandoned the vehicles after emptying the fuel tanks. Two cars and six two-wheelers have also been recovered from the accused.

The police arrested the accused, identified as Darshan and Sanjay, alias Ganji, both residents of Mouli Complex at a check point near Kala Gram. A motorcycle stolen from Kalka was recovered from them.

Station house officer, Mani Majra police station, Charanjit Singh said in the past few months there had been a sudden increase in the cases of vehicle theft, following which a special drive was launched to arrest the accused.

During the investigation, both the accused confessed of committing vehicle thefts across the tricity.

“On the basis of information given by the accused, two cars, five motorcycles and one Activa scooter were recovered from different parts of the tricity. The accused, both between the ages of 18 and 20, used to steal vehicles using a master key for taking a joyride and abandoned the vehicle after the fuel got over,” the SHO said.

The police said the youths were addicted to alcohol and smoking, and were involved in similar crimes earlier too. The duo is on police remand till October 21.

“More recoveries are expected to be made on the basis of the interrogation,” the SHO said.

Man held for not returning borrowed SUV

The Chandigarh police has arrested KK Malhohtra, the complainant in the infamous DSP Raka Gira case, for allegedly refusing to return an Innova borrowed from a taxi operator.

Parminder Singh, a resident of Takipur village in Mohali district, complained to the police that on May 27, he had gone to meet his friend Sewa Singh in Sector 41, where he met KK Malhotra. The complainant alleged that Malhotra borrowed his vehicle for a week on the pretext of travelling out of town.

Parminder Singh stated that when after one week, he went to Malhotra’s village to get the vehicle, he started making excuses and did not return the Innova.

The police after taking legal opinion has registered a case against Malhotra at the Sector 39 police station.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had arrested DSP Raka Gira in 2011 on the charges of demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 1 lakh from KK Malhotra. Malhotra had complained to the CBI, following which a trap was laid.

Woman, brother-in-law arrested for assault

The Mohali police today arrested a woman and her brother-in-law for assaulting the manager of the Phase VI branch of the Oriental Bank of Commerce.

The accused, Sunita, alias Rumi Devi, and her brother-in-law Lakesh Kumar, both residents of Balongi village, have been arrested on the complaint made by the bank manager, Sanjay Sharma, a Sector 50 resident.

Inspector Dharam Pal, station house officer of the Phase I police station, said the accused allegedly assaulted the manager in a fit of rage, when he asked Sunita to produce her proof of identity. The accused had gone to the bank to get the documents of her house, after having repaid a loan.

Sunita’s deceased husband, Karanbir Singh, had taken a loan of Rs 8 lakh from the bank after mortgaging their house a few years back. After his death, Sunita had been repaying the loan.

The manager was repeatedly asking Sunita to produce her proof of identity, as her name had been mentioned as Rumi Devi in the documents, said the inspector Dharam Pal.

The SHO said a case under appropriate sections of the IPC had been registered against Sunita and Lakesh.

27-year-old youth kidnapped, beaten up in Mohali

Mohali, October 19
A 27-year-old person was forcibly taken away in a car by some unknown persons, who also beat him up first at his rented accommodation at Phase IV, here tonight. The incident occurred around 10 pm, said the police.

The victim, Gurpreet Singh, who originally hails from Bhattian Bet village in Ludhiana district and currently residing at Phase IV, was abandoned at Sohana village later due to a police check post. Gurpreet Singh is an agent of Max Insurance company.

Giving details, DSP Rajinder Singh Sohal said about four persons, armed with rods, sticks and sluggers, came in Accent car at Gurpreet Singh's residence and started thrashing him up. "After beating him up, they bundled him in the car and sped away," said DSP Sohal.

On getting information, we flashed the message and after which they abandoned him near Sohana village, added DSP Sohal. The number of the car could not be noted down. A case in this connection was yet to be registered at the time of filing of the report. — TNS

Woman booked on charge of impersonation in exam

The police has booked a Yamunanagar resident on the charge of impersonating. The accused, Sangeeta, was taking Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) exam for someone else at a private school in Sector 16, when she was nabbed on June 26.

A case has been registered at the Sector 14 police station on the complaint of a board official, Mohan Lal.

“We received a letter from the board official about registering of case. It stated that the accused herself did not take the exam and made another woman take it in her place,” said station house officer of the Sector 14 police station, inspector Dalip Kumar. He further added, “We are yet to investigate the case.”

In a city like Chandigarh, c of cricket stands for chaos. Organising international events has never been an easy process here. Traffic went haywire on the third ODI between India and Australia.

Roads leading to the PCA stadium witnessed vehicles stuck in in traffic jams.

