Six held with contraband
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 16 The accused have been identified as Parminder Singh, alias Manna, a resident of Jassran village, Sukhdeep Singh, alias Sukha, a resident of Sahnewal, and Ajit Pal Singh, alias Prince, a resident of Bhadal Thua. Senior Superintendent of Police Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said, “These three accused were the main suppliers of intoxicants in the rural area and the police had been chasing them for a long time now. Acting on a tip-off, three different police parties were deployed in the region from where they were caught red-handed with 30,000 intoxicant tablets and 100 gram of narcotic powder.” The SSP said the accused have confessed of committing the crime. Other alleged peddlers identified as Kanwaljeet Singh, a resident of Bassi Pathana, and Malkiat Singh, a resident of Gubardhanpur, were also arrested by the local police and recovered 17 kg of poppy husk from their possession. In another incident, 50-gram smack was seized from a resident of Bassi Pathana, identified as Sanjeev Kumar. The police has arrested him and investigations were on. The SSP said, all the accused have been booked under the NDPS Act. |

Array of events witnessed on Day 2
Patiala, October 16 On the second day of the fest, various competitions such as plays, mimicry, playing classical instruments, debate, elocution, collage making, cartooning, poster making and photography were held. Dr Satish Kumar Verma, director, Youth Welfare Department of the university, had inaugurated the festival yesterday. College chairman Satish Goyal, managing director Rakesh Goyal and director Jagjit Singh welcomed the guests and the participants. On day 1 events such as Gidha, quiz, clay modelling, rangoli making were held. An on the spot painting competition was also organised on the occasion. Government College for Girls lifted the Gidha trophy, while Punjabi university stood second. Khalsa College and Modi College were bracketed third. |

In-laws booked for woman’s murder
Banur, October 16 The Police has registered a case against in-laws for murdering the woman after the father of the victim lodged a report at the police station accusing the husband of the deceased, Deepak Khanna, his father Parmanand Khanna, his mother Raj Rani, sisters Vandna and Kiran Ahuja, and brother Balkishan Ahuja, as responsible for the death of his daughter. According to information, the victim was allegedly shot dead by her husband and the body was thrown at a hilly area in Himachal Pradesh. The body of the deceased has not been found yet and the accused are also absconding. Station House Officer Bikramjeet Singh said a police party has gone to Shimla to search for the dead body. A case has been registered under Sections 302, 201 and 120-B of the IPC against all the accused. |

Employees’ body to go on indefinite strike
Dera Bassi, October 16 President of Employees Union, Jasmer Rana and leader of Employees Union, AITUC, Venod Chug said the company workers formed a union at the Lalru plant some days back, but the company management wants to break the union and so they are transferring them at the Gurgaon plant unnecessarily. “Workers have written a letter to Labour Commissioner, Punjab, for the registration of the union but due to the pressure put by company officials, no union certificate has been issued yet,” alleged a worker. Union leaders have demanded that transfer of workers should be cancelled and genuine demands should be accepted. |

Lok adalat to settle bank cases on November 23
Mohali, October 16 A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the District Legal Services Authority, which was presided over by Jagroop Singh Mahal, Chairman, Permanent Lok Adalat, Mohali. Regional representatives of banks whose cases were pending in various courts were among those present. Mahal asked the bank officials to bring as many cases as possible to the permanent lok adalat for settlement. He said at the lok adalat cases were settled much faster and time and money were saved. Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority Tarn Taran Singh Bindra asked the officials to draw up a list of the ongoing cases in the Mohali courts. The bank officials gave an assurance that they would try to present the maximum number of cases at the November 23 lok adalat. |

Ludhiana jail superintendent gets notice
Mohali, October 16 The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Manjot Kaur issued notice to the jail superintendent as two accused, Dharminder and Jaswinder, who have been lodged in a Ludhiana jail, were not sent to today’s court hearing. The court directed the jail superintendent to give his explanation in this connection. It also issued production warrants of the duo and issued directions to appear in the next hearing on October 23 by all means. The other accused - Rajat, Kevin Sushant, Sunbir, Onkar Singh, Sunil Bhanot, Vishal Shekhawat and Deepak Kaushal - were present in the court. The accused had shot down local advocate Amarpreet Singh in an indiscriminate firing on February 27 at Phase 3B1, here. Amarpreet’s cousin Gaganjot Singh and his friend had also sustained injuries after receiving shots in the firing following which the police had registered a case under Sections 302, 307, 427, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54, 59 of the Arms Act against the accused at the Mataur police station. |

Zirakpur, October 16 The teenager has been identified as Sawan Kumar, a resident of the Barmajra Colony, Mohali. According to information, Sawan had come to Zirakpur in search of work. He was involved in catering work from quite some time, said his father, Satpal Verma. A case has been registered under Section 365 of the IPC. |

Scuffle costs man his life
Chandigarh, October 16 An eyewitness told the police that late evening both youths were having a serious argument on some issue and tried to manhandle each other near the railway track in Vikas Nagar. When Mashin was pushed by the accused on the track, a rail engine that was passing through the track crushed his body. Railway police station SHO Tirath Ram said a case had been registered against the unidentified accused and efforts were on to arrest him. Sources said as the eyewitness had denied to reveal any other details, the police was facing problem in apprehending the culprit. The sources said Mashin had a criminal record and was involved in theft and snatching cases. |

NRAI selector appointed jury member
Chandigarh, October 16 Dhillon was also recently appointed as the General Manager of Lake Sports Complex, by the UT Administration. Inspector-General of Police Dhillon (retd) will be the only Indian jury member, among the 12-member jury panel for the tournament starting from October 19 at Tehran, Iran. The event will host events of pistol and rifle categories in men, women, junior and senior groups. It is for the first time that the 6th Asian championship will witness all the events of pistol and rifle categories. Earlier, the championship was organised only in the Air gun category. “Last year, I was appointed as a judge in the 5th Asian Air gun Championship held at Nanchang, China,” said Dhillon. “As a judge, our panel would supervise the entire proceedings of the tournament. The members will also take charge of any objections, total marks, dress code, trigger weight and other aspects of the competition,” said Dhillon, also a recipient of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award. “As many as 66 shooters will represent the nation in all the categories of the competition. And as per the recent performances, I am hopeful that the shooters will bag good amount of medals. Samaresh Jung, Sanjeev Rajput, Digvijay Kumar, Anjali Bagwat, are some names that are expected to lead our nation’s medal tally,” said Dhillon. SAI plans coaching centre at Zirakpur
Chandigarh, October 16 “We are ready with a lay out of the complex. Now, the government will be taken in confidence so that we can start with the project. All we need is to get some land and build over the international standard complex,” said the director general of SAI, Jiji Thomson. The director general said the complex would be an internationally-acclaimed sports complex with all ultra modern facility. “Punjab has contributed a lot but at present the area needs to be uplifted with coaching, equipment and exposure. Keeping in mind the future of the state and players, we have come up with this project,” said Jiji Thomson. Much concern on extension centres “The local authorities are looking after the extension centres,” said Thomson. The regional director said if there are some complaints at the local level, the matter will be looked into. Directorate of Sports, PU, has administrative problems When asked about the recent non-participation of football and hockey teams (boys and girls) in an inter-college tournament, the officials put the blame on the administrative tribulations in Directorate of Sports, Panjab University. “I was conveyed that there is some problem in administrative part of the Directorate of Sports, Panjab University,” said Sanjeev Sharma, regional director coaching. Rajni remained the other main scorer for the team. Punjab defeated host Chandigarh, 38-24, in the second semi-final. Pawandeep scripted the team’s win with scoring 10 goals.