It was 11 am and spectators made a beeline for the stadium. It was a full house by evening, with India opting to bat first.

“Reaching the stadium on time turned out to be a wise step. Gates 5, 6, 14 and 9 are the chaotic areas," said Pritosh Kumar. During the Champions Trophy, the stadium witnessed a low turnout.

“The ODIs are crowd-pullers. After watching India's show at Jaipur, the third ODI was a must watch," said Ankita Misra.

Ticketing system
Tickets were made available at the Mohali branch of the Central Bank of India in Sector 70 on Saturday morning. Manager of the bank said the tickets were sold for Rs 400 and Rs 1,000. The tickets for the chair block were sold out by 12 pm while those for the AC lounge, boxes and VIP block were being sold till 5 pm.

Security

Spectators were asked to give missed calls at 8283009523 or 9041101221 before entering the stadium. Citing security reasons, the Punjab Police personnel said the move aimed at registering the phone numbers of the spectators. They were even seen taking pictures of the vehicles parked in the parking lot of the Phase X market.

Cheering up disappointed fans
The non-availability of tickets left many disappointed. Cheering them up, clubs and pubs in the city installed LED screens on their premises. Packed to capacity, the places gave the spectators a spectacular view. A manager of a hotel said a number of fans showed up. Those, who failed to get the tickets, enjoyed the match at discotheques in Sector 26.

Dhoni’s helicopter swings
India were 76 for 4, then 154 for 6. But they had MS Dhoni, and they ended on 303 for 9. Dhoni pulled out helicopter swings, hitting 12 boundaries and five sixes.

No check on prices of eatables
As always, there was no check on food stalls. A slice of pizza was being sold for Rs 150 while a glass of 400ml soft drink cost Rs 50. Wafers having an MRP of Rs 15 were sold for Rs 20. Packed lunch was priced at Rs 80.

Shopkeepers cash in on opportunity
As spectators were not allowed to carry cameras and bags inside the stadium, they asked shopkeepers of the Phase IX market to look after their belongings. Getting a chance to make a quick buck, the shopkeepers charged the fans Rs 30 per bag.

Too sweet to handle
The police personnel were seen collecting chocolates, coins, pens and earphones at various gates. "They are performing their duty but they should ensure that these things are returned to the spectators later on," said Surinder Kapoor, a resident of Patiala.

Absence of Shabad Singh felt
Known as Chhota Bheem, Shabad Singh did not turn up at the stadium. The boy accompanying Preity Zinta during the IPL matches was nowhere to be seen.

Entry without ticket
The Punjab Police personnel were seen helping their acquaintances enter the stadium. It was learnt that they did not have the tickets.

All eyes were on Yuvraj as he was on strike. His dismissal on the first ball came in as a disappointment. He fell to Mitchell Johnson. Cricket buffs were hoping fireworks from the local lad. His 35-ball 77 knock in T20 against Australia on October 10 had heralded his comeback. Jalandhar-based Ajay Singh Mann, who was accompanied by his three friends, Rajinder Singh, Deepak and Sukpreet Singh, said they had not expected a poor show from Yuvi. Panchkula resident Tamanna and her friend Divya said, "We wanted to see him hit sixes and boundaries.

"Yuvi has failed to perform well on his home turf," said Amit.

Seeking blessings

Indian cricketers Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina and Ishant Sharma paid obeisance at Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan in Sohana village. They spent half-an-hour there and partook of langar.

Riding high on glory
Kangaroos stole the show. JP Faulkner and AC Voges took the team home. Faulkner hit 30 runs off Ishant's 48th over. He scored 64 off just 29 balls with two boundaries and six towering sixes. Middle order batsman Voges contributed 76 off 88 balls with seven boundaries. Australians lead 2-1 in the seven-match series. As soon as Faulkner hit the winning six, disheartened spectators started leaving the stadium. This led to chaos. In the absence of police personnel, situation worsened.

Tickets sold on black market

Black-marketeers made most of the third ODI today. A number of people were seen selling tickets on the black market at Phase IX near the PCA stadium.

When the correspondents posed as customers and enquired about the rates, at least 10 persons came to them, offering tickets for different stands.

Tickets for the students' block were priced at Rs 500 against its actual price of Rs 100 while the tickets for the chair block were being sold at exorbitant rates.

Two youngsters, who were later rounded up by the police, claimed that they could provide the tickets for any stand.

ASI Joginder Singh from Patiala, who rounded up two black-marketeers after a long chase, said the duo had thrown the tickets while running away.

Two more persons were rounded up by the police.

"As there was no complaint, the youths were issued a warning and let off," said SHO Kulbir Singh.

He said they had rounded up four persons for selling the tickets on the black market, but did not register any case.
